A new case of parthenogenesis in the common smooth-hound shark (Mustelus mustelus), recorded at the Cala Gonone Aquarium (central-eastern Sardinia, Italy) in April 2024, is described as an extension of previous observations. The event involves the production of two offspring originating from a single parthenogenetic reproductive episode, further expanding the available evidence. Genetic analyses excluded paternal contribution, supporting the occurrence of facultative parthenogenesis. The data confirm the recurrence of parthenogenetic reproduction in M. mustelus under captive conditions and document an alternation between two adult females across successive parthenogenetic reproductive events. This recurring pattern supports the hypothesis of a structured reproductive dynamic and suggests the involvement of individual-specific or environmentally mediated factors. These findings contribute to the current understanding of facultative parthenogenesis in elasmobranchs by providing additional empirical evidence across successive reproductive events. The results also offer further insight into the potential adaptive significance of this reproductive mode under conditions of limited mate availability, with implications for the management and conservation of captive populations. Despite their ecological and conservation significance, morphometric relations remain scarce for elasmobranch species in the Mediterranean. This study examined morphometric parameters of the eight elasmobranch species (one shark and seven batoids) presented in the Amvrakikos Gulf that has been designated as a National Park. A total of 1247 specimens were sampled between 2022 and 2025, caught by small-scale fishing vessels using trammel nets, gillnets or bottom longlines and collected through onboard surveys or landing sites monitoring. Linear regressions were applied to describe relations between total length and other body measures (disc length, disc width, fork length), and length measurements and body weight. Results showed strong relations across morphometric traits, with R2 values exceeding 0.655 for most relations. Growth patterns varied: four species (Aetomylaeus bovinus, Dasyatis pastinaca, D. tortonesei, Mustelus mustelus) exhibited positive allometry, one species (D. marmorata) displayed negative allometry and Gymnura altavela showed near-isometric growth. Sexual dimorphism was generally absent, although significant differences were found between sex in disc width slopes for D. marmorata, Myliobatis aquila and Torpedo torpedo, and in length–weight relations for M. mustelus. These findings substantially fill regional data gaps, offering new baseline estimates for rare and threatened elasmobranchs. Full article

Commercial smooth-hound sharks of the genus Mustelus are commonly landed and consumed in Mediterranean fisheries, raising concerns about potential human exposure to persistent contaminants. This study investigated the occurrence of organochlorine compounds (OCs), including hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), together with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in muscle and liver tissues of Mustelus mustelus and Mustelus punctulatus collected in the waters of the Egadi Archipelago (central Mediterranean Sea). OCs were detected in all analyzed samples, with total PCB concentrations reaching higher values in liver compared to muscle tissues, reflecting tissue-specific accumulation and detoxification processes. PFAS were detected in all analyzed muscle samples (1.10–58.5 ng/g w.w.), with PFOS, PFOA and PFNA generally below current European regulatory thresholds, although isolated exceedances were observed. Stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) highlighted differences in trophic ecology between the two species and suggested that feeding habitat and trophic position may influence contaminant exposure patterns, particularly in M. punctulatus. The human health risk assessment, conducted as a screening-level evaluation, indicated potential concern associated with PCB concentrations in liver tissue, while risks associated with muscle consumption were generally lower. Overall, the integration of contaminant analysis and stable isotopes provides insights into organismal exposure pathways and supports the use of smooth-hound sharks as sentinels of contaminant presence in Mediterranean coastal ecosystems. The speckled smooth-hound Mustelus mento is an endemic coastal shark from the southeastern Pacific, currently listed as “Critically Endangered” due to intense fishing pressure and the absence of species-specific management across its distribution range. Between November 2021 and October 2023, 925 individuals were examined from artisanal landings in northern Chile to describe their reproductive biology and embryonic development characteristics. The total length ranged from 27.6–159.3 cm in females and 14.2–165.0 cm in males, with a sex ratio of 1:1.2, which was slightly biased towards females. The estimated size at 50% maturity was 53.6 cm for females and 48.7 cm for males, with 70.6% of females and 66.0% of males caught below these thresholds, indicating a predominance of immature individuals in landings. Nine gravid females (106–139 cm) contained 71 embryos, which were classified into five developmental stages (encapsulated ovum, early organogenesis, fin differentiation, pigmentation and growth, and pre-partum) based on their external morphology and yolk sac reduction. The litter size ranged from 4 to 12 embryos, and the estimated size at birth was 13–14 cm in length. Embryos were recorded only during the summer months, suggesting a seasonal reproductive cycle with parturition in the early autumn. The persistent yolk sac connection throughout development and the absence of placental structures confirm that M. mento exhibits aplacental viviparity. These results document the first population-level description of the reproductive biology of M. mento, redefine its reproductive mode, and provide baseline information essential for implementing species-specific management and conservation measures in Chilean waters. Sharks play critical roles in marine ecosystems as apex or mesopredators, regulating trophic dynamics and ecosystem stability. However, their populations are increasingly threatened due to overexploitation caused by targeted fisheries, bycatch, and illegal activities. This study investigates the feeding ecology and reproductive biology of the shark species Mustelus mustelus, which has been heavily fished across the Mediterranean, leading to significant population declines. A total of 333 specimens were collected between October 2019 and October 2022 from Türkiye’s Aegean Sea, Sea of Marmara, and Levantine Sea coasts. The total lengths of the specimens ranged from 42.1 to 173.0 cm, with an average of 73.5 cm ± 26.8, and their weights ranged from 205 to 22,470 g, with an average of 1840.2 g ± 2525.5. Stomach content analyses revealed that M. mustelus is a benthic predator with a broad diet. Regional and size-based comparisons indicated that crustaceans were the primary food source, followed by teleost fish and mollusks. Ontogenetic dietary shifts were evident, with juveniles feeding predominantly on crustaceans, while adults consumed more teleost fish and mollusca. The reproductive biology analysis showed placental viviparity in M. mustelus, with the smallest observed mature male measuring 75 cm TL and the smallest observed pregnant female measuring 96 cm TL. The uterine fecundity of pregnant females ranged from 8 to 29 embryos. Additionally, the pupping season of M. mustelus in the Aegean Sea was found to occur in March and April. M. mustelus populations have declined dramatically in the western Mediterranean and in many other parts of their range. The scarcity of data on this species in the eastern Mediterranean basin, including Türkiye, is noteworthy. Therefore, this study investigated the populations in the study area from a bioecological perspective and provides fundamental data to support the development of conservation strategies for the species. The small-spotted catshark and the smooth-hound are cartilaginous, carnivorous fish with similar depth ranges in their habitats. These two species are among the most abundant elasmobranchs in the Adriatic Sea and are frequently caught by local fishermen using longline fishing. Despite their ecological similarities, little is known about the physiological differences in their digestive processes. The study of enzymatic digestion in these ecologically relevant species helps to fill the knowledge gap in the understanding of nutrient processing in cartilaginous fish. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine, measure and compare the enzymatic activity of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, non-specific esterase and aminopeptidase. Fish were caught in the central part of the Adriatic Sea between 2021 and 2023. A total of 60 adult individuals were analyzed, with samples taken from six parts of the digestive tract. Histochemical analysis of 1440 slides revealed clear differences in enzyme activity between the two species. In the small-spotted catshark, cellular protein degradation was most pronounced in esophagus, posterior stomach and rectum, whereas in the smooth-hound, it was concentrated in posterior stomach and spiral intestine. Cellular digestion of lipids in the small-spotted catshark appears to occur primarily in the stomach. The results of this study provide new insights into the distribution of cellular digestive enzymes in cartilaginous fish and emphasize the importance of studying the entire digestive tract as an integrated system rather than focusing on individual parts. This study fills an important knowledge gap and contributes to a deeper understanding of digestive physiology, which in turn has implications for species conservation and biological variability. The Eastern Aegean Sea hosts a diverse assemblage of elasmobranchs, many of which are vulnerable or endangered. This study presents a fishery-independent assessment of species composition, catch characteristics, and spatial patterns in bottom trawl fisheries between Lesvos Island and Ayvalik. A total of 48 surveys were conducted between September 2022 and October 2024, identifying nine elasmobranch species, with Scyliorhinus canicula (small-spotted catshark) and Mustelus mustelus (common smooth-hound) dominating the catch. Biological parameters, sex ratios, and condition upon capture and release were recorded, while catch per unit effort (CPUE) and diversity indices were used to evaluate temporal patterns. The survival probability was negatively affected by the trawl duration and elevated temperatures, emphasizing the need for mitigation measures. Spatial models revealed high-density zones that likely function as foraging or nursery grounds. Seasonal shifts in community composition were also evident. Many non-commercial species were discarded irrespective of their size or condition. These findings underscore the ecological importance of this understudied region and support the need for spatially explicit, species-specific management strategies, including gear selectivity improvements, seasonal closures, and Electronic Monitoring. The study offers a critical baseline for enhancing the sustainability of elasmobranch populations in the Eastern Mediterranean. Full article

Fishery products are highly perishable; therefore, effective preservation strategies are essential to maintain their freshness, quality, and shelf life. One promising approach involves the use of edible coatings formulated with natural extracts, such as muicle (Justicia spicigera). This study evaluated the effect of a muicle–chitosan edible coating on the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality of cazon fish (Mustelus lunulatus) fillets stored in ice for 18 days. The muicle extract was obtained by macerating dried leaves for 48 h, and its antibacterial activity was subsequently assessed. A control group (C) and three treatments—muicle extract (ME), chitosan (CH), and a combined muicle–chitosan coating (MECH)—were applied and monitored throughout the storage period. Quality parameters, including pH, colour, water-holding capacity (WHC), texture, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and mesophilic microbial counts, were evaluated. The muicle extract exhibited antibacterial activity, with MIC and IC50 values of 3.01 ± 0.73 and 204.56 ± 20.23 µg/mL against Shewanella putrefaciens, and 0.10 ± 0.07 and 118.09 ± 14.51 µg/mL against Listeria monocytogenes, respectively. Treatments of ME, CH, and MECH significantly improved (p < 0.05) the quality of fillets by reducing TVB-N, pH, and microbial load compared to the control. In conclusion, the muicle extract demonstrated antibacterial potential and, either alone or in combination with chitosan, effectively preserved the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality of cazon fillets during ice storage. Elasmobranchs (Chondrichthyes, Elasmobranchii) are exposed to a variety of gastrointestinal parasites acquired through the ingestion of infected prey. An increasing amount of evidence suggests the usefulness of parasitological information to elucidate aspects of the biology and ecology of sharks and rays, to inform the correct management and conservation of their stocks and the appropriate husbandry of captive specimens. This study aims to identify at the morphological and molecular level the helminth parasites found in the stomachs and intestines of various elasmobranchs accidentally caught by Mediterranean fisheries, with the aim of updating and providing new information on the parasitic fauna of these species. Specimens of smooth-hound Mustelus mustelus, blackspotted smooth-hound Mustelus punctulatus, blue shark Prionace glauca, spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias, lesser-spotted dogfish Scyliorhinus canicula, pelagic stingray Pteroplatytrygon violacea and Mediterranean starry ray Raja asterias were examined. The parasitological examination allowed us to identify the nematode Acanthocheilus rotundatus in the two species of smooth-hounds analyzed, the tapeworm species Scyphophyllidium exiguum, S. prionacis, Anthobothrium caseyi and Nybelinia indica in P. glauca, the nematodes Hysterothylacium aduncum and Proleptus obtusus in S. acanthias and S. canicula, respectively, and finally the nematode Pseudanisakis rajae and the tapeworm Nybelinia sp. in Raja asterias. Some observations represent new reports at a geographical level, in particular, those on A. caseyi in P. glauca and H. aduncum in S. acanthias from the Adriatic Sea, or first host records, such as S. exiguum and N. indica in P. glauca or P. rajae. in R. asterias. The results of this survey represent a contribution to broadening the knowledge of the parasitic fauna of these elasmobranchs in the Mediterranean Sea. From more in-depth future studies, it will be possible to reach more solid evidence and general conclusions on aspects relating to the biology, ecology, and health of the investigated species, offering useful information for their conservation and management. Southern Brazil is home to a large biodiversity of elasmobranchs from the Brazilian coast. Several genera and species of small sharks of the Triakidae family live in this marine environment. Studies on these shark species are scarce, with few genetic data and little information on animal population structures. The present study aimed to sequence the complete mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) of the endangered species Mustelus schmitti (narrownose smooth-hound shark) and to perform a phylogenetic analysis of the Triakidae family. The mtDNA sequenced here was 16,764 bp long and possessed the usual 13 mitochondrial protein coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs (12S and 16S) and a large D-loop DNA sequence, presenting an overall organization similar to other species from the genus Mustelus. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using a dataset containing this new mtDNA and 59 other mitochondrial genomes of the Carcharhiniformes species (including 14 from the Triakidae family), using the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method. All the species of the Triakidae family were clustered into a monophyletic topology group. In addition, polyphyly was observed in Galeorhinus galeus, Hemiatrakis japanica, Triakis megalopterus and Triakis semifasciata. In conclusion, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the genetic diversity of sharks and represents an important step towards the conservation of these endangered animals. Full article

Despite the high diversity of elasmobranch fishes in the Balearic Islands, knowledge of their biology and population dynamics is still scarce. A recent mark-and-recapture experiment off the Balearic Islands tagged 3738 individuals of 23 shark and batoid species during MEDITS and CANAL bottom trawl scientific surveys from June 2021 to August 2023. Retrieval was reported for the sharks Scyliorhinus canicula and Mustelus mustelus, revealing relatively small home ranges for these species (0.2–38.5 km and 7.8–15.3 km for S. canicula and M. mustelus, respectively). Recapture efficiency was higher from scientific surveys than from commercial catches, highlighting potential challenges in collaboration with fishermen and recapture reports. Density estimates obtained from the MEDITS bottom trawl survey suggest a much larger population for S. canicula than estimates from the mark–recapture data, indicating MEDITS density estimates for this species may be overestimated due to its scavenger behavior perhaps favoring individuals searching for discards aggregated in the fishing grounds. Elasmobranchs have an ancestral reproductive system, which offers insights into vertebrate reproductive evolution. Despite their unchanged design over 400 million years, they evolved complex mechanisms ensuring reproductive success. However, human activities induced a significant decline in elasmobranch populations worldwide. In the Mediterranean basin, the smooth-hound shark (Mustelus mustelus) is one of the species that are considered vulnerable to human activities. Conservation efforts necessitate a thorough understanding of its reproductive strategy. This study focused on mature male specimens of smooth-hound sharks that were captured in the Adriatic area and successively analyzed to provide, for the first time, a histologically detailed description of testicular development in the species. Seven phases of the spermatogenesis process were identified, along with the macromolecular characterization of cells obtained using Fourier-transform infrared imaging. Histological analysis showed structural and cellular features similar to those documented in the spermatocysts of other elasmobranchs. The examination of the evolution and migration of both germinative and Sertoli cells at each phase revealed their close connection. Furthermore, different expression levels of lipids, proteins, and phosphates (DNA) at each spermatogenesis stage were observed. This research provided new information on spermatogenesis in the common smooth-hound shark, which is crucial for conservation efforts against population decline and anthropogenic pressures. While the general diet of Mediterranean elasmobranchs has been widely studied, little is known about food partitioning and competition among sympatric species, despite these being important forces structuring marine communities. Using stomach content and stable isotope analyses, we investigated diet and trophic levels and evaluated the diet overlap and partitioning of Scyliorhinus canicula, Mustelus mustelus, and M. punctulatus in the northwestern Adriatic Sea. These shark species were confirmed as opportunistic mesopredators, but significant differences in their diets emerged. The two bentho-demersal Mustelus species had a larger trophic overlap with S. canicula than between each other. Given the pronounced morphological similarity of these two Mustelus species, this is likely a strategy to limit competition. The strictly benthic S. canicula showed a more varied diet compared to the other species. Stable isotope analysis highlighted that despite the smaller size and overlapping diets, S. canicula occupied a slightly higher trophic level. A better characterization of the trophic role of these species in the food web of the basin can be obtained from these data. At an ecosystem level, this information is essential to evaluate the possible consequences of the decline or recovery of the population of these exploited species. Full article

Bioenergetic models are tools that allow the evaluation of the effect of environmental variables on fish growth. Successful implementation of this approach has been achieved in a few elasmobranch species. Our objective was to develop a bioenergetic model for Mustelus schmitti. The model developed showed a good fit to the field data available and accurately described the growth of this species. The practical example developed in this study provides novel population estimates of prey consumption and daily ration for the species. Results also indicate that this species would be susceptible to the effects of climate change. In the simulated climate change scenarios, the energy budget of M. schmitti was significantly altered, with increased food consumption and impaired growth. While there exists a number of limitations for the model developed in this article, namely its limitation to immature individuals, and its restricted temperature model, it provides an important tool for the management of this and other shark populations under heavy exploitation. Elasmobranchs are among the marine species more threatened by overfishing. Their conservation is often impaired by the lack of knowledge of species’ life history traits. We filled knowledge gaps on age and growth of two threatened smooth-hound sharks (Mustelus mustelus, Mm; Mustelus punctulatus, Mp) in the central Mediterranean Sea, combining standard vertebrae analysis with growth increment data from a tagging survey. Our data revealed that the two species grow at a faster rate than previously estimated using vertebrae reading only. The maximum age/size found was higher for Mm (16 years, 170 cm TL) than Mp (8 years, 120 cm TL), the first species attaining larger size-at-age than the second one. Mp reaches maturity at earlier ages (A50 3 years for both females and males) than Mm (A50 females: 4 years; males: 3 years). The use of the tag-recapture method to validate the growth rate, firstly derived by sectioned vertebrae readings, highlighted the presence of false check marks. The new estimates of growth and longevity have important implications for the assessment of natural mortality, productivity, and stock resilience to fishing pressure which, combined with the high site fidelity highlighted by tagging data, may have crucial implications for the conservation of these two threatened sharks in the Mediterranean Sea.
