Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Pressure on urban agglomerates and fresh water resources, both at local and regional scales, caused by population growth, rapid urbanization, impermeabilization, and anthropogenic activities, and associated with global warming and more frequent extreme events, is threatening urban areas and superficial and underground natural water bodies. In many regions of the world, these systems are not able to fully respond to changes and self-regenerate in terms of water quality and quantity, or they have no capacity to reach suitable natural equilibriums without well-planned external interventions. In a global context, urban infrastructures for water supply, stormwater control and management, and wastewater collection and treatment need to be planned, projected and operated in an integrated manner, connecting urbanization and metropolitan expansion to scientific and technological development, with streamlined delivery, consumption, collection and treatment, life cycle assessment and a circular economy, smart urban water management, watershed management, and environmental sustainability. Current topics of research in this challenging area include the following:
(i) The development and application of mathematical programming with single- and multi-objective optimization to water resources planning and management, both at local and basin levels;
(ii) New developments in the planning, design, operation and rehabilitation of urban water infrastructures;
(iii) Local versus regional water and sewage systems and corresponding challenges, including special structures and LIDs in urban stormwater networks, annual unit costs, global costs, and economies of scale;
(iv) Conventional and advanced wastewater treatment and interaction of the final product with the surrounding urban area, or reuse of treated effluent according to future intended uses.
The Leading Guest Editor of this Special Issue entitled “Sustainable Environmental Planning and Management of Urban Water Infrastructures and Water Resources” encourages and welcomes contributions in this area directly related to new developments in research topics including, but not limited to, those mentioned above, prepared either as full research articles, relevant case studies, review articles or short communications.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
