Background/Objective: This study aimed to develop and validate an automated deep learning-based model for 3D segmentation and quantification of the psoas major and gluteus muscles at 3T MRI in a large cohort study and to analyze the distribution of findings as well as gender-, age-, and BMI-related differences. Methods: The study population consisted of 27,805 participants from the MR imaging subgroup of the population-based, longitudinal German National Cohort study. A deep learning segmentation model was trained, tested, and implemented to automatically quantify psoas major maximum cross-sectional area (CSApsoas) and gluteus volume (Vgluteus) on T1-weighted 3D VIBE DIXON sequences. Associations with gender, age, and BMI were assessed by linear regression. Results: The segmentation model demonstrated a high performance, with mean Dice coefficients of 0.92 for the psoas and 0.95 for the gluteus. Males showed higher total CSApsoas (males: 37.92 ± 5.80 cm2; females: 24.47 ± 3.65 cm2) and higher total Vgluteus (males: 3.384 ± 0.528 L; females: 2.386 ± 0.408 L) compared to females. Younger participants aged <30 years showed the highest CSApsoas, whereas participants aged 30–59 years showed the highest Vgluteus. Participants with higher BMI > 25 kg/m2 showed higher muscle CSA and volumes compared to subjects with lower BMI < 25 kg/m2. Vgluteus showed a strong correlation to body weight in both females and males. Conclusions: Deep learning-based models provide accurate 3D segmentation and quantification of skeletal muscle compartments from MR images in large cohort studies, thus offering a feasible method for skeletal muscle evaluation. The morphometric size characteristics of the psoas and gluteus muscles are dependent on gender and BMI. Deep learning enables accurate 3D segmentation and quantification of skeletal muscle in large MR imaging cohorts, providing a feasible tool for muscle evaluation. Background/Objectives: To assess diagnostic accuracy of two-dimensional (2D) projection methods for rapid visual quality control of automated volumetric (3D) lung segmentations compared with slice-based 3D review of segmentation results for application in large-scale studies. Methods: Segmentation of right and left lungs on T1-weighted MRI of 300 participants of the German National Cohort (NAKO) study was performed using the nnU-NET framework. Three variants of 2D projection images of segmentation masks were created: maximum intensity projection (MIP) using pseudo-chromadepth encoding with different color spectra for right and left lung (Colored_MIP) and standard deviation projection of segmentation mask outlines, encoded in black-and-white (Gray_outline) or using color-encoding (Colored_outline). The worst of two ratings by two independent raters conducting slice-based review for segmentation errors on underlying imaging data and review for mislabeling errors served as the standard of reference. All variants were evaluated by five raters each for identification of segmentation errors and the majority rating was used as index test. The time required for review was recorded and diagnostic accuracies were calculated. Results: Sensitivities of Colored_MIP, Colored_outline and Gray_outline were 88.2% [95%-CI 78.7%; 94.4%], 89.5% [80.3%; 95.3%] and 78.9% [68.1%; 87.5%]; specificities were 98.7% [96.1%; 99.7%], 96.4% [93.1%; 98.5%] and 98.7% [96.1%; 99.7%]; and F1-scores were 0.918, 0.895 and 0.863, respectively. Mean time per case and rater required for evaluation was 2.8 ± 0.9 s for Colored_outline, 1.7 ± 0.1 s for Colored_MIP, and 2.0 ± 0.4 s for Gray_outline. Conclusions: The 2D segmentation mask projection images enabled the detection of segmentation errors of automated 3D segmentations of left and right lungs based on MRI with high diagnostic accuracy, especially when using color-encoding. The method enabled evaluation within a matter of seconds per case. Segmentation mask projection images may assist in visual quality control of automated segmentations in large-scale studies. By decreasing manufacturing costs for different civic purposes, glass recycling is an economically significant technology that also helps conserve natural resources and mitigates environmental problems. Throughout the recycling process, this study used recycled domestic glass in compliance with European guidelines for recycling of household garbage. The purpose of this research is to examine the chemical and mechanical properties of recycled and crushed glass with particle sizes varying from 0.1 mm to 2 mm as a function of various treatment temperatures. This might pave the way for novel building materials, artwork, and interior design components, among other potential uses. “Silica glass”, the most common and ancient kind of glass, which includes SiOk, NakO, CaO, and small amounts of other elements, was utilized in the investigation. Several materials can be successfully modified or altered using step heat treatment. The mechanical and chemical properties of recycled and shattered glass were assessed using microhardness, compressive, and chemical testing. These samples were then compared to mosaics from Murano, Italy, and Dynasty Smalti, China. The recycled and heat-treated glass produced microhardness values of 550.6 HV and 555.0 HV, respectively, when tested with forces of 0.981 N and 2.942 N. These values were higher than those of Murano (Italy) and were comparable to those of Dynasty Smalti mosaic (China). Furthermore, compression testing demonstrated that tempered and heat-tempered glass, which might include up to 5 g of TiO2, could endure compressive strains of up to 16 MPa. This is in sharp contrast to Dynasty Smalti, which could only withstand tensions of 6–8 MPa, and Murano, which could only withstand stresses of 3–4 MPa. Tests conducted chemically over a seven-day period using KOH at 30 g/L and 100 g/L, along with HCl at 3% and 18%, showed that the samples did not alter in any way; their surface, color, and weight were untouched. Crushing and heating recycled glass makes it a viable alternative to using new glass in civil engineering projects. This helps make material reuse more efficient, which in turn helps the environment. Sturdy and resilient in a variety of contexts, the material shares mechanical and chemical properties with standard mosaics. Full article

The main achievement, with regards to the literature, is the minimization of the required transistor count accomplished by the utilization of a suitable lossless integration stage. The derived post-layout simulation results confirm the validity of the presented concept and show that the resulting structure has attractive characteristics in both frequency and time-domain. Functional characterization of vertebrate odorant receptors (ORs), members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, is essential for understanding olfaction. However, the functional expression of ORs in heterologous cells is often challenging, at least partly caused by structural instability in non-olfactory cells. Antagonists have been shown to restore membrane expression of some non-olfactory GPCR mutants, likely by transient increase in structural stability upon antagonist binding. Based on this premise, we examined whether antagonists could enhance OR membrane expression in heterologous cells. Using phenyl salicylate (PES) on cells expressing the mouse OR Or11g7, we observed increased cell surface expression exceeding the effects of co-expression with the OR chaperone RTP1S. After removing the antagonist, Or11g7 retained normal agonist responsiveness. Similar enhancements in cell surface expression were observed for a human OR OR2T11 treated with its antagonists. These findings suggest that small-molecule antagonists act as pharmacological chaperones to stabilize OR conformation, enhancing surface expression in a manner similar to molecular chaperones. Our study reveals a novel role for odorant antagonists in OR biogenesis and may inform future research on olfactory training mechanisms. Full article

Background/Objectives: Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is pivotal in delineating tubal pathology, but is associated with pain and exposure to ionizing radiation. This study investigated which reproductive factors predict HSG-identified tubal pathology. Methods: From May 2016 to August 2023, 3322 infertile females with HSG (mean age 33.9 ± 4.3 years) were assessed for fallopian tube status. Results: HSG indicated that 2764 had patent tubes while 558 (16.8%) had non-patent tubes. Unilateral and bilateral absence of free contrast spillage occurred in 377 (11.3%) and 181 (5.4%) cases, respectively. Non-spillage, denoted as non-patency, was seen in 148 (4.5%) and 153 (4.6%) right and left cases, respectively. Tubal occlusion was observed in 181 (5.4%) and 159 (5.4%) right and left cases, respectively. Hydrosalpinx was found in 37 (1.2%) right and 58 (1.7%) left cases. Multivariate logistic regression revealed CT-IgG positivity (odds ratio [OR]: 1.57), endometrioma (OR: 1.64), and fibroids (OR: 1.58) as independent factors for increased non-patency. CT-IgG positivity (OR: 1.92) and fibroids (OR: 1.88) were significant risk factors for occlusion. Painful defecation (OR: 2.79), CT-IgA positivity (OR: 2.09), CT-IgG positivity (OR: 2.07), and endometrioma (OR: 3.11) were significant risk factors for hydrosalpinx. Conclusions: In females with painful defecation, CT-IgG positivity, endometrioma, and fibroids, HSG may be used as a second-line investigation, with laparoscopy as the preferred assessment tool. Iron oxides (hematite, Fe2O3, and magnetite, Fe3O4), previously used as electron mediators in the galvanic system with zero-valent aluminum (ZVAl), have been shown to recover Au upon cementation in Au–Cu ammoniacal thiosulfate media selectively, and this warrants further investigation. This research is focused on investigating the role of the semiconductive properties of metal oxides by performing a cementation experiment by mixing 0.15 g of electron mediators (Fe3O4, Fe2O3, TiO2 (anatase and rutile)) and 0.15 g of zero-valent aluminum powder as an electron donor in various electrochemical experiments. The results revealed that upon the cementation experiment, synthetic Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 were consistently able to selectively recover Au at around 90% and Cu at around 20%. Compared to activated carbon (AC), TiO2, in anatase and rutile forms, obtained selective recovery of gold, but the recovery was utterly insignificant compared to that of iron oxides, obtaining an average of 93% Au and 63% Cu recovery. The electrochemical and surface analysis supports the results obtained upon the cementation process, where TiO2, upon cyclic voltammetry (CV), obtained two reduction peaks centered at −1.0 V and −0.5 V assigned to reducing Au and Cu ions, respectively. Furthermore, various electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analyses revealed that the flat band potential obtained in the Mott–Schottky plot is around −1.0 V and −0.2 V for iron oxides and titanium oxides, respectively, suggesting that the electrons travel from semiconductor interface to electrolyte interface, and electrons are accessible only to Au ions in the electrolyte interface (reduction band edge around −1.0 V). The determination of this selective cementation mechanism is one of a kind. It has been proposed that the semiconductive properties of Fe2O3, Fe3O4, and, by configuring their relative energy band diagram, the travel of electrons from the iron oxide–electrolyte interface facilitate the selective cementation towards Au(S2O3)23+ ions in gold–copper ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions. A study of the behavior of the power-law negative group delay filters, accompanied by a comparison with their integer-order counterparts, is performed in this work. Employing a curve-fitting based approximation technique, the resulting integer-order rational transfer function is versatile in the sense that it has the same form independent of the order and/or the type of the filter. Its implementation is performed by following three alternative approaches, each one offering different advantages. The findings of this work are supported by simulation and experimental results using suitable platforms. Full article

Population-based biobanking is an essential element of medical research that has grown substantially over the last two decades, and many countries are currently pursuing large national biobanking initiatives. The rise of individual biobanks is paralleled by various networking activities in the field at both the national and international level, such as BBMRI-ERIC in the EU. A significant contribution to population-based biobanking comes from large cohort studies and national repositories, including the United Kingdom Biobank (UKBB), the CONSTANCES project in France, the German National Cohort (NAKO), LifeLines in the Netherlands, FinnGen in Finland, and the All of Us project in the U.S. At the same time, hospital-based biobanking has also gained importance in medical research. We describe some of the scientific questions that can be addressed particularly well by the use of population-based biobanks, including the discovery and calibration of biomarkers and the identification of molecular correlates of health parameters and disease states. Despite the tremendous progress made so far, some major challenges to population-based biobanking still remain, including the need to develop strategies for the long-term sustainability of biobanks, the handling of incidental findings, and the linkage of sample-related and sample-derived data to other relevant resources. Several studies have reported that vitamin D may modify human reproductive functions; however, the results are conflicting. We aimed to comprehensively evaluate serum vitamin D levels and examine the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and ovarian reserve markers, and immune markers of implantation, in reproductive-aged Japanese women with infertility.in reproductive-aged women with infertility. This cross-sectional, single-center study included reproductive-aged women who underwent preconception screening for fertility. Serum vitamin D levels and reproductive and immune markers were measured. Standard and advanced statistical techniques were used. We observed a statistically significant difference in the seasonal and monthly 25(OH) vitamin D levels; the 25(OH) vitamin D level during winter was the lowest among all seasons. However, there was no linear correlation between 25(OH) vitamin D levels and ovarian reserve markers, such as follicle-stimulating hormone and anti-Müllerian hormone, or the Th1/Th2 cell ratio, which is used as an implantation-related immunological marker. In this large-scale study, we evaluated the serum 25(OH) vitamin D concentration in reproductive-aged women with infertility in Japan; however, there was no association between reproductive function and vitamin D levels. Ammonium thiosulfate leaching is a promising alternative to the conventional cyanide method for extracting gold from ores. However, strategies for recovering gold from the leachate are less commercially used due to its low affinity to gold. The present study investigated the recovery of gold from the leachate using iron oxides (hematite, Fe2O3 or magnetite, Fe3O4). Cementation experiments were conducted by mixing 0.15 g of aluminum powder as an electron donor and 0.15 g of an electron mediator (activated carbon, hematite, or magnetite) in 10 mL of ammonium thiosulfate leachate containing 100 mg/L gold ions and 10 mM cupric ions for 24 h at 25 °C. The results of the solution analysis showed that when activated carbon (AC) was used, the gold was recovered together with copper (recoveries were 99.99% for gold and copper). However, selective gold recovery was observed when iron oxides were used, where the gold and copper recoveries were 89.7% and 21% for hematite and 85.9% and 15.4% for magnetite, respectively. An electrochemical experiment was also conducted to determine the galvanic interaction between the electron donor and electron mediator in a conventional electrochemical setup (hematite/magnetite–Al as the working electrode, Pt as the counter electrode, Ag/AgCl as the reference electrode) in a gold–thiosulfate medium. Cyclic voltammetry showed a gold reduction “shoulder-like” peak at −1.0 V using hematite/Al and magnetite/Al electrodes. Chronoamperometry was conducted and operated at a constant voltage (−1.0 V) determined during cyclic voltammetry and further analyzed using SEM-EDX. The results of the SEM-EDX analysis for the cementation products and electrochemical experiments confirmed that the gold was selectively deposited on the iron oxide surface as an electron mediator. Recent studies have uncovered relevant roles of the bone vasculature in bone patterning, morphogenesis, homeostasis, and pathological bone destruction, including osteoporosis and tumor metastasis. This review provides an overview of current topics in the interactive molecular events between endothelial cells and bone cells during bone ontogeny and discusses the future direction of this research area to find novel ways to treat bone diseases. Soil salinity can have various negative consequences on agricultural products, from their quality and production to their aesthetic traits. In this work, the possibility to use salt-affected vegetables, that otherwise would be discarded, as a source of nutraceuticals was explored. To this aim, rocket plants, a vegetable featuring bioactive compounds such as glucosinolates, were exposed to increasing NaCl concentrations in hydroponics and analysed for their content in bioactive compounds. Salt levels higher than 68 mM produced rocket plants that did not comply with European Union regulations and would therefore be considered a waste product. Anyway, our findings, obtained by Liquid Chromatography-High Resolution Mass Spectrometry, demonstrated a significant increase in glucosinolates levels in such salt-affected plants. opening the opportunity for a second life of these market discarded products to be recycled as glucosinolates source. Furthermore, an optimal situation was found at NaCl 34 mM in which not only were the aesthetic traits of rocket plants not affected, but also the plants revealed a significant enrichment in glucosinolates. This can be considered an advantageous situation in which the resulting vegetables still appealed to the market and showed improved nutraceutical aspects. Full article

Fractional-order Butterworth filters of order 1 + α (0 < α < 1) can be implemented by a unified structure, using the method presented in this paper. The main offered benefit is that the cutoff frequencies of the filters are fully controllable using a very simple method and, also, various types of filters (e.g., low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and band-stop) could be realized. Thanks to the employment of a Field Programmable Analog Array device, the implementation of the introduced method is fully reconfigurable, in the sense that various types of filter functions as well as their order are both programmable. About 60% of cases of recurrent pregnancy loss have unexplained etiology. Immunotherapy for unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss is still unestablished. A 36-year-old woman, not obese, had a stillbirth at 22 gestational weeks and a spontaneous abortion at 8 weeks. She had been examined for recurrent pregnancy loss at previous clinics with no significant findings. When she visited our clinic, a hematologic test showed a Th1/Th2 ratio imbalance. Ultrasonography, hysteroscopy, and semen analysis showed no abnormalities. She successfully conceived by embryo transfer in hormone replacement therapy cycle. However, she had a miscarriage at 19 weeks. The baby had no deformities, but a chromosomal test was not performed, according to the parents’ will. The placenta pathologically suggested hemoperfusion problems. Her and her husband’s chromosomal tests showed normal karyotypes. Other examinations revealed a repeated Th1/Th2 ratio imbalance and a high resistance index of uterine radial artery blood flow. She was administered low-dose aspirin, intravenous immunoglobulin, and unfractionated heparin after the second embryo was transferred. Her baby was healthily born by cesarean section at 40 weeks. Intravenous immunoglobulin therapy can be a choice for recurrent miscarriage without risk factors because it has clinically beneficial influences on the patient’s immunological aberration.
