Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid development of intelligent systems and cybersecurity technologies is transforming modern digital environments, including the Internet of Things (IoT), smart networks, cloud and edge computing, autonomous systems, and data-driven applications. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly employed to enhance security, reliability, adaptability, and decision-making. At the same time, the growing complexity and connectivity of these systems introduce new security, privacy, trust, and resilience challenges that require innovative approaches.

Symmetry and asymmetry provide important perspectives for the design, analysis, and protection of intelligent and secure systems. These concepts arise in diverse contexts, including symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, balanced and unbalanced data distributions, symmetric and asymmetric network structures, attack–defense relationships, distributed intelligence, privacy-preserving computation, and learning across heterogeneous environments. Exploring these characteristics can contribute to more efficient, trustworthy, resilient, and secure intelligent systems.

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate recent theoretical and practical advances at the intersection of intelligent systems, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, with particular interest in approaches involving symmetry or asymmetry in their models, architectures, algorithms, data, or security mechanisms. We welcome original research articles, review papers, and innovative applications addressing emerging challenges and solutions in these areas.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning for cybersecurity;
  • Intelligent security and threat detection;
  • Intrusion and anomaly detection;
  • Symmetric and asymmetric cryptography and security mechanisms;
  • Federated and distributed learning;
  • Privacy-preserving machine learning;
  • Trustworthy, explainable, and secure AI;
  • Internet of Things (IoT) and smart systems security;
  • Network, cloud, and edge security;
  • Cyberattack detection, prediction, and defense;
  • Adversarial machine learning and AI security;
  • Secure data analytics and privacy protection;
  • Blockchain and decentralized security;
  • Authentication, access control, and identity management;
  • Intelligent systems for critical and emerging applications;
  • Symmetric and asymmetric models, architectures, algorithms, and data analysis in intelligent and secure systems.

We look forward to receiving high-quality contributions that advance the theory, methodology, and applications of intelligent systems and cybersecurity.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
