Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce a new Special Issue of Symmetry, “Symmetry for Advanced Sensing: Novel Materials, Structures, Systems and Signal Processing”.
Sensing technologies are advancing rapidly across diverse fields, including biomedical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, food safety, industrial automation, wearable electronics, and intelligent systems. These advances are increasingly driven by innovations in functional materials, engineered structures, integrated systems, and intelligent signal processing. Symmetry principles—whether in spatial arrangements, structural design, system architectures, or data patterns—offer a powerful and unifying framework for understanding and enhancing sensor performance. Conversely, deliberate symmetry breaking can give rise to novel sensing mechanisms and improved selectivity, sensitivity, and robustness.
This Special Issue aims to explore how symmetry and asymmetry principles can be exploited across the full spectrum of sensing research. We welcome contributions that explicitly address symmetry-related concepts in materials, structures, systems, or signal processing, and that demonstrate their impact on sensing performance or novel functionalities. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Symmetry-guided design of novel sensing materials, such as metamaterials, plasmonic nanostructures, photonic/phononic crystals, 2D materials, and chiral structures;
- Structural symmetry/asymmetry in sensor architectures, transducers, resonators, and micro/nano-electromechanical systems;
- Symmetry principles in sensor arrays, networks, and multi-sensor fusion systems;
- Symmetry-based signal processing, pattern recognition, and machine learning for sensing data;
- Symmetry-enabled sensing mechanisms in optical, electrical, electrochemical, mechanical, acoustic, thermal, and magnetic sensors;
- Applications in biomedical, environmental, food, industrial, wearable, and autonomous sensing, among other sensing modalities.
By bringing together multidisciplinary research across communities, this Special Issue seeks to highlight how symmetry concepts can drive the next generation of sensing, from fundamental mechanisms to emerging applications. Original research articles and comprehensive reviews are welcome.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
