Interview with Dr. Silvia Sfameni—Winner of the Applied Sciences 2025 Travel Award

The following is an interview with Dr. Silvia Sfameni:

Congratulations on your award! Could you briefly introduce yourself to our readers and tell us a little bit about yourself and your fields of interest?

I am currently a TD Researcher at ISMN-CNR, working on the SAMOTHRACE project within the MUR-PNRR innovation ecosystem. My research focuses on the design, rational synthesis and characterization of hybrid and functional sol–gel-based micro/nanostructured materials, with a particular emphasis on enhancing protective performance and optimizing surface properties. Through this project, I am developing innovative materials to address critical challenges in material science, particularly in the context of precision agriculture.

Prior to this role, I completed a post-doctoral fellowship at ISMN-CNR under the PON MUR 2014-2020 TETI project. My research there was centered on the design and synthesis of smart, innovative materials for the development of sensors to monitor environmental pollutants. This interdisciplinary project combined material chemistry with environmental monitoring, aiming to create sensors capable of detecting and tracking pollutants—an essential tool for advancing sustainability.

I obtained my Ph.D. on 17 November 2022, with a thesis titled “Design and Development of Sustainable Nanotechnological Protective Systems in Surface Treatment”, earning my doctorate with final honors (cum laude). Additionally, I received the Doctor Europæus label, recognizing my international academic experience, in accordance with the European University Association’s standards. My doctoral research explored the synthesis of various nanostructured coatings and surface treatments, focusing on their properties and applications, with a strong emphasis on sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions.

Throughout my academic career, I have had the privilege of working closely with Dr. M.R. Plutino, which allowed me to explore cutting-edge materials with practical applications for environmental protection. Thanks to this, I had the opportunity to develop expertise across multiple disciplines, including Material Chemistry, Hi-tech Textiles, Polymer Science, and Nanotechnology, and I am particularly passionate about the interdisciplinary nature of my work, which bridges material science and environmental sustainability. By integrating into different fields, I strive to develop technologies that not only address current global challenges but also pave the way for future innovations. I am excited to continue my research, collaborate with experts from diverse fields, and contribute to the advancement of materials science in ways that promote sustainability and real-world impact.

How did you hear about this award, and how supportive this kind of award might be for researchers?

I heard about this award through a newsletter. Academic newsletters and those from scientific journals are often a great way to discover opportunities like awards. These email updates provide information about competitions, grants, and other funding opportunities for researchers, helping them stay informed and not miss important events in their field. This type of award can significantly support researchers by enabling them to participate in prestigious conferences, which enhances their visibility within the industry. Presenting their research at such events allows their work to reach a wider audience, potentially leading to collaborations, citations and new academic or industry opportunities. In essence, it helps researchers stay at the forefront of their fields, improving the impact and quality of their work. Furthermore, attending conferences through this award often provides access to collaborative opportunities that researchers might not have encountered otherwise, ranging from informal discussions to formal research partnerships.

Do you have any other suggestions on how our journal could further support young researchers and the academic community?

To further support young researchers and the academic community, my suggestion would be to introduce awards or recognition specifically for early career researchers. This would not only encourage their contributions but also provide them with valuable opportunities for visibility within the academic community.

Do you have any advice for aspiring young researchers looking to make a meaningful impact in their respective fields?

Research is a long and challenging journey, so it's important to be passionate about what you do. Believe in your work, stay consistent and your persistence will lead to success.

Another key factor is surrounding yourself with other researchers, mentors and professionals in your field. Finding an experienced mentor can guide you throughout your career, offering valuable insights, helping you navigate obstacles, and providing connections that will enhance your work.
