The 2026 Battery Safety Workshop, 11–13 June 2026, Newark, DE, USA
Name: The 2026 Battery Safety Workshop
Date: 11–13 June 2026
Place: Newark, DE, USA
The Battery Safety Workshop (BSW) was launched in Charlotte, NC, in 2022, attracting around 100 attendees from universities, national labs, and industries each year.
This year, we’ve broadened the scope of the workshop from a traditional focus on battery safety to a more comprehensive vision of battery sustainability. While we will retain the term “safety” to preserve the workshop’s identity and legacy, we seek to define "safety" in a broader and more integrative sense. This expanded framework encompasses not only thermal and mechanical safety but long-term durability, safe and scalable manufacturing, responsible critical mineral processing, and recycling technologies. Through this broader lens, we aim to address the full lifecycle challenges of next-generation battery systems, from materials sourcing to end-of-life management.
The 2026 Battery Safety Workshop, hosted by the University of Delaware, will bring together leading experts from academia, industry, and national laboratories to address the growing challenges of battery safety across the energy storage landscape. As battery technologies become increasingly vital to transportation, grid storage, and consumer electronics, this workshop will focus on advancing safe design, material sustainability and recycling, testing, and deployment practices. The event will feature invited speakers, technical sessions, and networking opportunities covering key topics such as thermal runaway, mechanical abuse testing, predictive modeling, and regulatory developments. By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, BSW 2026 aims to accelerate the development of safer, more reliable, and commercially viable battery systems for a sustainable future.
