Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Symmetry and asymmetry are fundamental characteristics of biological systems that strongly influence biomechanical function and performance. In living systems, perfect symmetry is rare; instead, functional asymmetries often emerge as adaptations to environmental, developmental, and pathological factors. While structural symmetry is often associated with optimal efficiency and stability, functional asymmetries are common in both healthy and pathological conditions. Understanding these patterns is essential for advancing knowledge in human movement science, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and bio-inspired engineering.
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue, which aims to advance the current knowledge on symmetry and asymmetry in biomechanical systems. The aim of this Special Issue is to provide a focused platform for interdisciplinary studies examining how symmetry-related principles influence biomechanical performance, structure, and function.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, the following: biomechanical analysis of gait and movement asymmetries; symmetry in musculoskeletal modelling; asymmetry in injury mechanisms and rehabilitation; computational and experimental methods for symmetry assessment; bio-inspired design; and symmetry-breaking processes in biological tissues.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
