The description and assessment of braided river architecture are usually limited by the paucity of real geological datasets from field observations; due to the complexity and diversity of rivers, traditional evaluation models are difficult to apply to braided river systems in different climatic and tectonic settings. This study aims to establish an architectural model suitable for the study area setting by introducing a hierarchical analysis approach through well-exposed three-dimensional outcrops along the Second Songhua River. A micro–macro four-level hierarchical framework is adopted to obtain a detailed anatomy of sedimentary outcrops: lithofacies, elements, element associations, and archetypes. Fourteen lithofacies are identified: three conglomerates, seven sandstones, and four mudstones. Five elements provide the basic components of the river system framework: fluvial channel, laterally accreting bar, downstream accreting bar, abandoned channel, and floodplain. Four combinations of adjacent elements are determined: fluvial channel and downstream accreting bar, fluvial channel and laterally accreting bar, erosionally based fluvial channel and laterally accreting bar, and abandoned channel and floodplain. Considering the sedimentary evolution process, the braided river prototype, which is an element-based channel filling unit, is established by documenting three contact combinations between different elements and six types of fine-grained deposits’ preservation positions in the elements. Empirical relationships are developed among the bankfull channel depth, mean bankfull channel depth, and bankfull channel width. For the braided river systems, the establishment of the model promotes understanding of the architecture and evolution, and the application of the hierarchical analysis approach provides a basis for outcrop, underground reservoir, and tank experiments. The implementation of the trans-European tourist cycle route network “EuroVelo” is fostering new strategic importance for non-motorized mobility and the associated practice of cycling tourism. Indeed, slow tourism offers a pathway for the development of inland areas. The infrastructure supporting it, such as long-distance cycling and walking paths, can act as a vital connection, stimulating regeneration in peripheral territories by enhancing environmental and landscape assets, as well as preserving heritage, local identity, and culture. The regeneration of peri-urban landscapes through soft mobility is recognized as the cornerstone for accessibility to material and immaterial resources (including ecosystem services) for multiple categories of users, including the most vulnerable, especially following the restoration of green-area systems and non-urbanized areas with degraded ecosystems. Considering the forthcoming implementation of the Magna Grecia cycling route, the southernmost segment of the “EuroVelo” network traversing three regions in southern Italy, this contribution briefly examines the necessity of defining new development policies to effectively integrate sustainable slow tourism with the enhancement of environmental and landscape values in the coastal areas along the route. Specifically, this case study focuses on a coastal stretch characterized by significant morphological and environmental features and notable landscapes interwoven with densely built environments. In this area, environmental and landscape values face considerable threats from scattered, irregular, low-density settlements, abandoned sites, and other inappropriate constructions along the coastline. This study explores the role of community-centered farm-based hospitality in promoting sustainable rural development, with a focus on South Tyrol, Italy. A survey of 461 local residents assessed perceptions of agritourism’s impact on agricultural heritage, environmental sustainability, and community well-being. Factor analysis identified two main constructs—Agroheritage Sustainability and Empowered Eco-Tourism—which together capture the multifaceted benefits of agritourism. Agroheritage Sustainability reflects the preservation of traditional farming practices, cultural landscapes, and intergenerational knowledge, emphasizing the role of tourism in maintaining cultural identity and preventing land abandonment. Empowered Eco-Tourism highlights the socio-economic benefits of sustainable tourism, including community empowerment, environmental stewardship, and the creation of new economic opportunities. The study’s findings indicate that local residents view agritourism as a holistic approach that supports rural livelihoods while preserving cultural heritage and promoting ecological resilience. The analysis further supports the potential of farm-based hospitality as a model for sustainable rural development, aligning closely with EU policies and global best practices. The Roter Hahn initiative in South Tyrol serves as a practical example of this approach, demonstrating the value of certification programs in enhancing transparency, quality, and sustainability. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers and tourism developers seeking to promote sustainable rural tourism globally. The contribution of this research lies in its empirical validation of a dual-construct model that links community engagement with agroecological and cultural sustainability, offering a transferable framework for evaluating agritourism as a lever for sustainable rural development in diverse regional contexts. Although it is more than a century since it was first marketed, acetaminophen remains one of the most popular analgesic agents. In addition, acetaminophen has recently been applied to multimodal analgesia in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and its consumption significantly increased during the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 as well as diclofenac and ibuprofen. However, the detailed mode of analgesic action of acetaminophen is still unclear. In the present study, we comprehensively discuss conventional, recognized, and postulated mechanisms of analgesic acetaminophen and highlight the current mechanistic concepts while comparing with diclofenac and ibuprofen. Acetaminophen inhibits cyclooxygenase with selectivity for cyclooxygenase-2, which is higher than that of ibuprofen but lower than that of diclofenac. In contrast to diclofenac and ibuprofen, however, anti-inflammatory effects of acetaminophen depend on the extracellular conditions of inflamed tissues. Since the discovery of cyclooxygenase-3 in the canine brain, acetaminophen had been hypothesized to inhibit such a cyclooxygenase-1 variant selectively. However, this hypothesis was abandoned because cyclooxygenase-3 was revealed not to be physiologically and clinically relevant to humans. Recent studies suggest that acetaminophen is deacetylated to 4-aminophenol in the liver and after crossing the blood–brain barrier, it is metabolically converted into N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)arachidonoylamide. This metabolite exhibits bioactivities by targeting transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 channel, cannabinoid receptor 1, Cav3.2 calcium channel, anandamide, and cyclooxygenase, mediating acetaminophen analgesia. These targets may be partly associated with diclofenac and ibuprofen. The perspective of acetaminophen as a prodrug will be crucial for a future strategy to develop analgesics with higher tolerability and activity. Full article

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a complex and hidden process of storing surplus water under the ground surface and extracting it as, when and where needed. Evaluation of the success of any MAR project is challenging due to uncertainty in estimating the hydrogeological characteristics of the subsurface media. This paper demonstrates the use of a groundwater model (MODFLOW) to evaluate a new, large-scale regional MAR project in the agricultural heartland in Punjab, Pakistan. In this MAR project, flood waters have been diverted to the bed of an abandoned canal, where 144 recharge wells (the wells for accelerating the recharge into the aquifer) have been constructed to accelerate the recharge to the aquifer. The model was calibrated for a period of five years from October 2015 to June 2020 on a monthly stress period and the resulting water levels were simulated till 2035. The water balance components and future response of the aquifer to different scenarios up to 2035 including with and without MAR situations are presented. The model simulations showed that MAR can contribute to the replenishment of the aquifer and its potential for the case study site to contribute significantly to the management of groundwater and to enhance supplies for intensive agriculture. It was further established that MODFLOW can help in the evaluation of effectiveness of a MAR scheme. This study is unique as it evaluates a significantly large MAR project in an area where this practice has not been developed for improving groundwater access for large scale irrigation. The model provides guidelines for decision makers in the region as well as for the global community and livelihood benefits for rural communities. Full article

Dehesas are mosaics of open grassland and standalone trees that are diversity reservoirs. However, they have recently faced abandonment and intensification, being replaced by plantations of fast-growing trees or subject to encroachment. Following a change in dehesa communities and structure, a change in soil microbial diversity and functionality in dehesas is expected, but dehesas’ microbial diversity is still a big unknown. In this work, we bring to light the soil prokaryotic taxonomic diversity in dehesa ecosystems and present a first approach to assessing their metabolic diversity through metabarcoding data. For this, we compared three dehesas dominated by different tree species: (i) one dehesa dominated by Quercus ilex; (ii) one dominated by Pinus pinea; and (iii) one dominated by a mixture of Q. ilex and Q. suber. At each dehesa, samples were taken under the canopy and in the open grassland, as well as through two seasons of peak vegetation productivity (autumn and spring). Our results show the following findings: (1) seasonality plays an important role in prokaryotic richness, showing higher values in autumn, and higher evenness in spring; (2) the effect of seasonality on the soil’s prokaryotic diversity is often modulated by the effect of tree species and canopy; (3) taxonomic diversity is driven mainly by the site effects, i.e., the opposite of the metabolic diversity that seemed to be driven by complex interactions among seasons, tree species, and canopies. In recent years, the concept of the commons has gained relevance across academic, legal and civic spheres as an alternative framework for managing shared resources. Rooted in Elinor Ostrom’s seminal work on collective governance, contemporary debates on the commons increasingly challenge the traditional binary of private versus public ownership by foregrounding the social function of these resources and the role of their communities in their administration. Urban commons, in particular, have emerged as dynamic spaces of experimentation, where local actors reclaim underutilised or abandoned assets and activate them through bottom-up processes of care, cultural production, and civic innovation. While international literature provides a robust conceptual foundation for understanding commoning practices, their practical implementation mostly depends on local specificities, such as legal and social contexts. Despite the important milestone of the Rodotà Commission’s proposal (2007) and Law 168/2017 on collective domains, the Italian regulatory framework remains highly fragmented, with regional and municipal regulations pioneering policies and practices frequently driven by community-led efforts to redefine the use and governance of public assets. This paper contributes to the growing debate on urban commons by investigating how, since 2011, experiences of collaborative care of the commons in Southern Italy have rekindled interest in the issue raised in 2007, highlighting a strong connection between the regulatory and social dimensions of these processes. The study develops a methodological framework—the COMmons Places ASSessment (COMPASS)—to evaluate the enabling conditions and governance dynamics of these processes. The research specifically focuses on five case studies in the Campania region, where diverse actors have mobilised to reclaim and transform public heritage through cultural, social, and creative activities. From the results, insights on collective management practices emerge potentials and criticalities of the analysed governance, as well as of the designed decision-making process and their effectiveness for the open, participatory, and sustainable management of urban commons. Wildfires are integral to many forest ecosystems, yet their ecological effects are often influenced by historical land use and management. In this study, we assess the short-term impacts of fire and management on Castanea sativa Mill. stands in the fayal-brezal zone of northern Tenerife (Canary Islands), where traditional agroforestry systems have been widely abandoned. We established 12 transects across four stands: managed-burned, managed-unburned, oldfield-burned, and oldfield-unburned. We analyzed forest structure, understory species richness and composition, and soil nutrient content one year after a large wildfire. Forest structure has primarily been determined by management history, with oldfield plots showing greater tree density, basal area, and basal sprouting. Fire has had a limited effect on tree mortality, affecting ~10% of individuals on average. Understory species richness was significantly higher in managed plots, particularly those affected by fire, suggesting a positive interaction between disturbance and management. Species composition differed significantly among treatments, with Indicator Species Analysis identifying distinct taxa associated with each condition. Fire in oldfield plots led to increased compositional similarity with managed stands, indicating fire’s potential homogenizing effect. Principal Component Analysis of soil nutrients did not reveal clear treatment-related patterns, which was probably due to microenvironmental variability and the short post-fire interval. Overall, our results highlight the dominant role of land-use legacy in structuring these forests, with fire acting as a secondary but influential driver, revealing significant changes in species composition as well as in species richness. These findings have direct relevance for conservation and restoration strategies as well as for maintenance in these stands of Castanea sativa. They should also encourage managers of these protected areas, where land abandonment and fire are increasingly shaping forest dynamics. Full article

Geothermal energy is a low-carbon and reliable energy resource capable of generating both heat and electricity from the Earth’s internal thermal energy. While geothermal development has traditionally been focused on onshore sites, offshore geothermal resources are attracting growing interest due to advancements in technology, the search for alternative baseload power, and the opportunity to repurpose decommissioned petroleum infrastructure. Recent efforts include utilizing abandoned oil and gas fields to adapt existing infrastructure for geothermal use, as well as exploring high-temperature geothermal zones such as submarine volcanoes and hotspots. Despite these initiatives, research output, scientific publications and patents remain relatively limited, suggesting that offshore geothermal technology is still in its early stages. Countries like Italy, Indonesia and Turkey are actively investigating geothermal resources in volcanic marine areas, while North Sea countries and the USA are assessing the feasibility of converting mature oil and gas fields into geothermal energy sites. These diverse strategies underscore the regional geological and infrastructure conditions in shaping development approaches. Although expertise from the oil and gas industry can accelerate technological progress in marine geothermal energy, economic challenges remain. Therefore, improving cost competitiveness is crucial for offshore geothermal energy. Full article

Accelerating the recovery of compacted soils caused by logging machinery using bioengineering techniques is a key goal of Sustainable Forest Management. This research was conducted on an abandoned skid trail with a uniform 15% slope and a history of heavy traffic, located in the Nav forest compartment of northern Iran. The main objectives were to assess (a) soil physical properties 35 years after skidding by a tracked bulldozer, (b) the impact of natural alder regeneration on soil recovery, and (c) the contribution of alder fine-root development to the restoration of compacted soils in beech stands. Soil physical properties and fine root biomass were analyzed across three depth classes (0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, 20–30 cm) and five locations (left wheel track (LT), between wheel tracks (BT), right wheel track (RT)) all with alder trees, and additionally control points inside the trail without alder trees (CPWA), as well as outside control points with alder trees (CPA). Sampling points near alder trees (RT, LT, BT) were compared to CPWA and CPA. CPA had the lowest soil bulk density, followed by LT, BT, RT, and CPWA. Bulk density was highest (1.35 ± 0.07 g cm−3) at the 0–10 cm depth and lowest (1.08 ± 0.4 g cm−3) at 20–30 cm. The fine root biomass at 0–10 cm depth (0.23 ± 0.21 g dm−3) was significantly higher than at deeper levels. Skid trail sampling points showed higher fine root biomass than CPWA but lower than CPA, by several orders of magnitude. Alder tree growth significantly reduced soil bulk density, aiding soil recovery in the study area. However, achieving optimal conditions will require additional time. Full article

Background/Objectives: In the last decade, there has been a notable increase in the prevalence of cognitive decline among the elderly population. This phenomenon is further compounded by the concurrent rise in life expectancy, indicating a growing concern for the health and well-being of individuals in this demographic. Dementia has become a disease with a strong social impact, not exclusively limited to its health dimension. It is generally accepted that lifestyle factors and psychological attitudes toward life challenges may serve as protective mechanisms against pathological cognitive decline. The objective of this contribution is to evaluate the impact of lifestyle factors (e.g., physical activity, employment history, nutrition, technology use, etc.), stressors (e.g., illness, rare events, abandonments, home moving, etc.), and sociability (e.g., marriage, active friend network, children proximity, work relationships, etc.) at the onset of pathological cognitive frailty. Methods: In this study, a semi-structured interview was administered to 32 individuals over the age of 65 during their initial neuropsychological evaluation for suspected dementia. Results: Linear regressions with Mini Mental State Examination scores indicated that lifestyle and sociability factors offer a degree of protection against cognitive decline, while stressors were found to be unrelated to this phenomenon. Conclusions: The utilization of contemporary technologies, the possession of a driver’s license, and the maintenance of an active social network have been demonstrated to possess a high degree of predictive value with respect to cognitive reserve in the context of aging. Nonetheless, it is currently facing significant challenges due to the increasing intensity and frequency of forest fires observed in recent decades. The deterioration of traditional agricultural practices, the proliferation of monocultures, and alterations in land use patterns have significantly exacerbated these challenges. Consequently, the landscape has undergone considerable transformations, resulting in a decline in biodiversity and a weakening of local economies. This study examines land use in mainland Portugal from 1995 to 2018, utilising data on land occupation, land cover, and burnt areas from the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests. The cartographic analysis of three periods—1995, 2007, and 2018—along with the fire data recorded between 1996 and 2018, enabled the observation of changes in the predominant land use and land cover (LULC) classes, particularly among forests, scrubland, and agricultural areas. The results highlight a significant increase in forested areas, especially eucalyptus, as well as urbanisation, while scrubland and agricultural areas have decreased. Using specific LULC level 4, and burnt (BA) and unburnt (NB) areas, temporary crops decreased substantially (−14% NB/−4% BA 1995–2007; −23% NB by 2018). Eucalyptus showed strong continuous growth (16% NB/35% BA 1995–2007; 23% NB/47% BA 2007–2018). Maritime pine suffered severe losses, especially in burnt areas (−42%/−28%). Cork oak remained stable (1–4% growth). Other oaks showed minimal changes. Bushes (scrubland) declined sharply post-2007 (−31% BA/−6% NB). The most significant transformation occurred between 1995 and 2007, particularly in the south of Portugal, where wildfires promoted the replacement of maritime pine with eucalyptus, a species that offers greater profitability, leading to agricultural abandonment in burned areas. Traditionally, disaster research has focused on well-being consequences or socio-economic effects, often overlooking the association between disaster-brought life changes (i.e., transition) and mental health. Therefore, in this online longitudinal survey, we aimed to evaluate the long-term transitional impact of the flood in Western Germany and the wildfire in British Columbia, Canada, both of which happened during the summer of 2021. Additionally, we aimed to examine the relationships among these disaster-specific transitions and mental health, as well as feelings of being abandoned by the community and government. In this multi-site, multi-disaster study, 48 BC and 41 Western Germany adults were first assessed in 2021, then reassessed in 2022. During both waves, respondents completed the 12-item TIS, the 21-item DASS, the 8-item PCL, and the 2-item feeling of abandonment instrument (community and government). Results indicated that (a) the Germany flood produced higher material and psychological change in 2021 than in 2022; (b) the BC fire produced higher psychological change in 2021 than 2022, but produced modest material change in both time points; (c) the BC-fire group reported greater mental distress in 2021 than 2022, the Germany-flood group reported moderate-to-severe mental distress in both waves, and neither group experienced PTSD-like symptoms; (d) in both groups, evacuees experienced more change and distress than non-evacuees; (e) BC-fire evacuees and Germany-flood non-evacuees indicated that they felt more abandoned by their community than their government; and (f) over time, only psychological changes were reliably associated with distress in both groups. We speculated that following disasters, people’s mental health was largely shaped by the levels of disaster-induced life changes, particularly psychological changes that unfold over time. The European Union’s 2030 target of decreasing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% has resulted in a significant uptake of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the European power system, primarily wind and solar power, as well as the closure of conventional power plants that mostly used fossil fuels. The European Union’s members have accelerated the process of energy transition driven by climate change, and public authorities’ involvement in this process is impressive. The goal of this study is to present a broad overview of the existing challenges for the energy transition in Europe and how they can affect the reliability and stability of the interconnected power system in Europe and future investments, focusing especially on Greece. Unfortunately, this environmentally friendly transition is taking place without the required amount of investment in electrical energy storage technology, which raises the risk of a blackout due to the high predicted variability of RES. The gradual abandonment of conventional energy production units such as natural gas in the coming decades will intensify the problem of frequency regulation, which will become even more acute due to the particularly increased installed capacity in RESs across Europe and Greece. The European Power System, being partially unprepared for the energy transition, frequently faces a paradox: it rejects green power originating from high-RES production because of low demand, a lack of transmission line interconnections, or extremely low energy storage capacity. This paper examines all the prerequisites, including how the European electrical transmission system will be developed in the future and how new energy storage technologies will be used. Lastly, Greece’s energy future and potential risks associated with realizing the environmental goals of the European Green Deal is studied using a PESTEL analysis. Full article

Spatial and Temporal Aspects of Fungicide Resistance in Venturia inaequalis (Apple Scab) Populations in Northern Germany

Venturia inaequalis, the cause of apple scab, readily develops resistance to fungicides with specific modes of action. Knowledge of the spatial and temporal pattern of resistance development is therefore relevant to fruit producers and their consultants. In the Lower Elbe region of Northern Germany, a two-year survey based on a conidial germination test was conducted, examining fungicide resistance in 35 orchards under Integrated Pest Management (IPM), 16 orchards of susceptible cultivars as well as a further 12 orchards of scab-resistant (Vf) cultivars under organic management, and 34 abandoned or unmanaged sites. No evidence of resistance to SDHI compounds (fluopyram, fluxapyroxad) was found after >5 yr of their regular use. Resistance to anilinopyrimidines (cyprodinil, pyrimethanil) had disappeared 15 yr after its widespread occurrence. Isolates from a few IPM orchards showed a reduced sensitivity to dodine. Double resistance to the MBC compound thiophanate-methyl and the QoI trifloxystrobin was rare in V. inaequalis strains that had achieved breakage of Vf-resistance, but very common (>50%) on scab-susceptible cultivars in IPM, organic and abandoned orchards in the ‘Altes Land’ core area of the Lower Elbe region, and in IPM orchards in the periphery. We conclude that resistance to QoI and MBC fungicides is persistent even decades after their last use, and that the core area harbours a uniform population adapted to intensive crop protection, whereas isolated orchards in the periphery are colonised by discrete populations of V. inaequalis.
