Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Symmetry is a fundamental concept that permeates computational imaging and image analysis, from the mathematical foundations of imaging systems to the structural properties of visual data. Transformative techniques such as Fourier and wavelet transforms, optimization algorithms, and deep learning architectures all rely intrinsically on symmetry principles to achieve efficiency, robustness, and interpretability. Meanwhile, the deliberate exploitation of asymmetry offers complementary advantages for computational imaging, 2D/3D image analysis, and modelling complex real-world scenes where perfect symmetry is rarely observed.
This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research that advances the theory and practice of symmetry-driven methodologies across the entire imaging and 2D/3D image analysis pipeline. We invite original research articles and comprehensive reviews on topics including, but not limited to, the following: symmetry-aware image reconstruction and inverse problem solving; invariant feature extraction and pattern recognition; symmetry-constrained deep learning architectures for image classification, segmentation, and generation; applications of group theory and representation learning in imaging; symmetry-based regularization for ill-posed problems; and the role of symmetry in biomedical image analysis, 3D reconstruction, 3D motion capture, and VR/AR. Contributions that bridge theoretical developments with practical applications in medical diagnostics, autonomous systems, remote sensing, industrial inspection, smart education systems are particularly welcome.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
