Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Intelligent transportation systems are becoming increasingly sensorized, connected, and data-driven. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, machine vision, multimodal sensing, digital twins, and intelligent decision-making, new opportunities are emerging for transportation infrastructure monitoring, equipment fault diagnosis, traffic perception, operation optimization, and safety management. The concept of symmetry is highly relevant to intelligent transportation systems, including spatial–temporal symmetry in traffic flow, structural symmetry and asymmetry in infrastructure health monitoring, data distribution shifts across operating conditions, and balanced decision-making in safety-critical transportation scenarios.

This Special Issue aims to collect recent advances in AI-enabled intelligent transportation systems, with particular attention to perception, diagnosis, prediction, control, and decision-making. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, intelligent perception for railway, road, bridge, tunnel, and urban transit systems; machine-vision-based defect detection; multimodal sensing and data fusion; fault diagnosis and remaining useful life prediction for transportation equipment; pantograph–catenary system monitoring; wheel–rail and track defect analysis; digital twins for smart transportation infrastructure; explainable and trustworthy AI; robust cross-domain diagnosis; edge intelligence; and reinforcement-learning-based control and maintenance decision-making.

Original research articles and review papers are welcome. We particularly encourage submissions supported by real-world data, field validation, open benchmarks, interpretable models, and engineering deployment evidence.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
