Dear Colleagues,
Climate has been one of the principal factors shaping the Earth system’s evolution throughout geological history, influencing landscapes, ecosystems, biodiversity, natural resources, and, ultimately, human societies. Understanding the mechanisms and consequences of both natural climate variability and present-day climate change is therefore fundamental for developing sustainable strategies that address contemporary environmental challenges. The geological record provides the long-term perspective needed to place current observations within the broader context of Earth’s history, revealing the rates, magnitudes, and consequences of past environmental changes that cannot be captured by instrumental records alone.
Evidence of past climate and environmental change is preserved in diverse natural and cultural archives, including geological formations, sedimentary records, fossils, landforms, archaeological sites, historical buildings, natural stone, and geoheritage. Together with studies of contemporary environmental processes, these archives provide an integrated framework for understanding climate–environment interactions and their ecological and societal consequences.
This Special Issue invites multidisciplinary contributions addressing palaeoclimate variability, climate and environmental change, and their relevance to sustainability across the Earth sciences. Original research articles, reviews, and case studies are welcome, particularly those demonstrating the ways in which knowledge derived from geological and related archives can support climate adaptation, ecosystem resilience, environmental and heritage conservation, sustainable resource management, geoeducation, geotourism, and evidence-based decision-making.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
