Climate Change in Urban Areas

Dear Colleagues,

Urban areas are focal points of action on climate change; they are responsible for a large proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions, and they are also hotspots of vulnerability to a changing climate. Urban planners and decision-makers must develop policies to transition towards net-zero emissions at the same time as protecting their citizens from extreme weather events and other climate impacts.
This Special Issue will focus on studies that specifically address the interactions between urban areas and climate change. This will include urban approaches to tackling climate mitigation, through changing urban form, infrastructure, land-use and transport planning policies, technology, and behavior of citizens. We also seek submissions that consider the resilience of urban areas, with both risk assessment and adaptation planning approaches. This could include the use of green infrastructure, adaptation of buildings and infrastructure systems, and the role of nature-based solutions in urban areas.
We are particularly keen to accept papers that examine the interactions between mitigation and adaptation, analyzing urban areas as systems of interconnected components, including built, natural, and human elements.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Urban Science is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
