Background: Estimating race times for open-water swimming based on pool swimming times could be useful for talent identification and training optimisation. We aimed to compare the swimming speeds of the world’s top and other swimmers in the 2023 Aquatics Championship men’s 10 km OWS race. Methods: Sixty-five swimmers were divided into four groups: G1 (1st–10th positions), G2 (11st–30th positions), G3 (31st–47th positions), and G4 (48th–65th positions). Swimming speed, stroke frequency (SF), and stroke length (SL) for each lap (laps 1–6) were recorded. Critical speed (CS) was calculated from each participant’s personal best times in the 400, 800, and 1500 m freestyle events in the pool. Swimming speed against CS was calculated (%CS). Results: The top performance group (G1) maintained their swimming speed from beginning (lap 1, 1.53 m/s) to end (lap 6, 1.50 m/s), at 92.7 ± 1.9% of CS, characterised by longer SL (1.26 m) and lower SF (72.86 rpm). G3 and G4 were unable to maintain their swimming speed, which decreased from G3: 97.64 ± 1.62% and G4: 96.10 ± 1.96% of CS at lap 1 to G3: 88.39 ± 3.78% and G4: 85.13 ± 5.04% at lap 6. This reduction in swimming speed is consistent with the increased reliance on anaerobic metabolism reported in previous studies under similar conditions. Conclusions: Race pacing for maintaining speeds of 92%CS throughout the race could be an important resilient index in open-water swimming. %CS might be a useful index for estimating the athletic performance level in open-water swimming. The spatial variability in rock mass mechanical parameters critically affects slope stability assessments. This study investigated the southern slope of the Bayan Obo open-pit mine. A representative elementary volume (REV) with a side length of 14 m was determined through discrete fracture network (DFN) simulations. Based on the rock quality designation (RQD) data from 40 boreholes, a three-dimensional spatial distribution model of the RQD was constructed using Ordinary Kriging interpolation. The RQD values were converted into geological strength index (GSI) values through an empirical correlation, and the generalized Hoek–Brown criterion was applied to develop a spatially heterogeneous equivalent mechanical parameter field. Numerical simulations were performed using FLAC3D, with the slope stability evaluated using the point safety factor (PSF) method. For comparison, three homogeneous benchmark models based on the 5th, 25th, and 50th percentiles produced profile-scale safety factors of 0.96–1.92 and failed to replicate the observed failure geometry. By contrast, the heterogeneous model yielded safety factors of approximately 1.03–1.08 and accurately reproduced the mapped sliding surface. These findings demonstrate that incorporating spatial heterogeneity significantly improves the accuracy of slope stability assessments, providing a robust theoretical basis for targeted monitoring and reinforcement design. Ozone (O3) occurs in nature as a chemical compound made of three oxygen atoms. It is an unstable, highly oxidative gas that rapidly decomposes into oxygen. The therapeutic use of O3 dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and is currently based on the application of low doses, inducing a moderate oxidative stress that stimulates the antioxidant cellular defenses without causing cell damage. Low O3 doses also induce anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects, and their anticancer potential is under investigation. In addition, the oxidative properties of O3 make it an excellent antibacterial, antimycotic, and antiviral agent. Thanks to these properties, O3 is currently widely used in several medical fields. However, its chemical instability represents an application limit, and ozonated oil is the only stabilized form of medical O3. In recent years, novel O3 formulations have been proposed for their sustained and more efficient administration, based on nanotechnology. This review offers an overview of the nanocarriers designed for the delivery of medical O3, and of their therapeutic applications. The reviewed articles demonstrate that research is active and productive, though it is a rather new entry in the nanotechnological field. Liposomes, nanobubbles, nanoconstructed hydrogels, polymeric nanoparticles, and niosomes were designed to deliver O3 and have been proven to exert antiseptic, anticancer, and pro-regenerative effects when administered in vitro and in vivo. Improving the therapeutic administration of O3 through nanocarriers is a just-started challenge, and multiple prospects may be foreseen. Full article

Sea ice parameters are crucial for polar ship design. During China’s 39th Antarctic Scientific Expedition, ice condition from the entire navigation process of the research vessel Xuelong 2 was recorded using shipborne cameras. To obtain sea ice parameters, two deep learning models, Ice-Deeplab and U-Net, were employed to automatically obtain sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice thickness (SIT), providing high-frequency data at 5-min intervals. During the observation period, ice navigation accounted for 32 days, constituting less than 20% of the total 163 voyage days. Notably, 63% of the navigation was in ice fields with less than 10% concentration, while only 18.9% occurred in packed ice (concentration > 90%) or level ice regions. SIT ranges from 100 cm to 234 cm and follows a normal distribution. The results demonstrate that, to achieve enhanced navigation efficiency and fulfill expedition objectives, the research vessel substantially reduced duration in high-concentration ice areas. Additionally, the results of SIC extracted from shipborne camera images were compared with the data from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) satellite remote sensing. In summary, the sea ice parameter data obtained from shipborne camera images offer high spatial and temporal resolution, making them more suitable for engineering applications in establishing sea ice environmental parameters. This study examines how the newly established United States pursued economic development through diplomatic and commercial initiatives with the Ottoman Empire, navigating regional powers and the era’s political-economic conditions. It analyzes using American archival sources how America endeavored to establish commercial and diplomatic relations with the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, which it viewed as critical markets in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before signing any formal agreement. The research tracks how these early efforts laid foundations for what would become one of the world’s largest economies. The study analyzes America’s diplomatic efforts to secure an agreement with the Ottoman Empire prior to the 7 May 1830 trade agreement—which laid the foundation for bilateral relations—alongside the reactions of regional powers, the prevailing conditions of the period, and the Ottoman administration’s reluctance due to various factors, based on U.S. archival sources that, to the best of our knowledge, have not previously been utilized in existing studies. Catalytic and bioelectrocatalytic properties of four white rot fungal laccases (Trametes hirsuta, ThL; Coriolopsis caperata, CcL; Steccherinum murashkinskyi, SmL; and Antrodiella faginea, AfL) from different orthologous groups were comparatively studied in homogeneous reactions of electron donor substrate oxidation and in a heterogeneous reaction of dioxygen electroreduction. The ThL and CcL laccases belong to high-redox-potential enzymes (E0T1 = 780 mV), while the AfL and SmL laccases are medium-redox-potential enzymes (E0T1 = 620 and 650 mV). We evaluated the efficiency of laccases in mediatorless bioelectrocatalytic dioxygen reduction by the steady-state potential (Ess), onset potential (Eonset), half-wave potential (E1/2), and the slope of the linear segment of the polarization curve. A good correlation was observed between the T1 center potential of the laccases and their electrocatalytic characteristics; however, no correlation with the homogeneous reactions of electron donor substrates’ oxidation was detected. The results obtained are discussed in the light of the known data on the three-dimensional structures of the laccases studied. Full article

Mapping Clinical Questions to the Nursing Interventions Classification: An Evidence-Based Needs Assessment in Emergency and Intensive Care Nursing Practice in South Korea

Background/Objectives: Evidence-based nursing practice (EBNP) is essential in high-acuity settings such as intensive care units (ICUs) and emergency departments (EDs), where nurses are frequently required to make time-critical, high-stakes clinical decisions that directly influence patient safety and outcomes. Despite its recognized importance, the implementation of EBNP remains inconsistent, with frontline nurses often facing barriers to accessing and applying current evidence. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study systematically mapped and prioritized clinical questions generated by ICU and ED nurses at a tertiary hospital in South Korea. Using open-ended questionnaires, 204 clinical questions were collected from 112 nurses. Each question was coded and classified according to the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) taxonomy (8th edition) through a structured cross-mapping methodology. Inter-rater reliability was assessed using Cohen’s kappa coefficient. Results: The majority of clinical questions (56.9%) were mapped to the Physiological: Complex domain, with infection control, ventilator management, and tissue perfusion management identified as the most frequent areas of inquiry. Patient safety was the second most common domain (21.6%). Notably, no clinical questions were mapped to the Family or Community domains, highlighting a gap in holistic and transitional care considerations. The mapping process demonstrated high inter-rater reliability (κ = 0.85, 95% CI: 0.80–0.89). Conclusions: Frontline nurses in high-acuity environments predominantly seek evidence related to complex physiological interventions and patient safety, while holistic and community-oriented care remain underrepresented in clinical inquiry. Utilizing the NIC taxonomy for systematic mapping establishes a reliable framework to identify evidence gaps and support targeted interventions in nursing practice. Regular protocol evaluation, alignment of continuing education with empirically identified priorities, and the integration of concise evidence summaries into clinical workflows are recommended to enhance EBNP implementation. Future research should expand to multicenter and interdisciplinary settings, incorporate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence for automated mapping, and assess the long-term impact of evidence-based interventions on patient outcomes. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the etiologic agent that causes the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) identified in Wuhan, in 2019. Men are more prone to developing severe manifestations than women, suggesting a possible crucial role of sex hormones. 17,β-Estradiol (E2) and 1,25 α dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol) act upon gene pathways as immunomodulators in several infectious respiratory diseases. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the influence of E2 and calcitriol on the VSV-based pseudovirus SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro. We infected Vero E6 cells with the recombinant VSV-based pseudovirus SARS-CoV-2 and the SARS-CoV-2 viruses according to the pre-treatment and pre–post-treatment models. The Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) and Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) gene expression did not change under different treatments. The VSV-based pseudovirus SARS-CoV-2 infection showed a significant decrease in the focus-forming unit count in the presence of E2 and calcitriol (either alone or in combination) in the pre-treatment model, while in the pre–post-treatment model, the infection was inhibited only in the presence of E2. Th SARS-CoV-2 infection highlighted a decrease in viral titres in the presence of E2 and calcitriol only in the pre–post-treatment model. 17,β-Estradiol and calcitriol can exert an inhibitory effect on SARS-CoV-2 infections, demonstrating their protective role against viral infections. Johannes Althusius (1563–1638) was a pioneer of early modern federalism. Opposing Jean Bodin’s theory of absolute sovereignty, his theory, centered on association and symbiosis, laid the groundwork for later concepts such as associationalism, consociationalism, and the principle of subsidiarity. While his ideas have been rediscovered and reinterpreted by scholars since the 20th century, systematic research on his federalist framework, especially contrasting it with rival theories of that time, remains insufficient. This article addresses this research gap by systematically exploring Althusius’s federalism. It argues that Althusius’s covenant-based, multi-level associational/federal framework provided a counter-theory to the concept of absolute sovereignty. Systematically studying his federalism not only helps to restore his federalist ideas to their rightful place in the history of federalist thought, but also provides insights for contemporary governance paradigms struggling with modern pluralism. Plant Growth-Promoting Serratia and Erwinia Strains Enhance Tea Plant Tolerance and Rhizosphere Microbial Diversity Under Heavy Metal Stress

This study demonstrated that application of the particular plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains Erwinia sp. and Serratia sp. (named C15 and C20, respectively) significantly enhanced tea plant resilience in Zn (zinc)-, Pb (lead)-, and Zn + Pb-contaminated soils by the improving survival rates (over 60%) and chlorophyll content of tea plants, and by reducing the accumulation of these metals in tea plants’ tissues (by 19–37%). The PGPRs elevated key soil nutrients organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TH), hydrolysable nitrogen (HN), and available potassium (APO) and phosphorus (APH) contents. Compared to non-PGPR controls, both strains consistently increased microbial α-diversity (Chao1 index: +28–42% in Zn/Pb soils; Shannon index: +19–33%) across all contamination regimes. PCoA/UniFrac analyses confirmed distinct clustering of PGPR-treated communities, with strain-specific enrichment of metal-adapted taxa, including Pseudomonas (LDA = 6) and Bacillus (LDA = 4) under Zn stress; Rhodanobacter (LDA = 4) under Pb stress; and Lysobacter (LDA = 5) in Zn + Pb co-contamination. Fungal restructuring featured elevated Mortierella (LDA = 6) in Zn soils and stress-tolerant Ascomycota dominance in co-contaminated soils. Multivariate correlations revealed that the PGPR-produced auxin was positively correlated with soil carbon dynamics and Mortierellomycota abundance (r = 0.729), while the chlorophyll content in leaves was closely associated with Cyanobacteria and reduced by Pb accumulation. These findings highlighted that PGPR could mediate and improve in tea plant physiology, soil fertility, and stress-adapted microbiome recruitment under heavy metal contaminated soil and stress. In this study, the efficacy of super white cement (SWC) to improve organic soils was researched. For stabilization, 10%, 15%, and 20% proportions of SWC were added to organic soil. After improvement with SWC, Atterberg limit testing, standard Proctor tests, triaxial compression tests, and swelling and compressibility tests were performed on the organic soil. Proctor tests showed that stabilization of organic soil with SWC increased maximum dry density (MDD) and optimum moisture content (OMC) values. After stabilization, the unconfined compressional strength values of the soil increased. This increase continued until the 28th day and had a reducing trend after improvement with SWC, linked to time. In addition to the reaction between SWC and OS, the time-dependent behavior of OS also contributed to this behavior. With the increase in SWC proportions, the cohesion intercept and internal friction angle values rapidly increased until the 56th day. This increase began to reduce after the 56th day. After stabilization, the swelling percentage and compressibility values for the soil reduced. The addition of SWC within organic soil appeared to improve the engineering properties of the soil. This study applies Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and mathematical modeling to examine uterine and umbilical arterial blood flow during pregnancy, providing a more detailed understanding of hemodynamic changes across gestation. Statistical analysis of Doppler ultrasound data from a large cohort of more than 200 pregnant women (in the second and third trimesters) reveals significant increases in the umbilical arterial peak systolic velocity (PSV) between the 22nd and 30th weeks, while uterine artery velocities remain relatively stable, suggesting adaptations in vascular resistance during pregnancy. By combining the Navier–Stokes equations with Doppler ultrasound-derived inlet velocity profiles, we quantify several key fluid dynamics parameters, including time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), relative residence time (RRT), Reynolds number (Re), and Dean number (De), evaluating laminar flow stability in the uterine artery and secondary flow patterns in the umbilical artery. Since blood exhibits shear-dependent viscosity and complex rheological behavior, modeling it as a non-Newtonian fluid is essential to accurately capture pulsatile flow dynamics and wall shear stresses in these vessels. Unlike conventional imaging techniques, CFD offers enhanced visualization of blood flow characteristics such as streamlines, velocity distributions, and instantaneous particle motion, providing insights that are not easily captured by Doppler ultrasound alone. Specifically, CFD reveals secondary flow patterns in the umbilical artery, which interact with the primary flow, a phenomenon that is challenging to observe with ultrasound. These findings refine existing hemodynamic models, provide population-specific reference values for clinical assessments, and improve our understanding of the relationship between umbilical arterial flow dynamics and fetal growth restriction, with important implications for maternal and fetal health monitoring. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of the ultrasound-guided thoracolumbar erector spinae plane (TL-ESP) block in standing horses. A total of 24 injections (n = 12) were performed at the L1 level using either 0.1 mL/kg of saline solution (SS group) or 2% lidocaine (LID group). The block feasibility was assessed based on needle visualization and injection time, while efficacy was evaluated through craniocaudal and dorsoventral (DV) spread using the pinprick technique over 270 min. Desensitization was observed at least once in 100% of horses in the LID group and in 75% in the SS group (p = 0.001). However, in the SS group, desensitization was primarily limited to the Th18 metamer at the 2 cm DV position, with a shorter duration compared to the LID group. The block onset occurred at 22.5 (11.25–60) min in the LID group and at 5 (5–30) min in the SS group (p = 0.069). The number of affected metamers was significantly higher in the LID group (2 [1,2,3]) compared to the SS group (1 [1–2.25], p = 0.014). At the 2 cm DV point, the end of the block effect occurred at 135 (120–210) min in the LID group and at 60 (3.75–60) min in the SS group (p = 0.001). Needle visualization was excellent in 95.8% of cases, and the mean injection time was 2.5 (2–3) min. These findings confirm that the TL-ESP block is a feasible technique in standing horses. However, its effect is predominantly localized to dorsal dermatomes with a limited ventral spread. Future studies evaluating larger volumes and multiple injection sites are warranted to enhance its clinical applicability. Full article

Since its discovery in the late 19th century, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) has had a significant medical and societal impact, primarily affecting newborns, toddlers, and young adults. While new pharmaceutical strategies are effective in treating SMA in a particular subset of patients, continued research is necessary to improve the well-being of patients. Treatments are needed for those who do not respond to newly approved drugs and older patients with significantly compromised neuron systems. After summarizing SMA genotypes, phenotypes, and approved pharmacological treatments, this review presents ongoing trials for approved and new molecules, new formulations, and administration methods. Based on the work of our lab, we also discuss nutritional interventions that aim to counteract the oxidative stress present in SMA cells. Finally, we assess rehabilitative interventions, focusing on psychological approaches. Full article

Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the simultaneous 75 g Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), and fetal pancreatic circumference at 24–28 weeks of gestation. Methods: This prospective case–control study was conducted between September 2024 and February 2025 at our perinatology clinic, which provides tertiary health care services. The correlation between the 75 g OGTT, GDM, and pancreatic circumference was assessed by comparing fetal pancreatic circumference between the groups with and without GDM at the time of diagnosis. Results: A total of 130 pregnant patients were recruited for this` study, with 64 patients forming the GDM group and 66 patients forming the control group. Fetal pancreas circumference (7.0 cm vs. 6.4 cm, p < 0.001), fetal pancreas circumference percentile (88.5 vs. 52, p < 0.001), and the rate of fetal pancreas size >90th percentile (15.6% vs. 3%, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the GDM group compared to the control group. Conclusions: Although our findings demonstrate a statistically significant correlation between fetal pancreatic circumference and GDM, diagnostic performance remains modest. Therefore, fetal pancreatic circumference should be interpreted as a supportive marker, such as family history, rather than a definitive marker for identifying individuals at risk for GDM.
