Dear Colleagues,
Microplastics present in marine environments have become a major global environmental concern due to their occurrence through the improper disposal of plastic products into the environment, causing potential impacts on marine ecosystems. This Special Issue aims to bring together original research articles and high-quality review articles that deepen understanding of the sources, distribution, fate, and ecological effects of microplastics in marine environments.
The Special Issue will address topics such as microplastic generation and transport pathways, advances in sampling and analysis methods, and interactions with marine organisms, trophic transfer, bioaccumulation, and ecological effects at individual, population, and ecosystem levels. Contributions addressing chemical and biological interactions, including the roles of microplastics from interdisciplinary perspectives combining field observations, laboratory experiments, modeling, and ecological risk assessment are all welcome. Research that contributes to mitigation strategies, monitoring frameworks, and science-based policy recommendations that support sustainable marine management is also encouraged.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
