Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Water resource management is under unprecedented global pressure due to accelerating scarcity, deteriorating quality, aging infrastructure, and heightened climate variability. These interconnected challenges demand innovative, forward-looking solutions capable of anticipating risks, optimizing performance, and strengthening the resilience of water systems worldwide. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as a transformative force in this domain, enabling deeper insights into overall complex water treatment and management operations, accurate forecasting of water-related phenomena, and enhanced operational efficiency across treatment, distribution, and environmental management.

This Special Issue, titled “Artificial Intelligence for Smart Water Treatment and Management”, seeks to publish groundbreaking and novel research that advances the application of AI and machine learning across the full spectrum of water technology. Submissions to this issue that introduce new methodologies, intelligent frameworks, data-driven strategies, or compelling real-world demonstrations that push the boundaries of what AI can achieve in water treatment and management are welcome. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to,

  • Smart water quality monitoring and pollution detection;
  • Optimization and control of treatment, purification, and desalination processes;
  • Decision support for operational management, planning, and resource allocation;
  • Forecasting of demand, system behavior, and hydrological conditions;
  • Integrated sensing, IoT-enabled monitoring, and advanced data acquisition;
  • Early detection of system disturbances and predictive maintenance;
  • Adaptive, self-optimizing, or autonomous water treatment and distribution systems;
  • Case studies demonstrating impactful AI-driven solutions in real-world settings.

By assembling diverse and forward-looking contributions, this Special Issue aims to accelerate progress toward intelligent, resilient, and transformative water treatment and management solutions for the future.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
