Dear Colleagues,
The gastrointestinal microbiome is increasingly recognized as a central component of animal physiology, influencing nutrient utilization, mucosal integrity, immune homeostasis, metabolism, disease susceptibility, and responses to therapeutic or nutritional interventions. However, veterinary microbiome research remains fragmented across host species, gastrointestinal compartments, and disciplinary boundaries. Many studies focus on fecal community profiles, whereas the spatial organization, functional activity, host interactions, and translational relevance of microbial communities throughout the gastrointestinal tract remain incompletely understood. This Special Issue, “Gastrointestinal Microbiomes in Veterinary Medicine: From Host–Microbe Interactions to Health, Disease, Nutrition, and Precision Interventions,” aims to bring together original research, reviews, systematic reviews, and short communications that advance mechanistic and translational understanding of gastrointestinal microbiomes in livestock, poultry, companion animals, and other veterinary-relevant species. We particularly welcome studies addressing microbial ecology and function, host–microbe interactions, microbiome–nutrition relationships, dysbiosis and disease, microbial metabolites, probiotics and prebiotics, microbiome-informed breeding, multi-omics approaches, and precision microbiome interventions. By integrating fundamental microbial ecology with animal nutrition, clinical veterinary medicine, and precision intervention strategies, this collection will complement existing literature by moving beyond descriptive taxonomic surveys toward functional, spatial, causal, and application-oriented understanding of animal gastrointestinal microbiomes.
