Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainable energy is at the heart of economic growth and the climate change agenda. In fact, the need to mitigate climate changes has led policymakers to discourage the use of traditional fossil energy sources and to encourage an efficient use of the existing ones in almost all countries in the world in the most recent decades.

Sustainable energy policies are a driver for renewable energy innovations and environmentally friendly technology developments, which in turn are determinants for the adoption of energy efficiency measures and the diffusion of renewable energies. In addition, sustainable energy policies may lead to structural changes of the economic and technology systems towards the effort of reaching the sustainability objectives, which are crucial for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the main responsible of the negative externalities due to climate change. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic opens new scenarios in energy economics for the successful low-carbon transformation of the economy.

The aim of this Special Issue is to investigate the challenges for applying a greener energy system. In this framework, attention will be paid to the effects of different energy policies in terms of environmental and economic sustainability, with a particular attention for research on the interplay of sustainable energy policy, environmental technology innovation and sustainability that sheds light on the sustainable energy policy, environmental technology technological innovation and sustainability systems, while analyzing the consequences and mechanisms that drive their interplay and the trade-offs between them. More precisely, given that stricter environmental and energy regulations have been traditionally seen as constraints in terms of firm profits, this Special Issue investigates if they are instead an opportunity for firms to identify inefficient uses of costly resources, to introduce profit-increasing environmental-friendly innovations, and thus to improve their environmental performance and competitiveness worldwide.
