Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The urgent need to decarbonize transport and create more liveable urban spaces has propelled electric bicycles (E-bikes) to the forefront of sustainable mobility discussions. As a form of urban micromobility, E-bikes offer a unique solution that combines the health and flexibility of traditional cycling with powered assistance, overcoming barriers like distance and topography. This has led to a surge in their adoption and the proliferation of E-bike sharing systems globally. Understanding their impact on individual travel behaviour, their potential to complement existing public transport networks (multimodal integration) and their role as a solution for first- and last-mile mobility is critical. This research area is vital for developing effective, equitable and sustainable urban transportation policies.

This Special Issue aims to consolidate and advance state-of-the-art research on E-bikes within the broader context of sustainable urban transportation. We invite contributions that critically examine the planning, implementation and impacts of E-bike systems. The subject aligns perfectly with the journal's scope by addressing key challenges in sustainability, such as mode shift, energy efficiency and urban liveability. We seek to move beyond descriptive studies, towards data-driven insights that can inform the next generation of mobility systems and planning.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • The role of E-bikes in achieving sustainable urban mobility goals.
  • Adoption, usage patterns and user experience in E-bike sharing systems.
  • Integration of E-bikes with public transport and other shared mobility services.
  • Analysis of travel behaviour changes and mode substitution effects.
  • Data-driven approaches to E-bike infrastructure planning and policy-making.
  • E-bikes as a solution for first- and last-mile connectivity.
  • Comparative studies of E-bike systems versus other micromobility options.
  • The impact of E-bikes on traffic congestion, safety and the urban environment.
  • Business models, governance and equity considerations in E-bike sharing.
  • Future scenarios for the "E-Bike City" and its integration into urban mobility systems.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
