Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The lack of access to clean water, sanitation and treatment of wastewater is a global problem that affects people’s wellbeing in a variety of ways. Addressing the treatment of wastewater with simple and inexpensive solutions provides a variety of benefits, including improving health, income, food availability, and protecting ecosystems. Extensive research has proved that nature-based wastewater treatment systems, particularly treatment wetlands (TW), are sustainable, low-cost, and easy to operate. These treatment sytems are an excelent choice for developing countries and remote communities. The technical aspets of design and operation of TW are well established, but we need more research on their applicability in development projects, especially, in communities that face scarcity of food, water and sanitation. This Special Issue aims to showcase research on the aplication of treatment wetlands in development projects, e.g., aquaculture, floriculture, agriculture, etc., in poor and remote communities.
We invite the submission of research articles related to the use of TW in development projects. A variety of topics are welcome, including, but not limited to, the following:
- TW for treatment and reuse of storm, municipal, and industrial wastewater,
- use of TW in developing countries,
- use of TW for water reuse in arid climates,
- use TW in remote communities in cold climates,
- removal of common and emergent pollutants by TW in remote communities.
