Dwellings built from rammed earth in historical contexts represent not only a heritage to be preserved but also buildings with a long service life that are still in use by the local population. Changes in urban dynamics and the revitalization of historic downtown areas have led to an increase in renovations of these buildings. However, in many cases, these projects are carried out using materials and techniques that are structurally incompatible and detrimental to sustainability. The aim of this study is to examine earthen residential architecture in the historical context of the Region of Northwest Murcia (Spain), the resources used in their construction, their building systems and their current condition. To this end, an analysis is proposed based on historical documentation, including an assessment of the costs and energy required for their construction, a visual inspection of the current condition of these buildings, and a study of the relevant building regulations. The study of their cladding, eaves, floor structures and partitions in their current state allows for an assessment of the extent of transformation they have undergone and their state of conservation, whilst the study of the regulations provides insight into recent interventions on these buildings. The results point to rammed earth as a technique that, in historic dwellings of various kinds, combined low economic and energy costs with acceptable durability, allowing them to remain in use several centuries later, albeit under the recent threat of interventions using incompatible materials that are shortening their lifespan. Marine sport fishing is an increasingly important socioeconomic activity in Mediterranean coastal regions, although its ecological implications and interactions with vulnerable taxa remain poorly understood. This study analyses shore-based marine sport fishing competitions conducted along the southeastern Spanish Mediterranean coast between 2019 and 2025 to characterise sport fishers, evaluate interactions with vulnerable species such as elasmobranchs, and assess the spatial and temporal evolution of catches. The methodology combined structured surveys, fieldwork, and catch data collection during organised fishing competitions held in Alicante and the Region of Murcia. A total of 425 surveys were analysed together with catch records obtained from the Puerto de Mazarrón Fishing Open Championship and local fishing competitions. Results showed that sport fishing activity is predominantly carried out by experienced male fishers maintaining high fishing frequency throughout the year. Many participants reported previous interactions with elasmobranchs, particularly batoids, although limited knowledge among the sport fishers regarding species identification and protected taxa was detected. Catch composition was dominated by a few coastal teleost species, while multivariate analyses revealed significant spatial and temporal variability among fishing sectors and years. Overall, organised sport fishing competitions demonstrate considerable potential as complementary tools for ecological monitoring and conservation in Mediterranean coastal ecosystems. Full article

Paprika is a spice obtained from the dehydration and grinding of red pepper fruits, primarily from the Capsicum annuum species. Its etymology comes from Slavic Balkanian languages and was adopted in Hungarian. The crop originated in America, where it was domesticated by pre-Columbian civilizations over 6000 years ago (specifically in present-day Mexico) for medicinal and culinary purposes. Following the Spanish arrival in the Americas in the 15th century, pepper was introduced first in Spain (Sevilla, Extremadura and Murcia) and later in the rest of the Old World. The agroclimatic conditions of different Mediterranean regions made it an essential crop, turning these regions into centers of production and giving this spice a sense of cultural identity. The purpose of this study lies in the technological and nutritional significance of paprika in the modern food industry, where it is demanded as a natural colorant, preservative and source of bioactive compounds, such as antioxidants and carotenoids. Despite its prevalence, the existing literature is often fragmented into specific disciplines. This article distinguishes itself by proposing a holistic approach expanding the study from its historical evolution to its socioeconomic impact, including its agronomic characteristics and industrial-scale production. It is recommended that the research community and producers focus on the sustainability of processing methods while preserving cultural authenticity, ensuring the preservation of the functional and culinary relevance of this spice. Introduction: Freshwater fish communities in Mediterranean basins have undergone profound changes over recent decades due to biological invasions, habitat alteration, and hydrological regulation. The Segura River basin (SE Spain), particularly in the Region of Murcia, represents a paradigmatic case of these transformations, with increasing pressures on native ichthyofauna and growing relevance for recreational fisheries. Objective: This study aims to provide an updated inventory of fish communities in the rivers and reservoirs of the Region of Murcia, assessing current composition, relative abundance, and conservation status. Methodology: Fish assemblages were surveyed during sampling campaigns conducted in autumn 2023, 2024 and 2025. Sampling sites included representative reservoirs and river reaches within the middle sector of the Segura River basin, focusing on areas of interest for recreational fishing. Passive fishing gears were used in reservoirs, while electrofishing was conducted in riverine habitats. Presence and relative abundance data were recorded for all detected taxa. Results: A total of 15 taxa were identified (8 in reservoirs and 15 in river reaches). Reservoir communities were almost entirely dominated by non-native invasive species, including Cyprinus carpio, Alburnus alburnus, Sander lucioperca, Micropterus salmoides, Lepomis gibbosus, and Gambusia holbrooki, with Luciobarbus sclateri as the only native species. Riverine sections of the main channel also showed a strong dominance of exotic taxa, with additional species such as Esox lucius, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Gobio lozanoi, and Pseudochondrostoma polylepis. Native species detected included L. sclateri (dominant), Anguilla anguilla, and Salariopsis fluviatilis, the latter showing a recent expansion likely linked to human-mediated introduction. Isolated tributaries hosted the most valuable assemblages, including populations of L. sclateri, Squalius tartessicus, and the endangered Valencia hispanica (recently unauthorized translocations into the Segura river basin). Conclusions: Current fish communities in the Region of Murcia reflect a marked ecological degradation compared to historical conditions, driven by the proliferation of non-native species and habitat alteration. Changes over the last 30 years have been particularly pronounced in reservoirs and regulated sections of the main river channel, where local extinction of the native S. tartessicus has also been detected. Only the headwaters of certain tributaries retain fish assemblages of notable conservation interest, highlighting their priority for management and protection. Full article

Traditional European craft practices face dual pressures: the erosion of tacit knowledge held by aging practitioners, and the risk of cultural homogenization through uninformed digital adoption. This paper presents a comparative analysis of a structured design pilot conducted across five Representative Craft Instances (RCIs): glassblowing, tapestry, marble/silversmithing, porcelain, and woodcarving within the Horizon Europe CRAEFT project. Drawing on co-creative workshops, motion capture pipelines, physically based rendering (PBR), interactive simulation, and additive manufacturing, we analyze how context-specific digital tools performed as mediators rather than modernizers across heterogeneous craft domains. Cross-domain analysis reveals that digital tools achieve cultural legitimacy only when introduced through co-creative, practitioner-led cycles; that gesture and tacit knowledge are transferable via structured computational pipelines; and that methodological portability, not workflow replication, is the appropriate model for cross-context scaling. Implications are discussed for sustainable heritage policy, design education, and the development of craft-sensitive digital infrastructure in Europe. A cross-RCI comparative assessment matrix evaluates all five domains across seven analytical dimensions: practitioner adoption, perceived usefulness, cultural legitimacy, technical maturity, sustainability impact, transferability potential, and educational effectiveness. Finally, practitioner reflective accounts from participating designers and craftspeople are presented to ground the analytical findings empirically. Full article

The rapid expansion of solar photovoltaics is intensifying competition for land and highlighting the need for scalable energy solutions that can be integrated into existing power systems without displacing agricultural activity. Once the technical and agronomic viability of agrivoltaic configurations has been demonstrated at field scale, a critical next step toward their market consolidation is the assessment of their deployment potential at regional scales from an energy systems and grid integration perspective. This study presents a GIS-based framework to evaluate the large-scale implementation of vertically integrated agrivoltaic systems, using vineyard landscapes in the Region of Murcia (southeastern Spain) as a representative case study. The analysis combines high-resolution land-use data, crop distribution, regulatory constraints on grid connection distances, and existing electrical infrastructure to quantify installable capacity, energy production, self-consumption potential, and grid accessibility. Results indicate that vertically mounted bifacial PV systems could reach up to 7.06 GWp, generating approximately 11.84 TWh/year, while revealing a pronounced spatial mismatch between optimal agrivoltaic production sites and current grid connection points. This distance-dependent distribution highlights the need for differentiated deployment strategies, balancing local self-consumption, grid reinforcement, and centralized injection. Beyond the specific case examined, the proposed approach provides a transferable framework for energy system planning, supporting grid-aware agrivoltaic deployment in diverse regions and regulatory contexts. Gender-based violence constitutes a major public health and social concern, with particularly complex implications in structurally vulnerable contexts such as rural settings. However, empirical evidence regarding the specific profile and risk perception of women experiencing gender-based violence in small municipalities remains limited. The aim of this study was to analyze the sociodemographic characteristics of women victims of gender-based violence residing in small rural municipalities and to examine their associations with mental health indicators and perceived risk of future violence. The sample comprised 30 women receiving support at a Specialized Care Centre for Victims of Gender-Based Violence (CAVI) serving three small municipalities in the Vega Media region (Region of Murcia, Spain). Standardized measures of depression, anxiety, and stress were administered, together with an assessment of perceived risk. The findings suggest a specific sociodemographic profile characterized by moderate levels of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and generally low perceived risk. Women without children reported higher levels of psychological distress and perceived risk than those with children, although these differences should be interpreted with caution given the sample size. Overall, these findings provide preliminary insights into the characteristics and risk perception of women experiencing gender-based violence in rural settings and highlight the need for context-sensitive prevention and intervention strategies. This study explored pre-service teachers’ views on the use of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) in the production of misinformation, addressing the potential challenges posed by deepfakes generated by these online resources. A quantitative approach was used; 133 pre-service teachers participated in the study, all of them were enrolled in primary education degree programmes in the Region of Murcia, Spain. The results indicated a clear awareness of the risks posed by these digital tools in the generation of deepfakes. Respondents became aware of the potential threats this may pose on the internet, which can be further exacerbated when disseminated in educational environments. Recognising the relevance of pre-service teachers’ concerns can help educators and educational administrations take steps to limit Gen AI in accordance with ethical parameters and thus reduce the spread of misinformation. In social science teaching and learning, further research is needed to equip students with the essential skills to distinguish between accurate and inaccurate information. For all these reasons, it seems essential to improve research in media literacy education for the application of identification skills used in assessment processes. These improvements can take the form of evidence-based approaches, such as AI literacy programmes or media literacy modules, to facilitate student learning and ensure better quality education. The large-scale deployment of photovoltaic (PV) systems increasingly faces land-use conflicts, particularly in regions with high environmental sensitivity resulting from intensive urban development. Consequently, decision-makers require transparent, spatially explicit tools to identify suitable areas for utility-scale PV installations (>100 kWp). This study addresses these challenges through the application of a Geographic Information System (GIS) to locate optimal sites for solar farms along the coastal zone of the Region of Murcia (southeastern Spain). First, the research characterizes the territorial context and systematically reviews the European, national, and regional regulatory frameworks to identify relevant legal and environmental constraints. These constraints are translated into thematic layers within the GIS environment and progressively applied to exclude unsuitable land through spatial editing and overlay analyses. The remaining feasible areas are subsequently evaluated according to their photovoltaic potential using publicly available solar resource data. The results show that nearly one quarter of the coastal territory is legally and environmentally suitable for PV deployment. Furthermore, due to the favourable geographical conditions of this Spanish region, the annual photovoltaic potential along the coastal zone reaches nearly 48,000 GWh, which would not only meet the Region of Murcia’s annual electricity demand (approximately 8000 GWh) but also supply neighbouring areas in southeastern Spain. Background: We sought to analyze the geographic distribution of HFE p.C282Y (homeostatic iron regulator c.845G>A; rs1800562) allele frequencies in Iberia. Methods: We analyzed published population/control cohorts of 50 or more subjects in mainland Spain and mainland Portugal and determined whether or not the p.C282Y genotypes in each cohort deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) proportions. We defined combined p.C282Y allele frequencies from Spain and Portugal as representative of Iberia. We computed linear regressions (Pearson’s correlations) of allele frequencies vs. latitudes and longitudes of cohort recruitment sites, defined significant regressions as allele frequency gradients, and mapped regional allele frequencies. Results: There were 34 Iberian cohorts: 25 Spanish (12,297 subjects; 11 autonomous communities) and 9 Portuguese (1024 subjects; five administrative regions). p.C282Y genotypes in one of 34 cohorts (2.9%) deviated significantly from HWE proportions. Aggregate allele frequency in Iberia was 0.0292 (778/26,642) [95% confidence interval: 0.0272, 0.0313]. The correlation of allele frequencies with latitude in Iberia was significant (r34 = 0.4184; p = 0.0138). The correlation of allele frequencies with longitude was not significant (r34 = 0.0014; p = 0.9936). The range of 16 regional allele frequencies in Iberia was 0.0068 (Murcia) to 0.5000 (Galicia). Frequencies were highest in regions adjacent to the north and northwest coasts (Cantabria, Galicia, Norte) and lowest in the south (Algarve, Murcia). Conclusions: There is a significant decreasing linear north-to-south gradient of HFE p.C282Y allele frequencies in Iberia. p.C282Y allele frequencies are highest in regions adjacent to the north and northwest coasts. This study examines the historical relationship between water management and epidemic diseases in the Region of Murcia (Southeast Spain) between the 16th and 19th centuries. It focuses on two major pathologies—yellow fever and cholera—which, despite differing transmission mechanisms (vector-borne and waterborne, respectively), both depended critically on aquatic and semi-endorheic ecosystems. By analysing archival records, parish death registers, and historical reports of floods and droughts, the paper demonstrates how inadequate hydraulic infrastructure and poor sanitation practices intensified epidemic outbreaks. At least five large-scale epidemic episodes (1804, 1834, 1854, 1865, and 1885) coincided with extreme hydrological events, indicating a clear correlation between water governance failures and mortality peaks. Conversely, periods of effective state intervention through regulation and infrastructure maintenance reveal a marked reduction in disease incidence. The results highlight that water governance was not only a technical challenge but also a socio-political determinant of public health. These historical insights remain relevant today, particularly as climate change exacerbates water-related risks worldwide. Understanding the long-term interactions between ecology, infrastructure, and disease contributes to current debates on environmental resilience and sustainable management of water resources as key components of collective health and social stability. The invasive red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, RPW) poses a severe threat to heritage palm collections across the Mediterranean Region, necessitating robust protection strategies. This study addresses the urgent challenge of safeguarding the Spanish Phoenix Collection at Miguel Hernandez University (EPSO) and the Orihuela Palmetum by analyzing the efficacy of applied Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies over a ten-year period (2014–2024). Monitoring and treatment protocols included targeted chemical, biological, and cultural controls, and were benchmarked against infestation progression data, climatic trends, and comparative case studies from Murcia, Elche, Nice, and Palermo. Results indicate that a proactive, multi-component IPM strategy, especially when coupled with probabilistic risk models, can significantly improve survival and recovery indicators in Phoenix taxa, although species-specific susceptibility to RPW was a major differentiating factor. Comparative analysis reveals common regional patterns in R. ferrugineus management but underscores the critical need for collection-specific, resource-sensitive protocols for high-value heritage plants, demonstrating that evidence-based best practices and coordinated monitoring are essential for effective heritage palm conservation amid continuous pest pressure. This study investigates the valorisation of lemon industry by-products as carbon sources to produce poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) using the halophilic archaeon Haloferax mediterranei. The resulting polymer (HFX PHBV) was supplemented with nucleating agents (orotic acid, boron nitride, and theobromine) and compared with a commercial PHBV grade (Enmat Y1000) under identical conditions. Fermentation strategies were optimised by varying the lemon by-product concentration, inoculum size, and nutrient stoichiometry (C:N:P ratios), followed by scaleup in a 2 L bioreactor. A 11% (v/v) lemon by-product combined with a 5% (v/v) inoculum yielded the highest productivity under minimal medium conditions (2.127 g/L PHBV), while enriched media further enhanced the polymer accumulation (up to 3.250 g/L PHBV). A comparative characterisation of HFX PHBV and Enmat Y1000, using NMR, TGA, MFR, DSC, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and DMA, revealed that HFX PHBV exhibited lower crystallinity, increased flexibility, and a high hydroxyvalerate content (27.4%), which conferred improved ductility. Investigation of nucleating agents demonstrated that orotic acid was the most effective at enhancing the crystallisation kinetics. Overall, this study demonstrates an efficient PHBV production process based on waste valorisation, yielding a biopolymer with competitive physicochemical properties relative to a commercial standard, and provides integrated solutions to the global challenges of plastic pollution and food waste. Background/objective: Inappropriate antibiotic use in paediatric populations is a leading driver of antimicrobial resistance. In the Murcia Region, Spain, the Purapi program promotes the rational use of antibiotics among children under 3 years of age. This study aimed to analyse antibiotic use in this age group during the pandemic period (2020–2023) and to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the effectiveness of a multifaceted program promoting appropriate antibiotic use. Methods: A retrospective, multicentre, population-based study was conducted in primary care using data from 2019 to 2024. Systemic antibiotic use (ATC J01 group) among children under three years was measured as defined daily doses per 1000 inhabitants per day (DHD). Differences across years and healthcare areas were assessed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni correction. Results: Antibiotic consumption decreased by 49% in 2020 compared to 2019, coinciding with the implementation of national COVID-19 containment measures. From 2021 onward, a gradual increase was observed; however, by 2024, levels remained 9% below pre-pandemic values. Penicillins account for 75% of prescriptions, mainly amoxicillin and amoxicillin–clavulanic acid. While variability across healthcare areas decreased during the pandemic, variability among primary care centres increased. Conclusions: The pandemic resulted in a temporary reduction in antibiotic use, followed by a partial rebound. Ongoing educational and stewardship interventions within the Purapi framework were instrumental in maintaining rational prescribing and may have contributed to maintaining reduced antibiotic consumption among children under three years of age during and after the pandemic. Strengthening and harmonising these initiatives is essential to ensure consistent paediatric antibiotic stewardship in primary care. Full article

The effects of global change on the planet are undeniable, especially in terms of climate change, which is alarming in regions with water resource deficiencies, such as arid and semi-arid territories. One such territory is the Region of Murcia (Spain), in the southeast of which lies the Campo de Cartagena region. It is place where rainwater has historically been essential for settlement and traditional agricultural and livestock farming, giving rise to a valuable, now-forgotten water heritage. Through historical, spatial, climatic, and statistical analysis, we aim to demonstrate the significant implementation of these infrastructures in the study area and identify the causes of their abandonment, despite the continued increase in demand for water by all economic sectors, especially the agricultural, urban and tourism sectors. The results demonstrate the existence of five traditional runoff management infrastructures (cisterns, dams, runoff water channels, terracing and benching), and that the effects of global change have been decisive in their neglect, especially those related to climate change and land use modifications, in addition to increased demographic and socioeconomic pressure.
