Infrared-selective stealth films, which concurrently offer high visible transmittance, suppressed infrared emission, and selective thermal dissipation, have emerged as compelling candidates for infrared protection and thermal-target stealth. However, traditional multilayer architectures are predominantly designed through empirical trial-and-error protocols, which inherently hinder the synergistic optimisation of multiband spectral performance and yield suboptimal parameter-tuning efficiency. To circumvent this bottleneck, we introduce a reinforcement learning (RL)-driven multi-objective optimisation framework that automates the design of composite thin-film configurations. The optimised multilayer film structure consists of TiO2/ITO/Ag/ZnO/SiO2, with layer thicknesses of 180, 656, 10, 33.75 and 50 nm, respectively. Spectral characterisation reveals a weighted average visible transmittance of 79.77% over the 0.38–0.78 μm range, alongside blackbody-weighted average emissivities of 33.93%, 72.93%, and 19.94% in the 3–5, 5–8, and 8–14 μm bands, respectively. Consequently, the spectral profile exhibits high visible transparency, deep suppression of emissivity within the atmospheric windows (3–5 and 8–14 μm), and markedly elevated emissivity in the non-atmospheric band (5–8 μm). Analysis of the electromagnetic field distribution and power-loss density along the thickness direction reveals that the energy transmission and dissipation behaviours across distinct bands are synergistically governed by multilayer interference, interfacial multiple reflections, and lossy interlayer coupling mechanisms. Furthermore, angle-resolved infrared-emissivity analysis calibrated against the normal-incidence FDTD spectrum confirms that the structure retains robust polarisation adaptability and pronounced spectral selectivity at incidence angles up to 80°. The above results demonstrate the effectiveness of the reinforcement learning-driven optimisation framework for the automated co-design of multiband spectral responses. Moreover, the uncovered multilayer interference and loss-coupling mechanisms furnish a solid physical foundation for further performance refinement and rational design of transparent stealth coatings. Spray pyrolysis is a popular method for the low-cost synthesis of oxides and other compounds in thin-film form. Here, we discuss several nuances of using this method for ternary and quaternary compounds. Specifically, we outline how precursor solubility and thermal decomposition, as well as desorption of intermediate species from the sample surface govern the spray pyrolysis growth process. We demonstrate how the stoichiometry transfer from solution to film can be affected in selected test cases. We present real-time optical growth measurements of the behaviour of individual Cu, Cr, Zn, and Sn precursors, as well as post-growth analysis of film composition by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for ternary transparent conducting oxides (TCOs; p-type: CuxCrO2, SnTiOx; and n-type: a-ZnSnO3). We illustrate how several steps of spray pyrolysis affect the stoichiometry transfer from the solution to the ternary thin film. Using binary Cu2O as a test case, we also show how the choice of instrument geometry and nozzle type can affect film homogeneity. All materials discussed have been chosen to highlight potential difficulties of the spray pyrolysis process of ternary, quaternary, or even more complex oxides, and the mechanisms should be considered for other materials as well. We therefore also provide an extensive overview of suitable precursor salts with similar expected properties as used in this experimental work to guide future ternary oxide studies. Full article

Next-generation wastewater treatment and recycling rely on membrane-based processes, but they face a trade-off among permeability, selectivity, and fouling resistance. In the present study, thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were fabricated by incorporating a ternary TiO2-SiO2-biochar nanofiller into a polysulfone (PSf) support using nonsolvent-induced phase separation, after which m-phenylenediamine and trimesoyl chloride were used via interfacial polymerization to produce a selective polyamide layer. The membrane compositions were M1 (22 wt.% PSf), M2 (22 wt.% PSf/0.5 wt.% TiO2/0.5 wt.% SiO2/0.5 wt.% biochar), and M3 (polyamide-coated M2). FTIR, XRD, SEM, contact-angle, porosity, and mechanical analyses supported successful membrane formation and changes in morphology, wettability, and structural strength after nanofiller incorporation and TFC coating. The addition of a nanofiller increased the hydrophilicity of the membranes by decreasing the water contact angle from 98.6 ± 0.8° for pristine PSf to 35.6 ± 1.5° for the nanocomposite membrane. Consequently, the pure-water permeability increased from 21 to 37 L m−2 h−1 bar−1. After polyamide layer formation, the optimized TFN membrane maintained a contact angle of 55.4 ± 3.8° and achieved a high Congo red rejection of 98% with permeate flux of 7–9 L m−2 h−1 bar−1. The membrane also showed good antifouling performance, with flux recovery ratios exceeding 90%. For heavy-metal-containing solutions, the optimized membrane showed apparent removal efficiencies of 78–98% for multivalent heavy metals (Pb2+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, As3+, and Cr6+). Static adsorption tests showed the order M2 > M3 > M1, confirming that exposed TiO2-SiO2-biochar sites contribute to pollutant uptake, while the superior filtration performance of M3 is attributed to the combined effect of the polyamide selective layer and adsorption-assisted interactions. Overall, the TiO2-SiO2-biochar-based TFN membrane provides a promising platform for dye removal and preliminary heavy-metal attenuation from contaminated water. Full article

In this work, the results of ellipsometric studies of bilayer films of broadband oxides (Al2O3:ZnO, Al2O3:TiO2) are presented. Thin layers of Al2O3,ZnO and TiO2 were deposited on silicon substrate using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. The desired ranges of antireflective properties were selected, and then, based on optical modeling, the appropriate thicknesses of individual layers were determined. Optical constants were determined based on ellipsometric measurements in the spectral range of 193–1690 nm. For several selected samples, this range has been extended to 470–6500 cm−1. B-spline function, Tauc–Lorentz, Cody–Lorentz and Psemi-M0 oscillator models were used to describe the optical properties of the investigated films. Reflectance spectra for layers on a silicon substrate were determined in the range from 200 to 2500 nm. Additionally, complementary studies, SEM and EDS analyses, were also performed. The EDS investigations enabled the determination of the composition of the bilayer films. Spectrophotometric analysis demonstrated consistency between the obtained experimental data and theoretical predictions, confirming the validity of the applied model. The studies showed significant improvement in antireflective properties depending on the thickness of the prepared layers while maintaining an extinction coefficient close to zero, across much of the investigated spectral range, regardless of the layer thickness. In recent years, antibacterial coatings have become an important approach in the global fight against bacterial pathogens. Developments in materials science, chemistry, and biochemistry have led to a plethora of materials and chemical compounds that have the potential to create antibacterial coatings. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the analysis of the techniques and technologies used to apply these coatings. Among the various inorganic coating techniques, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is worthy of note. It enables the successful synthesis of high-purity inorganic nanocoatings on surfaces of complex shape and topography, while also providing precise control over their thickness and composition. ALD has various industrial applications, but its practical application in medicine is still limited. In recent years, a considerable number of papers have been published on the proposed use of thin films and coatings produced via ALD in medicine, notably those with antibacterial properties. The aim of this paper is to carefully evaluate and analyze the relevant literature on this topic. Simple oxide coatings, including TiO2, ZnO, Fe2O3, MgO, and ZrO2, were examined, as well as coatings containing metal nanoparticles such as Ag, Cu, Pt, and Au, and mixed systems such as TiO2-ZnO, TiO2-ZrO2, ZnO-Al2O3, TiO2-Ag, and ZnO-Ag. Through comparative analysis, we have been able to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of various antibacterial coatings of different compositions, including key characteristics such as thickness, morphology, and crystal structure. The use of ALD in the development of antibacterial coatings for various applications was analyzed. Furthermore, assumptions were made about the most promising areas of development. The final section provides a comparison of different coatings, as well as the advantages, disadvantages, and prospects of using ALD for the industrial production of antibacterial coatings. In this work, the results of ellipsometric studies of thin films of broadband oxides (ZnO, TiO2, ZrO2) and broadband oxides doped with Al2O3 (Al2O3–ZnO, Al2O3–TiO2, Al2O3–ZrO2) are presented. All layers have been produced using the atomic layer deposition method. Ellipsometric studies were performed in the wavelength range of 193–1690 nm. Sellmeier and Cauchy models were used to describe the optical properties of the tested layers. Dispersion dependencies of refractive indices were determined for thin layers of broadband oxides on silicon substrates, and then for layers of Al2O3 admixture. The EDX investigations enabled estimation of the composition of the alloys. The Bruggeman effective medium approximation (EMA) model was used to determine the theoretical dependencies of the dispersion refractive indices of the studied alloys. The refractive index values determined using the Bruggeman EMA model are in good agreement with the values determined from the ellipsometric measurements. The doping of thin layers of ZnO, ZrO2 and TiO2 with Al2O3 enables the creation of anti-reflective layers and filters with a specific refractive index. Full article

In this work, we present the fabrication of thin films/nanostructures of metals and metal oxides using picosecond laser ablation. Two sets of experiments were performed: the depositions were carried out in vacuum and in air at atmospheric pressure. The subjects of investigation were the noble metals Au and Pt and the metal oxides ZnO and TiO2. We studied and compared the phase composition, microstructure, morphology, and physicochemical state of the as-deposited samples’ surfaces in vacuum and in air. It was found that picosecond laser ablation performed in vacuum led to the fabrication of thin films with embedded and differently sized nanoparticles. The implementation of the same process in air at atmospheric pressure resulted in the fabrication of porous nanostructures composed of nanoparticles. The ablation of pure Pt metal in air led to the production of nanoparticles with an oxide shell. In addition, more defects were formed on the metal oxide surface when the samples were deposited in vacuum. Furthermore, the laser ablation process of pure Au metal in a picosecond regime in vacuum and in air was theoretically investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. Full article

Sol compositions for transparent TiO2 and ZnO photocatalytic thin film deposition are of interest for the wet-chemical fabrication of self-cleaning coatings. The choice of stabilizing agent is crucial for the sol film-forming properties, with acetylacetone and monoethanolamine conventionally employed for TiO2 and ZnO deposition sols, respectively. Salicylic acid (SA), capable of chelating both Ti(IV) and Zn(II) precursors, remains underexplored. This study presents novel SA-based sol formulations for the deposition of both TiO2 and ZnO films, based on titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) and zinc acetate dihydrate (ZAD) precursors, in a fixed 1:3 (TTIP:SA) and 1:2 (ZAD:SA) ratio, and isopropanol solvent, varied across the 1:10 to 1:20 precursor-to-solvent ratio range. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis and Density Functional Theory computations confirmed the formation of H2Ti[SA]3 and Zn[SA]2·2H2O complexes. Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy were employed to study the structural and optical properties of the dip-coated films, revealing dense TiO2 (86–205 nm) and ZnO (35–90 nm) layers of thickness proportional to the salicylate concentration and transmittance in the 70–90% range. Liquid-phase Methylene blue (MB) photooxidation experiments revealed that all films exhibit photocatalytic activity, with ZnO films being superior to TiO2, with 2.288 vs. 0.366 nm h−1 cm−2 MB removal rates. The aim of this project is to investigate the photocatalytic activity of ZnO/TiO2 composite films for the gas-phase oxidation of ethanol. Pure TiO2, pure ZnO, and their composites were formulated using a sol-gel synthesis method, and the resulting powders were cast and dried as thin films in a flat-plate ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV LED) reactor. P25 TiO2 and commercially available ZnO were also used for comparison. The structural, morphological, and optical characteristics of the materials were characterized. The photocatalytic oxidation of ethanol vapors in air after 24 h of reactor operation was used to assess the relative photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/TiO2 composite films. Our results show that as ZnO content increased in the coupled semiconductor materials, the apparent photocatalytic activity decreased. In this study, pure ZnO (both sol-gel and purchased) had the least photocatalytic activity for vapor-phase ethanol oxidation in our test apparatus. For gas-phase photocatalysis, surface area was shown to be a critical feature for photocatalytic activity. However, the inherent photocatalytic activity of the materials was not decoupled from the effects of surface area in this study. Full article

The problem of copper diffusion in semiconductor devices has been known for several decades as copper has been used as an interconnecting (bonding) metal and has been intensively studied due to its high diffusion coefficient. The influence of the intensive diffusion of copper, depending on the technology of the deposition regimes, has been investigated in thin-film solar cells based on copper, zinc, and titanium oxides obtained by DC-reactive magnetron sputtering. The observed effect significantly changes the structure of the CuO films and affects the properties of the TiO2:ZnO/CuO photocell. The composition of the layers and the copper diffusion in the photocells were studied using a cross-section obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of the copper diffusion in the layers on the current–voltage (I-V) and power–voltage (P-V) characteristics and optical properties was investigated. The photoelectric behavior of two structures of thin-film solar cells was confirmed through -V research. The values of the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current density (JSC) of photovoltaic devices reached (11 ÷ 15) mV and (6.1 ÷ 6.8) μA, respectively. Furthermore, the Pmax, FF, RS, and RSH values were calculated and analyzed. The difference in the composition of the upper layer of the structure caused changes in the reflection spectra in the wavelength range of 190–2500 nm and, depending on the wavelength, varies in the range of 0–27%. Ti-doped ZnO (TZO) and Bi2O3 thin films were designed and deposited by magnetron sputtering successively on ITO glass substrate to form a Ti-doped ZnO/Bi2O3 (TZO/Bi2O3) heterojunction. Microstructure and photoelectric properties of TZO, Bi2O3, and TZO/Bi2O3 films were tested and characterized. The results showed that TZO film with a hexagonal wurtzite structure was preferentially grown along the crystal plane (002), had a good crystallization state, and was an N-type semiconductor film with high transmittance (90%) and low resistivity (4.68 × 10−3 Ω·cm). However, the Bi2O3 film sputtered in an oxygen-containing atmosphere and was a polycrystalline film that was preferentially grown along the crystal plane (111). It had a lower crystallization quality than TZO film and was a P-type semiconductor film with low transmittance (68%) and high resistance (1.71 × 102 Ω·cm). The I–V curve of TZO/Bi2O3 composite films showed that it had an obvious heterojunction rectification effect, which indicates that the PN heterojunction successfully formed in TZO/Bi2O3 films. This study aimed to present the differences in the corrosion properties and protective ability of two bi-layer systems obtained on low-carbon steel in a model corrosive medium of 5% NaCl solution. These newly developed systems consist of Zn-Co (3 wt.%) or Zn-Ni (10 wt.%) alloy coatings as under-layers and a very thin TiO2 sol-gel film as a top-layer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is used for characterization of the surface morphology of the samples indicating that some quantitative differences appear as a result of the different composition of both zinc alloys. Surface topography is investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the hydrophobic properties are studied by contact angle (CA) measurements. These investigations demonstrate that both sample types possess grain nanometric surface morphology and that the contact angle decreases very slightly. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used for characterization of the chemical composition and electronic structure of the samples. The roughness Rq of the Zn-Ni/TiO2 is 49.5 nm, while for Zn-Co/TiO2, the Rq value is 53.4 nm. The water contact angels are 93.2 and 95.5 for the Zn-Ni/TiO2 and Zn-Co/TiO2 systems, respectively. These investigations also show that the co-deposition of Zn and Ni forms a coating consisting entirely of Ni2Zn11, while the other alloy contains Zn, Co and the intermetallic compound CoZn13. The corrosion resistance and protective ability are estimated by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, as well as polarization resistance (Rp) measurements for a prolonged test period (35 days). The results obtained are compared with the corrosion characteristics of ordinary zinc coating with an equal thickness. The experimental data presents the positive influence of the newly developed systems on the enhanced protective properties of low-carbon steel in a test environment causing a localized corrosion—lower corrosion current density of about one magnitude of order (~10−6 A.cm−2 for both systems and ~10−5 A.cm−2 for Zn) and an enhanced protective ability after 35 days (~10,000–17,000 ohms for the systems and ~900 ohms for Zn). In this paper, porous zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheets were successfully prepared by a simple low-temperature hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) tests showed that the synthesized product was ZnO with porous sheet structure. The diameter of porous nanosheets was about 100 nm and the thickness was about 8 nm. As a photocatalyst, the degradation efficiencies of porous ZnO nanosheets for methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) were 97.5%, 99% and 96.8%, respectively. In addition, the degradation efficiency of ZnO for mixed dyes (Mo, MB and RhB) was satisfactory, reaching 97.7%. The photocatalytic stability of MB was further tested and remained at 99% after 20 cycles. In the experiment, ZnO/FTO (fluorine-doped tin oxide) composites were prepared by using ZnO as the conductive layer. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) was deposited on the surface of ZnO/FTO by electrodeposition, so as to obtain a TiO2/ZnO/FTO composite. By studying the electrochromic properties of this composite, it was found that the TiO2/ZnO/FTO composite shows a large light modulation range (55% at 1000 nm) and excellent cycle stability (96.6% at 200 cycles). The main reason for the excellent electrochromic properties may be the synergistic effect between the porous structure and the polymetallic oxides. This study is helpful to improve the photocatalytic efficiency and cycling stability of metal oxides, improve the transmittance of thin films and provide a new strategy for the preparation of ZnO composite materials with excellent photocatalytic and electrochromic properties. The role of thermal treatments, as well as sputtering gas composition, is investigated by means of atomic force microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The results show an optimal reduction in surface roughness and at the same time a good crystalline quality when 75% O2 is introduced in the sputtering gas and deposition is performed between room temperature and 573 K. Subsequent annealing at 773 K further improves the film quality. The introduction of Ti or Pt as bottom electrode maintains a good surface and crystalline quality. By means of piezoelectric force microscope, we prove a piezoelectric response of the film in accordance with the literature, in spite of the low ZnO thickness and the reduced grain size, with a unipolar orientation and homogenous displacement when deposited on Ti electrode. Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in water is a highly efficient and green approach. However, the low quantum efficiency is an intractable obstacle to lower the photocatalytic efficiency of photocatalysts. Herein, the TiO2/ZnO heterojunction thin films combined with surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) were prepared through magnetron sputtering, which was designed to drive rapid bulk and surface separation of charge carriers. The morphology and structural and compositional properties of films were investigated via different techniques such as SEM, XRD, Raman, AFM, and XPS. It has been found that by controlling the O2/Ar ratio, the surface morphology, thickness, chemical composition, and crystal structure can be regulated, ultimately enhancing the photocatalytic performance of the TiO2/ZnO heterostructures. In addition, the heterojunction thin film showed improved photocatalytic properties compared with the other nano-films when the outer TiO2 layer was prepared at an O2/Ar ratio of 10:35. It degraded 88.0% of Rhodamine B (RhB) in 90 min and 90.8% of RhB in 120 min. This was attributed to the heterojunction interface and surface OVs, which accelerated the separation of electron–hole (e–h) pairs. Full article
