As the exponential growth in advanced compute workloads drives intra-datacenter interconnects to ever increasing bitrates, optical networking equipment has risen to the challenge by shifting from NRZ signaling to bandwidth efficient modulation methods such as PAM4. As these modulation schemes introduce an inherent SNR penalty, maintaining low bit error rates (BER) forces optical links to operate at significantly higher optical powers. However, increasing the optical power leads to photodetectors reaching one of their fundamental bottlenecks caused by the space-charge effect, limiting their ability to provide a high-speed response under high-power illumination. This work presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of a waveguide-integrated photodiode with dual optical inputs (DIPD) designed to overcome this limitation. Specifically, we demonstrate that combining a dual-fed architecture with targeted cross-sectional geometric optimizations effectively distributes the photocurrent density to delay the onset of space-charge saturation. Experimental validation demonstrates a high responsivity of ≈0.91 [A/W] (for O-band wavelengths) and a large electro-optic bandwidth (EOBW) of ≈58 [GHz], all under high-power illumination and CMOS driving voltages. Functional polymers are designed to enhance the evaporative cooling capacity of sports clothing ensembles, though little is known about how they alter the material properties of commonly used fabrics. The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of a commercially available textile finish treatment (HeiQ Smart Temp TM) on the structural, thermal, and moisture management properties of synthetic (SYN; 100% polyester) and blended (BLEND; 47% lyocell, 46% cotton, 7% elastane) fabrics. Structural (fabric mass, thickness, bulk density, relative porosity), thermal (air permeability, water vapour permeability, water vapour resistance) and moisture management properties (wetting time, spreading speed, wetting radius, absorption, vertical wicking rate) were assessed and compared between treated and untreated samples. Significant improvements (p < 0.05) in air permeability (SYN: Δ 26.0 mm.s−1; BLEND: Δ 61.6 mm·s−1), wetting time (SYN: Δ 0.3 s; BLEND: Δ 0.3 s), and spreading speed (BLEND: Δ 1.1 mm·s−1; SYN: no change) were recorded following treatment. Non-significant changes in water vapour permeability (SYN: Δ 0.1; BLEND: Δ 0.1), water vapour resistance (SYN: Δ 0.7 Pa·m2W−1; BLEND: Δ 0.4 Pa·m2W−1) and vertical wicking (BLEND: Δ 6.1 mm·s−1; SYN: no change) were also observed following treatment. Though not all material properties improved, this study provides evidence that the functional polymer treatment can enhance the evaporative cooling capacity of sports clothing fabrics. Future research is needed to understand how these results translate to physiological, perceptual, and performance-based effects in wearer trials during exercise. Full article

Silicon–germanium (Si-Ge) avalanche photodiodes (APDs), fully compatible with complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) processes, are critical devices for high-speed optical communication. In this work, we propose a three-terminal Si-Ge APD on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate based on device simulation studies. The proposed APD employs a separate absorption and multiplication structure, achieving an ultra-low breakdown voltage of 6.8 V. The device operates in the O-band, with optical signals laterally coupled into the Ge absorption layer via a silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide. At a bias of 2 V, the APD exhibits a responsivity of 0.85 A/W; under a bias of 6.6 V, it achieves a 3-dB optoelectronic (OE) bandwidth of 51 GHz, a direct current gain of 27, and a maximum gain–bandwidth product (GBP) of 1377 GHz. High-speed performance is further confirmed through eye-diagram simulations at 100 Gbps non-return-to-zero (NRZ) and 200 Gbps four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4). These results clearly show the strong potential of the proposed APD for optical communication and interconnect applications under stringent power and supply voltage constraints. Full article

With the rise of 6G, the exponential growth of data traffic, the proliferation of emerging applications, and the ubiquity of smart devices, the demand for spectral resources is unprecedented. Terahertz communication (100 GHz–3 THz) plays a key role in alleviating spectrum scarcity through ultra-broadband transmission. In this study, terahertz optical carrier-based systems are employed, where fiber-optic components are used to generate the optical signals, and the signal is transmitted via direct detection in the receiver side, without relying on fiber-optic transmission. In these systems, deep learning-based equalization effectively compensates for nonlinear distortions, while probability shaping (PS) enhances system capacity under modulation constraints. However, the probability distribution of signals processed by PS varies with amplitude, making it challenging to extract useful information from the minority class, which in turn limits the effectiveness of nonlinear equalization. Furthermore, in IM-DD systems, optical multipath interference (MPI) noise introduces signal-dependent amplitude jitter after direct detection, degrading system performance. To address these challenges, we propose a lightweight neural network equalizer assisted by the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and a clustering method. Applying SMOTE prior to the equalizer mitigates training difficulties arising from class imbalance, while the low-complexity clustering algorithm after the equalizer identifies edge jitter levels for decision-making. This joint approach compensates for both nonlinear distortion and jitter-related decision errors. Based on this algorithm, we conducted a 3.75 Gbaud W-band PAM4 wireless transmission experiment over 300 m at Fudan University’s Handan campus, achieving a bit error rate of 1.32 × 10−3, which corresponds to a 70.7% improvement over conventional schemes. Compared to traditional equalizers, the proposed new equalizer reduces algorithm complexity by 70.6% and training sequence length by 33%, while achieving the same performance. These advantages highlight its significant potential for future optical carrier-based wireless communication systems. Full article

The enzymatic resolution of chiral sofosbuvir precursors is a critical step in producing stereoisomerically pure ProTide drugs, essential for their therapeutic efficacy. In this study, a mutated phosphotriesterase (W131M-PTE) was immobilized onto various polymeric macroporous beads, including commercial immobead 150P (IB), modified (IB-EDA and IB-MTD), and synthetic polyacrylamide (PAM) beads functionalized with glutaraldehyde (PAM-GA) or 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (PAM-EDC). The immobilization efficiency, stability, and reusability of the enzyme were systematically evaluated. Among the tested supports, PAM-EDC demonstrated superior performance, retaining high enzymatic activity across multiple cycles and achieving a 92% yield of the (Sp)-diastereomer. The study highlights the potential of immobilized W131M-PTE as a cost-effective and scalable solution for chiral separation in pharmaceutical manufacturing, with implications for broader applications in ProTide drug production. Chlorella is a rich source of nutrients. In addition to its nutritional value, it exhibits versatile biological activities. New strains have been extensively identified and investigated in recent years to expand the potential of Chlorella. The accurate measurement of pulse-amplitude-modulated (PAM) fluorometry parameters and effective microalgal cell lysis are foundational for advanced studies of novel Chlorella species. In this study, ribosomal small subunit (SSU)-internal transcribed spacer (ITS) phylogenetic analysis and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) secondary structure analysis were employed to identify a new Chlorella species. The dark adaptation time, the duration of the saturation pulse, the intensity of actinic light, and the duration of actinic light exposure for PAM fluorometry measurements were optimized. Different conditions of ultrasonication and high-pressure homogenization (HPH) for microalgal cell lysis were compared. Chlorella vulgaris K-01 was identified. The suitable duration for dark adaptation, the saturation pulse, and the actinic light were 15 min, 200 milliseconds, and 30 s, respectively. The suitable intensity of actinic light was 191 μE/(m2·s). For microalgal cell lysis, HPH could achieve 98.65% cell lysis efficiency at 30 kpsi (207 MPa), whereas ultrasonication attained an efficiency of 45.47% (300 W for 30 min). These results facilitate further study on the physiology and the composition of Chlorella vulgaris K-01. Full article

Wound healing is a complex process involving stages such as hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. In this context, polymers are useful materials for wound treatment. This research used the Casting method to prepare films from 2% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) gels. Subsequently, PVP films were grafted with maleic acid (MA) (PVP-g-PAM) to load naringin (NA) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in order to obtain a material with pH responsiveness and antibacterial properties. The modified PVP-g-PAM films were prepared using gamma-ray irradiation through a pre-irradiation oxidative method at a dose rate of 13.7 kGy h−1, doses ranging from 10 to 25 kGy, and reaction times from 50 to 80 min in a bath of water, all samples at 50 °C, and a fixed monomer concentration of 15% (w/v) MA in THF. The conditions that yielded the highest percentage of grafting were 20 kGy and 60 min. NA was loaded at a fixed concentration of 5%. Data release showed that the films follow the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model. Synthesis of AgNPs was performed by γ-ray irradiation–reduction (10 and 30 kGy), using PVP as a stabilizer. AgNPs showed in vitro effectiveness against E. coli and S. aureus. Films were characterized by FTIR-ATR, TGA, DSC, mechanical properties, swelling index, and contact angle. Further studies must be implemented; however, the results up now suggest that PVP-g-PAM loaded with NA and AgNPs can be useful as a potential wound dressing. Full article

This review article investigates the current status and advances in Ku-band gallium nitride (GaN) high-electron mobility transistor (HEMT) high-power amplifiers (HPAs), which are critical for satellite communications, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems, and military radar applications. The demand for high-frequency, high-power amplifiers is growing, driven by the global expansion of high-speed data communication and enhanced national security requirements. First, we compare the main GaN HEMT process technologies employed in Ku-band HPA development, categorizing the HPAs into monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) and internally matched power amplifier modules (IM-PAMs) and examining their respective characteristics. Then, by reviewing the literature, we explore design topologies, major issues like oscillation prevention and bias circuits, and heat sink technologies for thermal management. Our findings indicate that silicon carbide (SiC) substrates with gate lengths of 0.25 μm and 0.15 μm are predominantly used, with ongoing developments enabling MMICs and IM-PAMs to achieve up to 100 W output power and 30% power-added efficiency. Notably, the performance of MMIC power amplifiers is advancing more rapidly than that of IM-PAMs, highlighting MMICs as a promising direction for achieving higher efficiency and integration in future Ku-band applications. This paper can provide insights into the overall key technologies for Ku-band GaN HPA design and future development directions. Full article

We present a novel photon-acid diffusion method to integrate polymer microlenses (MLs) on a four-channel, high-speed photo-receiver consisting of normal-incidence germanium (Ge) p-i-n photodiodes (PDs) fabricated on a 200 mm Si substrate. For a 29 µm diameter PD capped with a 54 µm diameter ML, its dark current, responsivity, 3 dB bandwidth (BW), and effective aperture size at −3 V bias and 850 nm wavelength are measured to be 138 nA, 0.6 A/W, 21.4 GHz, and 54 µm, respectively. The enlarged aperture size significantly decouples the tradeoff between aperture size and BW and enhances the optical fiber misalignment tolerance from ±5 µm to ±15 µm to ease the module packaging precision. The sensitivity of the photo-receiver is measured to be −9.2 dBm at 25.78 Gb/s with a bit error rate of 10−12 using non-return-to-zero (NRZ) transmission. Reliability tests are performed, and the results show that the fabricated Ge PDs integrated with polymer MLs pass the GR-468 reliability assurance standard. The demonstrated photo-receiver, a first of its kind to the best of our knowledge, features decent performance, high yield, high throughput, low cost, and compatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication processes, and may be further applied to 400 Gb/s pulse-amplitude modulation four-level (PAM4) communication. An investigation was carried out to study the influence of two types of anti-washout admixtures (AWAs) on the performance of underwater concrete, specifically, workability and washout resistance. The tested AWAs were hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) as nonionic AWAs and carboxymethyl starch (CMS) and polyanionic cellulose (PAC) as anionic AWAs. Rheological properties (slump and slump flow), washout resistance, and compressive strength were measured to evaluate the properties of the fresh and hardened concrete. The results indicate that anionic AWAs are more effective at improving workability and strength than nonionic AWAs in anti-washout underwater concrete. When the nonionic AWA dosage exceeded 0.3% (W/C = 0.45), the fluidity and air content were negatively impacted. Additionally, nonionic AWAs more readily alter the morphological structure of cement paste, affecting cement particle hydration and underwater concrete properties. Regarding the mechanical properties, compared with those of concrete without AWAs and with nonionic AWAs, the 28-day compressive strength of concrete with anionic AWAs reached 37 MPa, an increase of 151% and 131%, respectively. Compared with nonionic AWAs, concrete with anionic AWAs is more stable. Full article

This paper presents a highly efficient 5G New-Radio (NR) RF power amplifier module (PAM). The n77 PAM consists of a high-voltage differential-topology 2 μm GaAs HBT power amplifier, a CMOS controller, a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) switch, an integrated passive device (IPD) bandpass filter, a low-noise amplifier (LNA), and a bi-directional coupler. This PAM generates a saturation output power of 32.7 dBm including the loss of the SOI switch and output filter. The designed n77 PAM is tested with a commercial envelope tracker IC (ET-IC). The designed PAM with an ET-IC achieves an ACLR of −37 dBc at a 27 dBm output power with a DFT-s-OFDM QPSK 100 MHz NR signal and saves a dc power consumption of 950 mW compared to the APT mode. For the CP-OFDM 256QAM with the most stringent EVM requirements, it achieves an EVM of 1.22% at 23 dBm and saves 640 mW compared to the APT mode. Full article

The aim of this work was to develop sustainable patches for wound application, using the biopolymer starch, created using a low-cost 3D printing PAM device. The composition of a starch gel was optimized for PAM extrusion: corn starch 10% w/w, β-glucan water suspension (filler, 1% w/w), glycerol (plasticizer, 29% w/w), and water 60% w/w. The most suitable 3D printing parameters were optimized as well (nozzle size 0.8 mm, layer height 0.2 mm, infill 100%, volumetric flow rate 3.02 mm3/s, and print speed 15 mm/s). The suitable conditions for post-printing drying were set at 37 °C for 24 h. The obtained patch was homogenous but with low mechanical resistance. To solve this problem, the starch gel was extruded over an alginate support, which, after drying, becomes an integral part of the product, constituting the backing layer of the final formulation. This approach significantly improved the physicochemical and post-printing properties of the final bilayer patch, showing suitable mechanical properties such as elastic modulus (3.80 ± 0.82 MPa), strength (0.92 ± 0.08 MPa), and deformation at break (50 ± 1%). The obtained results suggest the possibility of low-cost production of patches for wound treatment by additive manufacturing technology. Full article

As the investigation indexes of low-temperature viscoelastic properties of polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) are unclear at present, in this paper, the creep stiffness (S), creep rate (m), low-temperature continuous classification temperature (TC), ΔTC, m/S, relaxation time (λ), and dissipation energy ratio (Wdt/Wst) were taken as a comparison sequence. The maximum flexural tensile strain (εB) of porous asphalt mixture (PAM) in a low-temperature bending test was selected as a reference sequence. Gray relational analysis was used to investigate the PMA’s low-temperature viscoelastic properties based on a bending beam rheometer (BBR). The results show certain contradictions in investigating the low-temperature properties of PMA when only considering the low-temperature deformation capacity or the stress relaxation capacity. The modulus and relaxation capacity should be considered when selecting the investigation indexes of the low-temperature viscoelastic properties of PMA. When rheological method is used to evaluate the low-temperature of polymer modified asphalt, TC and m/S are preferred. When only S or m is contradictory, m should be preferred. ΔTC can determine whether the low-temperature performance of PMA is dominated by S or m. The result can better guide the construction of asphalt pavement in areas with low temperatures. Asphalt can be selected quickly and accurately to avoid the waste of resources. Full article

Lightweight, high-temperature-resistant carbon-bonded carbon fiber (CBCF) composites with excellent thermal insulation properties are desirable materials for thermal protection systems in military and aerospace applications. Here, glucose was introduced into the polyacrylamide hydrogel to form the glucose-polyacrylamide (Glu-PAM) hydrogel. The CBCF composites were prepared using the Glu-PAM hydrogel as a brand-new binder, and the synergistic effect between glucose and acrylamide was investigated. The results showed the Glu-PAM hydrogel could limit the foaming of glucose and enhance the carbon yield of glucose. Meanwhile, the dopamine-modified chopped carbon fiber could be uniformly mixed by high-speed shearing to form a slurry with the Glu-PAM hydrogel. Finally, the slurry was successfully extruded and molded to prepare CBCF composites with a density of 0.158~0.390 g cm−3 and excellent thermal insulation performance and good mechanical properties. The compressive strength of CBCF composites with a density of 0.158 g cm−3 in the Z direction is 0.18 MPa, and the thermal conductivity in the Z direction at 25 °C and 1200 °C is 0.10 W m−1 k−1 and 0.20 W m−1 k−1, respectively. This study provided an efficient, environment-friendly, and cost-effective strategy for the preparation of CBCF composites. Full article

Streptococcus suis is an important swine bacterial pathogen that activates macrophages to secrete inflammatory cytokines. Primary porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) are inconvenient to obtain, but it is unknown whether immortalized PAM-Tang cells can replace them as a better cell model for the study of the interaction between S. suis and macrophages. In this study, the phagocytic integrity, polarization, and pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion of PAM-Tang cells were confirmed by live-cell imaging, electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and ELISA. Interestingly, the S. suis serotype 9 avirulent strain W7119 induced higher levels of adhesion and pro-inflammatory cytokines in PAM-Tang cells than the S. suis serotype 2 virulent strain 700794. Prolonged incubation with S. suis caused more cytotoxic cell damage, and the virulent strain induced higher levels of cytotoxicity to PAM-Tang cells. The virulent strain also induced higher levels of apoptosis in PAM-Tang cells, as shown by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. In addition, it is the first report of virulent and avirulent S. suis inducing PAM-Tang polarization towards pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages and p53- and caspase-dependent apoptosis in PAMs. Taken together, this study contributes to a better understand of interactions between macrophages and S. suis isolates of different virulence, and confirms that PAM-Tang cells provide a long-term, renewable resource for investigating macrophage infections with bacteria.
