Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid development of artificial intelligence, computational intelligence, and advanced control methodologies has significantly expanded the capabilities of modern control systems. Within this context, symmetry and asymmetry provide important structural perspectives for modeling, analyzing, and controlling complex dynamical systems. Symmetric properties can be exploited to reduce model complexity, preserve system invariants, simplify controller design, and improve stability and robustness. Conversely, intentional or naturally occurring asymmetries may enhance adaptability and provide effective mechanisms for dealing with uncertainties, disturbances, faults, heterogeneous components, and nonlinear operating conditions.
This Special Issue, entitled “Symmetry in Intelligent Control Theory and Applications”, aims to bring together recent theoretical, methodological, and application-oriented advances at the intersection of symmetry principles and intelligent control. Particular attention will be given to approaches that integrate modern artificial intelligence techniques—including machine learning, neural networks, fuzzy systems, reinforcement learning, evolutionary computation, and hybrid intelligent methods—with conventional and advanced control strategies.
We welcome original research articles and comprehensive review papers demonstrating how symmetry or asymmetry can contribute to the analysis, design, optimization, implementation, and performance enhancement of intelligent control systems. Both theoretical contributions and experimentally validated studies are encouraged.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Symmetry and asymmetry in linear and nonlinear control systems;
- Intelligent, adaptive, robust, and optimal control;
- Neural-network- and deep-learning-based control;
- Reinforcement learning and data-driven control;
- Fuzzy and neuro-fuzzy control systems;
- Evolutionary and metaheuristic controller optimization;
- Symmetry-aware modeling and system identification;
- Fractional-order and nonlinear dynamical systems;
- Fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant intelligent control;
- State estimation, observers, and sensor fusion;
- Multi-agent, cooperative, and distributed control systems;
- Robotics, autonomous systems, and intelligent transportation;
- Industrial automation, mechatronic, and cyber–physical systems;
- Intelligent control applications in energy and smart systems;
- Embedded and real-time implementations of intelligent controllers.
Through this Special Issue, we aim to highlight how symmetry-based concepts combined with intelligent computational methods can provide new perspectives for developing reliable, adaptive, efficient, and robust control systems and promote further interaction between control theory, artificial intelligence, and real-world engineering applications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
