Parental perceptions of healthy eating often diverge from children’s actual diets, but this gap is poorly documented in Central Asia. We examined how parents’ priorities for key food groups relate to nutrient intakes in 390 urban children aged 1–6 years in Central Kazakhstan. In a cross-sectional study, parents completed a 24 h multiple-pass dietary recall and rated the importance of fats and sweets, meat and fish, dairy, vegetables and fruits, and bread and potatoes on 5-point scales. Nutrient intakes were calculated using software, compared with national DRIs, and analyzed using rank-based tests and Spearman correlations. Parents reported near-ceiling priority for restricting fats and sweets and consistently high priority for bread and potatoes, whereas vegetables, fruits, meat/fish ,and dairy were rated moderately important, with dairy under-prioritized in 1–2-year-olds. On the recalled day, median intakes of fat, dietary fiber, vitamin C, and calcium were below national recommendations at all ages, and median intakes of iron, thiamine, and niacin were particularly low at 3–4 years, while sodium intake exceeded recommended levels; the 3–4-year group showed the most pronounced clustering of shortfalls. Prevalence estimates indicated that most children had intakes below recommendations for dietary fiber and calcium and above recommendations for sodium, underscoring population-wide nutritional imbalance. Across all scales, parental priorities showed only weak, non-significant associations with nutrient intakes (|r| < 0.11). These findings indicate a perception–intake gap and support interventions that ensure adequate fats, fiber, vitamin C, calcium, and bioavailable iron in preschool diets. Full article

The effects of pelleting a total mixed ration (TMR) for dairy sheep were investigated in an experiment involving 24 lactating Assaf ewes, which were assigned to two groups and fed the same TMR ad libitum, offered either in pelleted (PTMR group, n = 12) or in unpelleted form (CTMR group, n = 12). The experiment lasted 28 days, during which feed intake, eating behavior (including meal frequency and size, meal duration, eating rate, between-meal interval), and milk yield were recorded daily. Body weight (BW) was recorded on days 1 and 28 and milk samples were collected on days 1, 8, 15, 22 and 28 for milk composition analysis. Blood acid-base status was determined at the beginning and at the end of the trial. Ewes fed the CTMR diet exhibited (p < 0.05) a higher meal frequency and longer meal duration, along with a smaller meal size and slower eating rate. However, feed intake in this group was less than that in ewes fed PTMR only during the final two weeks of the experimental period. Total eating time was also longer (p < 0.001) in the CTMR group, whereas the average time between meals was shorter (p < 0.002). No differences (p > 0.05) were observed between dietary treatments in blood acid-base status, milk yield or milk composition. However, a diet x day interaction (p < 0.05) was detected for milk yield, as during the last 2 weeks of the experimental period the ewes fed the PTMR yielded more milk than those fed the CTMR. Feed conversion ratio did not differ between groups (p > 0.05), but body weight loss was greater in ewes fed the CTMR diet (−3.00 vs. −0.58 kg; p < 0.05). A trend toward improved feed efficiency was observed in the PTMR group when calculated based on milk yield corrected for that theoretically derived from the mobilization of body reserves (1.98 vs. 1.41 g DMI/kg milk; p = 0.077), with estimated contributions from body reserves of 485 g/day in the CTMR group and 70 g/day in the PTMR group. In conclusion, the use of pelleted total mixed rations in high-yielding dairy ewes enhances feed intake, feed efficiency, milk yield, and energy balance without adversely affecting milk composition or animal health in the short term. Neuronal synapses are the functional units of communication in the central nervous system. This review describes the molecular mechanisms regulating synaptic transmission, plasticity, and circuit refinement. At the presynaptic active zone, scaffolding proteins including bassoon, piccolo, RIMs, and munc13 organize vesicle priming and the localization of voltage-gated calcium channels. Neurotransmitter release is mediated by the SNARE complex, comprising syntaxin-1, SNAP25, and synaptobrevin, and triggered by the calcium sensor synaptotagmin-1. Following exocytosis, synaptic vesicles are recovered through clathrin-mediated, ultrafast, bulk, or kiss-and-run endocytic pathways. Postsynaptically, the postsynaptic density (PSD) serves as a protein hub where scaffolds such as PSD-95, shank, homer, and gephyrin anchor excitatory (AMPA, NMDA) and inhibitory (GABA-A, Glycine) receptors are observed. Synaptic strength is modified during long-term potentiation (LTP) and depression (LTD) through signaling cascades involving kinases like CaMKII, PKA, and PKC, or phosphatases such as PP1 and calcineurin. These pathways regulate receptor trafficking, Arc-mediated endocytosis, and actin-dependent remodeling of dendritic spines. Additionally, synapse formation and elimination are guided by cell adhesion molecules, including neurexins and neuroligins, and by microglial pruning via the complement cascade (C1q, C3) and “don’t eat me” signals like CD47. Molecular diversity is further expanded by alternative splicing and post-translational modifications. A unified model of synaptic homeostasis is required to understand the basis of neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders. Full article

Background: Depression and eating disorders (EDs) represent significant and often multiple public health concerns. Healthcare workers, including medical residents, were affected by several stressors that the COVID-19 pandemic has engendered and amplified, potentially exacerbating mental health issues. Despite this, limited evidence is available regarding the association between depressive symptoms and possible EDs among Public Health Residents (PHRs). Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional study, the ‘Public Health Residents Anonymous Survey in Italy (PHRASI),’ was conducted between June and July 2022. A total of 379 PHRs participated in this study, filling in a self-administered questionnaire which included the PHQ-9 for assessing depressive symptoms and the SCOFF (Sick, Control, One, Fat, Food) test as a screening tool for possible EDs. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated associations between sociodemographic and training/work-related factors, depressive symptoms, and EDs. Results: Overall, 40.6% of respondents screened positive for possible EDs. Depressive symptoms had a positive association with possible EDs (aOR = 2.76; 95% CI = 1.55–4.93). Other factors associated with higher ED odds included region of residence (aOR = 1.92; 95% CI = 1.06–3.47), intention to repeat the test for another postgraduate course (aOR = 3.22; 95% CI = 1.25–8.3), and working more than 40 h per week (aOR = 1.91; 95% CI = 1.19–3.07). Conversely, having more than one child (aOR = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.13–0.78) was associated with lower odds. Conclusions: The findings highlight a significant association between depressive symptoms and positive screening for possible EDs, underscoring the need for integrated mental health support and preventive interventions within medical residency programmes, especially in the context of public health crises. Background/Objectives: To analyze the parent-perceived quality of life (QoL) in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to study the relationship between sociodemographic and clinical factors and this perception, under the perspective of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 95 participants (ages 5–19 years) with CP. Participants’ parents were asked about sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and compiled Cerebral Palsy Quality of Life (CP-QoL) and Pediatric Disability Inventory-Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT). Participants were assessed and classified into the following functional domains: gross motor function (GMFM-88, GMFCS), manual ability (MACS), eating and drinking abilities (EDACS), and communication function (CFCS). Correlations between CP-QoL domains and variables were investigated using Spearman’s correlation coefficient and multivariate predictive models were used to investigate the variables predicting CP-QoL scores for each domain. Results: A total of 95 children with a mean age of 12.4 ± 3.5 years (range 5–19 years) were included. Participants demonstrated moderate-high GMFM-88 level (228.8 ± 44.7) and high functional performance across PEDI-CAT domains: Activity (57.2 ± 5.1), Mobility (63.1 ± 5.6), and Social/Cognitive (70.2 ± 4.3). Parent-perceived QoL was significantly higher when children did not require AFOs, botulinum toxin, or recent hospitalizations, and lower among children who attended physical therapy >2 h/week. Moderate correlations were consistently found between the ‘Feelings about Functioning’ domain and functional variables, being positive for GMFM-88 and all PEDI-CAT domains, and negative for GMFCS, MACS, EDACS and CFCS. That domain of CP-QoL was best explained by the regression model (R2 = 0.619, p < 0.001), with the combination of three variables: GMFM-88, PEDI-CAT Activity and PEDI-CAT Social/Cognitive. Among them, PEDI-CAT Activity was the strongest predictor (β = 0.1436). Conclusions: In children with CP, to enhance family well-being, interventions should prioritize social participation and carefully balance the intensity and frequency of therapy against family burden and daily life demands, as QoL is primarily driven by manual ability and functional performance. Background: Anorexia nervosa (AN) may require nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding when oral intake is insufficient. Evidence on the psychological impact and prognostic correlates of NGT use in adolescents affected with AN is limited. Methods: Fifty-seven adolescent inpatients (96.5% female; age range 12–18 years; and mean age 15.0 ± 1.51 years) affected with AN admitted in a child psychiatry ward and treated with NGT re-feeding in addition to oral nutrition were included in the study. A 21-item VAS questionnaire was administered at intake (T0), after NGT introduction (T1), after one week of NGT use (T2), and after NGT dismissal (T3) to assess the physical and psychological effects. Participants were also assessed with psychometric measures including personality (TCI), eating psychopathology (EDI-2), general psychopathology (BDI-II, SCL-90-R, and TAS), and family functioning (FAD). The measures were compared between each timepoint with paired t-tests and ANOVA for repeated measures. Pearson correlations were performed between the VAS scores and psychometric measures. Results: From admission to discharge, weight increased by +3.2 kg and BMI by +1.2 kg/m2. Items 1, 3, 4, 6, 15, 18, and 20 of the VAS questionnaire items showed significant improvement over time. TCI personality traits, EDI-2 eating and BDI, SCL-90 and TAS general psychopathology, and FAD family functioning were related to NGT perception by the AN adolescents. Conclusions: NGT was helpful in weight progression during inpatient treatment. It was generally well tolerated, with progressive improvement in psychological and physical discomfort during treatment. The meaningful associations with specific psychometric features suggest the possibility to tailor the NGT use based on adolescent characteristics. Multidisciplinary care and tailored psychoeducation may enhance NGT acceptance. Full article

Background/Objectives: The overconsumption of animal-derived proteins represents a threat to both the environment and our health. Although there is widespread agreement that reducing meat consumption represents a more sustainable alternative, few studies have explored the implicit relations guiding these food choices. This empirical study explores meat consumption and vegetarianism through the lens of Relational Frame Theory. It is hypothesized that people who eat meat have different relational responses to images of meat and plant-based alternatives than vegetarians. Methods: We used the Implicit Attribute Classification Task (IMPACT) to measure relational responses, testing whether omnivores find plant-based proteins (1) less tasty, (2) less familiar, and (3) more expensive than vegetarians do. We registered the response latencies and calculated D-scores from 110 participants who completed an online test. Results: The study failed to find any statistically significant differences in the IMPACT measures between omnivores and vegetarians, given our specific participants and stimuli. Conclusions: Relational responding measures offer a useful approach to understanding consumer choices. However, they are highly sensitive to the task parameters and could be enhanced by further integration with other consumer behavior models when explaining meat consumption. Full article

Background: The aim of the S.A.P.O.R.E. (Sustainable And Pocket friendly Options for nutritious and Responsible Eating) initiative was to offer students attending the University of Brescia a teaching kitchen programme to develop cooking and food skills (CS and FS) and promote healthy food choices. Methods: The course was structured in four weekly lessons, and both before and after, participants were asked to anonymously complete validated questionnaires to assess CS and FS, adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) and dietary fibre intake. Levels of competence and satisfaction were assessed at the end of the course. Results: Twenty-eight students completed the course. Mean CS and FS scores significantly increased, from 56.1 ± 19.8 to 68.0 ± 16.5 (score range 0–98, p < 0.001) and from 92.7 ± 22.4 to 104.3 ± 21.0 (score range 0–133; p = 0.012), respectively. The MediLite score significantly increased from 9.43 ± 2.77 to 10.9 ± 2.06 (p = 0.006). The mean daily dietary fibre intake increased slightly from 17.8 ± 8.4 to 19.2 ± 7.1 g. More than 70% of participants correctly answered the questionnaire about acquired competence. The average cost for a single meal was EUR 1.50 ± 0.60, and the mean level of students’ satisfaction was 4.4 out of 5. Conclusions: This initiative was significantly associated with improvement in CS, FS and adherence to MD, but not in fibre intake. Full article

Background: The decline in traditional cooking practices and the increased consumption of ready-to-eat meals have raised concerns about dietary quality and health, especially among university students. Nutrition students, despite their academic training, often struggle to translate theoretical knowledge into healthy eating practices. Culinary classes in academic settings have emerged as promising strategies to enhance both cooking skills (CS) and eating competence (EC). Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a 12-month cooking class program on the development of culinary skills and eating competence among nutrition students at a public university in Brazil. Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted with 42 nutrition students who completed a structured questionnaire at three time points: baseline, after 6 months, and after 1 year of participation in sequential cooking-related subjects. Data were collected using the Brazilian Cooking Skills and Healthy Eating Questionnaire (QBHC) and the Brazilian version of the Satter Eating Competence Inventory (ecSI2.0™BR). Statistical analyses included a repeated-measures ANOVA and a Pearson correlation. Bonferroni post hoc comparisons were conducted following the repeated-measures ANOVA to identify the time points at which significant differences occurred. Results: Participants, predominantly young females (78.6%, mean age 21.07 ± 2.71 years), demonstrated high CS at baseline and showed significant improvements over time (p < 0.05). At baseline, 59.5% of participants (n = 25) were considered competent eaters (EC ≥ 32). Knowledge in cooking terms and techniques increased after one year (p = 0.023). EC mean scores classified participants as competent eaters at the beginning and after one year, with an increase in the internal regulation domain. Improvements in technical culinary knowledge were associated with gains in contextual skills. Conclusions: Participation in structured cooking classes positively influenced the development of CS and EC internal regulation among nutrition students. Full article

Background/Objectives: Poor dietary habits are a major contributor to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the leading cause of mortality worldwide. To promote healthier eating, governments and stakeholders have implemented various nutrition policies, including front-of-pack nutrition labeling (FOPNL). The Choices International Foundation (Choices), through its criteria, supports these efforts through its standardized nutrient profiling system (NPS). Originally developed to underpin a positive FOPNL logo, in 2021, the criteria were expanded into a globally oriented five-level profiling system covering 23 basic and 10 discretionary food groups, addressing key nutrients such as trans-fatty acids, saturated fat, sodium, sugar, fiber, and energy. To ensure continued scientific relevance, the Choices criteria are periodically reviewed by an independent International Scientific Committee (ISC). Methods: This paper presents the 2025 revision of the Choices criteria, focusing on priority areas identified through stakeholder consultation and recent scientific developments. Results: Key updates include the introduction of nutrient-based equivalence criteria for plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy, based on protein and selected micronutrient thresholds. Non-sugar sweeteners (NSSs) were newly included as a factor that lowers a product’s health classification and makes it ineligible for a positive FOPNL. Additionally, the industrially produced trans-fatty acid (iTFA) criteria were revised and aligned with the latest World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, improving both technical feasibility and policy coherence. While options for incorporating whole-grain and micronutrient criteria were explored, these were not included in the current revision. Conclusions: The 2025 update system enhances the scientific rigor, policy alignment, and global applicability of the Choices system. Background/Objectives: Childhood overweight and obesity are influenced by family-level behaviors related to nutrition, physical activity, and daily routines. This study aimed to In contrast to screen time family nutrition and physical activity practices for overweight and obesity among children aged 6–17 years in Türkiye. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 214 children recruited from a community setting. Sociodemographic data and anthropometric measurements were collected, and family practices were assessed using the Family Nutrition and Physical Activity Scale–Turkish version (FNPA-TR). Binary logistic regression analyses were performed separately for overweight and obesity outcomes. Results: Healthier beverage choices were the only significant predictor of overweight, reducing the odds by 62%. Obesity was predicted by three FNPA domains: family meal frequency, family eating habits, and screen time. Frequent family meals and healthier eating habits were associated with lower obesity risk, whereas higher screen exposure increased the likelihood of obesity. Conclusions: Beverage choices, family meal patterns, eating habits, and screen exposure emerged as key behavioral predictors of unhealthy weight status in children. These findings highlight key family-centered prevention targets for pediatric nursing and public health, including promoting healthy beverage consumption, strengthening structured family eating routines, and reducing screen exposure in children. Background/Objectives: Emotional eating refers to the tendency to eat in response to emotions rather than physiological hunger and has been associated with changes in food choices and difficulties in dietary self-regulation. Whether emotional eating influences adherence to the Mediterranean diet remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between emotional eating and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 245 adults completed the Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ) and the MEDI-LITE questionnaire to assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Participants were classified into three emotional eating categories (NO EE, LEE, EE) and stratified by BMI (normal weight vs. overweight). Results: Higher EEQ scores were associated with greater disinhibition, stronger food preferences, and a higher sense of guilt in both BMI categories. However, adherence to the Mediterranean diet did not differ significantly across emotional eating groups, and overall MEDI-LITE scores were low in the entire sample. Correlations between emotional eating subscales and specific food groups were weak and did not show a consistent pattern. Conclusions: Emotional eating was associated with psychological and behavioral aspects of eating but was not related to adherence to the Mediterranean diet in this population. The uniformly low adherence to the Mediterranean diet may have attenuated potential associations. Further studies using more detailed dietary assessment tools and longitudinal designs are needed to clarify how emotional eating influences food choices over time. Full article

This comprehensive review synthesizes current advances and persistent challenges in integrating worker safety and food safety through human-robot collaboration (HRC) in poultry processing. Rapid industry expansion and rising consumer demand for ready-to-eat poultry products have heightened occupational risks and foodborne contamination concerns, necessitating holistic safety strategies. The review examines ergonomic, microbiological, and regulatory risks specific to poultry lines, and maps how state-of-the-art collaborative robots (“cobots”)—including power and force-limiting arms, adaptive soft grippers, machine vision, and biosensor integration—can support safer, more hygienic, and more productive operations. The authors analyze technical scientific literature (2018–2025) and real-world case studies, highlighting how automation (e.g., vision-guided deboning and intelligent sanitation) can reduce repetitive strain injuries, lower contamination rates, and improve production consistency. The review also addresses the psychological and sociocultural dimensions that affect workforce acceptance, as well as economic and regulatory barriers to adoption, particularly in small- and mid-sized plants. Key research gaps include gripper adaptability, validation of food safety outcomes in mixed human-cobot workflows, and the need for deeper workforce retraining and feedback mechanisms. The authors propose a multidisciplinary roadmap: harmonizing ergonomic, safety, and hygiene standards; developing adaptive food-grade robotic end-effectors; fostering explainable AI for process transparency; and advancing workforce education programs. Ultimately, successful HRC deployment in poultry processing will depend on continuous collaboration among industry, researchers, and regulatory authorities to ensure both safety and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global food system. Listeria monocytogenes (LM) contamination constitutes a paramount global threat to food safety, necessitating the urgent development of advanced, rapid, and non-destructive detection methodologies to ensure food security. This study successfully synthesized Bi2WO6 nanoflowers through optimized feed ratios of raw materials and further functionalized them with noble metal Au to construct a high-performance Au-Bi2WO6 composite nanomaterial. The composite exhibited high sensing performance toward acetoin, including high sensitivity (Ra/Rg = 36.9@50 ppm), rapid response–recovery kinetics (13/12 s), and excellent selectivity. Through UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations, efficient electron exchange between Au and Bi2WO6 was confirmed. This electron exchange increased the initial resistance of the material, effectively enhancing the response value toward the target gas. Furthermore, the chemical sensitization effect of Au significantly increased the surface-active oxygen content, promoted gas–solid interfacial reactions, and improved the adsorption capacity for target gases. Compared to conventional turbidimetry, the Au-Bi2WO6 nanoflower-based gas sensor demonstrates superior practical potential, offering a novel technological approach for non-destructive and rapid detection of foodborne pathogens. Background: Female individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are more likely to develop restrictive eating disorders (REDs), with both conditions appearing to share common pathophysiological pathways. We conducted a case–control study exploring eating symptomatology and interoceptive profiles in female adolescents with IBDs compared with adolescents diagnosed with REDs, in order to test the hypothesis that the two clinical populations exhibit similar interoceptive characteristics. Methods: We recruited 33 female adolescents with IBDs and 54 controls with REDs matched for age and gender. All participants completed a validated psychometric battery assessing eating disorder features (EDI-3) and interoceptive awareness (MAIA-2). Results: Twenty-seven percent of patients with IBD scored above the cut-off (>70th percentile) on the EDI-3 Eating Disorder Risk Composite (EDRC), showing an eating and interoceptive profile comparable to that of patients with REDs. The two sub-cohorts within the IBD sample differed in the ‘Not-Worrying’ and ‘Trusting’ MAIA-2 subscales, with the IBD cohort at risk of developing an ED reporting lower scores. Conclusions: Our findings indicate comparable interoceptive profiles between adolescents with IBDs who are at risk of developing EDs and patients with a confirmed diagnosis of REDs. This similarity underscores the need to further investigate the shared pathogenic mechanisms underlying these conditions, particularly the role of the gut–brain axis (GBA). Full article
