High-Resolution Spatiotemporal Carbon Emission Estimation in Northeast China Based on XGBoost and Multi-Source Data

Accurately characterizing spatiotemporal patterns of carbon emissions and their driving mechanisms is essential for advancing regional low-carbon transitions. Focusing on northeast China, a representative old industrial base, this study develops a spatialized carbon emission estimation framework using an XGBoost model that integrates nighttime light data, land-use information, population, and economic indicators. A 1 km resolution carbon emission dataset spanning 2000 to 2021 is generated, and the SHAP method reveals nonlinear responses and stage-dependent evolutions of key driving factors. The results demonstrate three key findings. Carbon emissions in northeast China increased from 636 Mt in 2000 to 1131 Mt in 2021, exhibiting three distinct phases: rapid expansion (2000–2010, +36%), peak stabilization (2010–2015, +13%), and localized contraction (2015–2021, +3%). Liaoning Province contributed 46% of total emissions in 2021, while Jilin showed the fastest growth rate at 92%. County-level Moran’s I values (0.292–0.349) remain substantially lower than city-level values (0.642–0.700), revealing scale-dependent spatial clustering. High–high clusters concentrated persistently in southern Liaoning, encompassing eight cities by 2010, whereas low–low clusters dominated northern Heilongjiang. Population and GDP exhibited saturating marginal effects after 2015, with SHAP values plateauing beyond thresholds of approximately 450,000 persons and 420 billion CNY respectively, indicating gradual decoupling between economic growth and emissions. Industrial mining land influence declined by 68% from 2005 to 2020, while urban land-use ratio maintained stable contributions. This high-resolution spatiotemporal dataset provides empirical evidence for designing threshold-based emission reduction policies, identifying regional transfer risks, and implementing county-level differentiated strategies in old industrial bases undergoing low-carbon transition. The XGBoost–SHAP framework demonstrates transferability to other heavy industrial regions facing similar structural transformation challenges. Full article

This text systematically investigates the Laotudingzi monzogranite (a gold-hosting intrusion) and the Dongbaligou gold ore deposit in the Laoling gold ore belt through comprehensive geochronological, whole-rock geochemical (macroelement and microelement), strontium-neodymium-lead-hafnium isotopic and in situ sulfur-lead isotopic analysis of pyrite, combined with hydrogen-oxygen isotopic studies of hydrothermal quartz. The results demonstrate a significant Early–Middle Jurassic magmatic-mineralization event in southern Jilin Province (Ji’nan). The gold mine is structurally controlled by detachment fractures within the Laoling metamorphic core complex, which developed in an extended environment. The metallogenic materials are primarily derived from adakitic magma, supporting a “decratonic-type” genetic model. By integrating geochronological, geochemical, and isotopic datasets from the ore-related intrusions and gold deposits, as well as fluid inclusion characteristics, we elucidate the metallogenic mechanism linking Jurassic gold mineralization to subduction-related cratonic destruction. The process involved lower crustal thickening induced by Paleo-Pacific Plate subduction, lithospheric destabilization via gravitational foundering and delamination, and syn-extensional magmatism that sourced ore-forming fluids during cratonic lithosphere thinning. This work establishes a genetic framework connecting plate subduction, lithospheric removal, and gold endowment in convergent margin settings. Full article

Under global warming, the rising frequency and intensity of extreme climate events pose challenges to disaster prevention and sustainable development. Based on daily meteorological observations from 1970 to 2020 in Jilin Province, this study analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution and driving mechanisms of extreme temperature and precipitation events. Linear trend analysis and the Mann–Kendall test were employed to examine temporal trends and abrupt change years in extreme temperature and precipitation indices. Wavelet analysis was used to identify dominant periodicities and multi-scale variability. Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis (EOF) revealed the spatial distribution characteristics of variability in extreme precipitation and temperature across Jilin Province, identifying high-incidence zones for extreme temperature and precipitation events. Additionally, Pearson correlation analysis was to investigate the correlation patterns between extreme climate indices in Jilin Province and geographical environmental factors alongside atmospheric circulation indicators. Results show that: (1) Warm-related temperature indices display significant upward trends, while cold-related indices generally decline, with abrupt changes mainly occurring in the 1980s–1990s and dominant periodicities of 3–5 years. Precipitation indices, though variable, show general increases with 3–4year cycles. (2) Spatially, most indices follow an east–high to west–low gradient. Temperature indices exhibit spatial coherence, while precipitation indices vary, especially between the northwest and central-southern regions. (3) The Arctic Oscillation (AO) exhibits a significant negative correlation with the extreme cold index, with correlation coefficients ranging from −0.31 to −0.46. It shows a positive correlation with the extreme warm index, with correlation coefficients between 0.16 and 0.18, confirming its regulatory role in cold air activity over Northeast China, particularly elevation and latitude, influence the spatial distribution of precipitation. These findings enhance understanding of extreme climate behaviors in Northeast China and inform regional risk management strategies. Full article

Under the spatial distribution of water resources, with more water resources in the southern regions and less in the northern regions, and the “north–south grain transport” pattern, calculating the virtual water flow in food trade between provinces in China and analyzing its sustainability is crucial for ensuring the country’s water resources and food security. By considering various products and consumption types, the virtual water flow in inter-provincial grain trade is estimated using the Minimum Transport Cost Method and the Penman-Monteith formula. The sustainability of this virtual water flow is evaluated at the provincial level. (1) The results show that the top three provinces with the largest net virtual water outflow from inter-provincial grain trade are Heilongjiang, Henan, and Anhui, with net outflows of 43.166 billion m3, 18.974 billion m3, and 13.089 billion m3, respectively. The top three provinces with the largest net virtual water inflows are Hebei, Guangxi, and Liaoning, with net inflows of 18.875 billion m3, 10.076 billion m3, and 8.795 billion m3, respectively. (2) The largest inter-provincial virtual water flow occurs from Henan to Hebei (15.06 billion m3), followed by Inner Mongolia to Hunan (9.57 billion m3), and Heilongjiang to Hubei (9.04 billion m3). (3) Overall, the current pattern of virtual water flow in China’s grain trade is sustainable, though several exporting provinces are under greater stress. In the actual scenario, the average water resource pressure index across all provinces is 0.43, 17.31% lower than the average of 0.52 in the scenario without inter-provincial grain trade. Compared with the scenario without inter-provincial grain product trade, in the actual scenario, Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Inner Mongolia show a higher increase in water resource pressure index, with increases of 94.74%, 73.68%, and 48%, respectively; Beijing, Shanghai, and Qinghai show a greater decrease in water resource pressure index, with reductions of 94.64%, 79.41%, and 66.67%, individually. And then, efforts should be made to adjust and optimize the structure of grain production and circulation; provinces with virtual water net outflow (such as Heilongjiang, Henan, Anhui, etc.) need to adjust their grain cultivation types and grain export structures.; provinces with virtual water net inflow (such as Hebei, Guangxi, Liaoning, etc.) can appropriately expand the scale of grain cultivation, while adjusting their diets to reduce the demand for water-intensive grains. The Yanbian area of Jilin Province is situated in the eastern segment of the southern margin of the Xing-Meng Orogenic Belt, representing a region that has been superimposed and reworked by the Paleo-Asian Ocean and Circum-Pacific tectonic event. To determine the emplacement age and petrogenesis of the quartz diorite in the Fudong area of Yanbian, Jilin Province, and to investigate its tectonic setting, petrographic studies, zircon U-Pb geochronology, whole-rock Sr-Nd isotopic analysis, zircon Hf isotopic analysis, and detailed geochemical investigations of this intrusion were carried out. The results indicate that the Fudong quartz diorite has: (1) A weighted mean zircon U-Pb age of 186 ± 1.7 Ma, corresponding to the Late Early Jurassic; (2) geochemically high concentrations of Sr (average: 1146 ppm) and Ba (average: 1213 ppm), and enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREE), along with notably high Th/Yb and Rb/Y ratios; (3) geochemically, the quartz diorite is enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., Ba, K) and light rare earth elements (LREEs), while being depleted in high-field-strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Ta, Ti). These features are consistent with magma formed in a subduction-related setting. In summary, the Fudong quartz diorite formed within an active continental margin tectonic environment associated with the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate. Its primary magma likely originated from an enriched lithospheric mantle that had been metasomatized by fluids released from the subducted slab. Full article

We incorporated a comprehensive dataset encompassing recent measurements from satellites such as the Macau Science Satgellite-1 (MSS-1), Swarm, and CHAMP, as well as aero and ocean magnetic measurements, alongside ground-based data from 1936 to 2000. This amalgamation is the basis for constructing a lithospheric magnetic field model of the Chinese mainland, employing the three-dimensional Surface Spline (3DSS) model. Additionally, we used the World Digital Magnetic Anomaly Map (WDMAM)-2.1 and CHAOS-7.13 models to address data gaps horizontally and vertically. To evaluate the efficacy of the new model, we compared it not only with established models such as SHA1050, NGDC720, and LCS-1 but also with the new model excluding the MSS-1 data. The results show a high agreement between the 3DSS model and other global models at a spatial resolution of 0.05°. Furthermore, we inspected the rapid variations in the magnetic field with increasing altitude, demonstrating a smooth transition across the altitudes covered by the three satellites. Error analyses reflected the importance of MSS-1 data, which contributed notably to modelling by capturing finer-scale magnetic structures. The increased data availability correlated positively with the model’s accuracy, as evidenced by the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), registering an optimal value of 0.02 nT. The new model reveals additional geological details in southern Tibet, northeastern Inner Mongolia, and the adjacent areas of Liaoning and Jilin provinces, which are not discernible in other global models. The relationship between these anomalies and heat flow in northeastern China appears less evident, suggesting a complex interplay of orogenic processes and surface mineralogy in shaping these magnetic signatures. The Xiangluwanzi gold deposit, located in the southern Jilin Province of Northeast China, is hosted within the Jurassic Guosong Formation, and surrounded by Archean granitoids. The ore bodies are governed by near-EW and NE-trending faults. Four alteration/mineralization stages have been distinguished: I, pyrite–sericite–quartz; II, gold–pyrite–quartz; III, sphalerite–quartz–carbonate; and IV, quartz–carbonate. Four types of fluid inclusions (FIs) were identified: pure CO2, CO2-rich, CO2-bearing, and NaCl–H2O fluid inclusions. Stage-I quartz veins contain all FIs, whereas stage II quartz veins host CO2-rich, CO2-bearing, and NaCl-H2O FIs. Only NaCl–H2O FIs were present in stages-III and -IV quartz veins. The homogenization temperatures of the FIs range, respectively, from 233 to 279, 185–242, 171–217, and 148–170 °C in stages I–IV, having salinities of 2.62–8.54, 2.81–7.58, 4.32–6.58, and 3.37–5.25 wt% NaCl equivalents, respectively. The H (−93.5‰ to −75.9‰) and O (δ18OH2O = −5.8‰ to 4.6‰) isotopic compositions suggest magmatic water was gradually diluted by meteoric water. Carbon isotopic values (22.8‰ to −17.8‰) suggest the incorporation of organic carbon from surrounding strata via water–rock interactions. Fluid boiling, fluid mixing, and water–rock interactions are the primary mechanisms driving mineral precipitation. Full article

The newly discovered Erdaodianzi gold deposit in southern Jilin Province, Northeast China, is located in the eastern segment of the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). It is a large-scale gold deposit with reserves of 38.4 tons of gold. Gold mineralization in the ore district primarily occurs in gold-bearing quartz–sulfide veins. The gold ore occurs mainly as vein, veinlet, crumby, and disseminated structures. The hydrothermal process can be divided into three stages: stage I, characterized by quartz, arsenopyrite, and pyrite; stage II, featuring quartz, arsenopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and native gold; and stage III, consisting of quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, electrum (a naturally occurring Au–Ag alloy), and calcite. Electrum and native gold primarily occur within the fissures of the polymetallic sulfides. To determine the enrichment mechanism of the Au element and the genetic types of ore deposits in the Erdaodianzi deposit, sourcing in situ trace element data, element mapping and sulfur isotope analysis were carried out on sphalerites from different stages using LA-ICP-MS. Minor invisible gold, in the form of Au–Ag alloy inclusions, is present within sphalerites, as revealed by time-resolved depth profiles. The LA-ICP-MS trace element data and mapping results indicate that trivalent or quadrivalent cations, such as Sb3+ and Te4+, exhibit a strong correlation with Au. This correlation can be explained by a coupled substitution mechanism, where these cations (Sb3+ and Te4+) replace zinc ions within the mineral structure, resulting in a strong association with Au. Similarly, the element Pb exhibits a close relationship with Au, which can be attributed to the incorporation of tetravalent cations like Te4+ into the mineral structure. The positive correlation between Hg and Au can be attributed to the formation of vacancies and defects within sphalerite, caused by the aforementioned coupled substitution mechanism. A slight positive relationship between Au and other divalent cations, including Fe2+, Mn2+, and Cd2+, may result from these cations simply replacing Zn within the sphalerite lattice. The crystallization temperatures of the sphalerite, calculated via the Fe/Zn ratio, range from 238 °C to 320 °C. The δ34S values are divided into two intervals: one ranging from −1.99 to −1.12‰ and the other varying from 10.96 to 11.48‰. The sulfur isotopic analysis revealed that the ore-forming materials originated from magmatic rock, with some incorporation of metamorphic rock. Comparative studies of the Erdaodianzi gold deposit and other gold deposits in the Jiapigou–Haigou gold belt have confirmed that they are all mesothermal magmatic–hydrothermal lode gold deposits formed at the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate during the Middle Jurassic. The Jiapigou–Haigou gold belt extends northwest to the Huadian area of Jilin province. This suggests potential for research on gold mineralization in the northwest of the belt and indicates a new direction for further gold prospecting in the region. Full article

Utilizing the best typhoon track data, district and county scale disaster data in Jilin Province, meteorological data, and geographical data, the combined weighting method of AHP-EWM (Analytic Hierarchy Process–Entropy Weight Method) and game theory is employed to conduct a comprehensive risk analysis and comparison of the disaster risk caused by two typhoons, Maysak and Haishen, in Jilin Province. Game theory enhances precision in evaluation beyond conventional approaches, effectively addressing the shortcomings of both subjective and objective weighting methods. Typhoon Maysak and Typhoon Haishen exhibit analogous tracks. They have successively exerted an impact on Jilin Province, and the phenomenon of overlapping rain areas is a crucial factor in triggering disasters. Typhoon Maysak features stronger wind force and greater hourly rainfall intensity, while Typhoon Haishen has a longer duration of rainfall. Additionally, Typhoon Maysak causes more severe disasters in Jilin Province. With regard to the four dimensions of disaster risk, the analysis of hazards reveals that the areas categorized as high risk and above in relation to the two typhoons are mainly located in the central-southern and eastern regions of Jilin Province. Typhoon Maysak has a slightly higher hazard level. During the exposure assessment, it was determined that the high-risk areas occupied 16% of the gross area of Jilin Province. It is mainly concentrated in three economically developed cities, as well as some large agricultural counties. In the context of vulnerability analysis, regions classified as high risk and above constitute 54% of the overall area. The areas classified as having high vulnerability are predominantly located in Yushu, Nong’an, and Songyuan. From the analysis of emergency response and recovery ability, Changchun has strong typhoon disaster prevention and reduction ability. This is proportional to the local level of economic development. The mountainous areas in the east and the regions to the west are comparatively weak. Finally, the comprehensive typhoon disaster risk zoning indicates that the zoning of the two typhoons is relatively comparable. When it comes to high-risk and above areas, Typhoon Maysak accounts for 38% of the total area, while Typhoon Haishen occupies 47%. The regions with low risk are predominantly found in Changchun, across the majority of Baicheng, and at the intersection of Baishan and Jilin. Upon comparing the disasters induced by two typhoons in Jilin Province, it was observed that the disasters caused by Typhoon Maysak were considerably more severe than those caused by Typhoon Haishen. This finding aligns with the intense wind and heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon Maysak. Full article

Mica is a kind of important rock-forming mineral in the lithosphere of Earth, which can be a superior tool used to trace the origin and late evolution of rock. The Jian forsterite jade (a kind of geological skarn) is an emerging kind of gemstone in China with a beautiful color and luster, discovered in Ji’an County, Jilin Province, Northeast China. It is mainly composed of rare Mg-rich forsterite (Mg# (Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) up to 99), serpentine and brucite. The source of hydrothermal fluid triggering the late metamorphism (the serpentinization of forsterite) of forsterite jade deposits remains unclear. We report a series of phlogopites with a regular range of mineral compositions in the forsterite jade deposit. Micrographs show that the phlogopites are associated with forsterite and coexist with serpentine in forsterite jade, tourmaline and tremolite in the contact zone, and plagioclase in pegmatite, and the related replacement of phlogopite seems to have not occurred. The phlogopites that occurred as single grains or veinlets in forsterite jade named type I are characterized by high XMg, ranging from ~0.98 to ~0.95, and the phlogopites that occurred in the contact zone of forsterite jade and pegmatite named type II are rich in Fe, with a range of XMg from ~0.82 to ~0.66. Additionally, the type II phlogopites are also rich in Ti, Mn, Cl, Li, Rb, Zn, V, Co, Nb and Ta but poor in Na, Sr and F compared to the type I phlogopite. Petrological and mineralogical characteristics and geochemical compositions suggest that the phlogopites are crystallized from the corresponding fluid component by hydrothermal metasomatism. The abundant Mg of the fluid phase is produced during the serpentinization of forsterite, triggered by pegmatitic hydrothermal fluid, and other main materials like K, Al, Si and H2O are provided by the intrusive pegmatite. With the occurrence of and regular compositional variation in phlogopites in the forsterite jade deposit, we suppose that the hydrothermal fluid triggering the serpentinization of the Jian forsterite jade is produced by the intrusive pegmatite. The Batailing Au deposit is a vein-type deposit in central Jilin Province, situated in the southern sector of the Lesser Xing’an–Zhangguangcai Range within the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. NE-trending fault-controlled orebodies occur in the Upper Permian Yangjiagou Formation and quartz diorite–porphyrite. The mineralisation process was delineated into three stages: (I) quartz–arsenopyrite–pyrite, (II) quartz–polymetallic sulphides (main Au mineralisation stage), and (III) quartz–pyrite–carbonate. Fluid inclusions (FIs) in quartz were identified as four types: PC-type (pure CO2), C1-type (CO2-bearing), C2-type (CO2-rich), and W-type (aqueous two-phase). Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the vapor components of the FIs predominantly comprised CO2 with minor quantities of CH4 in stages I–II. Stages I and II encompassed four types of FIs with homogenisation temperature ranging from 264 to 332 °C and 213 to 292 °C and salinity spanning from 4.7 to 11.2 wt% and 1.8 to 11.6 wt%, respectively. Stage III exclusively contained W-type FIs with homogenisation temperature ranging from 152 to 215 °C and salinity spanning from 1.4 to 6.4 wt%. H-O isotopic values (δD = −84 to −79.6‰, δ18OH2O = 6.2 to 6.4‰ in stage I and δD = −96.4 to −90.4‰, δ18OH2O = 2.8 to 4.4‰ in stage II) and microthermometric data indicated that the ore-forming fluids are initially from a magmatic source, with later meteoric water input. Low C isotopic data from CO2 in FIs in quartz (−24.4 to −24.3‰ in stage I and −23.7 to −22.6‰ in stage II) indicated an organic carbon source. Ore precipitation is mainly attributable to fluid immiscibility. S-Pb isotopic data (δ34S = −3.5 to −1.6‰; 206Pb/204Pb = 18.325–18.362, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.523–5.562, 208Pb/204Pb = 38.064–38.221) revealed that ore metals primarily originated from magma. Based on this research, the origin of the Batailing Au deposit is of the mesothermal magmatic–hydrothermal lode type. Full article

Bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum L.) is considered a highly valued non-wood forest product (NWFP) species with edible and medicinal uses in East Asia. It grows in the northeastern forests of China, where stand attributes and structure jointly determine its population characteristics and individuals’ growth. Mapping the regional distributions of its population characteristics can be beneficial in the management of its natural resources, and this mapping should be predicted using machine learning modeling to obtain accurate results. In this study, a total of 60 stands were randomly chosen and screened to investigate natural bog bilberry populations in the eastern mountains of Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces in northeastern China. Individual height, canopy cover area, and fresh weight all increased in stands at higher latitudes, and shoot height was also higher in the eastern stands. The rootstock grove density showed a polynomial quadratic distribution pattern along increasing topographical gradients, resulting in a minimum density of 0.43–0.52 groves m−2 in stands in the southern part (44.3016° N, 129.4558° E) of Heilongjiang. Multivariate linear regression indicated that the bog bilberry density was depressed by host forest tree species diversity; this was assessed using both the Simpson and Shannon–Wiener indices, which also showed polynomial quadratic distribution patterns (with a modeling minimum of 0.27 and a maximum of 1.21, respectively) in response to the increase in latitude. Structural equation models identified positive contributions of tree diameter at breast height and latitude to shoot height and a negative contribution of longitude to the bog bilberry canopy area. Random forest modeling indicated that dense populations with heavy individuals were distributed in eastern Heilongjiang, and large-canopy individuals were distributed in Mudanjiang and Tonghua. In conclusion, bog bilberry populations showed better attributes in northeastern stands where host forest trees had low species diversity, but the dominant species had strong trunks. Full article

The scientific and reasonable division of geographical units of cultivated land reserve resource areas is an important foundation for comprehensive land consolidation (CLC). Saline–alkali land is an important cultivated land reserve resource, and is significant for ensuring food security. This paper constructs a two-level land consolidation index system for cultivated land reserve resource areas. The Kruskal graph theory clustering algorithm was used to divide the study area into four types of ecological zones. On the basis of ecological zones, the study area was further divided into three types of consolidation units. Finally, the spatial relationship between ecological zoning and land use types was clarified, and the classification distribution of land consolidation potential was determined through an analysis of the CLC of two-level geographical units. Da’an City, Jilin province, China, was selected as the study area. The results of this study show the following: (1) In Da’an City, the conservation priority areas are concentrated in the north, the development priority areas are concentrated in the central and southern areas, and the comprehensive upgrade areas and adjustment rebuilding areas are in the transition zones. (2) The CLC potential trend is low in the north but high in the south in Da’an City. This paper proposes a framework for a geographical unit delineation method for saline–alkali-enriched cultivated land reserve resource zones, and analyzes the spatial layout of ecological protection demands and land consolidation potential in Da’an City. The results and conclusions of this study will provide a reference for CLC in cultivated land reserve resource areas. Full article

Shrimp farming and exporting is the main income source for the southern coastal districts of the Mekong Delta. Monitoring these shrimp ponds is helpful in identifying losses incurred due to natural calamities like floods, sources of water pollution by chemicals used in shrimp farming, and changes in the area of cultivation with an increase in demand for shrimp production. Satellite imagery, which is consistent with good spatial resolution and helpful in providing frequent information with temporal imagery, is a better solution for monitoring these shrimp ponds remotely for a larger spatial extent. The shrimp ponds of Cai Doi Vam township, Ca Mau Province, Viet Nam, were mapped using DMC-3 (TripleSat) and Jilin-1 high-resolution satellite imagery for the years 2019 and 2022. The 3 m spatial resolution shrimp pond extent product showed an overall accuracy of 87.5%, with a producer’s accuracy of 90.91% (errors of omission = 11.09%) and a user’s accuracy of 90.91% (errors of commission = 11.09%) for the shrimp pond class. It was noted that 66 ha of shrimp ponds in 2019 were observed to be dry in 2022, and 39 ha of other ponds had been converted into shrimp ponds in 2022. The continuous monitoring of shrimp ponds helps achieve sustainable aquaculture and acts as crucial input for the decision makers for any interventions. Full article

The closure timing of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and the terminal stage of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt have been widely debated in the geological community. It’s known that the gradual scissor-like closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean occurred from west to east during the Paleozoic period. However, it was not until the Triassic period that the complete closure of the ocean occurred at the northeastern margin of the North China Craton. Nevertheless, there is still much uncertainty regarding the Late Triassic tectonic setting in Northeast China. In this study, we focused on the Upper Triassic Dajianggang Formation, located in the Shuangyang area of central Jilin Province, which is situated on the northeastern margin of the North China Plate. Our aim was to determine the formation age of the Dajianggang Formation by analyzing the detrital particle composition, petrogeochemistry, detrital zircon U-Pb isotope dating, and apatite fission track thermochronology. Our results indicated that the primary sandstone provenance area of the Dajianggang Formation in the Shuangyang area is the island arc orogenic belt. The tectonic background of the sandstone provenance area is mainly a continental island arc environment. The provenance area is mostly composed of felsic rocks with sedimentary tendencies, and some of its material may have originated from the northern margin of the North China Craton or the eroded recycle orogenic belt. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of detrital zircons shows that the Dajianggang Formation formed after 226.8 ± 5 Ma. Moreover, analysis of the thermal evolution history modelling shows that the Dajianggang Formation in the Shuangyang area continued to be deposited and heated in the early stage, and then experienced rapid exhumation around 30 Ma. This suggests that the study area underwent an orogenic process during the early stage of formation, but then transitioned into a post-orogenic extension period, which constrained the final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean prior to the Late Triassic period. In addition, our study indicates that the remote effect of the Pacific subduction did not reach the study area until 30 Ma. The central age of the detrital apatite fission track of sample 19DJ-1 is 94.2 ± 8.3 Ma, which is younger than its corresponding stratigraphic age. The two peak ages of the fission track analysis are 62.9 ± 5.4 Ma and 126 ± 11 Ma. These findings provide new evidence for the tectonic evolution of Northeast China and shed light on the Late Triassic tectonic setting, as well as the influence time of subsequent tectonic domains in the southern part of Northeast China.
