Coding metasurfaces consist of multiple elements with distinct phase (or amplitude) responses. By manipulating the spatial arrangement of these elements, electromagnetic (EM) waves can be flexibly manipulated to achieve various functionalities. To efficiently and accurately calculate the far-field scattering characteristics of coding metasurfaces, some studies have proposed a far-field calculation method based on the equivalent source principle. This method reconstructs the far-field scattering pattern of the metasurface using the total radiation fields generated by the equivalent sources of its elements in space. On this basis, this paper proposes an improved equivalent source method featuring a novel extraction model. Compared with existing methods, it effectively enhances computational accuracy while maintaining high computational efficiency. Comparative analyses against traditional far-field synthesis methods, existing equivalent source methods and full-wave simulation methods, together with experimental measurements, fully verify its excellent performance in both computational efficiency and accuracy. NMOSFET, whose gate is on the top of the n-p-n junction with gate oxide in between, is called the n-channel transistor. This bipolar junction underneath the gate oxide may provide an n-n-n-conductive channel as the gate is applied with a positive bias over the threshold voltage (Vth). Conceptually, the definition of an n-type or p-type semiconductor depends on whether the corresponding Fermi energy is higher or lower than the intrinsic Fermi energy, respectively. The positive bias applied to the gate would bend down the intrinsic Fermi energy until it is lower than the original p-type Fermi energy, which means that the p-type becomes strongly inverted to become an n-type. First, the thickness of the inversion layer is derived and presented in a planar 40 nm MOSFET, a 3D 240 nm FinFET, and a power discrete IGBT, with the help of the p (1/m3) of the p-type semiconductor. Different ways of finding p (1/m3) are, thus, proposed to resolve the strong inversion layers. Secondly, the conventional formulas, including the triode region and saturation region, are already modified, especially in the triode region from a continuity point of view. The modified formulas then become necessary and available for fitting the measured characteristic curves at different applied gate voltages. Nevertheless, they work well but not well enough. Thirdly, the electromagnetic wave (EM wave) generated from accelerating carriers (radiation by accelerated charges, such as synchrotron radiation) is proposed to demonstrate phonon scattering, which is responsible for the Source–Drain current reduction at the adjoining of the triode region and saturation region. This consideration of reduction makes the fitting more perfect. Fourthly, the strongly inverted layer may be formed but not conductive. The existing trapping would stop carriers from moving (nearly no mobility, μ) unless the applied gate bias is over the threshold voltage. The quantum confinement addressing the quantum well, which traps the carriers, is to be estimated. Full article

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) method can image dielectric discontinuities in subsurface structures, which cause the reflection of electromagnetic (EM) waves. These discontinuities are imaged as reflectors in GPR sections, often distorted by diffracted energy. To focus the diffracted energy within the GPR sections, migration is commonly used. The migration velocity of GPR data is a low-wavenumber attribute crucial for effective migration. Obtaining a migration velocity model, typically close to a Root Mean Square (RMS) model, from zero-offset (ZO) data requires analysis of the available diffractions, whose density and (x, t) coverage are random. Thus, the accuracy and efficiency of such a velocity model, whether for migration or interval velocity model estimation, are not guaranteed. An alternative is the multipath summation method, which involves the weighted stacking of constant velocity migrated sections. Each stacked section contributes to the final stack, weighted by a scalar value dependent on the constant velocity value used and its relation to its estimated mean velocity of the section. This method effectively focuses the GPR diffractions in the presence of low heterogeneity. However, when the EM velocity varies dramatically, 2D weights are needed. In this study, with the aid of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithm that detects diffractions and uses their kinematic information, we generate a diffraction velocity model. This model is then used to assign 2D weights for the weighted multipath summation, aiming to focus the scattered energy within the GPR section. We describe this methodology and demonstrate its application in enhancing the lateral continuity of reflections. We compare it with the 1D multipath summation using simulated data and present its application on marble assessment GPR data for imaging cracks and discontinuities in the subsurface structure. Vortex electromagnetic (EM) waves exhibit spiral wavefront phase distributions, owing to their orbital angular momentum (OAM). Thus, the scattered waves from targets contain OAM characteristics, demonstrating novel scattering properties. Although researchers have carried out both theoretical and experimental studies on the target scattering characteristics of vortex EM waves, a comprehensive and standardized characterization framework is still lacking. This paper proposes and defines an EM vortex scattering matrix (EVSM), which can be used as a characterization method for the target scattering characteristics in the OAM dimension of vortex EM waves. Since vortex EM waves carry both OAM and spin angular momentum (SAM), the EM vortex-polarization joint scattering matrix (EVPJSM) is defined by extending EVSM. This joint matrix simultaneously describes the target scattering characteristics in both OAM and SAM dimensions of vortex EM waves. And it can offer a thorough framework of target scattering characteristics for arbitrary OAM–SAM combinations in new-dimensional EM waves. Numerical simulations are performed to compute each element in EVPJSM for two typical targets under twelve different pairs of OAM modes and two SAM polarization combinations. The numerical results can be used as an example of the characterization method in new dimensions for the targets’ scattering characteristics. Full article

The measurement and analysis of the interaction between Bessel vortex electromagnetic (EM) and several standard targets are presented in this paper. With the aid of the angular spectrum expansion (ASE) method and physics optics (PO) theorem, scattering results on the plates (metal and dielectric) and a sphere could be derived. Furthermore, plane near-field scanning and near-far field conversion methods were implemented to compare the theoretical radar cross section (RCS). In the experiment, the quasi Bessel vortex wave was generated by a holographic metasurface antenna, and the whole measurement was performed in an anechoic chamber. The results of both the theory and measurement show that the scattered fields of the plate and sphere still had characteristics of the vortex EM wave, and the scientificity and accuracy of the measured RCS were verified. Our work involved a vortex scattering experiment in the microwave frequency band, which provides strong support for the application of vortex waves in radar detection and target recognition. This article is devoted to solving full-wave electromagnetic inverse scattering problems (EM-ISPs), which determine the geometrical and physical properties of scatterers from the knowledge of scattered fields. Due to the intrinsic ill-posedness and nonlinearity of EM-ISPs, traditional non-iterative and iterative methods struggle to meet the requirements of high accuracy and real-time reconstruction. To overcome these issues, we propose a two-step contrast source learning approach, cascading convolutional neural networks (CNNs) into the inversion framework, to tackle 2D full-wave EM-ISPs. In the first step, a contrast source network based on the CNNs architecture takes the determined part of the contrast source as input and then outputs an estimate of the total contrast source. Then, the recovered total contrast source is directly converted into the initial contrast. In the second step, the rough initial contrast obtained beforehand is input into the U-Net for refinement. Consequently, the EM-ISPs can be quickly solved with much higher accuracy, even for high-contrast objects, almost achieving real-time imaging. Numerical examples have demonstrated that the proposed two-step contrast source learning approach is able to improve accuracy and robustness even for high-contrast scatterers. The proposed approach offers a promising avenue for advancing EM-ISPs by integrating strengths from both traditional and deep learning-based approaches, to achieve real-time quantitative microwave imaging for high-contrast objects. A characterization of near-field impulse responses based on electromagnetic (EM) near-field data from an EM solver to explore features of the propagation process on a well-known wideband traveling wave antenna—double-slot Vivaldi antenna—is presented in this article. The intensity, propagating time and partitional response characteristics facilitate interpretation of the propagation process and impacts of the antenna partitions on the process. The EM energy flows guided, reoriented and scattered along a sequence of antennas transmitting and radiating segments were recognized. The geometric features of near-field wavefront surfaces supported evaluation of the EM flow proportions and antenna directivity. Impact of the structural section on radiation was also assessed by the partitional far-field response characteristic in frequency and time domains. Supported by many complementary characteristics in the analyses, inherent features of the propagation process were emphasized and false flags were minimized. By this approach, the simplification for the near-field propagation model contributed to enhancing the insight of near-field propagation processes on the double-slot antipodal Vivaldi antennas and enabled optimizing the antenna structure details. In this paper, a one-dimensional (1-D) range profile of the hypersonic target enveloped by a plasma sheath is investigated. Firstly, the non-uniform property of the plasma sheath is studied and its impact on the wideband electromagnetic (EM) wave is analyzed. A wideband radar echo model for the plasma-sheath-enveloped hypersonic target is constructed. Then, by exploiting the relationship among the incident depth, reflection intensity, and plasma velocity, it reveals that distinct scatter points in various areas of the target will suffer from varying reflection intensity and coupled velocity, leading to severe defocusing in the range profile. To tackle this issue, a novel focusing algorithm combing the Fractional Fourier Transform (FRFT) with the CLEAN technique is developed, which independently calculates the coupled plasma velocity and compensates for the phase error via a series of iterative procedures. Finally, the influence of the plasma sheath on the 1-D range profile and the effectiveness of the proposed focusing algorithm are validated through simulations. Full article

Managing medication status solves related complications and prevents increases in medical costs due to the improper management of prescriptions. An ingestible sensor can be used to confirm a patient’s real-time medical status by measuring the electromagnetic waves transmitted from an ingested medication from outside of the human body. However, concerns about costs of delivery arise, as it would be necessary to attach a sensor to each ingested medication. In this study, we focused on using an electromagnetic (EM) imaging method which can estimate the internal structure of various objects using a scattered electric field. With this method we can detect medication as it does not require the installation of a sensor. At first we performed an electromagnetic field simulation and based on the results we experimentally measured the external electric field, which changes with the medicine. Then, we evaluated the accuracy of the detection method by calculating the difference between the detection rate with the proposed detection method against a more conventional method. The results indicate the possibility of achieving a more than 20% higher accuracy than the conventional detection method with our proposed method using electromagnetic waves. Full article

Recently, reconfigurable coding metasurfaces have attracted extensive attention due to their dynamic and flexible manipulation of electromagnetic (EM) waves, making them an effective solution to connect physical reality and information science. Nevertheless, most previously reported reconfigurable metasurfaces suffer from limited applications, as they solely possess either phase or amplitude modulation. In this article, we propose a reconfigurable coding metasurface that can regulate both phase and amplitude response independently. In the field of the metasurface, the phase response can tailor the wavefronts, and the amplitude response can adjust the redistribution of the energy of the EM waves. Specifically, by integrating a PIN diode into the meta-atom and controlling its bias voltage, the reflection phase can be switched between two opposite phases with a phase difference of about 180°, and the reflection amplitude can be manipulated from 0.02 to 0.98 continuously at 11 GHz. The unit element consists of simple multi-layer structures, reducing its production cost and processing difficulty. By loading 1-bit phase code and multi-bit amplitude code to each unit element severally, this metasurface can modulate the distribution of reflected EM waves in two-dimensional (2-D) space while simultaneously suppressing the sidelobes for any quantity of scattered beams over a wide operating band ranging from 10.5 to 11.5 GHz. This metasurface exhibits promising potential for manipulating the distribution of EM wave energy and shaping of EM beams, which can be expected to facilitate wireless communication technology. A plasma sheath will be developed surrounding a hypersonic vehicle in flight, which can reflect, absorb, and scatter electromagnetic (EM) waves of lower frequencies than its own, resulting in a communication blackout. This paper focuses on knowing how to limit the absorption and reflection of low-frequency EM waves by plasma sheath in a thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium state. According to the temperature increment model, the energy of high-power microwave (HPM) irradiation is translated into the temperature increment of heavy particles in plasma. As a result of this modification process, the transmittance of low-frequency EM waves going through the plasma sheath in a certain time frame rises, potentially easing the communication blackout problem. With the rapid advancement of modern technology and radar detection systems, electromagnetic (EM) stealth technology has become increasingly significant, particularly in aircraft stealth and military radar applications. In this work, an all-metal metasurface is designed for broadband terahertz radar cross-section (RCS) reduction and infrared invisibility. The all-metal metasurface possesses extremely low infrared emissivity and high polarization conversion in the terahertz band. Through the joint simulation of MATLAB and CST, a genetic algorithm is used to optimize the random phase distribution of 2, 3, and 4-bit metasurfaces, so that the reflected wave is scattered to achieve broadband terahertz RCS reduction. Simulation results show that the metasurface can simultaneously achieve broadband terahertz RCS reduction in 3–5 THz and infrared invisibility in 24–38 THz (8–12.5 μm). The RCS reduction of the coding metasurface is greater than 10 dB compared to the metal plate, and the maximum RCS reduction of the 4-bit metasurface can reach 21.1 dB. Compared to the traditional design method, the proposed method can reduce time consumption and find the optimal result to achieve high performance. We believe the proposed method can provide significant guidance for surface coating in camouflage applications and opens up new possibilities for improving the information capacity of coding metasurfaces. Electromagnetic (EM) scattering of sea surface may exhibit sea-spikespikes when there exist breaking waves. As sea-spikes are usually mistaken for targets, the investigation of EM scattering characteristics and high-range resolution profiles (HRRPs) of three-dimensional (3D) sea surfaces with a plunging breaker is meaningful for target detection and recognition. To describe the basic features of a plunging breaker, this paper developed a feasible and wind-related plunging breaker model. Here, profiles of a plunging breaker in its life cycle are modeled according to the wind speed and time factor, and the small-scale roughness is considered. Then, the sea surface and plunging breaker are combined to obtain the composite model. Additionally, a hybrid algorithm based on the Capillary Wave Modification Facet Scattering Model (CWMFSM) and ray tracing technique is developed to calculate the EM scattering of 3D sea surface with a plunging breaker. Simulation results show that the sea-spike phenomenon is more likely to occur for the upwind and large incident angles. The amplitude of the backscattering electric field from the plunging breaker is much stronger than that of the sea surface. Furthermore, the HRRPs of 3D sea surface with a plunging breaker and target are computed. Sharp peaks from the plunging breaker that exhibit obvious target-like features are observed. Full article

The integral equations technique has been successfully modified for studying the plane E-polarized electromagnetic wave scattering by multilevel coplanar systems of zero-thickness impedance strips. Reformulation of the scattering problem in the form of the second-kind regular integral equations has been realized on the base of the Carleman regularization technique. Two novel and original classes of specific Cantor functions have been presented and analyzed. Using new Cantor functions, it is easy to create a lot of non-classical orderings for specific multilevel coplanar strips systems. That sort of system can be useful for modeling irregular natural processes and zones in the future. Considerable attention was focused on the plane E-polarized electromagnetic wave scattering by sparsely filled coplanar systems of electrically narrow impedance strips. An explicit solution of the scattering problem has been obtained for such case of strips system. Full article

The electromagnetic (EM) scattering mechanism of dynamic oil spill–covered sea surface area is studied in this manuscript. Utilizing the theory of oil film diffusion combined with oil spill volume, a three–dimensional (3D) geometric model of dynamic oil spill–covered sea surface area is established. The changes of the geometric structure and statistical characteristics of the sea surface area under the influence of the oil film are also analyzed. The thinner the oil spill thickness, the more sensitive it is to the sea surface slope and wave height. The facet-based hybrid model and the multilayer dielectric scattering method are combined to measure the EM scattering on the sea surface when covered by dynamic oil spills. In addition, the hydrodynamic and tilt effect are discussed. The EM scattering mechanism of the dynamic oil spill–covered sea surface area is revealed, and the tilt modulation is greater than the hydrodynamic effect in the dynamic process of an oil spill. It provides an important reference for the remote sensing monitoring of oil. Full article
