Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Accelerating the transition to a circular economy demands more than policy commitment: it requires rigorous evidence-based science that connects systemic innovation to measurable sustainability outcomes. Fragmented governance frameworks, insufficient empirical evidence on systemic transitions, and the limited integration of environmental management systems into circular business models continue to constrain progress toward meaningful sustainability performance. This Special Issue, Circular economy, environmental management and sustainability, will address these gaps by providing a rigorous scientific platform for interdisciplinary research that bridges theoretical frameworks with applied, evidence-based practice. Original research is encouraged across circular business model innovation, industrial symbiosis, life cycle assessment, digital transformation enablers, governance instruments, and regulatory implementation. We welcome empirical studies that demonstrate quantifiable environmental, economic, and social benefits, as well as comparative analyses across sectors, geographies, and institutional contexts. We encourage the submission of research that connects circular strategies to biodiversity outcomes, ESG frameworks and climate neutrality pathways. By consolidating diverse methodological approaches ranging from quantitative modelling to qualitative case studies, this Special Issue will generate actionable knowledge for researchers, policymakers, and industry practitioners navigating the evolving sustainability transition. Submissions are expected to advance theoretical understanding while contributing directly to scalable, real-world circular economy implementation aligned with global sustainability frameworks.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
