With the acceleration of digital transformation, open-source software has become a fundamental component of modern smart grids and other critical infrastructures. However, the complex dependency structures of open-source ecosystems and the continuous emergence of vulnerabilities pose substantial challenges to software supply chain security. In power information networks and cyber–physical control systems, vulnerabilities in open-source components integrated into Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Energy Management System (EMS), and Distribution Management System (DMS) platforms and distributed energy controllers may propagate along the supply chain, threatening system security and operational stability. In such application scenarios, large language models (LLMs) often suffer from limited semantic accuracy when handling domain-specific security terminology, as well as deployment inefficiencies that hinder their practical adoption in critical infrastructure environments. To address these issues, this paper proposes KD-SecBERT, a domain-specific semantic bidirectional encoder optimized through multi-level knowledge distillation for open-source software supply chain security in smart grid applications. The proposed framework constructs a hierarchical multi-teacher ensemble that integrates general language understanding, cybersecurity-domain knowledge, and code semantic analysis, together with a lightweight student architecture based on depthwise separable convolutions and multi-head self-attention. In addition, a dynamic, multi-dimensional distillation strategy is introduced to jointly perform layer-wise representation alignment, ensemble knowledge fusion, and task-oriented optimization under a progressive curriculum learning scheme. Extensive experiments conducted on a multi-source dataset comprising National Vulnerability Database (NVD) and Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) entries, security-related GitHub code, and Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) test cases show that KD-SecBERT achieves an accuracy of 91.3%, a recall of 90.6%, and an F1-score of 89.2% on vulnerability classification tasks, indicating strong robustness in recognizing both common and low-frequency security semantics. These results demonstrate that KD-SecBERT provides an effective and practical solution for semantic analysis and software supply chain risk assessment in smart grids and other critical-infrastructure environments. Internet of Things (IoT) devices are increasingly deployed in homes and enterprises, yet they face a rising rate of cyberattacks. High-quality Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) is essential for data-driven, deep learning (DL)-based cybersecurity, as structured intelligence enables faster, automated detection. However, many CTI platforms still use unstructured or non-standard formats, hindering integration with ML systems.This study compares CTI from one commercial platform (AlienVault OTX) and public vulnerability databases (NVD’s CVE and CPE) in the IoT/smart home context. We assess their adherence to the Structured Threat Information Expression (STIX) v2.1 standard and the quality and coverage of their intelligence. Using 6.2K IoT-related CTI objects, we conducted syntactic and semantic analyses. Results showed that OTX achieved full STIX compliance. Based on our coverage metric, OTX demonstrated high intelligence completeness, whereas the NVD sources showed partial contextual coverage. IoT threats exhibited an upward trend, with Network as the dominant attack vector and Gain Access as the most common objective. The limited use of STIX-standardized vocabulary reduced machine readability, constraining data-driven applications. Our findings inform the design and selection of CTI feeds for intelligent intrusion detection and automated defense systems. Full article

Background: NVD003 is an autologous, adipose tissue-derived stem cell-based tissue-engineered bone graft substitute with pro-osteogenic, anti-resorptive, and pro-angiogenic properties. Here, we describe highlights from the NVD003 preclinical development program as well as early clinical experience. Methods: NVD003 is produced in a Good Manufacturing Practice-controlled process from adipose stem cells collected during a minimally invasive liposuction procedure. The final implant is a ready-to-use moldable putty with fixed mineral content and predefined physiologic ranges of osteogenic cells and bioactive growth factors. Preclinical pharmacology studies were conducted in nude rats using a paravertebral implantation model, and subsequently, in a femoral critical-sized bone defect (CSBD) model. In a first-in-human Phase 1b/2a study, NVD003 was used for fracture osteosynthesis with classical fixation material in nine adults with recalcitrant lower limb non-union. NVD003 was also used at the discretion of treating physicians in four pediatric patients surgically treated for congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia (CPT) with the Masquelet technique. Efficacy was evaluated as clinical healing and in terms of bone formation, bone union, and bone remodeling on radiographs and computed tomography using the extended Lane and Sandhu Scale. Results: Preclinical studies indicated that NVD003 requires cellularity for its bioactivity and moreover facilitates bone union when used as a graft material in femoral CSBD. In the clinical study, nine adult participants were successfully grafted with NVD003 and completed study follow-up to 24 months, with extended safety follow-up to 5 years ongoing. No adverse events were considered related to NVD003. Maximal bone formation occurred between 3 and 12 months post-implantation; the mean time to clinical healing was 6 months and the mean time to radiological union was 17 months. Ultimately, 89% (8/9) of patients achieved bone union without refracture. All four pediatric patients with CPT also achieved lasting bone union following grafting with NVD003. No safety signals were observed over a mean follow-up of 62.1 months. Conclusions: NVD003 represents a safe, autologous bone graft substitute product without side effects of heterotopic ossification or bone resorption. NVD003 facilitated bone union in adult and pediatric patients even under severe pathophysiological conditions. Full article

Weight traits serve as key economic indicators for assessing growth performance and commercial quality in the mud crab Scylla paramamosain, yet the genetic basis of these traits remains poorly characterized. Here, we performed whole-genome resequencing on 323 individuals and conducted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on five weight-related traits: (1) body-related traits, including body weight (BW), trunk weight (TruW), and weight excluding chelae (WEC); (2) appendage-related traits, containing appendage weight (AppW) and cheliped weight (CheW). Significantly associated SNPs were primarily enriched on chromosomes 15, 22, 25, and 36. For body-related traits, we identified 45 shared candidate SNPs and 175 common candidate genes; appendage-related traits revealed 71 shared candidate SNPs, and 229 common genes were identified; and across all five traits, there were 9 shared candidate SNPs and 49 common genes. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses indicated that shared functional terms/pathways among the five traits were mainly related to metabolism, development, and immunity. Body-related traits exhibited more unique GO terms and KEGG pathways associated with metabolism and immunity, whereas appendage-related traits showed some unique GO terms and KEGG pathways involved in development and morphogenesis. Among the candidate genes, we identified multiple genes associated with growth and development, metabolism, and immune responses. For example, the CCHa1R gene, common to carapace-related traits, is linked to feeding; the DCX-EMA gene, which is common to appendage-related traits, is connected to movement, and the MSTO1 gene is pertinent to muscle development. Among the candidate genes shared by all five traits, there are a series of genes concerning growth and development (such as NVD, CYP307A1, FGF1, NF2, ANKRD52) and immune responses (RGS10). These findings advance our understanding of the genetic architecture underlying decapod crustacean growth and provide valuable insights for optimizing sustainable breeding strategies in S. paramamosain. Paretic and paralyzing syndromes affecting wild birds are widely described in the literature, with outbreaks showing an increase in frequency and intensity worldwide during recent years. In the Iberian Peninsula, a paretic clinical picture without known etiology affecting mostly gulls has been reported during the last few decades. This paretic syndrome (PS) affects waterbirds and is characterized by a set of signs of ascendent flaccid paralysis, dyspnea, and diarrhea at different levels of severity. This study presents the first macro-analysis of some potential etiological PS agents in wild birds in southern Portugal. Other possible etiologies of PS related to nutritional deficiencies and environmental pollutants were not studied but are also discussed here. A total of 571 samples, belonging to 377 individuals with (n = 336) and without (n = 41) PS signs, have been tested for seven different toxins groups (botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), domoic acid (DA), anatoxin-a (ATX-a), cylindrospermopsin (CYN), tetrodotoxins (TTXs), and microcystins (MCs)) and three viral infections (gull adenovirus (GA), Newcastle disease virus (NVD), and highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIV)). Of all the birds tested for botulinum neurotoxin, those with PS signs were positive (100%) and those without PS signs were negative (0%), confirming an association between PS and botulism. Some samples were positive for PSTs and MCs, but the prevalence in birds with PS signs was not significantly higher (2.5% and 5.3%, respectively) than in birds without signs (5.4% and 5.4%, respectively). Two birds without PS signs were positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza virus. The presence of the rest of the toxins and viruses was negative for all the samples tested. Our results support the relevant contribution of botulinum neurotoxin in the PS outbreaks observed in several species of aquatic birds in the last decades in southern Portugal, suggesting it could be one of the main causes of mortality in waterbirds. Background: Changes in lung ventilation are well documented in term neonates while in late preterm neonates these patterns are poorly understood despite their increased risk of respiratory morbidity. Objectives: The study aimed to compare and clarify the differences in regional lung ventilation of late preterm and term neonates during the early adaptation period using electrical impedance tomography (EIT). Material and methods: The case-control study was conducted in the years 2020–2022. It included 51 late preterm neonates (LPN, Study group) and 45 term neonates (TN, Control) born by normal vaginal delivery (NVD). EIT examinations were performed with a Swisstom BB2 (Switzerland) equipment. The data recordings were performed no later than 30 (I Record), 60 (II), and 90 (III) minutes after the birth. Results: Statistically significant differences between LPN and TN were observed in the non-dependent lung areas at I record, with more silent spaces observed in the LPN (p < 0.001). Differences in the dependent lung regions were observed across all recordings, with LPN demonstrating more silent spaces (p < 0.001). LPN demonstrated greater stretch-related changes in the 10% and 20% stretch categories across all recordings, while TN showed greater changes in the 50%, 70%, and 90% categories. Tidal volumes in the right lung of TN are distributed more towards the ventral and central ventral regions. In contrast, tidal volumes of LPN are distributed to the central dorsal and dorsal regions of the right lung. Conclusions: LPN during the first 90 min after the birth show reduced lung ventilation assessed by EIT, suggesting a possible impairment of early postnatal adaptation. Full article

This narrative review synthesizes recent basic and clinical research on visual disturbances in low-light environments, highlighting the evaluation techniques for these conditions. It focuses on the degradation of visual acuity under dim lighting, exacerbated by pupil dilation, known as night vision disturbance (NVD). Key contributors to NVD include optical scattering, intraocular diffraction, ocular aberrations, and uncorrected refractive errors, all significantly impacting quality of life and functional abilities. This review also examines the effects of aging, eye disorders, surgical interventions, and corneal irregularities on NVD. It details the definitions, distinctions, and measurement methodologies for various optical phenomena, using both objective and subjective approaches, such as visual function questionnaires, simulators, and the light disturbance analyzer (LDA). The LDA is validated for clinical characterization and quantification of light distortion, proving useful in both clinical and research settings. This review advocates for continued innovation in therapeutic interventions to improve patient outcomes and alleviate the impact of visual disturbances. Full article

This paper addresses the critical need for advanced real-time vehicle detection methodologies in Vehicle Intelligence Systems (VIS), especially in the context of using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for data acquisition in severe weather conditions, such as heavy snowfall typical of the Nordic region. Traditional vehicle detection techniques, which often rely on custom-engineered features and deterministic algorithms, fall short in adapting to diverse environmental challenges, leading to a demand for more precise and sophisticated methods. The limitations of current architectures, particularly when deployed in real-time on edge devices with restricted computational capabilities, are highlighted as significant hurdles in the development of efficient vehicle detection systems. To bridge this gap, our research focuses on the formulation of an innovative approach that combines the fractional B-spline wavelet transform with a tailored U-Net architecture, operational on a Raspberry Pi 4. This method aims to enhance vehicle detection and localization by leveraging the unique attributes of the NVD dataset, which comprises drone-captured imagery under the harsh winter conditions of northern Sweden. The dataset, featuring 8450 annotated frames with 26,313 vehicles, serves as the foundation for evaluating the proposed technique. The comparative analysis of the proposed method against state-of-the-art detectors, such as YOLO and Faster RCNN, in both accuracy and efficiency on constrained devices, emphasizes the capability of our method to balance the trade-off between speed and accuracy, thereby broadening its utility across various domains. Operating systems play a crucial role in computer systems, serving as the fundamental infrastructure that supports a wide range of applications and services. However, they are also prime targets for malicious actors seeking to exploit vulnerabilities and compromise system security. This is a crucial area that requires active research; however, OS vulnerabilities have not been actively studied in recent years. Therefore, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of OS vulnerabilities, aiming to enhance the understanding of their trends, severity, and common weaknesses. Our research methodology encompasses data preparation, sampling of vulnerable OS categories and versions, and an in-depth analysis of trends, severity levels, and types of OS vulnerabilities. We scrape the high-level data from reliable and recognized sources to generate two refined OS vulnerability datasets: one for OS categories and another for OS versions. Our study reveals the susceptibility of popular operating systems such as Windows, Windows Server, Debian Linux, and Mac OS. Specifically, Windows 10, Windows 11, Android (v11.0, v12.0, v13.0), Windows Server 2012, Debian Linux (v10.0, v11.0), Fedora 37, and HarmonyOS 2, are identified as the most vulnerable OS versions in recent years (2021–2022). Notably, these vulnerabilities exhibit a high severity, with maximum CVSS scores falling into the 7–8 and 9–10 range. Common vulnerability types, including CWE-119, CWE-20, CWE-200, and CWE-787, are prevalent in these OSs and require specific attention from OS vendors. The findings on trends, severity, and types of OS vulnerabilities from this research will serve as a valuable resource for vendors, security professionals, and end-users, empowering them to enhance OS security measures, prioritize vulnerability management efforts, and make informed decisions to mitigate risks associated with these vulnerabilities. Vulnerability identification and assessment is a key process in risk management. While enumerations of vulnerabilities are available, it is challenging to identify vulnerability sets focused on the profiles and roles of specific organizations. To this end, we have employed systematized knowledge and relevant standards (including National Electric Sector Cybersecurity Organization Resource (NESCOR), ISO/IEC 27005:2018 and National Vulnerability Database (NVD)) to identify a set of 250 vulnerabilities for operators of energy-related critical infrastructures. We have elaborated a “double-mapping” scheme to associate (arbitrarily) categorized assets, with the pool of identified Physical, Cyber and Human/Organizational vulnerabilities. We have designed and implemented an extensible vulnerability identification and assessment framework, allowing historized assessments, based on the CVSS (Common Vulnerability Scoring System) scoring mechanism. This framework has been extended to allow modelling of the vulnerabilities and assessments using the Structured Threat Information eXpression (STIX) JSON format, as Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) information, to facilitate information sharing between Electrical Power and Energy Systems (EPES) and to promote collaboration and interoperability scenarios. Vulnerability assessments from the initial analysis of the project in the context of Research and Technology Development (RTD) projects have been statistically processed, offering insights in terms of the assessment’s importance and distribution. The assessments have also been transformed into a dynamic dataset processed to identify and quantify correlation and start the discussion on the interpretation of the way assessments are performed. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the abnormalities of the retina in which a diabetic patient suffers from severe vision loss due to an affected retina. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is the final and most critical stage of diabetic retinopathy. Abnormal and fragile blood vessels start to grow on the surface of the retina at this stage. It causes retinal detachment, which may lead to complete blindness in severe cases. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for the detection and grading of neovascularization. The proposed system first performs pre-processing on input retinal images to enhance the vascular pattern, followed by blood vessel segmentation and optic disc localization. Then various features are tested on the candidate regions with different thresholds. In this way, positive and negative advanced diabetic retinopathy cases are separated. Optic disc coordinates are applied for the grading of neovascularization as NVD or NVE. The proposed algorithm improves the quality of automated diagnostic systems by eliminating normal blood vessels and exudates that might cause hindrances in accurate disease detection, thus resulting in more accurate detection of abnormal blood vessels. The evaluation of the proposed system has been carried out using performance parameters such as sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and positive predictive value (PPV) on a publicly available standard retinal image database and one of the locally available databases. The proposed algorithm gives an accuracy of 98.5% and PPV of 99.8% on MESSIDOR and an accuracy of 96.5% and PPV of 100% on the local database. Full article

20-Hydroxyecdysone (20E) plays an essential role in coordinating developmental transitions in insects through responsive protein-coding genes and microRNAs (miRNAs). However, the interplay between 20E and miRNAs during insect metamorphosis is unknown. In this study, using small RNA sequencing, a comparative miRNA transcriptomic analysis in different development stages, and 20E treatment, we identified ame-bantam-3p as a key candidate miRNA involved in honeybee metamorphosis. Target prediction and in vitro dual-luciferase assays confirmed that ame-bantam-3p interacts with the coding region of the megf8 gene and promotes its expression. Meanwhile, temporal expression analysis revealed that the expression of ame-bantam-3p is higher in the larval stage than in prepupal and pupal stages, and that this expression pattern is similar to that of megf8. In vivo, we found that the mRNA level of megf8 was significantly increased after the injection of ame-bantam-3p agomir. A 20E feeding assay showed that 20E downregulated the expression of both ame-bantam-3p and its target gene megf8 on larval days five, six, and seven. Meanwhile, the injection of ame-bantam-3p agomir also reduced the 20E titer, as well as the transcript levels of essential ecdysteroid synthesis genes, including Dib, Phm, Sad, and Nvd. The transcript levels of 20E cascade genes, including EcRA, ECRB1, USP, E75, E93, and Br-c, were also significantly decreased after ame-bantam-3p agomir injection. However, ame-bantam-3p antagomir injection and dsmegf8 injection showed the opposite effect to ame-bantam-3p agomir injection. Ame-bantam-3p agomir treatment ultimately led to mortality and the failure of larval pupation by inhibiting ecdysteroid synthesis and the 20E signaling pathway. However, the expression of 20E signaling-related genes was significantly increased after megf8 knockdown, and larvae injected with dsmegf8 showed early pupation. Combined, our results indicate that ame-bantam-3p is involved in the 20E signaling pathway through positively regulating its target gene megf8 and is indispensable for larval–pupal development in the honeybee. These findings may enhance our understanding of the relationship between 20E signaling and small RNAs during honeybee development. Full article

Background and Objectives: In pre-eclampsia, restricted blood supply due to the lack of trophoblastic cell invasion and spiral artery remodeling is responsible for adverse pregnancies and maternal outcomes, which is added to by maternal undernutrition. This study was designed to observe the effect of multiple nutritional micronutrient supplements on the pregnancy outcomes of underweight pre-eclamptic women. To investigate the effects of lipid-based multiple micr supplementations (LNS-PLW) on pregnancy and maternal outcomes in underweight primigravida pre-eclamptic women. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 pre-eclamptic, underweight primigravida women from the antenatal units of tertiary care hospitals in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, were randomly divided into two groups (Group 1 and Group 2). The participants of both groups were receiving routine treatment for pre-eclampsia: iron (60 mgs) and folic acid (400 ug) IFA daily. Group 2 was given an additional sachet of 75 gm LNS-PLW daily till delivery. The pregnancy outcomes of both groups were recorded. The clinical parameters, hemoglobin, platelet count, and proteinuria were measured at recruitment. Results: The percentage of live births in Group 2 was 93% compared to 92% in Group 1. There were more normal vaginal deliveries (NVDs) in Group 2 compared to Group 1 (Group 2, 78% NVD; group 1, 69% NVD). In Group 1, 4% of the participants developed eclampsia. The frequency of cesarean sections was 8/26 (31%) in Group 1 and 6/28 (22%) in Group 2. The number of intrauterine deaths (IUDs) was only 1/28 (4%) in Group 2, while it was 2/26 (8%) in Group 1. The gestational age at delivery significantly improved with LNS-PLW supplementation (Group 2, 38.64 ± 0.78 weeks; Group 1, 36.88 ± 1.55 weeks, p-value 0.006). The Apgar score (Group 2, 9.3; Group 1, 8.4) and the birth weight of the babies improved with maternal supplementation with LNS-PLW (Group 2, 38.64 ± 0.78 weeks: Group 1, 36.88 ± 1.55; p-value 0.003). There was no significant difference in systolic blood pressure, while diastolic blood pressure (Group 2, 89.57 ± 2.08 mmHg; Group 1, 92.17 ± 5.18 mmHg, p-value 0.025) showed significant improvement with LNS-PLW supplementation. The hemoglobin concentration increased with the LNS-PLW supplement consumed in Group 2 (Group 2, 12.15 ± 0.78 g/dL; Group 1, 11.39 ± 0.48 g/dL, p-value < 0.001). However, no significant difference among the platelet counts of the two groups was observed. Conclusions: The pregnancy and maternal outcomes of underweight pre-eclamptic women can be improved by the prenatal daily supplementation of LNS-PLW during pregnancy, along with IFA and regular antenatal care and follow-up. Newcastle disease virus (NDV), also known as avian paramyxoviruses 1 (APMV-1) is among the most important viruses infecting avian species. Given its widespread circulation, there is a high risk for the reintroduction of virulent strains into the domestic poultry industry, making the surveillance of wild and domestic birds a crucial process to appropriately respond to novel outbreaks. In the present study, we investigated an outbreak characterized by the identification of sick pigeons in a large municipality in Northeastern Brazil in 2018. The affected pigeons presented neurological signs, including motor incoordination, torticollis, and lethargy. Moribund birds were collected, and through a detailed histopathological analysis we identified severe lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis with perivascular cuffs and gliosis in the central nervous system, and lymphoplasmacytic inflammation in the liver, kidney, and intestine. A total of five pigeons tested positive for NDV, as assessed by rRT-PCR targeted to the M gene. Laboratory virus isolation on Vero E6 cells confirmed infection, after the recovery of infectious NVD from brain and kidney tissues. We next characterized the isolated NDV/pigeon/PE-Brazil/MP003/2018 by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Phylogenetic analysis grouped the virus with other NDV class II isolates from subgenotype VI.2.1.2, including two previous NDV isolates from Brazil in 2014 and 2019. The diversity of aminoacid residues at the fusion F protein cleavage site was analyzed identifying the motif RRQKR↓F, typical of virulent strains. Our results all highlight the importance of virus surveillance in wild and domestic birds, especially given the risk of zoonotic NDV. Full article

Nipah virus (NiV) disease (NVD) remains a re-emerging public health threat in India. We assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and risk perception of NVD and future vaccine intent among a convenience sample of health care providers (HCP). The primary outcome measures were the knowledge, attitudes, and risk perception scores. Of 261 participants surveyed, 203 (77.8%) had heard of NiV and associated symptoms. The majority (248, 95%) identified the fruit bat as a primary NiV reservoir and 205 (79.8%) were aware of human-to-human transmission via droplets. Only 101 (38.7%) participants were aware that drinking date palm sap is a risk factor for transmission. Most HCP either agreed (117 (44.8%)) or strongly agreed (131 (50.2%)) that NiV is a serious illness. Less than half (121 (46.4%)) were aware of any institutional protocol for NiV; 235 (90.7%) of HCP stated that they need more information about prevention and treatment options. Knowledge scores were significantly higher among physicians compared to nurses whereas nurses and academic providers were more likely to have higher attitudes scores. A majority of respondents (20,779.9%) were willing to be vaccinated and willing to recommend the NiV vaccine to their patients (21,682.8%). Future strategies include education of HCP to bridge the knowledge gaps and enhance preparedness through disease-specific training for NiV infection. Full article
