Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations a few years ago, addresses the most pressing challenges of our time, generated by enormous disparities of opportunity, wealth and power, such as climate change, social injustice, human rights and economic growth. At its heart, are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries—developed and developing—in a global partnership. They recognize equitable sustainable development as all that ends poverty and other deprivations, which must go hand in hand with strategies for sustainable development that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth—all while tackling climate change and working to preserve the natural habitat. Since MSMEs are the foundation of our economies and society, they are at the critical leading edge of the U.N.’s sustainable development initiative.

Sustainable entrepreneurs are our best hope to achieve the SDGs, working within a network of like-minded visionaries and innovators. This Special Issue of the Sustainability journal aims to document cases of sustainable entrepreneurship across the world and to accelerate knowledge about what works and could be amplified.

This Special Issue on “Challenges for Sustainable Entrepreneurship in the Context of U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” will fill an important gap in the literature by exploring the relationships between sustainable entrepreneurship and 17 SDGs. In this sense, we encourage original submissions, including review articles as well as theoretical and empirical contributions related to the following themes:

  • Entrepreneurship and reduction in poverty—ending poverty everywhere in all its forms;
  • Entrepreneurship and sustainable agriculture;
  • Entrepreneurship and promotion of well-being;
  • Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial education;
  • Entrepreneurship and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all;
  • Entrepreneurship and affordable/clean energy;
  • Entrepreneurship and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all;
  • Entrepreneurship and promotion of sustainable industrialization and innovation;
  • Entrepreneurship and sustainable cities and communities;
  • Entrepreneurship and responsible consumption and production;
  • Entrepreneurship and action to combat climate change and its impacts;
  • Entrepreneurship and the sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development;
  • Entrepreneurship and promotion of sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems;
  • Entrepreneurship and inclusive societies for sustainable development.

The scope of this research was to identify the degree of satisfaction experienced by beneficiaries as a result of accessing and implementing a project using European funds in tourism. The whole research identified more than 1000 projects that were financed from European funds in tourism in the period 2007–2013 through the operational programs. The survey was conducted on a sample of 312 respondents, and the method used was a quantitative, research-based survey. This research aims to collect the necessary data for understanding how the process of accessing European funds in tourism is perceived. A few important objectives, such as the effect of the benefits perceived by beneficiaries as a result of accessing projects using European funds in tourism on the degree of satisfaction experienced by them as a result of their development and the effect of risks perceived by beneficiaries as a result of accessing European funded projects in tourism on the degree of satisfaction experienced by them as a result of their development, were highlighted in this research. The most important objective proposed in this research is strategic planning, which is the main way in which the beneficiaries can be fulfilled in regards to the process of accessing European Funds.
