Dear Colleagues,

In the rapidly evolving field of computer vision, the interplay between symmetry and asymmetry plays a fundamental role in understanding and interpreting complex visual data, particularly in remote sensing and target detection. This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge research and innovative applications that leverage both symmetric and asymmetric principles to advance the state of the art.

Symmetry, as a key geometric property, facilitates robust feature extraction, pattern recognition, and 3D reconstruction from remote sensing imagery, enabling efficient analysis of urban landscapes, natural formations, and human-made structures. Conversely, the detection of asymmetries is crucial for identifying anomalies, changes, and specific targets—such as vehicles, vessels, or disturbed terrain—that often deviate from expected symmetric patterns.

This Issue welcomes contributions presenting novel algorithms, deep learning architectures, and mathematical models that exploit these complementary concepts. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, symmetric-aware deep learning for object detection, asymmetry-driven change detection, multi-modal remote sensing data fusion, and the theoretical foundations of symmetry in vision transformers. By bridging the gap between geometric principles and modern computational methods, this collection seeks to foster advancements in environmental monitoring, urban planning, defense, and disaster response.
