Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue titled “Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Education: Intelligent Support for Learning, Assessment, Inclusion, and Well-Being” aims to explore how artificial intelligence can be harnessed to advance sustainable education through intelligent, equitable, and human-centered support for teaching and learning. This Issue seeks to provide a rigorous scholarly forum for research on AI-driven approaches that enhance learning effectiveness, improve assessment quality, foster inclusion, and support student well-being across diverse educational contexts. It welcomes studies addressing intelligent learning support, adaptive and personalized education, AI-enabled assessment and feedback, learning analytics for diagnosis and intervention, and data-informed educational decision-making for more resilient and sustainable educational systems.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of AI in advancing inclusive and sustainable educational practices. Relevant topics include intelligent systems that support diverse learners, promote equitable access to educational opportunities, strengthen formative assessment and learning diagnosis, and improve the quality, efficiency, and long-term sustainability of educational services while reducing unnecessary burdens on learners, teachers, and institutions. The Issue also encourages submissions that examine how AI can contribute to student well-being, engagement, and holistic development, especially in technology-enhanced and data-rich learning environments.

This Special Issue contributes to the growing discourse on sustainable and responsible educational innovation by connecting AI technologies with long-term educational quality, equity, resilience, and human development. In addition to technical and empirical studies, contributions addressing transparency, fairness, interpretability, privacy, accountability, and ethical governance in educational AI are strongly encouraged. By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives, this Issue aims to generate actionable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to design AI-enabled educational systems that are effective, inclusive, trustworthy, and sustainable.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
