Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue invites contributions examining symmetric and asymmetric principles across the physical and network layers of next-generation wireless systems—from channel modeling and multiple access to reconfigurable antenna and surface technologies and learning-based network optimization. It aims to bring together theoretical, algorithmic, and system-level perspectives on how symmetry and asymmetry shape performance, reliability, and efficiency in 5G/6G, satellite, and IoT-scale networks.

Symmetry appears throughout wireless communication systems in multiple forms: symmetric versus asymmetric channel statistics, balanced versus unbalanced power and rate allocation in multiple-access schemes, geometric symmetry in satellite constellations and antenna arrays, and symmetric versus asymmetric exploration in learning-based network control. Understanding and exploiting these properties is increasingly central to the design of emerging wireless technologies, including reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, non-orthogonal and rate-splitting multiple access, pinching and fluid antenna systems, and non-terrestrial (satellite) networks.

We welcome original research articles, as well as review papers, which advance the analytical, algorithmic, or experimental understanding of symmetry and asymmetry in this space. Both purely theoretical contributions and system-/hardware-informed studies are encouraged.

Suggested (non-exhaustive) topics for submission include:

  • Fading and propagation channel modeling using special functions (Meijer-G, Fox-H) for symmetric/asymmetric fading environments
  • Outage and ergodic capacity analysis under symmetric and asymmetric fading and interference conditions
  • NOMA, RSMA, OFDMA, and SCMA: symmetric vs. asymmetric power/rate allocation and interference management
  • Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS/STAR-RIS, active/passive RIS) and pinching antenna systems (PASS)
  • Fluid antenna systems (FAS) and holographic MIMO
  • Blockage-resilient and fault-tolerant design for reconfigurable surface-aided links
  • LEO/NTN satellite communications: constellation geometry, stochastic geometry, and coordinated multiple access
  • Online learning and multi-armed bandits for dynamic spectrum access and resource management
  • 5G/6G multi-band spectrum management and spectrum-sharing architectures
  • Industrial IoT and factory-network wireless architectures
  • Signal processing and detection techniques under asymmetric noise or interference

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
