Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Carbon (C) and nutrients are fundamental elements regulating ecosystem structure, functioning, and biogeochemical processes. Aquatic ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, wetlands, and coastal waters, play a critical role in the transport, transformation, retention, and burial of carbon and nutrients across the Land-to-Ocean Aquatic Continuum (LOAC). Through complex interactions among biological, chemical, geological, and hydrological processes, aquatic ecosystems act not only as conduits linking terrestrial and marine environments but also as active reactors that regulate carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient cycling.

The cycling of carbon is tightly coupled with the dynamics of key nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). These interactions influence primary production, organic matter decomposition, ecosystem metabolism, eutrophication, and greenhouse gas production. Under the combined pressures of climate change and human activities, including land-use change, nutrient enrichment, dam construction, and hydrological alterations, the coupling mechanisms between carbon and nutrient cycles are undergoing substantial changes. However, significant uncertainties remain regarding the underlying biogeochemical processes, their environmental controls, and their implications for regional and global carbon and nutrient budgets.

This Special Issue in Water aims to document recent advances in understanding carbon and nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems. The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to:

(1) Observation, monitoring, modeling, and assessment of carbon and nutrient cycling processes in aquatic ecosystems;

(2) Coupled carbon–nitrogen–phosphorus (C–N–P) biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem metabolism;

(3) Carbon and nutrient fluxes, budgets, transport, retention, and burial from regional to global scales;

(4) Interactions between hydrological processes, nutrient dynamics, and carbon cycling;

(5) Greenhouse gas emissions and their links to carbon and nutrient transformations;

(6) Responses of aquatic biogeochemistry to climate change, eutrophication, and anthropogenic disturbances.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
