Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue addresses the reliable and sustainable integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems within energy communities, collective prosumers, and microgrids. As the rapid expansion of renewable energy drives an unprecedented increase in distributed PV capacity, power grids increasingly face the challenges of overgeneration and energy curtailment. Mitigating these issues is critical to ensuring both the optimal performance of generation assets and the stability of the distribution network. Consequently, the technical scope encompasses grid support functions via advanced inverters, optimal coordination of PV storage–demand response, generation forecasting, energy management, interoperability, protection schemes, and data quality in monitoring practices.
Beyond technical integration, this Special Issue contributes to holistic sustainability by defining and quantifying harmonized indicators. These parameters evaluate environmental impacts, techno-economic performance, community value creation, and the regulatory frameworks (tariffs, incentives, and governance) required to enable equitable participation. By bridging these multidisciplinary lines, this Special Issue promotes replicable methodologies, comparable metrics, and multi-region evidence to accelerate the local energy transition.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
