Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Patient-Reported Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Hip Labral Repair or Reconstruction

This study evaluates the relationship between preoperative cartilage quality, measured by T2 mapping, and patient-reported outcomes following labral tear treatment. We retrospectively reviewed patients aged 14–50 who underwent primary hip arthroscopy with either labral repair or reconstruction. Preoperative T2 values of femoral, acetabular, and labral tissue were assessed from MRI by blinded reviewers. International Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT-12) scores were collected preoperatively and up to two years postoperatively. Associations between T2 values and iHOT-12 scores were analyzed using univariate mixed linear models. Twenty-nine patients were included (mean age of 32.5 years, BMI 24 kg/m2, 48.3% female, and 22 repairs). Across all patients, higher T2 values were associated with higher iHOT-12 scores at baseline and early postoperative timepoints (three months for cartilage and six months for labrum; p < 0.05). Lower T2 values were associated with higher 12- and 24-month iHOT-12 scores across all structures (p < 0.001). Similar trends were observed within the repair and reconstruction subgroups, with delayed negative associations correlating with worse tissue quality. T2 mapping showed time-dependent correlations with iHOT-12 scores, indicating that worse cartilage or labral quality predicts poorer long-term outcomes. These findings support the utility of T2 mapping as a preoperative tool for prognosis in hip preservation surgery. Full article

Violence in Healthcare Workers Is Associated with Disordered Eating

Workplace violence (WV) is a ubiquitous risk in healthcare settings where it has been associated with physical and mental health problems. We aimed to investigate the relationship between the violence experienced by healthcare workers (HCWs) and the presence of eating disorders (EDs). During routine health surveillance, 1215 HCWs were questioned about their experience of WV and the short version of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-QS) was used to assess their eating behaviors. Sleep quality, stress, and the presence of common mental illnesses and metabolic disorders were also evaluated. HCWs who had experienced one or more assaults in the previous year had a significantly higher EDE score than their colleagues. In a multivariate model, WV doubled the risk of EDs (odds ratio 2.33, confidence intervals 95% 1.30; 4.18, p < 0.01). A very significant association was observed between common mental disorders and EDs (OR 1.13, CI 95% 1.04; 1.23, p < 0.01), while low sleep quality almost reached a significant level (OR 1.09, CI 95% 0.99; 1.20). The higher frequency of EDs among workers subjected to violence may result from maladaptive coping mechanisms used when stress and mental health problems caused by WV lead to compensatory overeating. However, reverse causation, where WV is induced by stigmatization, cannot be ruled out. Because of the considerable impact EDs have on physical and mental health, productivity, and patient care, healthcare organizations should adopt programs designed to prevent these disorders in HCWs. Albumin-binding agents enhance tumor uptake of radiopharmaceuticals targeting prostate-specific membrane antigens (PSMAs) in radiotherapy. We synthesized PSMA-NARI-56, a molecule with both PSMA targeting activity and albumin-binding moiety, labeled with 177Lu as the therapeutic agent. The aim of this study was to determine the specific binding of 177Lu-PSMA-NARI-56 towards PSMA, assess its biodistribution, and evaluate therapeutic effectiveness by tumor-bearing mice. The effect of 177Lu-PSMA-NARI-56 viability of PSMA-positive cell (LNCaP) was evaluated. Biodistribution and endoradiotherapy studies were utilized to determine the distribution, targeting, and anti-tumor efficacy by tumor-bearing mice identified by 111In-PSMA-NARI-56. 177Lu-PSMA-NARI-56 exhibited a significant impact on the viability of the LNCaP cell. Biodistribution results revealed the maximum tumor uptake of 177Lu-PSMA-NARI-56 occurring within 24 h, reaching 40.56 ± 10.01%ID/g. In radionuclide therapy, at 58 days post-injection (p.i.), 177Lu-PSMA-NARI-56 demonstrated superior tumor inhibition (98%) compared to 177Lu-PSMA-617 (58%), and the mouse survival rate after 90 days of radiotherapy (90%) was also higher than that of 177Lu-PSMA-617 (30%) in LNCaP tumor-bearing mice. In the PSMA-positive animal model, 177Lu-PSMA-NARI-56 shows higher potential radiotheranostic and prolonged accumulation (identify by 111In-PSMA-NARI-56/nanoSPECT/CT image), offering the potential for improved treatment effectiveness and increased survival rates when compared to 177Lu-PSMA-617. The growing interest in probiotic bacteria within the food industry is driven by their recognized health benefits for consumers. However, preserving their therapeutic viability and stability during gastrointestinal transit remains a formidable challenge. Hence, this research aimed to enhance the viability of Lactobacillus reuteri through microencapsulation using a binary polysaccharide mixture composed of low acyl gellan gum (LAG), high acyl gellan gum (HAG), and calcium for the microencapsulation of L. reuteri. To achieve this, the Box–Behnken design was applied, targeting the optimization of L. reuteri microencapsulated to withstand simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The microcapsules were crafted using the internal ionic gelation method, and optimization was performed using response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box–Behnken design. The model demonstrated robust predictive power, with R2 values exceeding 95% and a lack of fit greater than p > 0.05. Under optimized conditions—0.88% (w/v) LAG, 0.43% (w/v) HAG, and 24.44 mM Ca—L. reuteri reached a viability of 97.43% following the encapsulation process. After 4 h of exposure to simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and intestinal fluid (SIF), the encapsulated cells maintained a viable count of 8.02 log CFU/mL. These promising results underscore the potential of biopolymer-based microcapsules, such as those containing LAG and HAG, as an innovative approach for safeguarding probiotics during gastrointestinal passage, paving the way for new probiotic-enriched food products. Effect of a Nutritional Education Intervention on Sports Nutrition Knowledge, Dietary Intake, and Body Composition in Female Athletes: A Pilot Study

Background/Objectives: Studies have reported that female athletes often exhibit low levels of nutritional knowledge and inadequate dietary intake to meet their nutritional needs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a nutritional education intervention on nutrition knowledge, dietary intake, and body composition in female handball players (n = 45; age, 17.6 ± 2.1 years). Methods: A quasi-experimental intervention design was implemented, consisting of a 3-week educational program delivered through six in-person sessions led by a registered dietitian. Nutrition knowledge, dietary intake, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and anthropometric and body composition measurements were assessed. Results: Nutrition knowledge levels were significantly higher both immediately post-intervention and three months later compared to baseline (p < 0.05, ES > 0.8). A total of 36 participants completed a 3-day dietary record at baseline and at follow-up. Initial assessments revealed insufficient energy (31 kcal/kg/day) and carbohydrate intake (3.0 g/kg/day) and a high intake of total fats (1.4 g/kg/day). During follow-up, a significant decrease in the consumption of foods rich in sugar was observed (p = 0.0272). A total of 82.2% of the players needed to improve their adherence to the Mediterranean diet. No significant changes were found in Mediterranean diet adherence or body composition following the intervention. Conclusions: The nutritional education intervention significantly improved athletes’ nutritional knowledge and significantly decreased their consumption of sugary foods; however, further studies are needed to evaluate its impact on dietary intake and body composition, considering the study’s limitations. Eurasian aspen (Populus tremula L.) is a tree species with recognised ecological and economic importance for both natural and plantation forests. For the fast cloning of selected aspen genotypes, the method of plant propagation through in vitro culture (micropropagation) is often recommended. The efficiency of this method is related to the use of shoot-inducing chemical growth regulators, among which cytokinins, a type of plant hormone, dominate. Although cytokinins can inhibit rooting, this effect is avoided by using cytokinin-free media. This study sought to identify concentrations and combinations of growth regulators that would stimulate one type of P. tremula organogenesis (either shoot or root formation) without inhibiting the other. The investigated growth regulators included cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), auxin transport inhibitor 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA), auxins indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), gibberellin biosynthesis inhibitor paclobutrazol (PBZ), and a gibberellin mixture (GA4/7). Both BAP and TIBA increased shoot number per P. tremula explant and decreased the number of adventitious roots, but TIBA, in contrast to BAP, did not inhibit lateral root formation. However, for the maintenance of both adventitious shoot and root formation above the control level, the combination of PBZ and GA4/7 was shown to be especially promising. Full article

Meconium and Amniotic Fluid IgG Fc Binding Protein (FcGBP) Concentrations in Neonates Delivered by Cesarean Section and by Vaginal Birth in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy

IgG Fc binding protein (FcGBP) is a mucin-like protein that binds strongly to IgG and IgG–antigen complexes in intestinal mucus. FcGBP presence and its altered expression levels in meconium accumulating in the fetal intestine and amniotic fluid flowing in the intestine may provide new knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for the immune adaptation of the fetus to extrauterine life. FcGBP concentrations were measured by ELISA in the first-pass meconium and amniotic fluid samples collected from 120 healthy neonates delivered by either vaginal birth (n = 35) or cesarean section (n = 85) at 36 to 41 weeks gestation. The meconium FcGBP concentrations (405.78 ± 145.22 ng/g) decreased (r = −0.241, p = 0.007) over the course of 36 to 41 weeks gestation, but there were no significant changes (p > 0.05) in the amniotic fluid FcGBP (135.70 ± 35.83 ng/mL) in the same period. Both meconium and amniotic fluid FcGBP concentrations were higher (p < 0.05) in neonates delivered by cesarean section. Decreases in the meconium FcGBP concentrations correlated (r = −0.37, p = 0.027) with the gestational age in neonates delivered by vaginal birth but not in those delivered by cesarean section (p > 0.05). No association was found between the FcGBP concentrations in meconium and amniotic fluid and the birth weight (p > 0.05). With the development of the mucosal immune system in the fetal intestine over the course of the third trimester of gestation, the meconium FcGBP concentrations decrease. Increased FcGBP concentrations measured in the meconium and amniotic fluid of neonates delivered by cesarean section may possibly indicate altered intestinal mucosal function. Intrauterine growth is not associated with the intestinal mucosal barrier maturation involving FcGBP. Full article

RadiomiX for Radiomics Analysis: Automated Approaches to Overcome Challenges in Replicability

Background/Objectives: To simplify the decision-making process in radiomics by employing RadiomiX, an algorithm designed to automatically identify the best model combination and validate them across multiple environments was developed, thus enhancing the reliability of results. Methods: RadiomiX systematically tests classifier and feature selection method combinations known to be suitable for radiomic datasets to determine the best-performing configuration across multiple train–test splits and K-fold cross-validation. The framework was validated on four public retrospective radiomics datasets including lung nodules, metastatic breast cancer, and hepatic encephalopathy using CT, PET/CT, and MRI modalities. Model performance was assessed using the area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve (AUC) and accuracy metrics. Results: RadiomiX achieved superior performance across four datasets: LLN (AUC = 0.850 and accuracy = 0.785), SLN (AUC = 0.845 and accuracy = 0.754), MBC (AUC = 0.889 and accuracy = 0.833), and CHE (AUC = 0.837 and accuracy = 0.730), significantly outperforming original published models (p < 0.001 for LLN/SLN and p = 0.023 for MBC accuracy). When original published models were re-evaluated using ten-fold cross-validation, their performance decreased substantially: LLN (AUC = 0.783 and accuracy = 0.731), SLN (AUC = 0.748 and accuracy = 0.714), MBC (AUC = 0.764 and accuracy = 0.711), and CHE (AUC = 0.755 and accuracy = 0.677), further highlighting RadiomiX’s methodological advantages. Conclusions: Systematically testing model combinations using RadiomiX has led to significant improvements in performance. This emphasizes the potential of automated ML as a step towards better-performing and more reliable radiomic models. Full article

Mapping QTL and Identifying Candidate Genes for Resistance to Brown Stripe in Highly Allo-Autopolyploid Modern Sugarcane

Disease resistance is one of the most important target traits for sugarcane genetic improvement. Sugarcane brown stripe (SBS) caused by Helminthosporium stenospilum is one of the most destructive foliar diseases, which not only reduces harvest cane yield but also sugar content. This study aimed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) and candidate genes associated with SBS resistance. Here, the phenotypic investigation in six field habitats showed a continuous normal distribution, revealing that the SBS resistance trait is a quantitative trait. Two high-density linkage maps based on the single-dose markers calling from the Axiom Sugarcane100K SNP chip were constructed for the dominant sugarcane cultivars YT93-159 (SBS-resistant) and ROC22 (SBS-susceptible) with a density of 2.53 cM and 2.54 cM per SNP marker, and mapped on 87 linkage groups (LGs) and 80 LGs covering 3069.45 cM and 1490.34 cM of genetic distance, respectively. A total of 32 QTL associated with SBS resistance were detected by QTL mapping, which explained 3.73–11.64% of the phenotypic variation, and the total phenotypic variance explained (PVE) in YT93-159 and ROC22 was 107.44% and 79.09%, respectively. Among these QTL, four repeatedly detected QTL (qSBS-Y38-1, qSBS-Y38-2, qSBS-R8, and qSBS-R46) were considered stable QTL. Meanwhile, two major QTL, qSBS-Y38 and qSBS-R46, could account for 11.47% and 11.64% of the PVE, respectively. Twenty-five disease resistance candidate genes were screened by searching these four stable QTL regions in their corresponding intervals, of which Soffic.01G0010840-3C (PR3) and Soffic.09G0017520-1P (DND2) were significantly up-regulated in YT93-159 by qRT-PCR, while Soffic.01G0040620-1P (EDR2) was significantly up-regulated in ROC22. These results will provide valuable insights for future studies on sugarcane breeding in combating this disease. Full article

Background: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is a common enthesopathy in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Shear wave elastography (SWE) and the Belgrade ultrasound enthesitis score (BUSES) may detect PF, but their comparative diagnostic performance is unclear. Objective: To compare SWE with the BUSES for identifying PF in individuals with and without AS. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 96 participants were stratified into AS and non-AS populations, each further divided based on the presence or absence of clinical PF. Demographic data, the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score (AOFAS), and the BASDAI score were recorded. All subjects underwent grayscale ultrasonography, the BUSES scoring, and SWE assessment of the plantar fascia. Logistic regression models were constructed for each population, controlling for age, body mass index (BMI), and fascia–skin distance. ROC curve analyses were performed to evaluate diagnostic accuracy. Results: In both AS and non-AS groups, SWE and the BUSES were significant predictors of PF (p < 0.05). SWE demonstrated slightly higher diagnostic accuracy, with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.845 (AS) and 0.837 (non-AS), compared to the BUSES with AUCs of 0.785 and 0.831, respectively. SWE also showed stronger adjusted odds ratios in regression models. The interobserver agreement was good to excellent for both modalities. Conclusions: Both SWE and the BUSES are effective for PF detection, with SWE offering marginally superior diagnostic performance, particularly in AS patients. SWE may enhance the early identification of biomechanical changes in the plantar fascia. Full article

Comparative Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies in Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Regression Analysis

Background: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown consistent efficacy in individuals with psychosis, as supported by many trials. One classical distinction is that between affective and non-affective psychosis. Few studies have specifically examined the possible moderating role of substantial affective elements. In this systematic review and meta-regression analysis, we assess how CBT response differs across the affective spectrum in psychosis. Methods: We included studies assessing various CBT modalities, including third-wave therapies, administered in people with psychosis. The study protocol is published in the Open Science Framework. Meta-regression was conducted to assess whether the proportion of participants with affective psychosis (AP), as proxied by a documented diagnosis of schizoaffective (SZA) disorder, moderated CBT efficacy across positive, negative, and depressive symptom domains. Results: The literature search identified 4457 records, of which 39 studies were included. The median proportion of SZA disorder participants was 17%, with a total of 422 AP participants represented. Meta-regression showed a trend toward lower CBT efficacy for positive symptoms with a higher SZA disorder proportion (β = +0.10 SMD per 10% increase in AP; p = 0.12), though it was not statistically significant. No significant associations were found for negative (β = +0.05; p = 0.73) or depressive symptoms (β = −0.02; p = 0.78). Heterogeneity was substantial across all models (I2 ranging from 54% to 80%), and funnel plot asymmetry was observed in negative and depressive symptoms, indicating possible publication bias. Risk of bias assessment showed the anticipated inherent difficulty of psychotherapies in blinding and possibly dropout rates affecting some studies. Conclusions: Affective symptoms may reduce the effectiveness of CBT for positive symptoms in psychotic disorders, although the findings did not reach statistical significance. Other patient-level characteristics in psychosis could indicate which patients can benefit most from CBT modalities. Full article

Background: This study aimed to examine the effects of an 8-week plyometric training program on lower-limb explosive strength, jump performance, musculotendinous stiffness, reactive strength index (RSI), and multidirectional speed in elite Polish badminton players. Methods: Twenty-four athletes were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 15), which supplemented their regular badminton training with plyometric exercises, or a control group (n = 15), which continued standard technical training. Performance assessments included squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), single-leg jumps, sprint tests (5 m, 10 m), lateral movements, musculotendinous stiffness, and RSI measurements. Results: The experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in jump height, power output, stiffness, and 10 m sprint and lateral slide-step performance (p < 0.05), with large effect sizes. No significant changes were observed in the control group. Single-leg jump improvements suggested potential benefits for addressing lower-limb asymmetries. Conclusions: An 8-week plyometric intervention significantly enhanced lower-limb explosive performance and multidirectional movement capabilities in young badminton players. These findings support the integration of targeted plyometric training into regular training programs to optimize physical performance, improve movement efficiency, and potentially reduce injury risk in high-intensity racket sports. The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, is one of the polyphagous pests of several crops and forestry, resistant to numerous conventional chemicals. Due to the negative side effects of harmful chemical pesticides, such as environmental pollution, and risks to human health, the introduction of effective and low-risk alternatives is essential. The promising pesticidal effects of essential oils (EOs) isolated from Artemisia annua have been documented in recent studies. In the present study, the acaricidal effects of an A. annua EO, along with its two dominant monoterpenoids, 1,8-cineole and camphor, were investigated against adults of T. urticae. Artemisia annua EO, 1,8-cineole, and camphor, with 24 h-LC50 values of 0.289, 0.533, and 0.64 µL/L air, respectively, had significant toxicity by fumigation against T. urticae adults. Along with lethality, A. annua EO and monoterpenoids had significant inhibitory effects on the activity of detoxifying enzymes, including α- and β-esterases, glutathione S-transferases, and cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase. According to the findings of the present study, A. annua EO and its two dominant monoterpenoids, 1,8-cineole and camphor, with significant toxicity and inhibitory effects on detoxifying enzymes, can be introduced as available, effective, and eco-friendly acaricides in the management of T. urticae. Gum Acacia–Dexamethasone Combination Attenuates Sepsis-Induced Acute Kidney Injury in Rats via Targeting SIRT1-HMGB1 Signaling Pathway and Preserving Mitochondrial Integrity

Background/Objective: Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) is a substantial contributor to mortality in critically ill patients. This study aimed to investigate the impact of gum acacia (GA) and dexamethasone (DEX) combination on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced SA-AKI in rats. Methods: Thirty-six male Sprague Dawley rats were separated into six groups, including the control, GA group, LPS-induced AKI group, DEX + LPS group, GA + LPS group, and GA + DEX + LPS group. AKI was induced in rats using LPS (10 mg/kg, i.p.). GA was administered orally (7.5 g/kg) for 14 days before LPS injection, and DEX was injected (1mg/kg, i.p.) 2 h after LPS injection. Results: LPS injection significantly (p < 0.05, vs. control group) impaired renal function, as evidenced through increased levels of kidney function biomarkers, decreased creatinine clearance, and histopathological alterations in the kidneys. LPS also significantly (p < 0.05, vs. control group) elevated levels of oxidative stress markers, while it reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, LPS triggered an inflammatory response, manifested by significant (p < 0.05, vs. control group) upregulation of Toll-like receptor 4, myeloid differentiation primary response 88, interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and nuclear factor-κB, along with increased expression of high-mobility group box 1. Administration of GA significantly ameliorated LPS-induced renal impairment by enhancing antioxidant defenses and suppressing inflammatory pathways (p < 0.05, vs. LPS group). Furthermore, GA-DEX-treated rats showed improved kidney function, reduced oxidative stress, and attenuated inflammatory markers (p < 0.05, vs. LPS group). Conclusions: The GA-DEX combination exhibited potent renoprotective effects against LPS-induced SA-AKI, possibly due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These results suggest that the GA-DEX combination could be a promising and effective therapeutic agent for managing SA-AKI. Full article

Ultra-Weak Photon Emission from Crown Ethers Exposed to Fenton’s Reagent Fe2+-H2O2

We hypothesized that compounds containing ether linkages within their backbone structures, when exposed to hydroxyl radicals (•OH), can generate ultra-weak photon emission (UPE) as a result of the formation of triplet excited carbonyl species (3R=O*). To evaluate this hypothesis, we investigated the UPE of four compounds, each at a final concentration of 185.2 µmol/L: EGTA (ethylene glycol-bis(β-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid), a potent chelator of divalent cations, and three crown ethers—12-crown-4, 15-crown-5, and 18-crown-6—containing two, four, five, and six ether bonds, respectively. •OH was generated using a modified Fenton reagent—92.6 µmol/L Fe2+ and 2.6 mmol/L H2O2. The highest UPE was recorded for the Fe2+–EGTA–H2O2 (2863 ± 158 RLU; relative light units), followed by 18-crown-6, 15-crown-5, and 12-crown-4 (1161 ± 78, 615± 86, and 579 ± 109 RLU, respectively; p < 0.05), corresponding to the number of ether groups present. Controls lacking either H2O2 or Fe2+ exhibited no significant light emission compared to the buffer medium. These findings support the hypothesis that ether bonds, when oxidatively attacked by •OH, undergo chemical transformations resulting in the formation of 3R=O* species, the decay of which is associated with UPE. In crown ethers exposed to Fe2+-H2O2, the intensity of UPE was correlated with the number of ether bonds in their structure. Full article
