The historical use of toxic chemicals to cause intentional harm has evolved from blister agents in World War I to highly lethal organophosphates and emerging families of chemicals, such as Novichok. In turn, medical or recreational substances like fentanyl, lysergamides, and phencyclidine pose a growing risk of hostile use, particularly related to the rapid proliferation of new psychoactive substances (NPSs). A narrative literature review was conducted covering specialized databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciELO, Google Scholar) and sources from international organizations (OPCW, UNODC, ONU), analyzing historical and recent cases of the use of nerve agents in conflicts and the use of NPSs for hostile purposes. The main families of conventional agents (G, V, A series, and Novichok) and NPSs (lysergamides, PCP, fentanyl derivatives) were identified, highlighting their ease of synthesis, high toxicity profiles, and the regulatory gaps that facilitate their illicit production. In this scenario, it is essential to strengthen regulatory frameworks, surveillance systems, and ethical protocols in chemical research, as well as to promote international cooperation to prevent these substances from becoming chemical threats. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are widely used in power-conversion applications, including distributed energy storage integration, because of their scalability, high efficiency, and reduced harmonic distortion. Integrating battery storage systems into MMC submodules using dual active bridge (DAB) converters provides electrical isolation and reduces voltage stress, harmonics, and common-mode issues. However, voltage fluctuations due to the battery state of charge can compromise the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation of a DAB and increase the reactive power circulation, leading to higher losses and reduced system performance. To address these challenges, this study investigated an active control strategy for submodule voltage regulation in an MMC with DAB-based battery integration. Assuming single-phase-shift modulation, two control strategies were evaluated. The first strategy regulated the DAB voltage on one side to match the battery voltage on the other, scaled by the high-frequency transformer turns ratio, which facilitated the ZVS operation and reduced the reactive power. The second strategy optimized this voltage to minimize the total power-conversion losses. The proposed control strategies improved the efficiency, particularly at low power levels, achieving several percentage points of improvement compared to maintaining a constant voltage. Full article

After the 2011 earthquake, lake water depletion has become a widespread issue in Sikkim, especially in regions classified as high to very high seismic zones, where many lakes have turned into seasonal water bodies. This study investigates Chochen Lake in the Barapathing area of Sikkim’s Pakyong district, which is facing severe water seepage and instability. The problem, intensified by the 2011 seismic event and ongoing local construction, is examined through subsurface fracture mapping using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and profiling techniques. A statistical factor method, applied to interpret VES data, helped identify fracture patterns beneath the lake. Results from two sites (VES-1 and VES-2) reveal significant variations in weathered and semi-weathered soil layers, indicating fractures at depths of 17–50 m (VES-1) and 20–55 m (VES-2). Higher fracture density near VES-1 suggests increased settlement risk and ground displacement compared to VES-2. Contrasting resistivity values emphasize the greater instability in this zone and the need for cautious construction practices. The findings highlight the role of seismic-induced fractures in ongoing water depletion and underscore the importance of continuous dewatering to stabilize the swampy terrain. Full article

In this study, a novel direct laser beam turning (DLBT) approach is proposed for the precision machining of AISI 308L austenitic stainless steel, which eliminates the need for cutting tools and thereby eradicates tool wear and vibration-induced surface irregularities. A nanosecond-pulsed Nd:YAG fiber laser (λ = 1064 nm, spot size = 0.05 mm) was used, and Ø1.6 mm × 20 mm cylindrical rods were processed under ambient conditions without auxiliary cooling. The experimental framework systematically evaluated the influence of scanning speed, pulse frequency, and the number of laser passes on dimensional accuracy and material removal efficiency. The results indicate that a maximum diameter reduction of 0.271 mm was achieved at a scanning speed of 3200 mm/s and 50 kHz, whereas 0.195 mm was attained at 6400 mm/s and 200 kHz. A robust second-order polynomial correlation (R2 = 0.99) was established between diameter reduction and the number of passes, revealing the high predictability of the process. Crucially, when the scanning speed was doubled, the effective fluence was halved, considerably influencing the ablation characteristics. Despite the low fluence, evidence of material evaporation at elevated frequencies due to the incubation effect underscores the complex photothermal dynamics governing the process. This work constitutes the first comprehensive quantification of pass-dependent diameter modulation in DLBT and introduces a transformative, noncontact micromachining strategy for hard-to-machine alloys. The demonstrated precision, repeatability, and thermal control position DLBT as a promising candidate for next-generation manufacturing of high-performance miniaturized components. Full article

The thermo-chemical treatment of dental implants leads to the formation of sodium titanate crystals on their surface. When in contact with blood, these crystals dissolve and trigger an ionic exchange cascade, resulting in the formation of a calcium apatite layer. This study, carried out both in vitro and in an animal model, aimed to determine whether the cooling rate of the treatment affects the size of the deposited crystals, and whether this in turn influences wettability and early bone-to-implant contact (BIC). A total of 50 dental implants and 50 titanium discs were treated using four different cooling rates, along with a control group. Crystal size was analyzed on implant surfaces using scanning electron microscopy, and wettability was assessed on titanium discs using a goniometer. Finally, the implants were placed in the tibiae of 13 rabbits, and histological analysis was performed after three weeks to compare BIC among groups. Results suggest that a cooling rate of 75 °C/h produces smaller sodium titanate crystals, which are associated with significantly improved surface wettability and a higher percentage of bone-to-implant contact after 3 weeks of healing (p < 0.05). Recent research on the design and synthesis of new and upgraded materials for secondary batteries is growing to fulfill future energy demands around the globe. Herein, by using DFT calculations, the thermodynamic and electrochemical properties of Na/Na+@C12 complexes and then halogens (X = Br, Cl, and F) as counter anions are studied for the enhancement of Na-ion battery cell voltage and overall performance. Isolated C12 nanorings showed a lower cell voltage (−1.32 V), which was significantly increased after adsorption with halide anions as counter anions. Adsorption of halides increased the Gibbs free energy, which in turn resulted in higher cell voltage. Cell voltage increased with the increasing electronegativity of the halide anion. The Gibbs free energy of Br@C12 was −52.36 kcal·mol1, corresponding to a desirable cell voltage of 2.27 V, making it suitable for use as an anode in sodium-ion batteries. The estimated cell voltage of these considered complexes ensures the effective use of these complexes in sodium-ion secondary batteries. Full article

Given the severe global traffic safety challenges—including threats to human lives and socioeconomic impacts—this study analyzes visual behavior to promote sustainable transportation, improve road safety, and reduce resource waste and pollution caused by accidents. Four typical road sections, namely, turning, straight ahead, uphill, and downhill, were selected, and the eye movement data of 23 drivers in different driving stages were collected by aSee Glasses eye-tracking device to analyze the visual gaze characteristics of the drivers and their transfer patterns in each road section. Using Markov chain theory, the probability of staying at each gaze point and the transfer probability distribution between gaze points were investigated. The results of the study showed that drivers’ visual behaviors in different road sections showed significant differences: drivers in the turning section had the largest percentage of fixation on the near front, with a fixation duration and frequency of 29.99% and 28.80%, respectively; the straight ahead section, on the other hand, mainly focused on the right side of the road, with 31.57% of fixation duration and 19.45% of frequency of fixation; on the uphill section, drivers’ fixation duration on the left and right roads was more balanced, with 24.36% of fixation duration on the left side of the road and 25.51% on the right side of the road; drivers on the downhill section looked more frequently at the distance ahead, with a total fixation frequency of 23.20%, while paying higher attention to the right side of the road environment, with a fixation duration of 27.09%. In terms of visual fixation, the fixation shift in the turning road section was mainly concentrated between the near and distant parts of the road ahead and frequently turned to the left and right sides; the straight road section mainly showed a shift between the distant parts of the road ahead and the dashboard; the uphill road section was concentrated on the shift between the near parts of the road ahead and the two sides of the road, while the downhill road section mainly occurred between the distant parts of the road ahead and the rearview mirror. Although drivers’ fixations on the front of the road were most concentrated under the four road sections, with an overall fixation stability probability exceeding 67%, there were significant differences in fixation smoothness between different road sections. Through this study, this paper not only reveals the laws of drivers’ visual behavior under different driving environments but also provides theoretical support for behavior-based traffic safety improvement strategies. According to the literature, the advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) has increased individual exposure to scams, turning fraud victimization into a significant concern. While prior research has primarily focused on socio-demographic predictors of fraud victimization, this study adopts a behavioral perspective that is grounded in the Signal Detection Theory (SDT) to investigate the likelihood determinants of individuals becoming fraud victims. Using survey data of 671 Indonesian respondents analyzed with the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), we explored the roles of vigilance and financial literacy in moderating the relationship between fraud exposure and victimization. Our findings substantiate the notion that higher exposure to fraudulent activity significantly increases the likelihood of victimization. The results also show that vigilance negatively moderates the relationship between fraud exposure and fraud victimization, suggesting that individuals with higher vigilance are better at identifying scams, thereby decreasing their likelihood of becoming fraud victims. Furthermore, financial literacy is positively related to vigilance, indicating that financially literate individuals are more aware of potential scams. However, the predictive power of financial literacy on vigilance is relatively low. Hence, while literacy helps a person sharpen their indicators for detecting fraud, psychological, behavioral, and contextual factors may also affect their vigilance and decision-making. Full article

Industry 4.0 represents a significant transformation in industrial systems through digital integration, presenting both opportunities and challenges for aligning the workforce, especially in emerging economies like Thailand. This study adopts a sequential exploratory mixed-method approach to investigate how strategic human resource development (HRD) contributes to sustainable transformation, defined as the enduring alignment between workforce capabilities and technological advancement. The qualitative phase involved case studies of five Thai manufacturing firms at varying levels of Industry 4.0 adoption, utilizing semi-structured interviews with executives and HR leaders. Thematic findings informed the development of a structured survey, distributed to 144 firms. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS SEM) was used to test the hypothesized relationships among business pressures, leadership support, HRD preparedness, and technological readiness. The analysis reveals that business pressures significantly influence leadership and HRD, which in turn facilitate technological readiness. However, business pressures alone do not directly enhance readiness without the support of intermediaries. These results underscore the critical role of integrated HRD and leadership frameworks in enabling sustainable digital transformation. This study contributes to theoretical perspectives by integrating HRD, leadership, and technological readiness, offering practical guidance for firms aiming to navigate the complexities of Industry 4.0. Introduction: The main purpose of this study was to test a hierarchical model of motivation that integrates Achievement Goal Theory and Self-Determination Theory to explain and predict exercise adherence. Method: In total, 2180 exercisers (1020 female, 1160 male) aged between 18 and 60 years, from different gyms and health clubs, completed several scales validated in exercise settings, regarding perceived motivational climate, basic psychological need satisfaction, behavioral regulation, and exercise adherence. For the last measure, weekly computer access to a control system over a 6-month period before and after data collection was consulted. Results: Through structural equation models (SEM), it was verified that (1) task-involving climate positively predicted basic psychological needs. In turn, the satisfaction of these needs predicted autonomous motivation, which led to a positive prediction of adherence; (2) a small variation in exercise adherence was explained by the motivational model under analysis. Nevertheless, models significantly improved their analytical power when past adherence was inserted in the model increasing the explained variance in future behavior from 9.2% to 64%. Conclusions: In conclusion, autonomous motivation can predict people’s exercise adherence, and past behavior increases that predictive effect. The present study brings scientific evidence to the popular saying “tell me what you’ve done and, and I’ll predict what you’ll do”. Full article

This study evaluates the impact of digital systems and IT audit frameworks on tax performance and integrity within tax administrations. Using international data from organizations like the World Bank, OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), and IMF (International Monetary Fund), the research examines the relationship between tax revenue as a percentage of GDP, digital infrastructure, corruption perception, e-government development, and cybersecurity readiness. Quantitative analysis, including correlation, regression, and clustering methods, reveals a strong positive relationship between digital maturity, e-governance, and tax performance. Countries with advanced digital governance systems and robust IT audit frameworks, such as COBIT, tend to show higher tax revenues and lower corruption levels. The study finds that e-government development and anti-corruption measures explain over 40% of the variance in tax performance. Cluster analysis distinguishes between digitally advanced, high-compliance countries and those lagging in IT adoption. The findings suggest that digital transformation strengthens fiscal integrity by automating compliance and reducing human contact, which in turn mitigates bribery risks and enhances fraud detection. The study highlights the need for adopting international best practices to guide the digitalization of tax administrations, improving efficiency, transparency, and trust in public finance. Postharvest losses amongst small-scale farmers in developing countries are high due to inadequate resources and infrastructure. Among the various affected crops, tomatoes are particularly vulnerable; however, studies on postharvest losses of most fruits and vegetables are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess postharvest tomato losses under different production systems within the small-scale supply chain using the indirect assessment (questionnaires and interviews) and direct quantification of losses. Farmers reported tomato losses due to insects (82.35%), cracks, bruises, and deformities (70.58%), and diseases (64.71%). Chemical sprays were the main form of pest and disease control reported by all farmers. The direct quantification sampling data revealed that 73.07% of the tomatoes were substandard at the farm level, with 47.92% and 25.15% categorized as medium-quality and poor-quality, respectively. The primary contributors to the losses were decay (39.92%), mechanical damage (31.32%), and blotchiness (27.99%). Postharvest losses were significantly higher under open-field production systems compared to closed tunnels. The fungi associated with decay were mainly Geotrichum, Fusarium spp., and Alternaria spp. These findings demonstrate the main drivers behind postharvest losses, which in turn highlight the critical need for intervention through training and support, including the use of postharvest loss reduction technologies to enhance food security. Background: Obese women have a significantly higher risk of bearing breast tumors that are resistant to therapies and are associated with poorer prognoses/treatment outcomes. Breast cancer-promoting action of obesity is often attributed to elevated levels of insulin, glucose, inflammatory mediators, and misbalanced estrogen production in adipose tissue under obese conditions. Metabolic endotoxemia, characterized by chronic presence of extremely low levels of bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide [LPS]) in the circulation, is a less explored obesity-associated factor. Results: Here, utilizing in vitro and in vivo models of breast carcinoma (BC), we report that subclinical levels of LPS typical for metabolic endotoxemia enhance the malignant phenotype of breast cancer cells and accelerate breast tumor progression. Conclusions: Our study, while focusing primarily on the direct effects of metabolic endotoxemia on breast tumor progression, also suggests that metabolic endotoxemia can contribute to obesity–breast cancer link. Thus, our findings add novel mechanistic insights into how obesity-associated metabolic changes, particularly metabolic endotoxemia, modulate the biological and clinical behavior of breast carcinoma. In turn, understanding of the mechanistic aspects underlying the association between obesity and breast cancer could help inform better strategies to reduce BC risk in an increasingly obese population and to suppress the breast cancer-promoting consequences of excess adiposity. Disastrous Effects of Hurricane Helene in the Southern Appalachian Mountains Including a Review of Mechanisms Producing Extreme Rainfall

Hurricane Helene made landfall near Perry (Latitude 30.1 N) in the Big Bend area of Florida with a central pressure of 939 hPa. It moved northwards creating devastating damage and loss of life; however, the greatest damage and number of fatalities occurred well to the north around the City of Ashville (Latitude 35.6 N) where extreme rainfall fell and some of the strongest wind gusts were reported. This paper describes the change in the hurricane’s structure as it tracked northwards, how it gathered tropical moisture from the Atlantic and a turning wind profile between the 850 hPa and 500 hPa elevations, which led to such extreme rainfall. This turning wind profile is shown to be associated with extreme rainfall and loss of life from drowning and landslides around the globe. The area around Ashville suffered 157 fatalities, which is a considerable proportion of the 250 fatalities so far recorded in the whole United Stares from Helene. This is of extreme concern and should be investigated in detail as the public expect the greatest impact from hurricanes to be confined to coastal areas near the landfall site. It is another example of increased death tolls from tropical cyclones moving inland and generating heavy rainfall. As the global population increases and inland centres become more urbanised, run off from such rainfall events increases, which causes greater devastation. Full article

A Voronoi–A* Fusion Algorithm with Adaptive Layering for Efficient UAV Path Planning in Complex Terrain

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) face significant challenges in global path planning within complex terrains, as traditional algorithms (e.g., A*, PSO, APF) struggle to balance computational efficiency, path optimality, and safety. This study proposes a Voronoi–A* fusion algorithm, combining Voronoi-vertex-based rapid trajectory generation with A* supplementary expansion for enhanced performance. First, an adaptive DEM layering strategy divides the terrain into horizontal planes based on obstacle density, reducing computational complexity while preserving 3D flexibility. The Voronoi vertices within each layer serve as a sparse waypoint network, with greedy heuristic prioritizing vertices that ensure safety margins, directional coherence, and goal proximity. For unresolved segments, A* performs localized searches to ensure complete connectivity. Finally, a line-segment interpolation search further optimizes the path to minimize both length and turning maneuvers. Simulations in mountainous environments demonstrate superior performance over traditional methods in terms of path planning success rates, path optimality, and computation. Our framework excels in real-time scenarios, such as disaster rescue and logistics, although it assumes static environments and trades slight path elongation for robustness. Future research should integrate dynamic obstacle avoidance and weather impact analysis to enhance adaptability in real-world conditions. Full article
