In this paper, a compact wideband filtering monopole is presented for remote terrestrial omnidirectional communication systems. The presented antenna features a sleeve monopole structure integrating with two key components: the lumped parallel RLC circuits and an embedded high–low impedance structure within the sleeve section. The integrated high–low impedance structure enables the monopole to achieve excellent filtering characteristics while maintaining the monopole compactly. Meanwhile, the combination of the RLC loads and the sleeve monopole ensures wideband omnidirectional radiation performance. To validate the design, a prototype operating from 200 to 1500 MHz is fabricated and tested. The measurement results demonstrate that the monopole achieves a VSWR below 3 across the entire operating band and a measured gain exceeding 0 dB. Furthermore, the monopole exhibits satisfactory out-of-band rejection from 1700 to 4000 MHz, confirming its effective filtering capability. Full article

In today’s oncology, immunotherapy arises as a potent complement for conventional cancer treatment, allowing for obtaining better patient outcomes. B7-H3 (CD276) is a member of the B7 protein family, which emerged as an attractive target for the treatment of various tumors. The molecule modulates anti-cancer immune responses, acting through diverse signaling pathways and cell populations. It has been implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous malignancies, including melanoma, gliomas, lung cancer, gynecological cancers, renal cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, and others, fostering the immunosuppressive environment and marking worse prognosis for the patients. B7-H3 targeting therapies, such as monoclonal antibodies, antibody–drug conjugates, and CAR T-cells, present promising results in preclinical studies and are the subject of ongoing clinical trials. CAR-T therapies against B7-H3 have demonstrated utility in malignancies such as melanoma, glioblastoma, prostate cancer, and RCC. Moreover, ADCs targeting B7-H3 exerted cytotoxic effects on glioblastoma, neuroblastoma cells, prostate cancer, and craniopharyngioma models. B7-H3-targeting also delivers promising results in combined therapies, enhancing the response to other immune checkpoint inhibitors and giving hope for the development of approaches with minimized adverse effects. However, the strategies of B7-H3 blocking deliver substantial challenges, such as poorly understood molecular mechanisms behind B7-H3 protumor properties or therapy toxicity. In this review, we discuss B7-H3’s role in modulating immune responses, its significance for various malignancies, and clinical trials evaluating anti-B7-H3 immunotherapeutic strategies, focusing on the clinical potential of the molecule. Invasive candidiasis (IC), characterized by the most common clinical manifestation of candidemia, is a fungal infection with a high mortality rate and a significant impact on global public health. It is estimated that each year there are between 227,000 and 250,000 hospitalizations related to IC, with more than 100,000 associated deaths. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LA&C), the absence of a standardized surveillance system has led to multicenter studies documenting incidences ranging from 0.74 to 6.0 cases per 1000 hospital admissions, equivalent to 50,000–60,000 hospitalizations annually, with mortality rates of up to 60% in certain high-risk groups. Armed conflicts and structural violence in LA&C cause forced displacement, the collapse of health systems, and poor living conditions—such as overcrowding, malnutrition, and lack of sanitation—which increase vulnerability to opportunistic infections, such as IC. Insufficient specialized laboratories, diagnostic technology, and trained personnel impede pathogen identification and delay timely initiation of antifungal therapy. Furthermore, the empirical use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and the limited availability of echinocandins and lipid formulations of amphotericin B have promoted the emergence of resistant non-albicans strains, such as Candida tropicalis, Candida parapsilosis, and, in recent outbreaks, Candidozyma auris. Background: Hip fractures represent a major clinical challenge, particularly in elderly and frail patients, where postoperative pain control must balance effective analgesia with motor preservation to facilitate early mobilization. Various regional anesthesia techniques are used in this setting, including the pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block, fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB), femoral nerve block (FNB), and quadratus lumborum block (QLB), yet optimal strategies remain debated. Objectives: To systematically review the efficacy, safety, and clinical applicability of major regional anesthesia techniques for pain management in hip fractures, including considerations of fracture type, surgical approach, and functional outcomes. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the virtual library of the Hospital Central de la Defensa “Gómez Ulla” up to March 2025. Inclusion criteria were RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses evaluating regional anesthesia for hip surgery in adults. Risk of bias in RCTs was assessed using RoB 2.0, and certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE approach. Results: Twenty-nine studies were included, comprising RCTs, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. PENG block demonstrated superior motor preservation and reduced opioid consumption compared to FICB and FNB, particularly in intracapsular fractures and anterior surgical approaches. FICB and combination strategies (PENG+LFCN or sciatic block) may provide broader analgesic coverage in extracapsular fractures or posterior approaches. The overall risk of bias across RCTs was predominantly low, and certainty of evidence ranged from moderate to high for key outcomes. No significant safety concerns were identified across techniques, although reporting of adverse events was inconsistent. Conclusions: PENG block appears to offer a favorable balance of analgesia and motor preservation in hip fracture surgery, particularly for intracapsular fractures. For extracapsular fractures or posterior approaches, combination strategies may enhance analgesic coverage. Selection of block technique should be tailored to fracture type, surgical approach, and patient-specific functional goals. Full article

Background/Objectives: Aberrant expression of high-mobility group protein B1 (HMGB1) has been linked to cancer development and progression. Methods: To better comprehend the role of HMGB1 expression in cancer, a tissue microarray containing 14,966 samples from 134 different tumor entities and 608 samples of 76 different normal tissue types was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Results: Strong HMGB1 staining occurred in almost all normal cell types and in most cancers. Of 11,808 evaluable cancers, only 7.8% showed complete absence of HMGB1 staining (HMGB1 deficiency) while 9.9% showed 1+, 25.0% showed 2+, and 57.2% showed 3+ HMGB1 positivity. Absence of HMGB1 staining mostly occurred in pheochromocytoma (90.0%), seminoma (72.4%), gastrointestinal stromal tumor (28.6%), adrenal cortical carcinoma (25.0%), and Hodgkin’s lymphoma (25.0%). Low HMGB1 staining was linked to poor histologic grade (p < 0.0001), advanced pT stage (p < 0.0001), high UICC stage (p < 0.0001), and distant metastasis (p = 0.0413) in clear cell renal cell carcinoma, invasive tumor growth in urothelial carcinoma (pTa vs. pT2–4, p < 0.0001), mismatch repair deficiency (p = 0.0167) in colorectal cancers, and advanced pT stage in invasive breast carcinoma of no special type (p = 0.0038). Strong HMGB1 staining was linked to nodal metastases in high-grade serous ovarian carcinomas (p = 0.0213) and colorectal adenocarcinomas (p = 0.0137), as well as to poor histological grade in squamous cell carcinomas (p = 0.0010). Conclusions: HMGB1 deficiency and reduced HMGB1 expression occur in a broad range of different tumor entities. Low rather than strong HMGB1 staining is often linked to an aggressive tumor phenotype. Whether HMGB1 deficiency renders cells susceptible to specific drugs remains to be determined. Full article

Genetic Complexity in Spondyloarthritis: Contributions of HLA-B Alleles Beyond HLA-B*27 in Romanian Patients

This study examined the distribution and disease associations of non-HLA-B*27 HLA-B alleles in Romanian spondyloarthritis (SpA) patients, aiming to address the underrepresentation of Eastern European populations in immunogenetic research. Methods: We analyzed 263 HLA-B*27-negative patients from Northeastern Romania fulfilling ASAS criteria. HLA-B genotyping was performed at two-digit resolution, and allele distributions were compared with two Romanian HLA-B*27-negative control groups (n = 335 and n = 1705 cases), using chi-square testing and logistic regression. Compared to controls, HLA-B*47 (p = 0.0007) and HLA-B*54 (p = 0.0013) were significantly enriched, while HLA-B*40 was underrepresented (p = 0.0287). Notably, HLA-B*54 was observed exclusively in axial SpA. Within the cohort, both HLA-B*13 and HLA-B*57 alleles were associated with psoriasis, while HLA-B*37 and HLA-B*41 alleles were clustered within the reactive arthritis group. The HLA-B*35 and HLA-B*18 alleles were the most frequently observed alleles across most clinical phenotypes. When comparing the frequency of HLA-B associations, the most common genotypes among SpA patients were B*08-B*18, B*13-B*35, and B*35-B*51. Notably, B*08-B*18 was more frequent in patients with radiographic sacroiliitis grade ≥ 2, while B*35-B*51 was more frequent in those with confirmed systemic inflammation, as indicated by elevated CRP or ESR levels. Analysis of peptide-binding patterns revealed a cluster of risk alleles, HLA-B*08, B*18, B*35, B*40, and B*54, sharing similar features, distinct from the canonical profile of B*27. These findings highlight the contribution of non-B*27 HLA-B alleles to SpA susceptibility in an Eastern European population and support the notion that HLA-B*27-negative SpA may represent a distinct clinical and immunological entity, driven by alternative pathogenic mechanisms. They also emphasize the importance of population-specific immunogenetic profiling and support expanding genetic characterization in HLA-B*27-negative patients. Full article

Illegal logging is a major threat to tropical forests; however, control mechanisms and efforts to combat illegal logging have not effectively curbed fraud in the production chain, highlighting the need for effective methods to verify the geographic origin of timber. This study investigates the application of multi-elemental analysis combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to discriminate the provenance of tropical timber in the Brazilian Legal Amazon. Wood samples of Hymenaea courbaril L. (Jatobá), Handroanthus sp. (Ipê), and Manilkara huberi (Ducke) A. Chevalier. (Maçaranduba) were taken from multiple sites. Elemental concentrations were determined via Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), and CA was applied to evaluate geographic differentiation. Significant differences in elemental profiles were found among locations, particularly when using the intermediate disk portions (25% to 75%), and especially the average of all five sampled portions, which proved most effective in geographic discrimination of the trunk. Elements such as Ca, Sr, Cr, Cu, Zn, and B were especially important for spatial discrimination. These findings underscore the forensic potential of multi-elemental wood profiling as a tool to support law enforcement and environmental monitoring by providing scientifically grounded evidence of timber origin. Bifidobacterium adolescentis is prevalent in the gastrointestinal tract of healthy humans, and significantly influences host health. Recent studies have predominantly investigated the probiotic characteristics of individual strains and their specific metabolic roles, whereas analyses at the population genome level have been limited to date. This study conducted a comparative genomics analysis of 543 B. adolescentis genomes to explore genetic background variations and functional gene differences across geographically diverse populations. The results revealed significant differences in genome size and GC content among populations from Asia, Europe, and North America (p < 0.05). The pan-gene exhibited an open structure, reflecting the substantial genetic diversity within B. adolescentis. Functional annotation demonstrated that B. adolescentis possesses numerous protein-coding genes and abundant carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZys) implicated in carbohydrate degradation and transformation. Population-specific CAZys were identified, suggesting adaptive evolution driven by distinct regional dietary patterns. Full article

Scanning When Passing: A Reliable and Valid Standardized Soccer Test

Background/Objectives: In soccer, scanning before receiving the ball helps players better perceive and interpret their surroundings, enabling faster and more effective passes. Despite its importance, no standardized tests currently incorporate scanning actions into assessments of passing abilities. In this study, we test the reliability and validity of a battery of passing tests that assess a player’s ability to control and pass the ball while also scanning for the appropriate target. Methods: We designed three passing tests that reflect different scanning demands that are routinely placed upon players during matches. Using players from the first and reserve teams of two professional clubs in Ghana (Club A, first-team n = 11, reserve-team n = 10; Club B, first-team n = 16, reserve-team n = 17), we: (i) tested the repeatability of each passing test (intraclass correlations), (ii) assessed whether the tests could distinguish between first and reserve team players (linear mixed-effects model), and (iii) examined whether players who were better in the passing tests had higher performances in 3v1 Rondo possession games (linear models). Results: All passing tests were significantly repeatable (ICCs = 0.77–0.85). Performance was highest in the 120-degree test (30.11 ± 7.22 passes/min), where scanning was not required, and was lowest in the 360-degree test (25.55 ± 5.94 passes/min), where players needed to constantly scan behind them. When players were scanning through an arc of 180 degrees, their average performance was 27.41 ± 6.14 passes/min. Overall passing performance significantly distinguished first from reserve team players (β = −1.47, t (51) = −4.32, p < 0.001)) and was positively associated with 3v1 Rondo possession performance (R2 = 0.51, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results show that these passing tests are reliable, distinguish players across competitive levels, and correlate with performance in possession games. These tests offer a simple, ecologically valid way to assess scanning and passing abilities for elite players. Full article

Immunoglobulin light chains are essential components of intact immunoglobulins, traditionally believed to be produced exclusively by B cells. Physiologically, excess light chains not assembled into intact antibodies exist as free light chains (FLCs). Increasingly recognized as important biomarkers for diseases such as multiple myeloma, systemic amyloidosis, and light chain-related renal injuries, FLCs have also been shown in recent decades to originate from non-B cell sources, including epithelial and carcinoma cells. This review primarily focuses on novel non-B cell-derived FLCs, which challenge the conventional paradigms. It systematically compares B cell-derived and non-B cell-derived FLCs, analyzing differences in genetic features, physicochemical properties, and functional roles in both health and disease. By elucidating the distinctions and similarities in their nature as immune regulators and disease mediators, we highlight the significant clinical potential of FLCs, particularly non-B cell-derived FLCs, for novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Proteomic profiling using ultrafast chromatography–mass spectrometry provides valuable insights into plant responses to abiotic factors by linking molecular changes with physiological outcomes. Nanopriming, a novel approach involving the treatment of seeds with nanoparticles, has demonstrated potential for enhancing plant metabolism and productivity. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying nanoparticle-induced effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the impact of gold nanoparticle (Au-NP) seed priming on the proteome of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings. Differentially regulated proteins (DRPs) were identified, revealing a pronounced reorganization of the photosynthetic apparatus (PSA). Both the light-dependent reactions and the Calvin cycle were affected, with significant upregulation of chloroplast-associated protein complexes, including PsbC (CP43), chlorophyll a/b-binding proteins, Photosystem I subunits (PsaA and PsaB), and the γ-subunit of ATP synthase. The large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCo) exhibited over a threefold increase in expression in Au-NP-treated seedlings. The proteomic changes in the large subunit RuBisCo L were corroborated by transcriptomic data. Importantly, the proteomic changes were supported by physiological and biochemical analyses, ultrastructural modifications in chloroplasts, and increased photosynthetic activity. Our findings suggest that Au-NP nanopriming triggers coordinated molecular responses, enhancing the functional activity of the PSA. Identified DRPs may serve as potential biomarkers for further elucidation of nanopriming mechanisms and for the development of precision strategies to improve crop productivity. Full article

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are often seen solely as harmful byproducts of oxidative metabolism, yet evidence reveals their paradoxical roles in both promoting and inhibiting cancer progression. Despite advances, precise context-dependent mechanisms by which ROS modulate oncogenic signaling, therapeutic response, and tumor microenvironment dynamics remain unclear. Specifically, the spatial and temporal aspects of ROS regulation (i.e., the distinct effects of mitochondrial versus cytosolic ROS on the PI3K/Akt and NF-κB pathways, and the differential cellular outcomes driven by acute versus chronic ROS exposure) have been underexplored. Additionally, the specific contributions of ROS-generating enzymes, like NOX isoforms and xanthine oxidase, to tumor microenvironment remodeling and immune modulation remain poorly understood. This review synthesizes current findings with a focus on these critical gaps, offering novel mechanistic insights into the dualistic nature of ROS in cancer biology. By systematically integrating data on ROS source-specific functions and redox-sensitive signaling pathways, the complex interplay between ROS concentration, localization, and persistence is elucidated, revealing how these factors dictate the paradoxical support of tumor progression or induction of cancer cell death. Particular attention is given to antioxidant mechanisms, including NRF2-mediated responses, that may undermine the efficacy of ROS-targeted therapies. Recent breakthroughs in redox biosensors (i.e., redox-sensitive fluorescent proteins, HyPer variants, and peroxiredoxin–FRET constructs) enable precise, real-time ROS imaging across subcellular compartments. Translational advances, including redox-modulating drugs and synthetic lethality strategies targeting glutathione or NADPH dependencies, further highlight actionable vulnerabilities. This refined understanding advances the field by highlighting context-specific vulnerabilities in tumor redox biology and guiding more precise therapeutic strategies. Continued research on redox-regulated signaling and its interplay with inflammation and therapy resistance is essential to unravel ROS dynamics in tumors and develop targeted, context-specific interventions harnessing their dual roles. Objectives: Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745, a probiotic yeast, is effectively used for the treatment of acute diarrhea as well as for the prevention and treatment of traveller‘s diarrhea and diarrhea under tube feeding. The underlying mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Both antitoxic and regulatory effects on the intestinal barrier, mediated either by the yeast or yeast-derived substrates, have been discussed. Methods: To examine the effects of Saccharomyces boulardii released substrates (S.b.S) on gastrointestinal (GI) barrier function, a murine small intestinal organoid cell model under stress was used. Stress was induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure or withdrawal of growth factors from cell culture medium (GFRed). Stressed organoids were treated with S.b.S (200 µg/mL), and markers of GI barrier and inflammatory response were assessed. Results: GFRed-induced stress was characterized by disturbances in selected tight junction (TJ) (p < 0.05), adherent junction (AJ) (p < 0.001), and mucin (Muc) formation (p < 0.01), measured by gene expressions, whereby additional S.b.S treatment was found to reverse these effects by increasing Muc2 (from 0.22 to 0.97-fold change, p < 0.05), Occludin (Ocln) (from 0.37 to 3.5-fold change, p < 0.0001), and Claudin (Cldn)7 expression (from 0.13 ± 0.066-fold change, p < 0.05) and by decreasing Muc1, Cldn2, Cldn5, and junctional adhesion molecule A (JAM-A) expression (all p < 0.01). Further, S.b.S normalized expression of nucleotide binding oligomerization domain (Nod)2- (from 44.5 to 0.51, p < 0.0001) and matrix metalloproteinase (Mmp)7-dependent activation (from 28.3 to 0.02875 ± 0.0044 ** p < 0.01) of antimicrobial peptide defense and reduced the expression of several inflammatory markers, such as myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (Myd88) (p < 0.01), tumor necrosis factor α (Tnfα) (p < 0.01), interleukin (IL)-6 (p < 0.01), and IL-1β (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our data provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms by which Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745-derived secretome attenuates inflammatory responses and restores GI barrier function in small intestinal organoids. In general, the silkworm, Bombyx mori, has a diapause trait in its eggs. Therefore, transgenic silkworm can be produced by embryonic microinjection using eggs laid by a non-diapause strain in B. mori. In this study, we performed microinjection using eggs of diapause strains which have good characteristics for industrial use, such as a big cocoon, thin and smooth silk, and tolerance against disease due to the growing industrial use of transgenic silkworms. For the conversion of egg diapause traits from diapause to non-diapause types, we used anti-serum against the diapause hormone of B. mori (BmDH), which was injected into maternal pupae, producing non-diapause eggs at a high rate. Finally, we attempted microinjection using three diapause strains with different voltinism (i.e., number of generations of an organism in a year) and were able to successfully produce transgenic silkworms in all three of them, demonstrating that our method is applicable to a wide range of silkworm strains with a diapause trait. Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder characterized by vascular abnormalities, immune dysfunction, and progressive fibrosis. One of the most common manifestations of SSc is interstitial lung disease (ILD), known by a progressive course leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Aim: to investigate autoantibodies, cytokines, and genetic markers in SSc-ILD through a systematic review and analysis of a Kazakh cohort of SSc-ILD patients. Methods: A PubMed search over the past 10 years was performed with “SSc-ILD”, “autoantibodies”, “cytokines”, and “genes”. Thirty patients with SSc were assessed for lung involvement, EScSG score, and modified Rodnan skin score. IL-6 was measured by ELISA, antinuclear factor on HEp-2 cells by indirect immunofluorescence, and specific autoantibodies by immunoblotting. Genetic analysis was performed using a 120-gene AmpliSeq panel on the Ion Proton platform. Results: The literature review identified 361 articles, 26 addressed autoantibodies, 20 genetic variants, and 12 cytokine profiles. Elevated levels of IL-6, TGF-β, IL-33, and TNF-α were linked to SSc. Based on the results of the systemic review, we created a preliminary immunogenic panel for SSc-ILD with following analysis in Kazakh patients with SSc (n = 30). Fourteen of them (46.7%) demonstrated signs of ILD and/or lung hypertension, with frequent detection of antibodies such as Scl-70, U1-snRNP, SS-A, and genetic variants in SAMD9L, REL, IRAK1, LY96, IL6R, ITGA2B, AIRE, TREX1, and CD40 genes. Conclusions: Current research confirmed the presence of the broad range of autoantibodies and variations in IRAK1, TNFAIP3, SAMD9L, REL, IRAK1, LY96, IL6R, ITGA2B, AIRE, TREX1, CD40 genes in of Kazakhstani cohort of SSc-ILD patients.
