Promoting sustainable development requires a clear understanding of how short-term fluctuations in anthropogenic emissions affect urban environmental quality. This is especially relevant for cities experiencing rapid industrial changes or emergency policy interventions. Among key environmental concerns, variations in ambient pollutants like ozone (O3) are closely tied to both public health and long-term sustainability goals. However, traditional chemical transport models often face challenges in accurately estimating emission changes and providing timely assessments. In contrast, statistical approaches such as the difference-in-differences (DID) model utilize observational data to improve evaluation accuracy and efficiency. This study leverages the synthetic difference-in-differences (SDID) approach, which integrates the strengths of both DID and the synthetic control method (SCM), to provide a more reliable and accurate analysis of the impacts of interventions on city-level air quality. Using Shanghai’s 2022 lockdown as a case study, we compare the deweathered ozone (O3) concentration in Shanghai to a counterfactual constructed from a weighted average of cities in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) that did not undergo lockdown. The quasi-natural experiment reveals an average increase of 4.4 μg/m3 (95% CI: 0.24–8.56) in Shanghai’s maximum daily 8 h O3 concentration attributable to the lockdown. The SDID method reduces reliance on the parallel trends assumption and improves the estimate stability through unit- and time-specific weights. Multiple robustness checks confirm the reliability of these findings, underscoring the efficacy of the SDID approach in quantitatively evaluating the causal impact of emission perturbations on air quality. This study provides credible causal evidence of the environmental impact of short-term policy interventions, highlighting the utility of SDID in informing adaptive air quality management. The findings support the development of timely, evidence-based strategies for sustainable urban governance and environmental policy design. Full article

Carbon emissions from freshwater aquaculture can exacerbate the greenhouse effect, thereby impacting human life and health. Consequently, it is of great significance to explore the carbon peak process and the role of emission reduction data in China’s freshwater aquaculture industry. This study innovatively employs the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index model (LMDI) and the Tapio decoupling model to conduct an in-depth analysis of the relationship between carbon emissions and output values in the freshwater aquaculture industry, accurately identifying the main driving factors. Meanwhile, the global and local Moran’s I indices are introduced to analyze its spatial correlation from a new perspective. The results indicate that from 2013 to 2023, carbon emissions from China’s freshwater aquaculture industry exhibited a quasi-“N”-shaped trend, reaching a peak of 38 million tons in 2015. East China was the primary contributor to carbon emissions, accounting for 46%, while South China, Central China, and Northeast China each had an average annual share of around 14%, with Southwest, North China, and Northwest China contributing relatively small proportions. The global Moran’s I index showed a decreasing trend, with a p-value ≤ 0.0010 and a z-score > 3.3, indicating a 99% significant spatial correlation. High-high clusters were concentrated in some provinces of East China, while low-low clusters were found in Northwest, North, and Southwest China. The level of fishery economic development positively drove carbon emissions, whereas freshwater aquaculture production efficiency, industrial structure, and the scale of the aquaculture population had negative effects on carbon emissions. During the study period, carbon emissions exhibited three states: weak decoupling, strong decoupling, and expansive negative decoupling, with alternating strong and weak decoupling occurring after 2015. Invasive plant species pose an increasing threat to mangroves globally. This study assessed the impact of Paspalum vaginatum invasion on carbon loss and early recovery following four years of restoration in a mangrove forest with Rhizophora racemosa in Benin. Organic carbon was quantified in the total biomass, including both aboveground and belowground components, as well as in the soil to a depth of −50 cm. In addition, soil gas fluxes of CO2, CH4, and N2O were measured. Three sites were evaluated: a conserved mangrove, a site degraded by P. vaginatum, and the same site post-restoration via hydrological rehabilitation and reforestation. Invasion significantly reduced carbon storage, especially in soil, due to lower biomass, incorporation of low C/N ratio organic residues, and compaction. Restoration recovered 7.8% of the total biomass carbon compared to the conserved mangrove site, although soil organic carbon did not rise significantly in the short term. However, improvements in deep soil C/N ratios (15–30 and 30–50 cm) suggest enhanced soil organic matter recalcitrance linked to R. racemosa reforestation. Soil CO2 emissions dropped by 60% at the restored site, underscoring restoration’s potential to mitigate early carbon loss. These results highlight the need to control invasive species and suggest that restoration can generate additional social benefits. Full article

Vehicle emissions, as a source of air pollution and greenhouse gases, have a significant impact on the environment and climate change. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have the potential to reduce air pollution and GHGs. However, BEVs often attract the criticism that their benefits are minimal as the power plant emissions compensate for emissions from the tailpipes of vehicles. This study compared two scenarios: scenario A considers all vehicles as internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), and scenario B considers all vehicles as BEVs. The study used the City of San Antonio, Texas, as the study area. The study also focused on the seasonal and spatial variation in ICEV emissions. The results indicate that scenario A has a considerably higher volume of emissions than scenario B. For ICEVs, PM2.5 emissions were up to 50% higher in rural areas than urban areas, but 45% lower for unrestricted versus restricted conditions. CO2 emissions were highly affected by seasonal variations, with a 51% decrease from winter to summer. The full adoption of BEVs could reduce CO2 and N2O emissions by 99% and 58% per km, especially for natural gas power resources. Therefore, BEVs play a significant role in reducing emissions from the transportation sector. Full article

Renewable fuels produced from animal- and plant-based edible oils have emerged as an alternative to oil and natural gas. Burgeoning interest in renewables can be attributed to the rapid depletion of fossil fuels caused by the global energy demand and the environmental advantages of renewables, specifically reduced emissions of greenhouse gases. An important property of the feedstock that is crucial for the conversion of edible oils to renewable fuels is the total acid number (TAN), as even a small increase in TAN for the feedstock can lead to corrosion of the catalyst in the refining process. Currently, the TAN is determined by potentiometric titration, which is time-consuming, expensive, and requires the preparation of reagents. As part of an effort to promote the use of renewable fuels, a partial least squares regression method with orthogonal signal correction to remove spectral information related to the sample background was developed to determine the TAN from the mid-infrared (IR) spectra of the feedstock. Digitally blended mid-IR spectral data were generated to fill in regions of the PLS calibration where there were very few samples. By combining experimental and digitally blended mid-IR spectral data to ensure adequate sample representation in all regions of the spectra–property calibration and better understand the spectra–property relationship through the identification of sample outliers in the original data that can be difficult to detect because of swamping, a PLS regression model for TAN (R2 = 0.992, cross-validated root mean square error = 0.468, and bias = 0.0036) has been developed from 118 experimental and digitally blended mid-IR spectra of commercial feedstock. Thus, feedstock whose TAN value is too high for refining can be flagged using the proposed mid-IR method, which is faster and easier to use than the current titrimetric method. Full article

Measuring methane (CH4) emissions from dairy systems is crucial for advancing sustainable agricultural practices aimed at mitigating climate change. However, current CH4 measurement techniques are primarily designed for controlled research settings and are not readily scalable to diverse production environments. Thus, there is a need to develop accessible, production-level methods for estimating CH4 emissions. This review examines the relationship between enteric CH4 emissions and milk fatty acid (FA) composition, highlights key FA groups with potential as biomarkers for indirect CH4 estimation, and outlines critical factors of predictive model development. Several milk FAs exhibit strong and consistent correlations to CH4 emissions, supporting their utility as predictive biomarkers. Saturated and branched-chain FAs are generally positively associated with CH4 emissions, while unsaturated FAs, including linolenic acid, conjugated linoleic acids, and odd-chain FAs, are typically negatively associated. Variability in the strength and direction of correlations across studies is often attributable to differences in diet or lactation stage. Similarly, differences in experimental design, data processing, and model development contribute to much of the variation observed in predictive equations across studies. Future research should aim to (1) identify milk FAs that consistently correlate with CH4 emissions regardless of diet, (2) develop robust and standardized prediction models, and (3) prioritize the external validation of prediction models across herds and production systems. The recent losses and damages due to climate change have destabilized the insurance industry. As global warming is one of the most critical aspects of climate change, it is essential to investigate to what extent greenhouse gas emissions affect the financial stability of insurers. Insurers typically do not emit substantial greenhouse gases directly, while their underwriting and investment activities play a substantial role in enabling companies that do. This article uses panel data regressions to analyze companies in all insurance segments and in all geographic regions of the world from 2004 to 2023. The main finding is that insurers that increase their greenhouse gas emissions become financially unstable. This result is consistent in all three scopes (scope 1, scope 2, and scope 3) of emissions. Furthermore, the findings reveal that this impact is related to reserves and reinsurance. Specifically, reserves increase with greenhouse gas emissions, while premiums ceded to reinsurers decline. Thus, high-emissions insurers retain a significant share of carbon risk and eventually become financially weak. The results encourage several policy recommendations, highlighting the need for instruments that improve the assessment and disclosure of insurers’ carbon footprints. This is crucial to achieving environmental targets and improving the stability of both the insurance market and the economic system. Full article

Atmospheric climate science lacks the capacity to integrate thermodynamics with the gravitational potential of air in a classical quantum theory. To what extent can we identify Carnot’s ideal heat engine cycle in reversible isothermal and isentropic phases between dual temperatures partitioning heat flow with coupled work processes in the atmosphere? Using statistical action mechanics to describe Carnot’s cycle, the maximum rate of work possible can be integrated for the working gases as equal to variations in the absolute Gibbs energy, estimated as sustaining field quanta consistent with Carnot’s definition of heat as caloric. His treatise of 1824 even gave equations expressing work potential as a function of differences in temperature and the logarithm of the change in density and volume. Second, Carnot’s mechanical principle of cooling caused by gas dilation or warming by compression can be applied to tropospheric heat–work cycles in anticyclones and cyclones. Third, the virial theorem of Lagrange and Clausius based on least action predicts a more accurate temperature gradient with altitude near 6.5–6.9 °C per km, requiring that the Gibbs rotational quantum energies of gas molecules exchange reversibly with gravitational potential. This predicts a diminished role for the radiative transfer of energy from the atmosphere to the surface, in contrast to the Trenberth global radiative budget of ≈330 watts per square metre as downwelling radiation. The spectral absorptivity of greenhouse gas for surface radiation into the troposphere enables thermal recycling, sustaining air masses in Lagrangian action. This obviates the current paradigm of cooling with altitude by adiabatic expansion. The virial-action theorem must also control non-reversible heat–work Carnot cycles, with turbulent friction raising the surface temperature. Dissipative surface warming raises the surface pressure by heating, sustaining the weight of the atmosphere to varying altitudes according to latitude and seasonal angles of insolation. New predictions for experimental testing are now emerging from this virial-action hypothesis for climate, linking vortical energy potential with convective and turbulent exchanges of work and heat, proposed as the efficient cause setting the thermal temperature of surface materials. This dataset presents environmental observations collected in August 2021 from 18 port and harbor sites located around Jeju Island, Korea. It includes physical, biogeochemical, and greenhouse gas (GHG) variables measured in surface seawater, such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll-a, pH, total alkalinity, and dissolved inorganic carbon. Concentrations and air–sea fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide (CO2) were also quantified. All measurements were conducted following standardized analytical protocols, and certified reference materials and duplicate analyses were used to ensure data accuracy. Consequently, the dataset revealed that elevated nutrient accumulation in port and harbor waters and GHG concentrations tended to be higher at sites with stronger land-based influence. During August 2021, most sites functioned as sources of N2O, CH4, and CO2 to the atmosphere. This integrated dataset offers valuable insights into the influence of anthropogenic and hydrological factors on coastal GHG dynamics and provides a foundation for future studies across diverse semi-enclosed marine systems. Population growth has led to an increased volume of wastewater from industrial, domestic, and municipal sources, contaminating aquatic bodies in the state of Veracruz. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a water treatment system incorporating a DAF stage, followed by the cultivation of a microalgal consortium to eliminate pollutants from the blended effluent. The cultivation of Nannochloropsis oculata in wastewater entailed the assessment of a single variable (operating pressure) within the DAF system, in conjunction with two supplementary variables (residence time and F:M ratio), resulting in removal efficiencies of 70% for CODt, 77.24% for CODs, 78.34% for nitrogen, and 77% for total organic carbon. The water sample was found to contain elevated levels of organic matter and pollutants, beyond the permitted limits set forth in NOM-001-SEMARNAT-2021. The obtained removal percentages indicate that the suggested physicochemical–biological process (DAF-microalgae) is a suitable method for treating mixed wastewater. This approach reduces atmospheric pollution by sequestering greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide through the photosynthetic activity of N. oculata cells, so facilitating the production of oxygen and biomass while limiting their accumulation in the atmosphere. Livestock farming is a vital component of global food security, yet it remains a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane (CH4), which has a global warming potential 28 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2). This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge surrounding the sources, biological mechanisms, and mitigation strategies related to CH4 emissions from ruminant livestock. We first explore the process of methanogenesis within the rumen, detailing the role of methanogenic archaea and the environmental factors influencing CH4 production. A thorough assessment of both direct and indirect methods used to quantify CH4 emissions is presented, including in vitro techniques (e.g., syringe method, batch culture, RUSITEC), in vivo techniques (e.g., respiration chambers, Greenfeed, laser CH4 detectors), and statistical modeling approaches. The advantages and limitations of each method are critically analyzed in terms of accuracy, cost, feasibility, and applicability to different farming systems. We then examine a wide range of mitigation strategies, organized into four core pillars: (1) animal and feed management (e.g., genetic selection, pasture quality improvement), (2) diet formulation (e.g., feed additives such as oils, tannins, saponins, and seaweed), (3) rumen manipulation (e.g., probiotics, ionophores, defaunation, vaccination), and (4) manure management practices and policy-level interventions. These strategies are evaluated not only for their environmental impact but also for their economic and practical viability in diverse livestock systems. By integrating technological innovations with sustainable agricultural practices, this review highlights pathways to reduce CH4 emissions while maintaining animal productivity. It aims to support decision-makers, researchers, and livestock producers in the global effort to transition toward climate-smart, low-emission livestock farming. Full article

Aviation is widely recognised to have global-scale climate impacts through the formation of ozone (O3) in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS), driven by emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX). Ozone is known to be one of the most potent greenhouse gases formed from the interaction of aircraft emission plumes with atmospheric species. This paper follows up on previous research, where a Photochemical Trajectory Model was shown to be a robust measure of ozone formation along flight trajectories post-flight. We use a combination of a global Lagrangian chemistry-transport model and a box model to quantify the impacts of aircraft NOX on UTLS ozone over a five-day timescale. This work expands on the spatial and temporal range, as well as the chemical accuracy reported previously, with a greater range of NOX chemistry relevant chemical species. Based on these models, route optimisation has been investigated, through the use of network theory and algorithms. This is to show the potential inclusion of an understanding of climate-sensitive regions of the atmosphere on route planning can have on aviation’s impact on Earth’s Thermal Radiation balance with existing resources and technology. Optimised flight trajectories indicated reductions in O3 formation per unit NOX are in the range 1–40% depending on the spatial aspect of the flight. Temporally, local winter times and equatorial regions are generally found to have the most significant O3 formation per unit NOX; moreover, hotspots were found over the Pacific and Indian Ocean. The cement industry, a foundation of global infrastructure development, significantly contributes to environmental pollution. Key sources of pollution include dust emissions; greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide; and the release of toxic substances such as heavy metals and particulate matter. These pollutants contribute to air, water, and soil degradation and are linked to severe health conditions in nearby populations, including respiratory disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and increased mortality rates. Noise pollution is also a significant issue, inducing auditory diseases that affect most workers in cement plants, and disturbing the population living in the neighborhoods and fauna behavior. This review explores the pollution paths and the multifaceted impacts of cement production on the environment. It also highlights the social challenges faced by communities, underscoring the urgent need for stricter environmental policies and the adoption of greener technologies to mitigate the adverse effects of cement production on both the environment and human health. The present study aimed to estimate the contribution of the mining and mineral processing steps of lithium concentrate production in Brazil to the Global Warming Potential (GWP100) using an LCA perspective. No previous national study was identified that quantified national GHG emissions in mining and beneficiation operations for lithium ores. This study is considered original and aims to contribute to filling this gap. The functional unit was 1 ton of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) in the mineral concentrate. The contribution to GWP100 was estimated at 1220 kg of CO2eq per ton of LCE, of which 262 kg originated from foreground processes. In the background processes, the largest contribution was 456 kg of CO2eq from emissions in the production of ammonium nitrate, used in the manufacture of mining explosives. An analysis of substituting electricity sources in the product system showed a reduction of 22.7% and 14.7% in the estimated global warming impact when using wind or solar power, respectively. Analysis of the Synergies of Air Pollutant and Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction in Typical Chemical Enterprises

In this study, we selected the production processes and main products of three typical chemical enterprises in Shanghai, namely SH Petrochemical (part of the oil-refining sector), SK Ethylene, and HS Chlor-Alkali, to quantitatively assess the synergistic effects across technology, policy, and emission mechanisms. The localized air pollutant levels and greenhouse gas emissions of the three enterprises were calculated. The synergistic effects between the end-of-pipe emission reductions for air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions were analyzed using the pollutant reduction synergistic and cross-elasticity coefficients, including technology comparisons (e.g., acrylonitrile gas incineration (AOGI) technology vs. traditional flare). Based on these data, we used the SimaPro software and the CML-IA model to conduct a life cycle environmental impact assessment regarding the production and upstream processes of their unit products. By combining the life cycle method and the scenario simulation method, we predicted the trends in the environmental impacts of the three chemical enterprises after the implementation of low-carbon development policies in the chemical industry in 2030. We also quantified the synergistic effects of localized air pollutant and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions within the low-carbon development scenario by using cross-elasticity coefficients based on life cycle environmental impacts. The research results show that, for every ton of air pollutant reduced through end-of-pipe treatment measures, the HS Chlor-Alkali enterprise would increase its maximum CO2 emissions, amounting to about 80 tons. For SK Ethylene, the synergistic coefficient for VOC reduction and CO2 emissions when using AOGI thermal incineration technology is superior to that for traditional flare thermal incineration. The activities of the three enterprises had an impact on several environmental indicators, particularly the fossil fuel resource depletion potential, accounting for 69.48%, 53.94%, and 34.23% of their total environmental impact loads, respectively. The scenario simulations indicate that, in a low-carbon development scenario, the overall environmental impact loads of SH Petrochemical (refining sector), SK Ethylene, and HS Chlor-Alkali would decrease by 3~5%. This result suggests that optimizing the upstream power structure, using “green hydrogen” instead of “grey hydrogen” in hydrogenation units within refining enterprises, and reducing the consumption of electricity and steam in the production processes of ethylene and chlor-alkali are effective measures in reducing carbon emissions in the chemical industry. The quantification of the synergies based on life cycle environmental impacts revealed that there are relatively strong synergies for air pollutant and GHG emission reductions in the oil-refining industry, while the chlor-alkali industry has the weakest synergies.
