Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue “Climate Change, Natural Hazards and Environmental Education” aims to advance interdisciplinary research that examines how educational systems can respond to the accelerating socio‑environmental challenges of the 21st century. We welcome contributions that explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning about climate change, extreme weather events, water scarcity, biodiversity loss and other natural hazards that increasingly affect communities worldwide.
This Special Issue seeks studies that analyze teachers’ and students’ conceptions of risk, the development of geospatial and climate‑related competencies and the role of schools in fostering sustainability‑oriented citizenship. We particularly encourage research addressing curriculum integration, experiential and place‑based learning, metacognition and the use of emerging technologies—including AI and geospatial tools—to enhance environmental literacy and risk awareness.
Both empirical and theoretical manuscripts are invited, including case studies, comparative analyses, conceptual frameworks and didactic proposals that strengthen the connection between education, resilience and sustainability.
This Special Issue answers the following research questions with theoretical and empirical studies:
- How do educational systems foster climate literacy and strengthen students’ and teachers’ understanding of climate change, natural hazards and socio‑environmental risks?
- Which pedagogical approaches and competencies most effectively promote environmental awareness, risk perception and sustainability‑oriented decision‑making in formal and non‑formal education?
- How can emerging technologies—including geospatial tools, digital mapping and AI‑assisted learning—enhance environmental education, resilience building and community engagement in the face of climate change?

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
