A novel stainless steel with high Mn and Mo content (much higher than traditional stainless steel), designated CH241SS, was developed as a potential replacement for Cr-Mo-V alloy steel in the cold forging applications of precision industry. Through carbon reduction in an environmentally friendly manner and a two-stage heat treatment process, the hardness of as-cast CH241 was tailored from HRC 37 to HRC 29, thereby meeting the industrial specifications of cold-forged steel (≤HRC 30). X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-cast microstructure revealed the presence of a small amount of ferrite, martensite, austenite, and alloy carbides. After heat treatment, CH241 exhibited a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite with dispersed Cr(Ni-Mo) alloy carbides. The CH241 alloy demonstrated excellent high-temperature stability. No noticeable softening occurred after 72 h for the second-stage heat treatment. Based on the mechanical and room-temperature tensile fatigue properties of CH241-F (forging material) and CH241-ST (soft-tough heat treatment), it was demonstrated that the CH241 stainless steel was superior to the traditional stainless steel 4xx in terms of strength and fatigue life. Therefore, CH241 stainless steel can be introduced into cold forging and can be used in precision fatigue application. The relevant data include composition design and heat treatment properties. This study is an important milestone in assisting the upgrading of the vehicle and aerospace industries. Full article

Background: Differences of sex development (DSD) are a group of congenital conditions characterized by atypical development of genital structures. The diagnosis is complex and involves clinical, hormonal, and genetic evaluations. Objective: To describe the clinical profile, diagnosis, and management of patients with DSD, with particular attention to genetic diagnosis. Study design: Retrospective study from a tertiary care pediatric hospital in Italy. Methods: 420 patients with DSD referred to the Endocrine Unit of Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome, Italy, between 2016 and 2023 were included. Results: 75 patients had a 46,XY karyotype, 135 had a 46,XX karyotype, and 210 had chromosomal mosaicism. In our group of pediatric DSD patients, 21/420 patients were born from pregnancies induced with assisted reproduction techniques (ICSI/FIVET). Of these 21 patients, 5 had sex chromosome mosaicism. Using next-generation sequencing (NGS), we identified three new genetic variants: one in the AR gene, one in the NR5A1 gene, and one in the SRY gene. The use of NGS significantly improved the diagnostic yield, and a definitive diagnosis was reached in 84.76% of the entire cohort. Conclusions: This study highlights the challenges in the management of patients with DSD from early recognition to treatment and follow-up. A multidisciplinary approach is essential for a comprehensive evaluation of these conditions and to understand the role and clinical significance of the genetic variants. Full article

We present a numerical investigation comparing two entanglement generation protocols in finite XX spin chains with varying spin magnitudes (s=1/2,1,3/2). Protocol 1 (P1) relies on staggered couplings to steer correlations toward the ends of the chain. At the same time, Protocol 2 (P2) adopts a dual-port architecture that uses optimized boundary fields to mediate virtual excitations between terminal spins. Our results show that P2 consistently outperforms P1 in all spin values, generating higher-fidelity entanglement in shorter timescales when evaluated under the same system parameters. Furthermore, P2 exhibits superior robustness under realistic imperfections, including diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, as well as dephasing noise. To further assess the resilience of both protocols in experimentally relevant settings, we employ the pseudomode formalism to characterize the impact of non-Markovian noise on the entanglement dynamics. Our analysis reveals that the dual-port mechanism (P2) remains effective even when memory effects are present, as it reduces the excitation of bulk modes that would otherwise enhance environment-induced backflow. Together, the scalability, efficiency, and noise resilience of the dual-port approach position it as a promising framework for entanglement distribution in solid-state quantum information platforms. Previous research has demonstrated sex-specific differences in muscle cells regarding sex hormone release and steroidogenic enzyme expression after testosterone exposure. The present study aims to elucidate sex-related differences in intracellular processes involved in myogenesis and regeneration. Neonatal 46XX and 46XY human primary skeletal muscle cells were treated with increasing doses of testosterone (0.5, 2, 5, 10, 32, and 100 nM) for 24 h. The molecular pathways involved in muscle metabolism and growth, as well as the release of myokines involved in satellite cell activation, were analyzed using western blot, real-time PCR, and a Luminex assay. The unpaired Student’s t-test and one-way ANOVA for repeated measures were used to determine significant variations within and between groups. An increase in the expression and release of MYF6, IGF-I, IGF-II, and CXCL1, as well as a decrease in GM-CSF, IL-9, and IL-12, was observed in 46XX cells. Conversely, testosterone up-regulated GM-CSF and CXCL1 in 46XY cells but did not affect the release of the other myokines. Preferential activation of the MAPK pathway was observed in 46XX cells, while the PI3K/AKT pathway was preferentially activated in 46XY cells. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate differential responses to androgen exposure in 46XX and 46XY cells, resulting in the activation of muscle cell growth and energy metabolic pathways in a sex-specific manner. This study investigates Mn1−xXxB (X = Fe, Co) and (Fe1−xCox)2B nanoparticles as candidates for self-controlled magnetic hyperthermia (SCMH) in cancer therapy. Using a microscopic model and Green’s function techniques, we calculate the Curie temperature, saturation magnetization, coercivity, and specific absorption rate as functions of nanoparticle size and dopant concentration. Surface and size effects are taken into account. The results are in good agreement with experimental data, confirming the model’s validity and highlighting the potential of these nanoparticles for efficient and safe magnetic hyperthermia applications. We have found that pure and doped MnB and Co2B nanoparticles with specific compositions meet biocompatibility requirements for SCMH suitable for in vivo and in vitro, for example, Mn0.6Co0.4B (d = 27.1 nm); Mn0.5Co0.5B (d = 32.2 nm); MnB (d = 26.3 m); (Fe0.2Co0.8)2B (d = 22.0 nm); (Fe0.1Co0.9)2B (d = 26.3 nm); and Co2B (d = 31.7 nm). Floating Texts: Listening Practices in the Accounts of Foreign River Expeditions in Brazil

Western written travel narratives are a byproduct of the privileging of vision as the primary means of knowledge production, an epistemology often imposed on indigenous peoples through colonial practices. In contrast, indigenous cultures in Brazil have long relied on listening as a central way of engaging with their environment. In the present essay, I examine how listening practices appear in the written accounts produced by members of three foreign river expeditions in Brazil from the 16th to the 20th century. I analyzed travel accounts from Gaspar de Carvajal’s Relación del Nuevo Descubrimiento del Famoso Río Grande (XVI century), Hercules Florence’s Voyage Fluvial du Tieté à l’Amazone (XIX), and Theodore Roosevelt’s In the Jungles of Brazil (XX). To explore what these travelers might have heard, I also collaborated with a sound designer to create a soundscape using actual recordings of local fauna and indigenous chants and music. The results show a variety of listening modes put into practice such as conquest-driven, scientific observation, contemplation, and hunting-focused and aesthetic appreciation. These narratives illustrate how European epistemologies reinforced Western dominance by shaping both colonial encounters and scientific approaches to Brazilian wilderness exploration. Full article

In American Hybrid (2009), Cole Swenson describes hybrid poetics as a reconciliation between the two dominant poetic traditions of the 20th century, which might be called lyric and experimental (xx–xxi). More recently, however, “hybrid” refers to any work blurring boundaries between poetry and other genres. This is most notable in the ever-increasing interest in the lyric essay but also in the constant revision of contemporary elegy as anti-elegy. In Poetry of Mourning, Jahan Ramazani defines anti-elegy in terms of its refusal of consolation and instead its seeking of more melancholic mourning. Subsequently, as noted by Bardazzi, Binetti, and Culler, “Elegy remains a poetic genre and yet, it has also developed a ‘mode of discourse’ that moves beyond its literary borders and finds its expressions in entangled intra-actions between the most diverse range of elegiac objects”. In the early 21st century, hybrid elegy represents the collision of two major changes in American culture: the changing nature of American death rituals and the increasingly intermedial literary landscape. Drawing on examples from Nox by Anne Carson and Ghost Of by Diane Khoi Nguyen, an elegiac version of the hyper-personalized American death ritual is inscribed in assemblages of images and text on the page. When read as a personalized American death ritual, the hybrid elegy materializes its own tradition and poetics, which are expressed in the poetic constraints of assemblage and recognizable in their reliance on elegiac repetition. In recent years, gender medicine has emerged as a field of research analyzing sex-related differences in health and disease. Biological sex, depending on sex chromosome complement, sex steroid hormones, and reproductive organs, has been demonstrated to influence human susceptibility to infections, immune responses against pathogens, the clinical severity of infectious diseases, and responses to the available treatments. Men and women differ in their chromosome set, with men having one X chromosome (XY) and women two (XX). This different genetic composition results in a sex-dimorphic expression of genes and pathways involved in immune regulation, as well as in shaping immune responses to infectious agents. Moreover, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, impacting cells and pathways involved in both innate and adaptive immunity, have been shown to drive sex dimorphism in infectious diseases. This narrative review aims to explore the sex-related differences in responses to infections, specifically focusing on the underlying genetic and hormonal mechanisms. Hence, aging-related changes in the immune system and their potential impact on immune responses against pathogens will be discussed. Understanding sex differences and stratifying the population according to them will open the door to precision medicine and personalized patient care. Full article

Investigation of the Effect of Molecules Containing Sulfonamide Moiety Adsorbed on the FAPbI3 Perovskite Surface: A First-Principles Study

First-principles calculations were conducted to examine the impact of three sulfonamide-containing molecules (H4N2O2S, CH8N4O3S, and C2H2N6O4S) adsorbed on the FAPbI3(001) perovskite surface, aiming to establish a significant positive correlation between the molecular structures and their regulatory effects on the perovskite surface. A systematic comparison was conducted to evaluate the adsorption stability of the three molecules on the two distinct surface terminations. The results show that all three molecules exhibit strong adsorption on the FAPbI3(001) surface, with C2H12N6O4S demonstrating the most favorable binding stability due to its extended frameworks and multiple electron-donating/withdrawing groups. Simpler molecules lacking carbon skeletons exhibit weaker adsorption and less dependence on surface termination. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) further corroborated the thermal stability of the stable adsorption configurations at elevated temperatures. Electronic structure analysis reveals that molecular adsorption significantly reconstructs the density of states (DOS) on the PbI2-terminated surface, inducing shifts in band-edge states and enhancing energy-level coupling between molecular orbitals and surface states. In contrast, the FAI-terminated surface shows weaker interactions. Charge density difference (CDD) analysis indicates that the molecules form multiple coordination bonds (e.g., Pb–O, Pb–S, and Pb–N) with uncoordinated Pb atoms, facilitated by –SO2–NH2 groups. Bader charge and work function analyses indicate that the PbI2-terminated surface exhibits more pronounced electronic coupling and interfacial charge transfer. The C2H12N6O4S adsorption system demonstrates the most substantial reduction in work function. Optical property calculations show a distinct red-shift in the absorption edge along both the XX and YY directions for all adsorption systems, accompanied by enhanced absorption intensity and broadened spectral range. These findings suggest that sulfonamide-containing molecules, particularly C2H12N6O4S with extended carbon skeletons, can effectively stabilize the perovskite interface, optimize charge transport pathways, and enhance light-harvesting performance. Nile tilapia, as an ideal model for studying sex differentiation, is a popular farmed fish worldwide with a stable XX/XY sex-determination system. In tilapia, ovarian differentiation is triggered by estradiol-17β (E2) production in undifferentiated gonads. In a previous study, we suggested that follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) signaling might be involved in ovarian differentiation in Nile tilapia. In this study, we further investigated the role of FSH signaling in ovarian differentiation via aromatase expression, which converts testosterone to E2. Masculinization of XX fry by aromatase inhibitor or 17α-methyltestosterone leads to suppression of fshr expression. Feminization of XY fry by E2 treatment increased fshr expression from 15 days after hatching, when E2 treatment was terminated. XX tilapia developed ovaries harboring aromatase expression if fsh and fshr were double knockdowns by morpholino-oligo injections. Finally, the transcriptional activity in the upstream region of the aromatase gene (cyp19a1a) was further increased by FSH stimulation when HEK293T cells were co-transfected with foxl2 and ad4bp/sf1. Collectively, this study suggests that the role of FSH signaling is not critical in tilapia ovarian differentiation; however, FSH signaling may have a compensatory role in ovarian differentiation by increasing cyp19a1a transcription in cooperation with foxl2 and ad4bp/sf1 in Nile tilapia. Background: In this study, we aimed to analyze androgen receptor (AR) gene mutations in five members of a family with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS). Methods: Peripheral blood samples were collected from the proband and four relatives (mother, sister, and two aunts). Cytogenetic imaging and chromosomal analysis were per-formed to elucidate the genetic basis of the condition. Clinical Exome Sequencing (CES) was conducted to identify candidate variants, which were subsequently validated using Sanger sequencing. Evolutionary conservation analysis was performed for the identified AR gene mutation. Results: Our analyses revealed that the proband, sister, Aunt I, and Aunt II exhibited a 46,XY karyotype and carried the SRY gene. The mother, however, had a 46,XX karyotype, and did not carry the SRY gene, confirming X-linked recessive inheritance of the condition. CES results demonstrated that the proband, sister, Aunt I, and Aunt II harbored a hemizygous c.2246C>T (p.Ala749Val) mutation, while the mother carried this mutation in a heterozygous state. The presence of this mutation was confirmed by Sanger sequencing. Evolutionary conservation analysis indicated that the mutation is conserved among vertebrates. Conclusion: in conclusion, we identified a novel missense mutation (c.2246C>T) in the AR gene in five members of a CAIS-affected family, which has not been previously reported in the literature. Glaesserella parasuis (G. parasuis) is the primary pathogen responsible for Glässer’s disease and poses a significant threat to the global pig industry. MicroRNAs are a class of short, endogenous, single-stranded noncoding RNAs that play crucial roles in inflammation, apoptosis, proliferation, differentiation, and invasion in various organisms. This study analyzed the characteristics of porcine alveolar macrophage (PAM) cells infected with G. parasuis through the knockdown and overexpression of ssc-miR-129a-3p. We constructed a cellular model with ssc-miR-129a-3p knockdown invaded by G. parasuis strain XX0306, screening 160 differentially expressed genes via high-throughput sequencing. GO enrichment analysis revealed that 376 GO entries were enriched. KEGG enrichment analysis found that mRNA target genes were enriched in 17 cell signaling pathways, including G protein-coupled components, PPAR, and other signaling pathways that can mediate inflammatory pathways. By examining the expression of relevant inflammatory factors and signaling pathways, we elucidated the molecular mechanisms through which ssc-miR-129a-3p targets the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway to regulate inflammatory injury. This study establishes a foundation for further research into the role of miRNA in the pathogenesis of Glässer disease and is highly significant for the prevention and control of bacterial diseases within the pig industry. This paper introduces a two-phase decision support system based on information theory and financial practices to assist investors in solving cardinality-constrained portfolio optimization problems. Firstly, the approach employs a stock-picking procedure based on an interactive multi-criteria decision-making method (the so-called TODIM method). More precisely, the best-performing assets from the investable universe are identified using three financial criteria. The first criterion is based on mutual information, and it is employed to capture the microstructure of the stock market. The second one is the momentum, and the third is the upside-to-downside beta ratio. To calculate the preference weights used in the chosen multi-criteria decision-making procedure, two methods are compared, namely equal and entropy weighting. In the second stage, this work considers a portfolio optimization model where the objective function is a modified version of the Sharpe ratio, consistent with the choices of a rational agent even when faced with negative risk premiums. Additionally, the portfolio design incorporates a set of bound, budget, and cardinality constraints, together with a set of risk budgeting restrictions. To solve the resulting non-smooth programming problem with non-convex constraints, this paper proposes a variant of the distance-based parameter adaptation for success-history-based differential evolution with double crossover (DISH-XX) algorithm equipped with a hybrid constraint-handling approach. Numerical experiments on the US and European stock markets over the past ten years are conducted, and the results show that the flexibility of the proposed portfolio model allows the better control of losses, particularly during market downturns, thereby providing superior or at least comparable ex post performance with respect to several benchmark investment strategies. The abundance of the Russian sturgeon population in the Sea of Azov declined many times in the XX–XXI centuries. This paper presents long-term annual and spatial occurrence datasets to create statistical and machine learning models to better understand the distribution patterns as well as biological and ecological features. The annual dataset provides annually averaged results of environmental and biotic population estimates obtained by in situ observations for 1925–2024. The spatial occurrence dataset contains raw survey observations with a bottom trawl over the period of 2000–2024. Preliminary diagnostics of the annual dataset reveal no evidence of non-stationarity or significant outliers that cannot be explained by biological parameters. The published dataset allows any researcher to perform statistical and machine learning-based analysis in order to compare and describe the population abundance or spatial occurrence of Russian sturgeon in the Sea of Azov. Complete Hydatiform Mole with a Coexisting Living Fetus: A Case Report

Background: Gestational trophoblastic diseases comprise the hydatiform moles (HMs), complete or partial, an abnormal development of trophoblastic tissue. HMs derive from a gametogenesis error during conception leading to an anomalous chromosomal asset. In the complete hydatiform mole (CHM), when one or two spermatozoa enter an empty oocyte, the karyotype, paternally derived, is diploid 46,XX or 46,XY. CHM is characterized by massive hydropic degeneration of the villi, with no fetal structures, easily detected by ultrasound (US) in early gestation, confirmed by elevated maternal beta-hCG levels. CHM with coexistent fetus (CHMCF) is an exceptional event with a high risk of malignant progression, and severe complications such as massive vaginal bleeding, preeclampsia, and fetal death. Methods/Results: We present a case of CHMCF in a 29-year-old woman, which resulted in a liveborn and healthy baby at 38 weeks of gestation. The patient was prenatally carefully monitored with biweekly US and periodic beta-hCG levels. Post-partum follow-up consisted of transvaginal US and beta-hCG levels at 1, 3, and 6 months. After 1 year post-delivery, both the mother and the newborn were healthy. Conclusions: CHMCF management can be challenging as shared guidelines are currently lacking and the case described may be helpful in adding more data. Full article
