Thermal cameras are becoming popular in several applications of precision agriculture, including crop and soil monitoring, for efficient irrigation scheduling, crop maturity, and yield mapping. Nowadays, these sensors can be integrated as payloads on unmanned aerial vehicles, providing high spatial and temporal resolution, to deeply understand the variability of crop and soil conditions. However, few commercial software programs, such as PIX4D Mapper, can process thermal images, and their functionalities are very limited. This paper reports on the implementation of a custom MATLAB® R2024a script to extract agronomic information from thermal orthomosaics obtained from images acquired by the DJI Mavic 3T drone. This approach enables us to evaluate the temperature at each point of an orthomosaic, create regions of interest, calculate basic statistics of spatial temperature distribution, and compute the Crop Water Stress Index. In the authors’ opinion, the reported approach can be easily replicated and can serve as a valuable tool for scientists who work with thermal images in the agricultural sector. Full article

Background: Small airway dysfunction (SAD) plays a critical role in the management of severe asthma, particularly in patients at risk of requiring biological therapies (BTs). Short-term studies have shown that switching to single-inhaler triple therapy (SITT) with extrafine beclomethasone–formoterol–glycopyrronium improves outcomes and helps achieve quiet asthma, a state marked by symptom control, no exacerbations or oral steroids, reduced inflammation, and better small airway function. This study investigated whether, over one year, patients could maintain this state as Steady Quiet Asthma (SQA) and whether baseline measures could predict this sustained response. Methods: Twenty-six patients with severe asthma and SAD were transitioned from open triple-inhaler therapy to a closed, single-inhaler triple therapy containing extrafine beclomethasone–formoterol–glycopyrronium. Assessments at baseline (T0) and at one-year follow-up (T12) included clinical evaluations, spirometry, and impulse oscillometry, with a focus on Fres as a predictor for the need for BT. When prescribed, biologic therapies included mepolizumab, benralizumab, and dupilumab. Results: Of the 26 patients, 9 (34.6%) achieved SQA and did not require biologic therapy at the one-year follow-up, while 17 patients (65.4%) initiated biologic treatment. At T0, patients who required biologics had significantly higher median Fres (21 (19.47; 24.58) vs. 17.61 (15.82; 20.63); p = 0.049) compared to those who remained biologic-free. They also exhibited higher residual volume to total lung capacity ratio (%RV/TLC) values and lower forced expiratory volume in one second/forced vital capacity ratios (FEV1/FVC). At T12, patients spared from BT showed significant reductions in Fres (p = 0.014) and improvements in small airway function (difference in airway resistance between 5 Hz and 20 Hz (R5–20), forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of FVC (%FEF25–75), and better asthma control (ACT). In contrast, patients on BT demonstrated less favorable changes in these parameters. Conclusions: Baseline Fres, FEV1/FVC ratio, and %FEV25–75 are valuable predictors of achieving Steady Quiet Asthma (SQA) and sparing biologic therapy. These findings support the use of SITT in severe asthma and highlight the importance of early functional assessments to guide personalized management. Full article

In highly urbanised and industrialised settings, managing environmental pressures and enhancing urban resilience demand integrated, spatially explicit approaches. This study presents a methodological framework that integrates topographic data, land cover information, and open geodata to produce a high-resolution vulnerability map. A multi-criteria analysis was performed using indicators such as land use, population density, proximity to emission sources, vegetation cover, and sensitive services (e.g., schools and hospitals). The result is a high-resolution vulnerability map that classifies the urban, peri-urban, and coastal zones into five levels of environmental risk. These evaluation levels are derived from geospatial analyses combining pollutant dispersion modelling with land-use classification, enabling the identification of the most vulnerable urban zones. These findings support evidence-based planning and can guide local governments and environmental agencies in prioritising Nature-based Solutions (NBSs), enhancing ecological connectivity, and reducing exposure for vulnerable populations. Background: This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of rehabilitation-focused exercise interventions for lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD), a leading cause of chronic low back pain. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across international and regional databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Magiran, SID, and Noormags) covering the period from January 2010 to January 2025. The review protocol was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under registration number CRD420251088811. Using keywords such as “lumbar DDD,” “exercise therapy,” and “rehabilitation,” a total of 2495 records were identified. After screening, 20 studies—including clinical trials, quasi-experimental, and experimental designs—met the inclusion criteria and were assessed using the McMaster Critical Review Form for Quantitative Studies. Results: Interventions such as hydrotherapy, core stability training, Pilates, and suspension exercises were found to significantly reduce pain and improve functional outcomes. While multimodal approaches (e.g., aquatic exercise combined with acupuncture) showed positive effects, the comparative studies revealed no significant differences between modalities. Suspension training demonstrated superior efficacy in pain reduction compared to isolated core stability exercises. The methodological quality of included studies ranged from good to excellent, with the majority rated as very good or excellent (McMaster scores: 8 “excellent,” 7 “very good,” and 5 “good”). Common limitations among the studies included methodological heterogeneity, small sample sizes (n = 14–30), and insufficient long-term follow-up. Conclusions: Exercise-based rehabilitation is an effective strategy for managing lumbar DDD. Evidence particularly supports the use of suspension training and aquatic therapy for superior improvements in pain and functional outcomes. Future research should aim to adopt standardized protocols, recruit larger sample sizes, and include extended follow-up periods to produce more robust and generalizable findings. Full article

Objective: To analyze the composition of the oral microbiome in periodontal pocket lesions and on the tongue dorsum of patients with Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric disease. Materials and Methods: Patients diagnosed with gastric disease and H. pylori (HP+) were evaluated in comparison to a control group of H. pylori-negative patients without gastric disease (HP−). Periodontal and oral health clinical parameters (PPD, BoP, PSE, plaque score and modified DMFT) were assessed for each patient. Microbiological samples were collected from the deepest periodontal pockets and tongue dorsum, followed by DNA extraction, 16S rRNA PCR amplification, and Next-Generation-Sequencing (NGS) analyses. Results: Sixty-seven patients (27F; 40M, aged 35–85 years) were enrolled. Of these, 52 were HP+ and 15 were HP−. HP+ patients exhibited a significantly higher presence of decayed teeth (p < 0.05) and slightly fewer missing teeth (p > 0.05). The plaque score was significantly higher in HP+ patients (p < 0.05), while PPD and BoP showed no significant differences (p > 0.05). NGS analysis revealed no presence of H. pylori in any samples of both periodontal and tongue sites. HP+ patients showed a distinct microbial composition, including higher prevalence of Capnocytophaga, Fusobacterium, and Peptostreptococcus genera in both locations (pockets and tongue dorsum). Conclusions: The study demonstrated that HP+ patients exhibit distinct oral microbial profiles compared to HP− patients, especially in areas with deeper periodontal pockets. H. pylori was not detected in the oral microbiomes of either group. Full article

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex and multifactorial disorder affecting reproductive, endocrine, and metabolic functions in women of reproductive age. While environmental and lifestyle factors play a role, increasing evidence highlights the contribution of genetic and epigenetic mechanisms to its pathogenesis. Objective: This narrative review aims to provide an updated overview of the current evidence regarding the role of genetic variants, gene expression patterns, and epigenetic modifications in the etiopathogenesis of PCOS, with a focus on their impact on ovarian function, fertility, and systemic alterations. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted across MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library using MeSH terms including “PCOS”, “Genes involved in PCOS”, and “Etiopathogenesis of PCOS” from January 2015 to June 2025. The selection process followed the SANRA quality criteria for narrative reviews. Seventeen studies published in English were included, focusing on original data regarding gene expression, polymorphisms, and epigenetic changes associated with PCOS. Results: The studies analyzed revealed a wide array of molecular alterations in PCOS, including the dysregulation of SIRT and estrogen receptor genes, altered transcriptome profiles in cumulus cells, and the involvement of long non-coding RNAs and circular RNAs in granulosa cell function and endometrial receptivity. Epigenetic mechanisms such as the DNA methylation of TGF-β1 and inflammation-related signaling pathways (e.g., TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3) were also implicated. Some genetic variants—particularly in DENND1A, THADA, and MTNR1B—exhibit signs of positive evolutionary selection, suggesting possible ancestral adaptive roles. Conclusions: PCOS is increasingly recognized as a syndrome with a strong genetic and epigenetic background. The identification of specific molecular signatures holds promise for the development of personalized diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets. Future research should focus on large-scale genomic studies and functional validation to better understand gene–environment interactions and their influence on phenotypic variability in PCOS. Background: The long-term success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often compromised by stress shielding, which can lead to bone resorption and even implant loosening. This study employs finite element analysis (FEA) to compare the stress-shielding effects of a knee prosthesis made from polyether ether ketone (PEEK) with a traditional titanium Ti6Al4V implant on an osteoporotic tibial bone model. Methods: Stress distribution and the stress-shielding factor (SSF) were evaluated at seven critical points in the proximal tibia under physiological loading conditions. Results: Results indicate that the PEEK prosthesis yields a more uniform stress transmission, with von Mises stress levels within the optimal 2–3 MPa range for bone maintenance and consistently negative or near-zero SSF values, implying minimal stress shielding. Conversely, titanium implants exhibited significant stress shielding with high positive SSF values across all points. Additionally, stress concentrations on the polyethylene liner were lower and more evenly distributed in the PEEK model, suggesting reduced wear potential. Conclusions: These findings highlight the biomechanical advantages of PEEK in reducing stress shielding and preserving bone integrity, supporting its potential use to improve implant longevity in TKA. Further experimental and clinical validation are warranted. Full article

Introduction. Larvae of the insect Hermetia illucens can represent an alternative source for low-molecular-weight chitosan (CS) production compared with CS from crustaceans (CScrustac), making it appealing in terms of pharmaceutical applications. Hence, the performances of CSlarvae and CScrustac were compared herein by investigating the in vitro features of nanoparticles (NPs) made from each polysaccharide and administered with the antioxidant quercetin (QUE). Methods. X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy enabled the identification of each type of CS. Following the ionic gelation technique and using sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin as a cross-linking agent, NPs were easily obtained. Results. Physicochemical data, release studies in PBS, and the evaluation of antioxidant effects via the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test were studied for both CSlarvae and CScrustac. QUE-loaded NP sizes ranged from 180 to 547 nm, and zeta potential values were between +7.5 and +39.3 mV. In vitro QUE release in PBS was faster from QUE-CSlarvae NPs than from CScrustac, and high antioxidant activity—according to the DPPH test—was observed for all tested NP formulations. Discussion. The agar diffusion assay, referring to Escherichia coli and Micrococcus flavus, as well as the microdilution assay, showed the best performance as antimicrobial formulations in the case of QUE-CSlarvae NPs. QUE-CSlarvae NPs can represent a promising vehicle for QUE, releasing it in a sustained manner, and, relevantly, the synergism noticed between QUE and CSlarvae resulted in a final antimicrobial product. Conclusions. New perspectives for low-molecular-weight CS are disclosed by adopting renewable sources from insects instead of the commercial CScrustac. Full article

Background: Temporomandibular disorders are a generic term referred to clinical conditions involving the jaw muscles and temporomandibular joint with multifactorial pattern and genetic background. The aim of this observational study was to investigate the correlation between craniomandibular disorders and the presence of occlusal alterations. A clinical evaluation of the occlusal and articular status of the patients was carried out, integrating the latter with the electromyographic recording the activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles. Methods: A clinical observational study on 20 adults assessed temporomandibular disorders using DC/TMD criteria, anamnesis, clinical exams, occlusal and electromyographic analyses. Occlusion was evaluated morphologically and functionally. Electromyography tested static/dynamic muscle activity. Data were statistically analyzed using t-tests and Pearson correlation (p < 0.05). Results: Electromyographic analysis revealed significant differences between subjects with and without visual correction, suggesting that visual input influences masticatory muscle activity. Correlations emerged between occlusal asymmetries and neuromuscular parameters. These findings highlight clinical implications for mandibular function, muscle symmetry, and the potential for therapeutic rebalancing through targeted interventions. Conclusions: The study demonstrates a significant correlation between visual–motor integration and masticatory muscle efficiency. It emphasizes lateralized neuromuscular activation’s influence on occlusal contact distribution. Moreover, it identifies mandibular torsion–endfeel inverse correlation as a potential diagnostic marker for craniomandibular dysfunctions via surface electromyography. Full article

Honey bees are essential pollinators for the ecosystem and food crops. However, their health and survival face threats from both biotic and abiotic stresses. Fungi, microsporidia, and bacteria might significantly contribute to colony losses. Therefore, rapid and sensitive diagnostic tools are crucial for effective disease management. In this study, molecular assays were developed to quickly and efficiently detect the main honey bee pathogens: Nosema ceranae, Aspergillus flavus, Paenibacillus larvae, and Black queen cell virus. In this context, new primer pairs were designed for use in quantitative Real-time PCR (qPCR) reactions. Various protocols for extracting total nucleic acids from bee tissues were tested, indicating a CTAB-based protocol as the most efficient and cost-effective. Furthermore, excluding the head of the bee from the extraction, better results were obtained in terms of quantity and purity of extracted nucleic acids. These assays showed high specificity and sensitivity, detecting up to 250 fg of N. ceranae, 25 fg of P. larvae, and 2.5 pg of A. flavus DNA, and 5 pg of BQCV cDNA, without interference from bee DNA. These qPCR assays allowed pathogen detection within 3 h and at early stages of infection, supporting timely and efficient management interventions. Full article

Effective energy management in Low Earth Orbit satellites is critical, as inefficient energy management can significantly affect mission objectives. The dynamic and harsh space environment further complicates the development of effective energy management strategies. To address these challenges, we propose a Deep Reinforcement Learning approach using Deep-Q Network to develop an adaptive energy management framework for Low Earth Orbit satellites. Compared to traditional techniques, the proposed solution autonomously learns from environmental interaction, offering robustness to uncertainty and online adaptability. It adjusts to changing conditions without manual retraining, making it well-suited for handling modeling uncertainties and non-stationary dynamics typical of space operations. Training is conducted using a realistic satellite electric power system model with accurate component parameters and single-orbit power profiles derived from real space missions. Numerical simulations validate the controller performance across diverse scenarios, including multi-orbit settings, demonstrating superior adaptability and efficiency compared to conventional Maximum Power Point Tracking methods. The pivotal role of angiotensin II (AngII) in cardiovascular disease has been firmly established, as evidenced by a robust body of literature and the broad clinical application of AngII-inhibiting therapies. AngII type 1 receptor is the primary mediator of AngII action, and its activation initiates a multitude of cellular responses that contribute to the development of hypertension, structural changes in the heart and vasculature, and damage to target organs. This review examines AngII from a different perspective, exploring the link between the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system and cardiovascular risk beyond hypertension, with particular emphasis on atherosclerosis development and progression. Exploring the Preventive Effects of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Supplementation on Global Cognition: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Cognitively Unimpaired Older Adults

Dementia prevention is a global public health priority, and lifestyle interventions, including nutrition, have gained interest for their potential to maintain cognitive health. Among nutritional interventions, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 FA), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been widely studied for their potential to support cognitive health. This systematic review evaluated whether n-3 FA supplementation improves global cognition in cognitively unimpaired older adults. Nineteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) met inclusion criteria, of which five reported significant improvements in global cognition. A random-effects meta-analysis of 11 placebo-controlled RCTs showed no significant effect (SMD = −0.02, 95% CI: −0.07 to 0.04). Heterogeneity in supplement type, dosage, duration, and outcome measures may have contributed to inconsistent findings and limited comparability. Furthermore, methodological quality of the trials was generally low. While current evidence does not demonstrate a significant effect of n-3 FA supplementation on global cognition, future research should prioritize well-powered, longer-duration RCTs that incorporate biomarker monitoring and more appropriate doses. Clarifying the role of n-3 FA in cognitive aging remains essential for informing nutrition-based dementia prevention strategies. Full article

This article describes a new software architecture for the non-invasive detection of canine leishmaniasis disease. The proposed platform combines gas-sensing technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and modular cloud-based software components to identify disease-specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in dog breath and hair samples. The system, which has a multi-tier architecture that includes data collection, pre-processing, machine learning-based analysis, diagnosis-request processing, and user interfaces for veterinarians, faculty researchers, and dog owners, has been integrated into a Li-ion Power website plug-in. The primary goal of implementing the proposed platform is to detect parasites at any point they are infectious to a host. This includes detecting parasites at all stages of their life cycle, where they can infect a new host. In addition, this is crucial for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and preventing further transmission. Full article
