This study analyses the effectiveness of a contextualized teaching and learning sequence (TLS) based on forensic entomology (FE) to disprove the idea of spontaneous generation (SG) among students enrolled in the Higher Vocational Education and Training (VET) Cycle in Pathological Anatomy and Cytodiagnosis. Through an inquiry- and project-based learning approach, students replicate a version of Francesco Redi’s historical experiments, enabling them to engage with core scientific concepts such as the metamorphic cycle of insects and the role of entomology in forensic science. The research adopts a semiquantitative and exploratory design. It investigates: (1) whether students’ prior knowledge about FE and related biological processes is sufficient to refute SG; (2) to what extent this knowledge is influenced by their previous academic background and gender; and (3) whether a contextualized TLS can significantly enhance their conceptual understanding. The results reveal that most students begin with limited initial knowledge of FE and multiple misconceptions related to SG, irrespective of their previous study. Gender differences were observed at baseline, with women showing lower prior knowledge, but these differences disappeared after the intervention. The post-intervention data demonstrate a significant improvement in student’s ability to reject SG and explain biological processes coherently. The study highlights the importance of integrating entomology into health-related VET programs, both as a means to promote scientific literacy and correct misconceptions and as a pedagogical tool to foster critical thinking. It also highlights the potential and historically grounded methodologies to equalize learning outcomes and strengthen the scientific preparation of future healthcare professionals. Full article

Agroforestry systems (AFSs) enhance long-term carbon sequestration through tree biomass accumulation. As the European Union’s Carbon Farming Certification (CRCF) Regulation now recognizes AFSs in carbon farming (CF) schemes, accurate tree biomass estimation becomes essential for certification. This review examines field-destructive and remote sensing methods for estimating tree aboveground biomass (AGB) in AFSs, with a specific focus on their advantages, limitations, timing, and associated costs. Destructive methods, although accurate and necessary for developing and validating allometric equations, are time-consuming, costly, and labour-intensive. Conversely, satellite- and drone-based remote sensing offer scalable and non-invasive alternatives, increasingly supported by advances in machine learning and high-resolution imagery. Using data from the INNO4CFIs project, which conducted parallel destructive and remote measurements in an AFS in Tuscany (Italy), this study provides a novel quantitative comparison of the resources each method requires. The findings highlight that while destructive measurements remain indispensable for model calibration and new species assessment, their feasibility is limited by practical constraints. Meanwhile, remote sensing approaches, despite some accuracy challenges in heterogeneous AFSs, offer a promising path forward for cost-effective, repeatable biomass monitoring but in turn require reliable field data. The integration of both approaches might represent a valid strategy to optimize precision and resource efficiency in carbon farming applications. Full article

Remote sensing is a widely used tool for crop monitoring to improve water management. Rice, a crop traditionally grown under flooded conditions, requires farmers to understand the relationship between crop reflectance, water depth and final yield. This study focused on seven commercial rice fields in 2022 and six in 2023, analyzing the correlations between water depth and Sentinel-2 reflectance over two growing seasons in Valencia, Spain. During the tillering stage across both seasons, water depth showed positive correlations with visible bands and negative correlations with NIR and SWIR bands. There were no correlations with the indices NDVI, GNDVI, NDRE and NDWI. The NIR band showed significant correlations across both seasons, with R2 values of 0.69 and 0.71, respectively. In addition, the calculation of NIR anomalies for each field proved to be a good indicator of final yield anomalies. In 2022, anomalies above 10% corresponded to yield deviations above 500 kg·ha−1, while in 2023, anomalies above 15% were associated with yield deviations above 1000 kg·ha−1. The response of final yield to water level was positive up to average values of 9 cm. The use of the NIR band during the rice crop tillering stage can support farmers in improving irrigation management. Full article

SGLT2 Inhibitors: Multifaceted Therapeutic Agents in Cardiometabolic and Renal Diseases

Background: Sodium–glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is), initially developed as antihyperglycemic agents, have emerged as multifunctional therapeutics with profound cardiorenal and metabolic benefits. Their unique insulin-independent mechanism, targeting renal glucose reabsorption, distinguishes them from conventional antidiabetic drugs. Mechanisms and Clinical Evidence: SGLT2is induce glycosuria, reduce hyperglycemia, and promote weight loss through increased caloric excretion. Beyond glycemic control, they modulate tubuloglomerular feedback, attenuate glomerular hyperfiltration, and exert systemic effects via natriuresis, ketone utilization, and anti-inflammatory pathways. Landmark trials (DAPA-HF, EMPEROR-Reduced, CREDENCE, DAPA-CKD) demonstrate robust reductions in heart failure (HF) hospitalizations, cardiovascular mortality, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, irrespective of diabetes status. Adipose Tissue and Metabolic Effects: SGLT2is mitigate obesity-associated adiposopathy by shifting macrophage polarization (M1 to M2), reducing proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6), and enhancing adipose tissue browning (UCP1 upregulation) and mitochondrial biogenesis (via PGC-1α/PPARα). Modest weight loss (~2–4 kg) occurs, though compensatory hyperphagia may limit long-term effects. Emerging Applications: Potential roles in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and neurodegenerative disorders are under investigation, driven by pleiotropic effects on metabolism and inflammation. Conclusions: SGLT2is represent a paradigm shift in managing T2DM, HF, and CKD, with expanding implications for metabolic syndrome. Future research should address interindividual variability, combination therapies, and non-glycemic indications to optimize their therapeutic potential. Full article

Background: The medial (MG) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) muscles exhibit differential activation patterns during plantar flexion tasks. However, the influence of range of motion (ROM), exercise type (unilateral vs. bilateral), and limb dominance on muscle activity during heel raise exercises (HREs) remains unclear. Methods: Nineteen physically active adults performed unilateral and bilateral HREs under two ankle ROM conditions: neutral (NROM) and full (FROM). Surface electromyography (EMG) was collected from both legs during each condition and normalized to peak values recorded during overground sprinting. Results: MG activity was significantly higher during the FROM than the NROM, in both the dominant leg (F = 11.55, p < 0.01, η2 = 0.47) and the non-dominant leg (F = 6.63, p < 0.05, η2 = 0.31), and was not affected by exercise type. In contrast, LG activity increased significantly during unilateral versus bilateral HREs, especially in the dominant leg during the FROM (F = 17.47, p < 0.01, η2 = 0.52) and in the non-dominant leg (F = 5.44, p < 0.05, η2 = 0.25). Activation ratios (MG:LG) differed significantly between dominant and non-dominant legs only in the unilateral FROM (p = 0.03). MG activation during the unilateral FROM was comparable to sprinting values, highlighting its high neuromuscular demand. Conclusion: The MG and LG respond differently to exercise parameters. The MG is primarily influenced by ROM, whereas the LG is sensitive to both exercise type and limb dominance. These findings emphasize the importance of ROM manipulation and unilateral training to target specific gastrocnemius regions. FROM and unilateral execution optimize gastrocnemius activation, with implications for rehabilitation and performance programs targeting calf musculature. Full article

This study presents a 39-year spatiotemporal analysis of shoreline variability at Topocalma Beach (Chile) using satellite-derived data collected between 1985 and 2024. A total of 350 satellite images were processed with CoastSat and DSAS v6.0 to quantify erosional and accretional trends across distinct beach sectors. The results show persistent erosion in the proximal zone near the Topocalma wetland and localized accretion in the distal (southern) segment. These changes are closely associated with the 2010 Maule earthquake and tsunami, strong ENSO phases, and an increase in storm surge activity since 2015. The spatiotemporal beach width model reveals distinct phases of retreat and short-term post-seismic stabilization, followed by a shift to sustained erosion. Overall, this study underscores the limited natural recovery capacity of the beach and highlights the utility of satellite-based monitoring tools for coastal resilience planning in data-limited regions. The Lidia cattle breed is featured in several traditional popular bullfighting festivals throughout Spain, including the “Toro de Cuerda” event, in which the animals are subjected to intense physical exercise. However, the physiological impact and welfare implications of these activities remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the stress response and muscle damage in Lidia breed bulls during roping bull celebrations through comprehensive blood analysis. Blood samples were collected from 53 adult male Lidia bulls before and after a standardized 45 min continuous running exercise during traditional roping bull events in four Spanish autonomous regions. Hematological parameters, muscle enzymes (creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, lactate), and stress hormones (cortisol and ACTH) were analyzed. Significant increases (p < 0.05) were observed in leukocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, neutrophils, erythrocytes, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and post-exercise platelets. Muscle enzymes showed marked elevations, with creatine kinase increasing up to 10-fold above baseline values. Stress hormones, cortisol and ACTH, also demonstrated significant increases. Despite the magnitude of these changes, all parameters remained within established reference ranges for the bovine species. This study provides the first physiological assessment of Lidia cattle during popular bullfighting celebrations, establishing baseline data for evidence-based welfare evaluation and management protocols. Are We Considering All the Potential Drug–Drug Interactions in Women’s Reproductive Health? A Predictive Model Approach

Background: Drug–drug interactions (DDIs) may occur when two or more drugs are taken together, leading to undesired side effects or potential synergistic effects. Most clinical effects of drug combinations have not been assessed in clinical trials. Therefore, predicting DDIs can provide better patient management, avoid drug combinations that can negatively affect patient care, and exploit potential synergistic combinations to improve current therapies in women’s healthcare. Methods: A DDI prediction model was built to describe relevant drug combinations affecting reproductive treatments. Approved drug features (chemical structure of drugs, side effects, targets, enzymes, carriers and transporters, pathways, protein–protein interactions, and interaction profile fingerprints) were obtained. A unified predictive score revealed unknown DDIs between reproductive and commonly used drugs and their associated clinical effects on reproductive health. The performance of the prediction model was validated using known DDIs. Results: This prediction model accurately predicted known interactions (AUROC = 0.9876) and identified 2991 new DDIs between 192 drugs used in different female reproductive conditions and other drugs used to treat unrelated conditions. These DDIs included 836 between drugs used for in vitro fertilization. Most new DDIs involved estradiol, acetaminophen, bupivacaine, risperidone, and follitropin. Follitropin, bupivacaine, and gonadorelin had the highest discovery rate (42%, 32%, and 25%, respectively). Some were expected to improve current therapies (n = 23), while others would cause harmful effects (n = 11). We also predicted twelve DDIs between oral contraceptives and HIV drugs that could compromise their efficacy. Conclusions: These results show the importance of DDI studies aimed at identifying those that might compromise or improve their efficacy, which could lead to personalizing female reproductive therapies. Background/Objectives: This single-cohort follow-up study describes the median overall survival (OS) in patients with unresectable head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) due to invasion of vital structures, which is under-represented in the current literature. Secondarily, subgroups were evaluated according to the type of presentation, in order to identify clinical characteristics and contribute to developing an appropriate treatment plan and managing patient’s expectations. Methods: This single-cohort observational study analysed the OS of 39 patients from the Otolaryngology Department with advanced-stage head and neck cancer with invasion of vital anatomical structures considered ineligible for surgical treatment. Secondarily, subgroups were evaluated according to type of presentation and various clinical characteristics. Results: A total of 39 patients radiologically classified as having unresectable HNSCC (i.e., unsuitable for surgical resection), with a mean age of 66.87 years, were included during a 24-month follow-up. By the end of the study, 56.4% of the patients had died. The median OS was 16.09 months. Statistically significant differences were observed when comparing human papilloma virus (HPV)-positive and -negative status and when comparing initial and recurrent tumours. Conclusions: The invasion of anatomical structures such as the skull base, internal carotid artery, and prevertebral space was associated with a marked decrease in survival, with an OS time of 16 months. This study provides valuable evidence in patients with unresectable HNSCC, highlighting tumour recurrence and HPV-negative status as important indicators of poor prognosis. Full article

Multiple sclerosis (MS) and allergic diseases, traditionally considered immunologically opposing entities, may share pathogenic mechanisms rooted in immune dysregulation. While MS is predominantly mediated by Th1 and Th17 responses and allergies by Th2 responses, emerging evidence suggests overlapping immunological pathways, including the involvement of histamine, regulatory T cells, and innate lymphoid cells. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the epidemiological and immunopathological associations between MS and allergies. Epidemiological studies have yielded inconsistent results, with some suggesting a protective role for respiratory and food allergies against MS onset, while others find no significant correlation. Clinical studies indicate that food allergies in adults may be associated with increased MS inflammatory activity, whereas childhood atopy might exert a protective effect. In addition, we review hypersensitivity reactions to disease-modifying treatments for MS, detailing their immunological mechanisms, clinical presentation, and management, including desensitization protocols where applicable. Finally, we explore how treatments for allergic diseases—such as clemastine, allergen immunotherapy, montelukast, and omalizumab—may modulate MS pathophysiology, offering potential therapeutic synergies. Understanding the interplay between allergic and autoimmune processes is critical for optimizing care and developing innovative treatment approaches in MS. Full article

The use of eco-organic ingredients as a source of protein in aquaculture diets needs important attention due to the growing demand for organic seafood products. The present study evaluated the effects of fish meal substitution by different organic ingredients on the growth, body composition, retention efficiency, enzyme activity, and nutrient digestibility of white shrimp Penaeus vannamei. The four dietary formulations tested were formulated with organic ingredients and the fish meal was replaced by the following organic protein meals: Iberian pig viscera meal (PIG), trout by-product meal (TRO), insect meal (FLY), and organic vegetable meal (WHT), in addition to a control diet (CON) that included 15% fish meal. A growth trial was carried out for 83 days, raising 1 g shrimp to commercial size (20 g). Shrimp were stocked at 167 shrimp/m3 (15 individuals per 90 L tank). The results showed that the growth obtained by shrimp fed with TRO (19.27 g) and PIG (19.35 g) were similar in weight gain to the control diet (20.76 g), while FLY (16.04 g) and WHT (16.73 g) meals resulted in a significant lower final weight. The FLY diet showed significantly lower protein digestibility (68.89%) compared to the CON, PIG, TRO, and WHT diets, and significantly higher trypsin activity (0.17 mU/g) compared to shrimp fed with the PIG, TRO, and WHT diets. Shrimp fed with WHT have a significantly lower body weight percentage of protein (19.69%) than shrimp fed with the WHT and TRO diets, and some significant differences in dietary aminoacidic levels affecting amino acid body composition. This paper presents a geomechanical characterization for unwelded volcanic bimrock materials. Bimrocks are geological materials consisting of blocks of rock of different sizes embedded in a finer matrix. Many volcanic deposits and outcrops can be classified as bimrocks, and some of them correspond to unwelded bimrocks, i.e., with the absence of strong bonds between blocks of rock and matrix. The geomechanical characterization proposed is oriented towards bimrocks slopes, their stability and landslide hazard occurrence. It consists of five steps which includes the material description, the volcanic deposit classification, the definition of block size range, the computation of the volumetric block percentage, the geotechnical characterization of the blocks of rock, and the geological and geotechnical analysis of the matrix that surrounds the blocks. The geomechanical characterization proposed is applied to four slopes at the Western Cordillera of Ecuador, where slopes instabilities are common. Results show that the geomechanical characterization sets a reliable framework for geotechnically describing bimrocks materials, explaining the actual stability state of the slopes. It also enables taking appropriate and optimum decisions in the design and management of volcanic slopes, thus contributing to a sustainable approach of landslide mitigation. Full article

Television formats are undergoing a redefinition of the audiovisual panorama marked by digitisation and the decrease in audiences. In this context, news coverage at times of special interest is an opportunity to regain relevance, and for this reason the morning magazine programmes are taking on the broadcasting of currently prevalent news, intervening in subjects traditionally reserved for news programmes. This paper analyses the news content of TV magazines in a context of hybridisation of genres that has blurred the acknowledged boundaries between the definitions of television programmes. To achieve this, we study the topics on the agenda and how the news is dealt with that is included in the two leading formats among the private and public channels with the biggest audiences in Spain: Espejo Público on Antena 3 and Mañaneros on Televisión Española. The results show that there is a process we call “news osmosis”, whereby the news is treated in a spectacular way, yet incorporating the language and aesthetics typical of the formality of news programmes. In this adaptation, the magazines impose themselves on the narration of the news scoop while restricting the thematic agenda, leaning towards a kind of reductionism in which the private channels choose to prioritise political conflict while the public channels concentrate on current incidents, understood here as newsworthy events of public interest (crimes or accidents). Functional and Neuroplastic Effects of Cross-Education in Anterior Cruciate Ligament Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review with Bibliometric Analysis

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) results in prolonged muscle weakness, impaired neuromuscular control, and delayed return to sport. Cross-education (CE), unilateral training of the uninjured limb, has been proposed as an adjunct therapy to promote bilateral adaptations. This scoping review evaluated the functional and neuroplastic effects of CE rehabilitation post-ACLR. Following PRISMA-ScR and JBI guidelines, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PEDro were searched up to February 2025. A bibliometric analysis was also conducted to report keyword co-occurrence and identify trends in this line of research. Of 333 screened references, 14 studies (price index: 43% and low-to-moderate risk of bias) involving 721 participants (aged 17–45 years) met inclusion criteria. CE protocols (6–12 weeks; 2–5 sessions/week) incorporating isometric, concentric, and eccentric exercises demonstrated strength gains (10–31%) and strength preservation, alongside improved limb symmetry (5–14%) and dynamic balance (7–18%). There is growing interest in neuroplasticity and corticospinal excitability, although neuroplastic changes were assessed heterogeneously across studies. Findings support CE as a feasible and low-cost strategy to complement early-stage ACLR rehabilitation, especially when direct loading of the affected limb is limited. Standardized protocols for clinical intervention and neurophysiological assessment are needed. Full article

Automated Quality Control of Candle Jars via Anomaly Detection Using OCSVM and CNN-Based Feature Extraction

Automated quality control plays a critical role in modern industries, particularly in environments that handle large volumes of packaged products requiring fast, accurate, and consistent inspections. This work presents an anomaly detection system for candle jars commonly used in industrial and commercial applications, where obtaining labeled defective samples is challenging. Two anomaly detection strategies are explored: (1) a baseline model using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) as an end-to-end classifier and (2) a hybrid approach where features extracted by CNNs are fed into One-Class classification (OCC) algorithms, including One-Class SVM (OCSVM), One-Class Isolation Forest (OCIF), One-Class Local Outlier Factor (OCLOF), One-Class Elliptic Envelope (OCEE), One-Class Autoencoder (OCAutoencoder), and Support Vector Data Description (SVDD). Both strategies are trained primarily on non-defective samples, with only a limited number of anomalous examples used for evaluation. Experimental results show that both the pure CNN model and the hybrid methods achieve excellent classification performance. The end-to-end CNN reached 100% accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC. The best-performing hybrid model CNN-based feature extraction followed by OCIF also achieved 100% across all evaluation metrics, confirming the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach. Other OCC algorithms consistently delivered strong results, with all metrics above 95%, indicating solid generalization from predominantly normal data. This approach demonstrates strong potential for quality inspection tasks in scenarios with scarce defective data. Its ability to generalize effectively from mostly normal samples makes it a practical and valuable solution for real-world industrial inspection systems. Future work will focus on optimizing real-time inference and exploring advanced feature extraction techniques to further enhance detection performance. Full article
