Functional Visual Assessment Under Modulatory Influences

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue focuses on functional visual assessment under experimentally defined modulatory influences, examining how visual performance changes in response to controlled task demands or targeted interventions.

The scope is centered on quantitative measures of visual function, such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, chromatic and color discrimination, motion perception, binocular integration, and visual field sensitivity. Submissions should explicitly address how these functional outcomes are modulated by experimental conditions, including perceptual training, neuromodulation, pharmacological manipulation, or systematically varied task demands.

The emphasis of this Special Issue is on assessment and modulation of visual function, rather than on the development of new technologies or platforms. Advanced tools, such as adaptive psychophysical paradigms, eye tracking, electrophysiology, or immersive task environments, may be employed when they directly support functional visual measurement, but are not intended as standalone topics.

We particularly welcome studies that:

• use psychophysically grounded tasks to probe changes in visual performance,
• link modulation to interpretable functional outcomes,
• and demonstrate clear experimental control over observer state or intervention effects.

By focusing on functional outcomes under controlled modulation, this Special Issue aims to provide a coherent framework for understanding vision as a dynamic but measurable system, grounded in rigorous assessment rather than methodological breadth.
