Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

(1) Focus, Scope, and Purpose:

This Special Issue focuses on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to assist sustainable development and enhance risk management. It will explore how AI technologies such as machine learning, predictive analytics, and intelligent decision systems are better able to address global sustainability challenges and aid in anticipating, assessing, and mitigating risks across industries.

Interdisciplinary research is the journal's scope, and it invites submissions from environmental studies, engineering, economics, public policy, and computer science. Theoretical studies, applied studies, case studies, and reviews are invited submissions bridging AI innovation with success in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and increased resilience in systems threatened by environmental, economic, or societal causes.

This Special Issue will promote interdisciplinary discourse and provide a platform for research aimed at aligning AI development with ethical, sustainable, and resilient goals.

(2) Contribution to Existing Literature:

This Special Issue will add to the current body of literature through bringing together the fields of AI, sustainability, and risk management—fields that have long been studied in isolation. It offers fresh insights into the ethical application of AI and how to apply it to address real-world sustainability issues, bridge significant knowledge and practice gaps, and motivate theoretical inquiry and real-world application. It will facilitate the development of a more inclusive, impact-centered research agenda on AI.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
