Online travel website reviews contain abundant hotel attribute information. Nevertheless, evaluations of such hotel attributes are not completely objective, as they are affected by subjective perceptions from different types of travelers. This study explores the correlations of attribute perceptions across different traveler groups and optimizes hotel recommendation models from the perspective of attribute correlation. Hotel attributes are analyzed based on online reviews collected from TripAdvisor, and the TOPSIS method is used to identify the core attributes. The SentiWordNet sentiment lexicon and PolarityRank algorithm are utilized to calculate attribute sentiment values, which are then applied to OLS regression analysis to explore the relationships between attributes. Finally, a hotel recommendation model based on the collaborative filtering algorithm is constructed, incorporating traveler types and attribute correlation. The research results show core attributes for different types of travelers, verify the existence of attribute perception correlation, and demonstrate that a model considering attribute correlation enhances recommendation accuracy, with an accuracy improvement of 3.16 percentage points. This study investigates a target-based sentiment analysis approach on Turkish texts and examines how lexicon-based methods vary depending on language compatibility and translation strategies. The main objective is to accurately identify target-oriented expressions and to compare the performance of different sentiment lexicons within this context. For this purpose, Turkish user reviews obtained from the Turkish school review and evaluation platform were analysed using three lexicon configurations: SentiWordNet applied in its original English form with target-related term translation (SentiWordNet-EN), its fully Turkish-translated version (SentiWordNet-TR), and a native Turkish resource (SentiTurkNet). SentiTurkNet achieved the highest weighted average F1-score of 0.887 (positive-class F1: 0.926; negative-class F1: 0.760), followed by SentiWordNet-EN with a weighted average F1-score of 0.856 (positive-class F1: 0.898; negative-class F1: 0.720), and SentiWordNet-TR with a weighted average F1-score of 0.824 (positive-class F1: 0.868; negative-class F1: 0.679). One of the most significant findings is that using SentiWordNet in its original English form yields better results than the fully translated version, suggesting that the translation process leads to sentiment loss due to the incomplete preservation of sentiment intensity and contextual meaning. These findings carry important implications for sentiment analysis in low-resource languages: where comprehensive native lexicons are unavailable, translating only target-related terms into a language with richer sentiment resources can be more effective than directly translating the entire lexicon. Therefore, it is concluded that in target-based sentiment analysis, not only language compatibility but also the chosen translation strategy plays a critical role. Full article

Empathetic and coherent responses are critical in automated chatbot-facilitated psychotherapy. This study addresses the challenge of enhancing the emotional and contextual understanding of large language models (LLMs) in psychiatric applications. We introduce Emotion-Aware Embedding Fusion, a novel framework integrating hierarchical fusion and attention mechanisms to prioritize semantic and emotional features in therapy transcripts. Our approach combines multiple emotion lexicons, including NRC Emotion Lexicon, VADER, WordNet, and SentiWordNet, with state-of-the-art LLMs such as Flan-T5, Llama 2, DeepSeek-R1, and ChatGPT 4. Therapy session transcripts, comprising over 2000 samples, are segmented into hierarchical levels (word, sentence, and session) using neural networks, while hierarchical fusion combines these features with pooling techniques to refine emotional representations. Attention mechanisms, including multi-head self-attention and cross-attention, further prioritize emotional and contextual features, enabling the temporal modeling of emotional shifts across sessions. The processed embeddings, computed using BERT, GPT-3, and RoBERTa, are stored in the Facebook AI similarity search vector database, which enables efficient similarity search and clustering across dense vector spaces. Upon user queries, relevant segments are retrieved and provided as context to LLMs, enhancing their ability to generate empathetic and contextually relevant responses. The proposed framework is evaluated across multiple practical use cases to demonstrate real-world applicability, including AI-driven therapy chatbots. The system can be integrated into existing mental health platforms to generate personalized responses based on retrieved therapy session data. The experimental results show that our framework enhances empathy, coherence, informativeness, and fluency, surpassing baseline models while improving LLMs’ emotional intelligence and contextual adaptability for psychotherapy. Finances represent one of the key requirements to perform any useful activity for humanity. Financial markets, e.g., stock markets, forex, and mercantile exchanges, etc., provide the opportunity to anyone to invest and generate finances. However, to reap maximum benefits from these financial markets, effective decision making is required to identify the trade directions, e.g., going long/short by analyzing all the influential factors, e.g., price action, economic policies, and supply/demand estimation, in a timely manner. In this regard, analysis of the financial news and Twitter posts plays a significant role to predict the future behavior of financial markets, public sentiment estimation, and systematic/idiosyncratic risk estimation. In this paper, our proposed work aims to analyze the Twitter posts and Google Finance data to predict the future behavior of the stock markets (one of the key financial markets) in a particular time frame, i.e., hourly, daily, weekly, etc., through a novel StockSentiWordNet (SSWN) model. The proposed SSWN model extends the standard opinion lexicon named SentiWordNet (SWN) through the terms specifically related to the stock markets to train extreme learning machine (ELM) and recurrent neural network (RNN) for stock price prediction. The experiments are performed on two datasets, i.e., Sentiment140 and Twitter datasets, and achieved the accuracy value of 86.06%. Findings show that our work outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches with respect to overall accuracy. In future, we plan to enhance the capability of our method by adding other popular social media, e.g., Facebook and Google News etc. Full article

Modern review websites, namely Yelp and Amazon, permit the users to post online reviews for numerous businesses, services and products. Currently, online reviewing is an imperative task in the manipulation of shopping decisions produced by customers. These reviews afford consumers experience and information regarding the superiority of the product. The prevalent method of strengthening online review evolution is the performance of Sentiment Classification, which is an attractive domain in industrial and academic research. The review helps various domains, and it is problematic to collect interpreted training data. In this paper, an effectual Review Rating Prediction and Sentiment Classification was developed. Here, a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) was employed for the Sentiment Classification process, whereas a Hierarchical Attention Network (HAN) was applied for Review Rating Prediction. The significant features, such as statistical, SentiWordNet and classification features, were extracted for the Sentiment Classification and Review Rating Prediction process. Moreover, the GRU was trained by the designed TD-Spider Taylor ChOA approach, and the HAN was trained by the designed Jaya-TDO approach. The experimental results show that the proposed Jaya-TDO technique attained a better performance of 0.9425, 0.9654 and 0.9538, and that TD-Spider Taylor ChOA achieved 0.9524, 0.9698 and 0.9588 in terms of the precision, recall and F-measure. When COVID-19 was raging around the world, people were more fearful and anxious. In this context, the media should uphold impartiality and shoulder the responsibility of eliminating misinformation. Therefore, our research adopted sentiment analysis technologies to analyze the impartiality of news agencies and analyzed the factors that affect the impartiality of COVID-19-related articles about various countries. The SentiWordNet3.0 and bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) models were employed to analyze the articles and visualize the data. The following conclusions were redrawn in our research. During the pandemic, articles of some news agencies were not objective; the impartiality of news agencies was related to the reliability of news agencies instead of the bias of news agencies; there were obvious differences in the coverage and positivity of international news agencies to report the performance of COVID-19 prevention and control in different countries. Despite the popularity and efficiency of dictionary-based sentiment analysis (DSA) for public health research, limited empirical evidence has been produced about the validity of DSA and potential harms to the validity of DSA. A random sample of a second-hand Ebola tweet dataset was used to evaluate the validity of DSA compared to the manual coding approach and examine the influences of textual features on the validity of DSA. The results revealed substantial inconsistency between DSA and the manual coding approach. The presence of certain textual features such as negation can partially account for the inconsistency between DSA and manual coding. The findings imply that scholars should be careful and critical about findings in disease-related public health research that use DSA. Certain textual features should be more carefully addressed in DSA. Full article

User-generated content on numerous sites is indicative of users’ sentiment towards many issues, from daily food intake to using new products. Amid the active usage of social networks and micro-blogs, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic, we may glean insights into any product or service through users’ feedback and opinions. Thus, it is often difficult and time consuming to go through all the reviews and analyse them in order to recognize the notion of the overall goodness or badness of the reviews before making any decision. To overcome this challenge, sentiment analysis has been used as an effective rapid way to automatically gauge consumers’ opinions. Large reviews will possibly encompass both positive and negative opinions on different features of a product/service in the same review. Therefore, this paper proposes an aspect-oriented sentiment classification using a combination of the prior knowledge topic model algorithm (SA-LDA), automatic labelling (SentiWordNet) and ensemble method (Stacking). The framework is evaluated using the dataset from different domains. The results have shown that the proposed SA-LDA outperformed the standard LDA. In addition, the suggested ensemble learning classifier has increased the accuracy of the classifier by more than ~3% when it is compared to baseline classification algorithms. The study concluded that the proposed approach is equally adaptable across multi-domain applications. Full article

The emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, into the biosphere have the consequence of warming up the planet, hence the existence of climate change. Sentiment analysis has been a popular subject and there has been a plethora of research conducted in this area in recent decades, typically on social media platforms such as Twitter, due to the proliferation of data generated today during discussions on climate change. However, there is not much research on the performances of different sentiment analysis approaches using lexicon, machine learning and hybrid methods, particularly within this domain-specific sentiment. This study aims to find the most effective sentiment analysis approach for climate change tweets and related domains by performing a comparative evaluation of various sentiment analysis approaches. In this context, seven lexicon-based approaches were used, namely SentiWordNet, TextBlob, VADER, SentiStrength, Hu and Liu, MPQA, and WKWSCI. Meanwhile, three machine learning classifiers were used, namely Support Vector Machine, Naïve Bayes, and Logistic Regression, by using two feature extraction techniques, which were Bag-of-Words and TF–IDF. Next, the hybridization between lexicon-based and machine learning-based approaches was performed. The results indicate that the hybrid method outperformed the other two approaches, with hybrid TextBlob and Logistic Regression achieving an F1-score of 75.3%; thus, this has been chosen as the most effective approach. This study also found that lemmatization improved the accuracy of machine learning and hybrid approaches by 1.6%. Meanwhile, the TF–IDF feature extraction technique was slightly better than BoW by increasing the accuracy of the Logistic Regression classifier by 0.6%. However, TF–IDF and BoW had an identical effect on SVM and NB. Future works will include investigating the suitability of deep learning approaches toward this domain-specific sentiment on social media platforms. Full article

The prediction of review rating is an imperative sentiment assessment task that aims to discover the intensity of users’ sentiment toward a target product from several reviews. This paper devises a technique based on sentiment classification for predicting the review rating. Here, the review data are taken from the database. The significant features, such as SentiWordNet-based statistical features, term frequency–inverse document frequency (TF-IDF), number of capitalized words, numerical words, punctuation marks, elongated words, hashtags, emoticons, and number of sentences are mined in feature extraction. The features are mined for sentiment classification, which is performed by random multimodal deep learning (RMDL). The training of RMDL is done using the proposed Spider Taylor-ChOA, which is devised by combining spider monkey optimization (SMO) and Taylor-based chimp optimization algorithm (Taylor-ChOA). Concurrently, the features are considered input for the review rating prediction, which determines positive and negative reviews using the hierarchical attention network (HAN), and training is done using proposed Spider Taylor-ChOA. The proposed Spider Taylor-ChOA-based RMDL performed best with the highest precision of 94.1%, recall of 96.5%, and highest F-measure of 95.3%. The proposed spider Taylor-ChOA-based HAN performed best with the highest precision of 93.1%, recall of 95.4% and highest F-measure of 94.3%. Full article

Amid the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, the closure of educational institutes leads to an unprecedented rise in online learning. For limiting the impact of COVID-19 and obstructing its widespread, educational institutions closed their campuses immediately and academic activities are moved to e-learning platforms. The effectiveness of e-learning is a critical concern for both students and parents, specifically in terms of its suitability to students and teachers and its technical feasibility with respect to different social scenarios. Such concerns must be reviewed from several aspects before e-learning can be adopted at such a larger scale. This study endeavors to investigate the effectiveness of e-learning by analyzing the sentiments of people about e-learning. Due to the rise of social media as an important mode of communication recently, people’s views can be found on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. This study uses a Twitter dataset containing 17,155 tweets about e-learning. Machine learning and deep learning approaches have shown their suitability, capability, and potential for image processing, object detection, and natural language processing tasks and text analysis is no exception. Machine learning approaches have been largely used both for annotation and text and sentiment analysis. Keeping in view the adequacy and efficacy of machine learning models, this study adopts TextBlob, VADER (Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning), and SentiWordNet to analyze the polarity and subjectivity score of tweets’ text. Furthermore, bearing in mind the fact that machine learning models display high classification accuracy, various machine learning models have been used for sentiment classification. Two feature extraction techniques, TF-IDF (Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency) and BoW (Bag of Words) have been used to effectively build and evaluate the models. All the models have been evaluated in terms of various important performance metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. The results reveal that the random forest and support vector machine classifier achieve the highest accuracy of 0.95 when used with Bow features. Performance comparison is carried out for results of TextBlob, VADER, and SentiWordNet, as well as classification results of machine learning models and deep learning models such as CNN (Convolutional Neural Network), LSTM (Long Short Term Memory), CNN-LSTM, and Bi-LSTM (Bidirectional-LSTM). Additionally, topic modeling is performed to find the problems associated with e-learning which indicates that uncertainty of campus opening date, children’s disabilities to grasp online education, and lagging efficient networks for online education are the top three problems. In the derived approach, an analysis is performed on Twitter data for World Cup soccer 2014 held in Brazil to detect the sentiment of the people throughout the world using machine learning techniques. By filtering and analyzing the data using natural language processing techniques, sentiment polarity was calculated based on the emotion words detected in the user tweets. The dataset is normalized to be used by machine learning algorithms and prepared using natural language processing techniques like word tokenization, stemming and lemmatization, part-of-speech (POS) tagger, name entity recognition (NER), and parser to extract emotions for the textual data from each tweet. This approach is implemented using Python programming language and Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK). A derived algorithm extracts emotional words using WordNet with its POS (part-of-speech) for the word in a sentence that has a meaning in the current context, and is assigned sentiment polarity using the SentiWordNet dictionary or using a lexicon-based method. The resultant polarity assigned is further analyzed using naïve Bayes, support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), and random forest machine learning algorithms and visualized on the Weka platform. Naïve Bayes gives the best accuracy of 88.17% whereas random forest gives the best area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) of 0.97. Full article

Our approach uses a novel idea of measuring customer’s loyalty to a product and can assist a new customer to take a decision about a particular product considering its various features and reviews of previous customers. In this study, we use a large sized data set of online reviews of customers from Amazon.com to test the performance of the customer’s reviews. The proposed approach pre-processes the input text via tokenization, Lemmatization and removal of stop words and then applies fuzzy logic approach to take decisions. To find similarity and relevance to a topic, various libraries and API are used in this work such as SentiWordNet, Stanford Core NLP, etc. The approach utilized focuses on identifying polarity of the reviews that may be positive, negative and neutral. To find customer’s loyalty and help in decision making, the fuzzy logic approach is applied using a set of membership functions and rule-based system of fuzzy sets that classify data in various types of loyalty. The implementation of the approach provides high accuracy of 94% of correct loyalty to the e-commerce products that outperforms the previous approaches. Full article

Movie recommender expert systems are valuable tools to provide recommendation services to users. However, the existing movie recommenders are technically lacking in two areas: first, the available movie recommender systems give general recommendations; secondly, existing recommender systems use either quantitative (likes, ratings, etc.) or qualitative data (polarity score, sentiment score, etc.) for achieving the movie recommendations. A novel approach is presented in this paper that not only provides topic-based (fiction, comedy, horror, etc.) movie recommendation but also uses both quantitative and qualitative data to achieve a true and relevant recommendation of a movie relevant to a topic. The used approach relies on SentiwordNet and tf-idf similarity measures to calculate the polarity score from user reviews, which represent the qualitative aspect of likeness of a movie. Similarly, three quantitative variables (such as likes, ratings, and votes) are used to get final a recommendation score. A fuzzy logic module decides the recommendation category based on this final recommendation score. The proposed approach uses a big data technology, “Hadoop” to handle data diversity and heterogeneity in an efficient manner. An Android application collaborates with a web-bot to use recommendation services and show topic-based recommendation to users. Full article

In the latest studies concerning the sentiment polarity of words, the authors mostly consider the positive and negative constructions, without paying too much attention to the neutral words, which can have, in fact, significant sentiment degrees. More precisely, not all the neutral words have zero positivity or negativity scores, some of them having quite important nonzero scores for these polarities. At this moment, in the literature, a word is considered neutral if its positive and negative scores are equal, which implies two possibilities: (1) zero positive and negative scores; (2) nonzero, but equal positive and negative scores. It is obvious that these cases represent two different categories of neutral words that must be treated separately by a sentiment analysis task. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study about the neutral words applied to English as is developed with the aid of SentiWordNet 3.0: the publicly available lexical resource for opinion mining. We designed our study in order to provide an accurate classification of the so-called “neutral words” described in terms of sentiment scores and using measures from neutrosophy theory. The intended scope is to fill the gap concerning the neutrality aspect by giving precise measurements for the words’ objectivity. Full article
