Mushrooms are eukaryotic organisms with absorptive heterotrophic nutrition, capable of feeding on organic matter rich in cellulose and lignocellulose. Since ancient times, they have been considered allies and, in certain cultures, they were seen as magical beings or food of the gods. Of the great variety of edible mushrooms identified worldwide, less than 2% are traded on the market. Although mushrooms have been valued for their multiple nutritional and healing benefits, some cultures perceive them as toxic and do not accept them in their culinary practices. Despite the existing skepticism, several researchers are promoting the potential of edible mushrooms. There are two main methods of mushroom cultivation: solid-state fermentation and submerged fermentation. The former is the most widely used and simplest, since the fungus grows in its natural environment; in the latter, the fungus grows suspended without developing a fruiting body. In addition, submerged fermentation is easily monitored and scalable. Both systems are important and have their limitations. This article discusses the main methods used to increase the performance of submerged fermentation with emphasis on the modes of operation used, types of bioreactors and application of morphological bioengineering of filamentous fungi, and especially the use of intelligent automatic control technologies and the use of non-invasive monitoring in fermentation systems thanks to the development of machine learning (ML), neural networks, and the use of big data, which will allow more accurate decisions to be made in the fermentation of filamentous fungi in submerged environments with improvements in production yields. The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly accelerated progress across various research domains, with growing interest in plant science due to its substantial economic potential. However, the integration of AI with digital vegetation analysis remains underexplored, largely due to the absence of large-scale, real-world plant datasets, which are crucial for advancing this field. To address this gap, we introduce the PP3D dataset—a meticulously labeled collection of about 500 potted plants represented as 3D point clouds, featuring fine-grained annotations for approximately 20 species. The PP3D dataset provides 3D phenotypic data for about 20 plant species spanning model organisms (e.g., Arabidopsis thaliana), potted plants (e.g., Foliage plants, Flowering plants), and horticultural plants (e.g., Solanum lycopersicum), covering most of the common important plant species. Leveraging this dataset, we propose the panoptic plant recognition task, which combines semantic segmentation (stems and leaves) with leaf instance segmentation. To tackle this challenge, we present SCNet, a novel dual-representation learning network designed specifically for plant point cloud segmentation. SCNet integrates two key branches: a cylindrical feature extraction branch for robust spatial encoding and a sequential slice feature extraction branch for detailed structural analysis. By efficiently propagating features between these representations, SCNet achieves superior flexibility and computational efficiency, establishing a new baseline for panoptic plant recognition and paving the way for future AI-driven research in plant science. Background: Computed tomography urography (CTU) is routinely used to evaluate the upper urinary tract in patients with hematuria. CTU may detect incidental findings outside the urinary tract, but it remains unclear if this adds value. This study aimed to develop a deep learning algorithm that automatically segments and selectively visualizes the urinary tract on CTU. Methods: The urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, and urinary bladder) was manually segmented on 2 mm dual-phase CTU slices of 111 subjects. With this dataset, a deep learning-based AI was trained to automatically segment and selectively visualize the urinary tract on CTU scans (including accompanying unenhanced CT scans), which we dub “focused view CTU”. Focused view CTU was technically optimized and tested in 39 subjects with hematuria. Results: The technically optimized focused view CTU algorithm provided complete visualization of 97.4% of kidneys, 80.8% of ureters, and 94.9% of urinary bladders. All urinary tract organs were completely visualized in 66.6% of cases. In these cases (excluding 33.3% of cases with incomplete visualization), focused view CTU intrinsically achieved a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 100.0%, 92.3%, 92.9%, and 100.0% for lesions in the urinary tract compared to unmodified CT, although interrater agreement was moderate (κ = 0.528). All incidental findings were successfully hidden by focused view CTU. Conclusions: Focused view CTU provides adequate urinary tract segmentation in most cases, but further research is needed to optimize the technique (segmentation does not succeed in about one-third of cases). It offers selective urinary tract visualization, potentially aiding in assessing relevance and cost-effectiveness of detecting incidental findings in hematuria patients through a prospective randomized trial. Artificial intelligence has taken a seat at the executive table and is threatening the fact that human beings are the only ones who should be in a position of power. This article gives conjectures on the future of leadership in which managers will collaborate with learning algorithms in the Neural Adaptive Artificial Intelligence Leadership Model, which is informed by the transformational literature on leadership and socio-technical systems, as well as the literature on algorithmic governance. We assessed the model with thirty in-depth interviews, system-level traces of behavior, and a verified survey, and we explored six hypotheses that relate to algorithmic delegation and ethical oversight, as well as human judgment versus machine insight in terms of agility and performance. We discovered that decisions are made quicker, change is more effective, and interaction is more vivid where agile practices and good digital understanding exist, and statistical tests propose that human flexibility and definite governance augment those benefits as well. It is single-industry research that contains self-reported measures, which causes research to be limited to other industries that contain more objective measures. Practitioners are provided with a practical playbook on how to make algorithmic jobs meaningful, introduce moral fail-safes, and build learning feedback to ensure people and machines are kept in line. Socially, the practice is capable of minimizing bias and establishing inclusion by visualizing accountability in the code and practice. Filling the gap between the theory of leadership and the reality of algorithms, the study provides a model of intelligent systems leading in organizations that can be reproduced. Full article

Shift organizations in automotive manufacturing often rely on manual task allocation, resulting in inefficiencies, human error, and increased workload for supervisors. This research introduces an automated solution using the Kuhn-Munkres algorithm, integrated with the Moodle learning management system, to optimize task assignments based on operator qualifications and task complexity. Simulations conducted with real industrial data demonstrate that the proposed method meets operational requirements, both logically and mathematically. The system improves the start of shifts by assigning simpler tasks initially, enhancing operator confidence and reducing the need for assistance. It also ensures that task assignments align with required training levels, improving quality and process reliability. For industrial practitioners, the approach provides a practical tool to reduce planning time, human error, and supervisory burden, while increasing shift productivity. From an academic perspective, the study contributes to applied operations research and workforce optimization, offering a replicable model grounded in real-world applications. The integration of algorithmic task allocation with training systems enables a more accurate matching of workforce capabilities to production demands. This study aims to support data-driven decision-making in shift management, with the potential to enhance operational efficiency and encourage timely start of work, thereby possibly contributing to smoother production flow and improved organizational performance. As artificial intelligence (AI) technology becomes increasingly widespread in organizations, its impact on individual employees’ psychology and behavior has garnered growing attention. Existing research primarily focuses on AI’s effects on organizational performance and job design, with limited exploration of its mechanisms influencing individual employees, particularly in the critical area of risk-taking behavior, which is essential to organizational innovation. This research develops a moderated mediation model grounded in social cognitive theory (SCT) to explore how AI usage affects the willingness to take risks. A three-wave longitudinal study collected and statistically analyzed data from 442 participants. The findings reveal that (1) AI usage significantly enhances employees’ willingness to take risks; (2) self-efficacy serves as a partial mediator in the connection between AI usage and the willingness to take risks; and (3) learning goal orientation moderates both the relationship between AI usage and self-efficacy, as well as the mediating effect. This research enhances our understanding of AI’s impact on organizational behavior and provides valuable insights for human resource management in the AI era. Full article

This research develops a dual physics-based machine learning system to forecast fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for a 100 m oil tanker across six operational scenarios: Original, Paint, Advanced Propeller, Fin, Bulbous Bow, and Combined. The combination of hydrodynamic calculations with Monte Carlo simulations provides a solid foundation for training machine learning models, particularly in cases where dataset restrictions are present. The XGBoost model demonstrated superior performance compared to Support Vector Regression, Gaussian Process Regression, Random Forest, and Shallow Neural Network models, achieving near-zero prediction errors that closely matched physics-based calculations. The physics-based analysis demonstrated that the Combined scenario, which combines hull coatings with bulbous bow modifications, produced the largest fuel consumption reduction (5.37% at 15 knots), followed by the Advanced Propeller scenario. The results demonstrate that user inputs (e.g., engine power: 870 kW, speed: 12.7 knots) match the Advanced Propeller scenario, followed by Paint, which indicates that advanced propellers or hull coatings would optimize efficiency. The obtained insights help ship operators modify their operational parameters and designers select essential modifications for sustainable operations. The model maintains its strength at low speeds, where fuel consumption is minimal, making it applicable to other oil tankers. The hybrid approach provides a new tool for maritime efficiency analysis, yielding interpretable results that support International Maritime Organization objectives, despite starting with a limited dataset. The model requires additional research to enhance its predictive accuracy using larger datasets and real-time data collection, which will aid in achieving global environmental stewardship. Objectives: Automatic tip localization is critical in ultrasound (US)-guided interventions. Although deep learning (DL) has been widely used for precise tip detection, existing methods are limited by the availability of real puncture data and expert annotations. Methods: To address these challenges, we propose a novel method that uses synthetic US puncture data to pre-train DL-based tip detectors, improving their generalization. Synthetic data are generated by fusing clinical US images of healthy controls with tips created using generative DL models. To ensure clinical diversity, we constructed a dataset from scans of 20 volunteers, covering 20 organs or anatomical regions, obtained with six different US machines and performed by three physicians with varying expertise levels. Tip diversity is introduced by generating a wide range of synthetic tips using a denoising probabilistic diffusion model (DDPM). This method synthesizes a large volume of diverse US puncture data, which are used to pre-train tip detectors, followed by subsequently training with real puncture data. Results: Our method outperforms MSCOCO pre-training on a clinical puncture dataset, achieving a 1.27–7.19% improvement in AP0.1:0.5 with varying numbers of real samples. State-of-the-art detectors also show performance gains of 1.14–1.76% when applying the proposed method. Conclusions: The experimental results demonstrate that our method enhances the generalization of tip detectors without relying on expert annotations or large amounts of real data, offering significant potential for more accurate visual guidance during US-guided interventions and broader clinical applications. The development of big data analytics in healthcare has created a demand for privacy-conscious and scalable machine learning algorithms that can allow the use of patient information across different healthcare organizations. In this study, the difficulties that come with traditional federated learning frameworks in healthcare sectors, such as scalability, computational effectiveness, and preserving patient privacy for numerous healthcare systems, are discussed. In this work, a new conceptual model known as Hierarchical Federated Learning (HFL) for large, integrated healthcare organizations that include several institutions is proposed. The first level of aggregation forms regional centers where local updates are first collected and then sent to the second level of aggregation to form the global update, thus reducing the message-passing traffic and improving the scalability of the HFL architecture. Furthermore, the HFL framework leveraged more robust privacy characteristics such as Local Differential Privacy (LDP), Gaussian Differential Privacy (GDP), Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC) and Homomorphic Encryption (HE). In addition, a Novel Aggregated Gradient Perturbation Mechanism is presented to alleviate noise in model updates and maintain privacy and utility. The performance of the proposed HFL framework is evaluated on real-life healthcare datasets and an artificial dataset created using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), showing that the proposed HFL framework is better than other methods. Our approach provided an accuracy of around 97% and 30% less privacy leakage compared to the existing models of FLBM-IoT and PPFLB. The proposed HFL approach can help to find the optimal balance between privacy and model performance, which is crucial for healthcare applications and scalable and secure solutions. Full article

Multi-organ medical image segmentation is essential for accurate clinical diagnosis, effective treatment planning, and reliable prognosis, yet it remains challenging due to complex backgrounds, irrelevant noise, unclear organ boundaries, and wide variations in organ size. To address these challenges, the boundary feature learning and enhancement network is proposed. This model integrates a dedicated boundary learning module combined with an auxiliary loss function to strengthen the semantic correlations between boundary pixels and regional features, thus reducing category mis-segmentation. Additionally, channel and positional compound attention mechanisms are employed to selectively filter features and minimize background interference. To further enhance multi-scale representation capabilities, the dynamic scale-aware context module dynamically selects and fuses multi-scale features, significantly improving the model’s adaptability. The model achieves average Dice similarity coefficients of 81.67% on synapse and 90.55% on ACDC datasets, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. This network significantly improves segmentation by emphasizing boundary accuracy, noise reduction, and multi-scale adaptability, enhancing clinical diagnostics and treatment planning. Full article

Background: Automated surgical navigation can be separated into three stages: (1) organ identification and localization, (2) identification of the organs requiring further surgery, and (3) automated planning of the operation path and steps. With its ideal visual and operating system, the da Vinci surgical system provides a promising platform for automated surgical navigation. This study focuses on the first step in automated surgical navigation by identifying organs in gynecological surgery. Methods: Due to the difficulty of collecting da Vinci gynecological endoscopy data, we propose DeepVinci, a novel end-to-end high-performance encoder–decoder network based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for pixel-level organ semantic segmentation. Specifically, to overcome the drawback of a limited field of view, we incorporate a densely multi-scale pyramid module and feature fusion module, which can also enhance the global context information. In addition, the system integrates an edge supervision network to refine the segmented results on the decoding side. Results: Experimental results show that DeepVinci can achieve state-of-the-art accuracy, obtaining dice similarity coefficient and mean pixel accuracy values of 0.684 and 0.700, respectively. Conclusions: The proposed DeepVinci network presents a practical and competitive semantic segmentation solution for da Vinci gynecological surgery. Full article

Decoding the Primacy of Transportation Emissions of Formaldehyde Pollution in an Urban Atmosphere

Understanding the differential impacts of emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on formaldehyde (HCHO) levels is pivotal to effectively mitigating key photochemical radical precursors, thereby enhancing the regulation of atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) and ozone formation. This investigation systematically selected and analyzed year-long VOC measurements across three urban zones in Shenzhen, China. Photochemical age correction methods were implemented to develop the initial concentrations of VOCs before source apportionment; then Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) modeling resolved six primary sources: solvent usage (28.6–47.9%), vehicle exhaust (24.2–31.2%), biogenic emission (13.8–18.1%), natural gas (8.5–16.3%), gasoline evaporation (3.2–8.9%), and biomass burning (0.3–2.4%). A machine learning (ML) framework incorporating Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) was subsequently applied to evaluate the influence of six emission sources on HCHO concentrations while accounting for reaction time adjustments. This machine learning-driven nonlinear analysis demonstrated that vehicle exhaust nearly always emerged as the primary anthropogenic contributor in diverse functional zones and different seasons, with gasoline evaporation as another key contributor, while the traditional reactivity metric method, ozone formation potential (OFP), tended to underestimate the role of the two sources. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly being applied across the transplantation care pathway, supporting tasks such as donor–recipient matching, immunological risk stratification, early detection of graft dysfunction, and optimisation of immunosuppressive therapy. This review provides a structured synthesis of current AI applications in transplantation, with a focus on underrepresented areas including real-time graft viability assessment, adaptive immunosuppression, and cross-organ immune modelling. The review also examines the translational infrastructure needed for clinical implementation, such as federated learning, explainable AI (XAI), and data governance. Evidence suggests that AI-based models can improve predictive accuracy and clinical decision support when compared to conventional approaches. However, limitations related to data quality, algorithmic bias, model transparency, and integration into clinical workflows remain. Addressing these challenges through rigorous validation, ethical oversight, and interdisciplinary collaboration will be necessary to support the safe and effective use of AI in transplant medicine. Three-dimensional semantic segmentation is a fundamental problem in computer vision with a wide range of applications in autonomous driving, robotics, and urban scene understanding. The task involves assigning semantic labels to each point in a 3D point cloud, a data representation that is inherently unstructured, irregular, and spatially sparse. In recent years, deep learning has become the dominant framework for addressing this task, leading to a broad variety of models and techniques designed to tackle the unique challenges posed by 3D data. This survey presents a comprehensive overview of deep learning methods for 3D semantic segmentation. We organize the literature into a taxonomy that distinguishes between supervised and unsupervised approaches. Supervised methods are further classified into point-based, projection-based, voxel-based, and hybrid architectures, while unsupervised methods include self-supervised learning strategies, generative models, and implicit representation techniques. In addition to presenting and categorizing these approaches, we provide a comparative analysis of their performance on widely used benchmark datasets, discuss key challenges such as generalization, model transferability, and computational efficiency, and examine the limitations of current datasets. The survey concludes by identifying potential directions for future research in this rapidly evolving field. Full article

Revealing the Ecological Security Pattern in China’s Ecological Civilization Demonstration Area

The construction and maintenance of an ecological security pattern (ESP) are important for promoting the regional development of ecological civilizations, realizing sustainable and healthy development, and creating a harmonious and beautiful space for human beings and nature to thrive. Traditional construction methods have the limitations of a single dimension, a single method, and excessive human subjective intervention for source and corridor identification, without considering the multidimensional quality of the sources and the structural connectivity and resilience optimization of the corridors. Therefore, an ecological civilization demonstration area (Jiangxi Province) was used as the study area, a new research method for ESP was proposed, and an empirical study was conducted. To evaluate ecosystem service (ES) importance–disturbance–risk and extract sustainability sources through the deep embedded clustering–self-organizing map (DEC–SOM) deep unsupervised learning clustering algorithm, ecological networks (ENs) were constructed by applying the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) gravity model and circuit theory. The ENs were then optimized to improve performance by combining the comparative advantages of the two approaches in terms of structural connectivity and resilience. A comparative analysis of EN performance was constructed among different functional control zones, and the ESP was constructed to include 42 ecological sources, 134 corridors, 210 restoration nodes, and 280 protection nodes. An ESP of ‘1 nucleus, 3 belts, 6 zones, and multiple corridors’ was constructed, and the key restoration components and protection functions were clarified. This study offers a valuable reference for ecological management, protection, and restoration and provides insights into the promotion of harmonious symbiosis between human beings and nature and sustainable regional development.
