Acoustic tweezers, as advanced micro/nano manipulation tools, play a pivotal role in biomedical engineering, microfluidics, and precision manufacturing. However, piezoelectric-based acoustic tweezers face performance limitations due to multi-physical coupling effects during microfabrication. This study proposes a novel approach using injection molding with embedded electronics (IMEs) technology to fabricate piezoelectric micro-ultrasonic transducers with micron-scale precision, addressing the critical issue of acoustic node displacement caused by thermal–mechanical coupling in injection molding—a problem that impairs wave transmission efficiency and operational stability. To optimize the IME process parameters, a hybrid multi-objective optimization framework integrating NSGA-II and MOPSO is developed, aiming to simultaneously minimize acoustic node displacement, volumetric shrinkage, and residual stress distribution. Key process variables—packing pressure (80–120 MPa), melt temperature (230–280 °C), and packing time (15–30 s)—are analyzed via finite element modeling (FEM) and validated through in situ tie bar elongation measurements. The results show a 27.3% reduction in node displacement amplitude and a 19.6% improvement in wave transmission uniformity compared to conventional methods. This methodology enhances acoustic tweezers’ operational stability and provides a generalizable framework for multi-physics optimization in MEMS manufacturing, laying a foundation for next-generation applications in single-cell manipulation, lab-on-a-chip systems, and nanomaterial assembly. The enduring manufacturing goals are increasingly shifting toward ultra-precision manufacturing and micro-nano fabrication, driven by the demand for sophisticated products. Unconventional machining processes such as electrochemical jet machining (ECJM), electrical discharge machining (EDM), electrochemical machining (ECM), abrasive water jet machining (AWJM), and laser beam machining (LBM) have been widely adopted as feasible alternatives to traditional methods, enabling the production of high-quality engineering components with specific characteristics. ECJM, a non-contact machining technology, employs electrodes on the nozzle and workpiece to establish an electrical circuit via the jet. As a prominent special machining technology, ECJM has demonstrated significant advantages, such as rapid, non-thermal, and stress-free machining capabilities, in past research. This review is dedicated to outline the research progress of ECJM, focusing on its fundamental concepts, material processing capabilities, technological advancements, and its variants (e.g., ultrasonic-, laser-, abrasive-, and magnetism-assisted ECJM) along with their applications. Special attention is given to the application of ECJM in the semiconductor and biomedical fields, where the demand for ultra-precision components is most pronounced. Furthermore, this review explores recent innovations in process optimization, significantly boosting machining efficiency and quality. This review not only provides a snapshot of the current status of ECJM technology, but also discusses the current challenges and possible future improvements of the technology. Full article

Designing and manufacturing devices at the micro- and nanoscales offers significant advantages, including high precision, quick response times, high energy density ratios, and low production costs. These benefits have driven extensive research in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS), resulting in various classifications of materials and manufacturing techniques, which are ultimately used to produce different classifications of MEMS devices. The current work aims to systematically organize the literature on MEMS in biomedical devices, encompassing past achievements, present developments, and future prospects. This paper reviews the current research trends, highlighting significant material advancements and emerging technologies in biomedical MEMS in order to meet the current challenges facing the field, such as ensuring biocompatibility, achieving miniaturization, and maintaining precise control in biological environments. It also explores projected applications, including use in advanced diagnostic tools, targeted drug delivery systems, and innovative therapeutic devices. By mapping out these trends and prospects, this review will help identify current research gaps in the biomedical MEMS field. By pinpointing these gaps, researchers can focus on addressing unmet needs and advancing state-of-the-art biomedical MEMS technology. Ultimately, this can lead to the development of more effective and innovative biomedical devices, improving patient care and outcomes. Full article

Additive Manufacturing (AM), as a revolutionary breakthrough in advanced manufacturing paradigms, leverages its unique layer-by-layer construction advantage to exhibit significant technological superiority in the fabrication of complex structural components for aerospace, biomedical, and other fields. However, when addressing industrial-grade precision manufacturing requirements, key challenges such as the multi-scale characteristics of surface damage precursors, interference from background noise, and the scarcity of high-quality training samples severely constrain the intelligent transformation of AM quality monitoring systems. This study proposes an innovative microscopic polarization YOLOv11-LSF intelligent inspection framework, which establishes an automated non-destructive testing methodology for AM device micro-nano damage precursors through triple technological innovations, effectively breaking through existing technical bottlenecks. Firstly, a multi-scale perception module is constructed based on the Large Separable Kernel Attention mechanism, significantly enhancing the network’s feature detection capability in complex industrial scenarios. Secondly, the cross-level local network VoV-GSCSP module is designed utilizing GSConv and a one-time aggregation method, resulting in a Slim-neck architecture that significantly reduces model complexity without compromising accuracy. Thirdly, an innovative simulation strategy incorporating physical features for damage precursors is proposed, constructing a virtual and real integrated training sample library and breaking away from traditional deep learning reliance on large-scale labeled data. Experimental results demonstrate that compared to the baseline model, the accuracy (P) of the YOLOv11-LSF model is increased by 1.6%, recall (R) by 1.6%, mAP50 by 1.5%, and mAP50-95 by 2.8%. The model hits an impressive detection accuracy of 99% for porosity-related micro-nano damage precursors and remains at 94% for cracks. Its unique small sample adaptation capability and robustness under complex conditions provide a reliable technical solution for industrial-grade AM quality monitoring. This research advances smart manufacturing quality innovation and enables cross-scale micro-nano damage inspection in advanced manufacturing. Full article

Micro-nano measurement represents a critical engineering focus in the advancement of micro-nano fabrication technologies. Exploring advanced micro-nano measurement methods is a key direction for driving progress in micro-nano manufacturing. This study proposes a confocal measurement method utilizing a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) to simulate a binary Fresnel lens for 3D focusing, enabling the non-mechanical measurement of spatial positions on sample surfaces. Specifically, it introduces a 3D focusing method based on LC-SLM, constructs a confocal microscopy 3D focusing system, and conducts lateral focusing experiments and axial focusing experiments. Experimental results demonstrate that the system can freely adjust lateral focusing positions. Within an axial focusing range of 900 μm, it achieves axial measurement accuracy exceeding 1 μm, with a maximum resolution capability of approximately 16.667 nm. Compared to similar confocal microscopy systems, this method allows rapid adjustment of lateral focusing positions without regenerating phase grayscale maps, achieves comparable axial measurement accuracy, and enhances measurement speed. This review summarizes the development of surface treatments applied to dental implants with the aim of improving their clinical performance. It covers the advancement of various techniques, from the conventional to the more advanced ones. Among the recent advancements, surface texturing has enabled atomic and structural modifications of implant surfaces at the micro- and nanoscales, improving tissue–material interactions. Acid etching and atomic layer deposition applied onto implant surfaces results in optimized osseointegration by stimulating the deposition and proliferation of osteoblasts and fibroblasts. The atomic layer deposition of TiO2, ZnO, ZrO2, and CaCO3 has proven effective in improving osseointegration and tackling corrosion. Corrosion is still an important issue, whereby metals released from titanium implants and their associated degradation products cause local and systemic side effects, leaving a wide avenue for future research. The development of hybrid dental implants is envisaged through new materials and technologies, such as additive manufacturing, which may play a critical role in the fabrication of patient-specific implants with tailored nano-topography capable of enhancing such properties as antibacterial activity and osseointegration. This paper presents a comprehensive review of quality control (QC) and reliability research in micro–nano technology, which is vital for advancing microelectronics, biomedical engineering, and manufacturing. Micro- and nanotechnologies operate at different scales, yet both require precise control to ensure the performance and durability of small-scale systems. This review synthesizes key quality control methodologies, including statistical quality control methods, machine learning and AI-driven methods, and advanced techniques emphasizing their relevance to nanotechnology applications. The paper also discusses the application of micro/nanotechnology in quality control in other technological areas. The discussion extends to the unique reliability challenges posed by micro–nano systems, such as failure modes related to stiction, material fatigue, and environmental factors. Advanced reliability testing and modeling approaches are highlighted for their effectiveness in predicting performance and mitigating risks. Additionally, the paper explores the integration of emerging technologies to enhance and improve reliability in micro–nano manufacturing. By examining both established and novel techniques, this review underscores the evolving nature of quality control and reliability research in the field. It identifies key areas for future investigation, particularly in the adaptation of these methods to the increasing complexity of micro–nano systems. The paper concludes by proposing research directions that can further optimize quality control and reliability to ensure the continued advancement and industrial application of micro–nano technologies. Advances in manufacturing technology are allowing for the realization of interaction circuit with microstructures. The capability to produce small circuit structures is allowing new opportunities for vacuum electronic devices producing terahertz (THz) frequency radiation, which is impractical with traditional machining technology. This publication reviews recent progress on advanced microfabrication technologies applicable to interaction circuits of THz vacuum electronic devices, including LIGA/UV-LIGA (Ultraviolet Lithographic, Galvonoformung and Abformung), deep reactive ion etching (DRIE), micro/nano computer numerical control (CNC) milling, three-dimension (3D) printing, etc., and describes the current State-of-the-Art of their applications. Corneal endothelial dysfunction is a leading cause of vision loss globally, frequently requiring corneal transplantation. However, the limited availability of donor tissues, particularly in developing countries, has spurred on the exploration of tissue engineering strategies, with a focus on polymer biomaterials as scaffolds for corneal endotlhelium regeneration. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in polymer biomaterials, focusing on their role in supporting the growth, differentiation, and functional maintenance of human corneal endothelial cells (CECs). Key properties of scaffold materials, including optical clarity, biocompatibility, biodegradability, mechanical stability, permeability, and surface wettability, are discussed in detail. The review also explores the latest innovations in micro- and nano-topological morphologies, fabrication techniques such as electrospinning and 3D/4D bioprinting, and the integration of drug delivery systems into scaffolds. Despite significant progress, challenges remain in translating these technologies to clinical applications. Future directions for research are highlighted, including the need for improved biomaterial combinations, a deeper understanding of CEC biology, and the development of scalable manufacturing processes. This review aims to serve as a resource for researchers and clinician–scientists seeking to advance the field of corneal endothelium tissue engineering. Full article

Nanogenerators possess the capability to harvest faint energy from the environment. Among them, thermoelectric (TE), triboelectric, piezoelectric (PE), and moisture-enabled nanogenerators represent promising approaches to micro–nano energy collection. These nanogenerators have seen considerable progress in material optimization and structural design. Printing technology has facilitated the large-scale manufacturing of nanogenerators. Although inks can be compatible with most traditional functional materials, this inevitably leads to a decrease in the electrical performance of the materials, necessitating control over the rheological properties of the inks. Furthermore, printing technology offers increased structural design flexibility. This review provides a comprehensive framework for ink-based nanogenerators, encompassing ink material optimization and device structural design, including improvements in ink performance, control of rheological properties, and efficient energy harvesting structures. Additionally, it highlights ink-based nanogenerators that incorporate textile technology and hybrid energy technologies, reviewing their latest advancements in energy collection and self-powered sensing. The discussion also addresses the main challenges faced and future directions for development. Full article

The orthodontic supply market is a prosperous billion-dollar industry, driven by an increasing demand for orthodontic appliances. The supremacy of metallic first-generation biomaterials is evident for manufacturing brackets, archwires, bands, and other components due to their well-recognized chemical inertness, spontaneous passivation, biocompatibility, and favorable mechanical properties combination. However, the oral cavity is the ultimate corrosion-promoting environment for any metallic material. In this work, the general picture of the intraoral degradation of fixed orthodontic appliances is first addressed, from the causes to the harmful effects and their oral clinical implications. Current mitigation strategies are also pointed out, including the alloys’ bulk composition adjustment combined with new and advanced manufacturing processes and/or their surface treatment or coating deposition. The versatile use of thin films and coatings stands out with different deposition technologies: Many in vivo and in vitro efforts have been devoted to oral aging, from monolithic to composite architectures and micro- to nano-scale materials, to meet the best and safest oral practice demands. Unfortunately, literature data suggest that even the existing commercially available protective coatings have drawbacks and are fallible. Further multidisciplinary research is still required to effectively mitigate the corrosion behavior of fixed orthodontic appliances. Full article

Advanced micro/nano-flexible sensors, displays, electronic skins, and other related devices provide considerable benefits compared to traditional technologies, aiding in the compactness of devices, enhancing energy efficiency, and improving system reliability. The creation of cost-effective, scalable, and high-resolution fabrication techniques for micro/nanostructures built from optoelectronic materials is crucial for downsizing to enhance overall efficiency and boost integration density. The electrohydrodynamic jet (EHD) printing technology is a novel additive manufacturing process that harnesses the power of electricity to create fluid motion, offering unparalleled benefits and a diverse spectrum of potential uses for microelectronic printing in terms of materials, precision, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness. This article summarizes various applications of EHD printing by categorizing them as zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) printing materials. Zero-dimensional (quantum dot) materials are predominantly utilized in LED applications owing to their superb optoelectronic properties, high color fidelity, adjustable color output, and impressive fluorescence quantum yield. One- and two-dimensional materials are primarily employed in FET and sensor technologies due to their distinctive physical structure and exceptional optoelectronic properties. Three-dimensional materials encompass nanometals, nanopolymers, nanoglass, and nanoporous materials, with nanometals and nanopolymers finding widespread application in EHD printing technology. We hope our work will facilitate the development of small-feature-size, large-scale flexible electronic devices via EHD printing. Full article

Ultrafast lasers are proven and continually evolving manufacturing tools. Concurrently, additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a key area of interest for 3D fabrication of objects with arbitrary geometries. Use of ultrafast lasers for AM presents possibilities for next generation manufacturing techniques for hard-to-process materials, transparent materials, and micro- and nano-manufacturing. Of particular interest are selective laser melting/sintering (SLM/SLS), multiphoton lithography (MPL), laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT), pulsed laser deposition (PLD), and welding. The development, applications, and recent advancements of these technologies are described in this review as an overview and delineation of the burgeoning ultrafast laser AM field. As they mature, their adoption by industry and incorporation into commercial systems will be facilitated by process advancements such as: process monitoring and control, increased throughput, and their integration into hybrid manufacturing systems. Recent progress regarding these aspects is also reviewed. Full article
