This study analyzes the impact of geometric variations induced by the manufacturing process on the aerodynamic efficiency of an airfoil used in the design of a 3 kW wind turbine blade. For this purpose, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was implemented, and the results were compared with those obtained using QBlade software. After blade fabrication, experimental evaluation was performed using the laser triangulation technique, enabling the reconstruction of the deformed airfoils and their comparison with the original geometry. Additional CFD simulations were carried out on the manufactured airfoil to quantify the loss of aerodynamic efficiency due to geometrical deformations. The results show that the geometric deviations significantly affect the aerodynamic coefficients, generating a decrease in the lift coefficient and an increase in the drag coefficient, which negatively impacts the airfoil aerodynamic efficiency. A 14.9% reduction in the rotor power coefficient was observed with the deformed airfoils compared to the original design. This study emphasizes the importance of quality control in wind turbine blade manufacturing processes and its impact on turbine power performance. In addition, the findings can contribute to the development of design compensation strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of geometric imperfections on the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines. The advancement of computational capabilities has allowed for more efficient airfoil analysis and design. Consequently, it has become possible to expand the design space and explore new geometries and configurations. However, the current state of development does not yet support a fully automated optimization process. Instead, the newly introduced capabilities have effectively transferred the previously trial-and-error-based approach used in geometry design to the formulation of the optimization problem. The goal of this work is to study the formulation of an optimization problem and propose a new methodology that better portrays the aircraft’s requirements for airfoil performance. The new objective function, added to an existing tool, estimates the main performance parameters of an aircraft for the Air Cargo Challenge (ACC) 2022 competition using a method that extrapolates the characteristics of the airfoil into the aircraft’s performance. In addition, the traditional relative aerodynamic property improvements, in this work, are coupled with the performance results to smooth the polar curve of the resulting airfoil. The optimization algorithm is based on the free-gradient technique Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), using the B-spline parametrization and a coupled viscous/inviscid interaction method as the flow solver. This paper addresses the challenge of maximizing power extraction in offshore wind energy systems through the development of an enhanced maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control strategy. Offshore wind energy is inherently intermittent, leading to discrepancies between power generation and electricity demand. To address this issue, we propose three advanced control algorithms to perform a comparative analysis: sliding mode control (SMC), the Integral Backstepping-Based Real-Twisting Algorithm (IBRTA), and Feed-Back Linearization (FBL). These algorithms are designed to handle the nonlinear dynamics and aerodynamic uncertainties associated with offshore wind turbines. Given the practical limitations in acquiring accurate nonlinear terms and aerodynamic forces, our approach focuses on ensuring the adaptability and robustness of the control algorithms under varying operational conditions. The proposed strategies are rigorously evaluated through MATLAB/Simulink 2024 A simulations across multiple wind speed scenarios. Our comparative analysis demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed methods in optimizing power extraction under diverse conditions, contributing to the advancement of MPPT techniques for offshore wind energy systems. This paper aims to analyze the performance of a tilt-rotor fixed-wing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) using a segmented approach, focusing on a nominal mission for SAR (Search and Rescue) applications. The study employs optimization techniques tailored to each segment to meet power consumption requirements, and the results highlight the accuracy of the physical characterization, which incorporates nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic models derived from wind tunnel test campaigns. Critical segments for this nominal mission, such as the vertical take off or the transition from vertical to horizontal flight regimes, are addressed to fully understand the performance response of the aircraft. The proposed framework integrates experimental models into trajectory optimization procedures for each segment, enabling a realistic and modular analysis of energy use and aerodynamic performance. This approach provides valuable insights for both flight control design and future sizing iterations of convertible UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles). Full article

This study examines the performance of two diffuser configurations—a trumpet-shaped and a semi-diagonal design—for application in micro gas turbine engines, aiming to assess their suitability in terms of efficiency and operational flexibility. Both diffusers were initially evaluated using steady-state CFD simulations with the k-omega SST turbulence model, followed by experimental testing on an actual engine across the start-up sequence from idle to 70% of nominal speed. Performance was mapped over four constant-speed lines for each configuration. Results showed that the trumpet-shaped diffuser offered a greater choke margin but suffered from increased aerodynamic losses, whereas the semi-diagonal diffuser demonstrated higher efficiency but required closer alignment with the target operating point. The k-omega SST model showed strong predictive accuracy, with 5.13% agreement across all instrumented parameters for all investigated speed lines. These findings suggest that while the trumpet diffuser provides better stability, the semi-diagonal design is more efficient when properly targeted. Future work will focus on extending the analysis to higher speed ranges and transient regimes using harmonic balance CFD methods and enhanced data acquisition techniques. Full article

To enhance the survivability of armed helicopters in high-threat environments, integrated infrared (IR) suppressors are increasingly adopted to reduce thermal signatures. However, such integration significantly alters the exhaust flow field, which may in turn affect both the infrared and acoustic characteristics of the helicopter. This study investigates the aerodynamic, infrared, and acoustic impacts of an integrated IR suppressor through the comparative analysis of two helicopter configurations: a conventional design and a design equipped with an integrated IR suppressor. Full-scale models are used to analyze flow field and IR radiation characteristics, while scaled models are employed for aeroacoustic simulations. The results show that although the integrated IR suppressor increases flow resistance and reduces entrainment performance within the exhaust mixing duct, it significantly improves the thermal dissipation efficiency of the exhaust plume. The infrared radiation analysis reveals that the integrated suppressor effectively reduces radiation intensity in both the 3~5 μm and 8~14 μm bands, especially under cruise conditions where the exhaust is more efficiently cooled by ambient airflow. Equivalent radiation temperatures calculated along principal axes confirm lower IR signatures for the integrated configuration. Preliminary acoustic analyses suggest that the slit-type nozzle and integrated suppressor layout may also offer potential benefits in jet noise reduction. Overall, the integrated IR suppressor provides a clear advantage in lowering the infrared observability of armed helicopters, with acceptable aerodynamic and acoustic trade-offs. These findings offer valuable guidance for the future development of low-observable helicopter platforms. Full article

Creating a comfortable microclimate in the premises of buildings is currently becoming one of the priorities in the field of architecture, construction and engineering systems. The increased attention from the scientific community to this topic is due not only to the desire to ensure healthy and favorable conditions for human life but also to the need for the rational use of energy resources. This area is becoming particularly relevant in the context of global challenges related to climate change, rising energy costs and increased environmental requirements. Practice shows that any technical solutions to ensure comfortable temperature, humidity and air exchange in rooms should be closely linked to the concept of energy efficiency. This allows one not only to reduce operating costs but also to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to sustainable development and environmental safety. In this connection, this study presents a parametric assessment of the influence of climatic and geometric factors on the aerodynamic characteristics of the air cavity, which affect the heat exchange process in the ventilated layer of curtain wall systems. The assessment was carried out using a combined analytical calculation method that provides averaged thermophysical parameters, such as mean air velocity (Vs), average internal surface temperature (tin.sav), and convective heat transfer coefficient (αs) within the air cavity. This study resulted in empirical average values, demonstrating that the air velocity within the cavity significantly depends on atmospheric pressure and façade height difference. For instance, a 10-fold increase in façade height leads to a 4.4-fold increase in air velocity. Furthermore, a three-fold variation in local resistance coefficients results in up to a two-fold change in airflow velocity. The cavity thickness, depending on atmospheric pressure, was also found to affect airflow velocity by up to 25%. Similar patterns were observed under ambient temperatures of +20 °C, +30 °C, and +40 °C. The analysis confirmed that airflow velocity is directly affected by cavity height, while the impact of solar radiation is negligible. However, based on the outcomes of the analytical model, it was concluded that the method does not adequately account for the effects of solar radiation and vertical temperature gradients on airflow within ventilated façades. This highlights the need for further full-scale experimental investigations under hot climate conditions in South Kazakhstan. The findings are expected to be applicable internationally to regions with comparable climatic characteristics. Ultimately, a correct understanding of thermophysical processes in such structures will support the advancement of trends such as Lightweight Design, Functionally Graded Design, and Value Engineering in the development of curtain wall systems, through the optimized selection of façade configurations, accounting for temperature loads under specific climatic and design conditions. Background: As a well-known environmental hazard, ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5, aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 µm) has been positively correlated with an increased risk of digestive system diseases, including appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal cancer. Additionally, PM2.5 exposure has been shown to alter microbiota composition and diversity in human and animal models. However, its impact on goblet cells and gut mucus barrier integrity remains unclear. Methods: To address this, 8-week-old male and female interleukin-10 knockout (IL10−/−) mice, serving as a spontaneous colitis model, were exposed to concentrated ambient PM2.5 or filtered air (FA) in a whole-body exposure system for 17 weeks. Colon tissues from the PM2.5-exposed mice and LS174T goblet cells were analyzed using H&E staining, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and transcriptomic profiling. Results: The average PM2.5 concentration in the exposure chamber was 100.20 ± 13.79 µg/m3. PM2.5 exposure in the IL10−/− mice led to pronounced colon shortening, increased inflammatory infiltration, ragged villi brush borders, dense goblet cells with sparse enterocytes, and lipid droplet accumulation in mitochondria. Similar ultrastructure changes were exhibited in the LS174T goblet cells after PM2.5 exposure. Transcriptomic analysis revealed a predominantly upregulated gene expression spectrum, indicating an overall enhancement rather than suppression of metabolic activity after PM2.5 exposure. Integrated enrichment analyses, including GO, KEGG, and GSEA, showed enrichment in pathways related to oxidative stress, xenobiotic (exogenous compound) metabolism, and energy metabolism. METAFlux, a metabolic activity analysis, further substantiated that PM2.5 exposure induces a shift in cellular energy metabolism preference and disrupts redox homeostasis. Conclusions: The findings of exacerbated gut barrier impairment and goblet cell dysfunction following PM2.5 exposure provide new evidence of environmental factors contributing to colitis, highlighting new perspectives on its role in the pathogenesis of colitis. Advanced air defense methods are essential to address the growing complexity of aerial threats. The increasing number of targets necessitates better defensive coordination, and a promising strategy involves the use of interceptors together to protect a specific area. This task fundamentally depends on accurately predicting their kinematic envelopes, or reachable sets. This paper presents a novel approach to determine the boundaries of reachable sets for aerodynamic interceptors, accounting for energy loss from drag, energy gain from thrust, variable acceleration limits, and autopilot dynamics. The devised numerical method approximates reachable sets for nonlinear problems using a constrained model predictive programming concept. Results demonstrate that explicitly accounting for input constraints, such as acceleration limits, significantly impacts the shape and area of the reachable boundaries. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to demonstrate the impact of parameter variations on the reachable set. Revealing the reachable set’s sensitivity to variations in thrust and drag coefficients, this analysis serves as a framework for considering parameter uncertainty and enables the evaluation of these effects prior to embedding the reachability boundaries into an offline database for guidance applications. The resulting boundaries, representing minimum and maximum ranges for various initial parameters, can be stored offline, allowing interceptors to estimate their own or allied platforms’ kinematic capabilities for cooperative strategies. The tandem tilt-wing UAV features an advanced aerodynamic layout design and is regarded as a solution for small-scale urban air mobility. However, the tandem wing configuration exhibits complex aerodynamic interactions between the front and rear wings during cruise flight and the wing tilt transition process. The objective of this paper is to investigate the aerodynamic coupling characteristics between the front and rear wings of the tandem tilt-wing UAV under level flight and tilt transition conditions while also assessing the influence of the propellers on the aircraft’s aerodynamic performance. Through CFD numerical analysis, the aerodynamic characteristics of various aircraft components are examined at different angles of attack and wing tilt angles, and the underlying reasons for the observed differences and variations are explored. The results indicate that, during level flight, the aerodynamic interference between the wings is primarily dominated by the detrimental influence of the front wing on the rear wing. During the tilt transition process, mutual interactions between the front and rear wings occur as wing tilt angle changes, leading to more drastic variations in lift coefficients and increased control difficulty. However, the propeller’s effect contributes to smoother changes in lift and drag, thereby enhancing aircraft stability. Full article

Due to its superior maneuverability and concealment, the micro flapping-wing aircraft has great application prospects in both military and civilian fields. However, the development and optimization of lightweight materials have always been the key factors limiting performance enhancement. This paper designs the flapping mechanism of a single-degree-of-freedom miniature flapping wing aircraft. In this study, T800 carbon fiber composite material was used as the frame material. Three typical wing membrane materials, namely polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyimide (PI), and non-woven kite fabric, were selected for comparative analysis. Three flapping wing configurations with different stiffness were proposed. These wings adopted carbon fiber composite material frames. The wing membrane material is bonded to the frame through a coating. Inspired by bionics, a flapping wing that mimics the membrane vein structure of insect wings is designed. By changing the type of membrane material and the distribution of carbon fiber composite materials on the wing, the stiffness of the flapping wing can be controlled, thereby affecting the mechanical properties of the flapping wing aircraft. The modal analysis of the flapping-wing structure was conducted using the finite element analysis method, and the experimental prototype was fabricated by using 3D printing technology. To evaluate the influence of different wing membrane materials on lift performance, a high-precision force measurement experimental platform was built, systematic tests were carried out, and the lift characteristics under different flapping frequencies were analyzed. Through computational modeling and experiments, it has been proven that under the same flapping wing frequency, the T800 carbon fiber composite material frame can significantly improve the stiffness and durability of the flapping wing. In addition, the selection of wing membrane materials has a significant impact on lift performance. Among the test materials, the PET wing film demonstrated excellent stability and lift performance under high-frequency conditions. This research provides crucial experimental evidence for the optimal selection of wing membrane materials for micro flapping-wing aircraft, verifies the application potential of T800 carbon fiber composite materials in micro flapping-wing aircraft, and opens up new avenues for the application of advanced composite materials in high-performance micro flapping-wing aircraft. Previous research has demonstrated that the Train Wave Signature (TWS) method enables rapid calculation of pressure waves in straight tunnels. However, its application to subway tunnels with complex structural features remains insufficiently explored. This study proposes a generalized mathematical method integrating TWS with graph theory for the simulation of pressure wave generation, propagation, and reflection in complex tunnel systems. A computational program is implemented using this method for efficient simulation. The proposed method achieves high-accuracy prediction of pressure waves in tunnels with complex geometries compared with field measurements conducted in a high-speed subway tunnel with two shafts. We discuss the impact of iteration time intervals on the results and clarify the minimum time interval required for the calculation. Moreover, the sin-type definition of TWSs enhances the precision of pressure gradient prediction, and omitting low-amplitude pressure and reflected waves from the train can improve computational efficiency without compromising accuracy. This study advances the application of TWSs in tunnels with complex structures and provides a practical solution for aerodynamic analysis in high-speed subway tunnels, balancing accuracy with computational efficiency. The turbine rotor is a core component in many energy conversion systems, where it is subjected to loads such as aerodynamic and centrifugal forces that make it highly susceptible to damage. Consequently, the reliability of the turbine rotor ranks among the key aspects of concern. This paper proposes an efficient approach based on the kriging model to conduct the reliability analysis of a turbine rotor. First, a parametric model of the turbine rotor was established. This parametric model was subsequently applied in a multifactor fluid–structure interaction model used to analyze the working performance of the turbine rotor. Finally, a kriging surrogate model was built and applied using these data in combination with various reliability analysis methods to analyze the structural reliability and reliability sensitivities of the turbine rotor. Furthermore, the reliability sensitivity results indicated that the outlet pressure had the greatest impact on rotor reliability. Thus, the proposed method was shown to have practical application value in the reliability analysis of the rotor structure. Full article

Influence of High-Speed Flow on Aerodynamic Lift of Pantograph at 400 km/h

This study examines pantograph aerodynamic lift at 400 km/h, and uncovers the dynamic behaviors and mechanisms that influence pantograph–catenary performance. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a compressible fluid model and an SST k-ω turbulence model, aerodynamic characteristics were analyzed. Simulation data at 300, 350, and 400 km/h showed lift fluctuation amplitude increases with speed, peaking near 50 N at 400 km/h. Power spectral density (PSD) energy, dominated by low frequencies, peaked around 10 dB/Hz in the low-frequency band, highlighting exacerbated lift instability. Component analysis revealed the smallest lift-to-drag ratio and most significant fluctuations at the head, primarily due to boundary-layer separation and vortex shedding from its non-streamlined design. Turbulence energy analysis identified the head and base as main turbulence sources; however, base vibrations are absorbed by the vehicle body, while the head causes pantograph–catenary vibrations due to direct contact. These findings confirm that aerodynamic instability at the head is the main cause of contact force fluctuations. Optimizing head design is necessary to suppress fluctuations, ensuring safe operation at 400 km/h and above. Results provide a theoretical foundation for aerodynamic optimization and improved dynamic performance of high-speed pantographs. Full article

Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines in Emerging Energy Applications (1979–2025): Global Trends and Technological Gaps Revealed by a Bibliometric Analysis and Review

This study provides a comprehensive overview of vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) for emerging energy applications by combining a bibliometric analysis and a thematic mini-review. Scopus-indexed publications from 1979 to 2025 were analyzed using PRISMA guidelines and bibliometric tools (Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer) to map global research trends, and a parallel mini-review distilled recent advances into five thematic areas: aerodynamic strategies, advanced materials, urban integration, hybrid systems, and floating offshore platforms. The results reveal that VAWT research output has surged since 2006, led by China with strong contributions from Europe and North America, and is concentrated in leading renewable energy journals. Dominant topics include computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, performance optimization, wind–solar hybrid integration, and adaptation to turbulent urban environments. Technologically, active and passive aerodynamic innovations have boosted performance albeit with added complexity, remaining mostly at moderate technology readiness (TRL 3–5), while advanced composite materials are improving durability and fatigue life. Emerging applications in microgrids, building-integrated systems, and offshore floating platforms leverage VAWTs’ omnidirectional, low-noise operation, although challenges persist in scaling up, control integration, and long-term field validation. Overall, VAWTs are gaining relevance as a complement to conventional turbines in the sustainable energy transition, and this study’s integrated approach identifies critical gaps and high-priority research directions to accelerate VAWT development and help transition these turbines from niche prototypes to mainstream renewable solutions.
