Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The exceptional performance of composite materials makes them indispensable in modern engineering due to their low weight, high strength, and long service life. Current research is increasingly focused on developing multifunctional and sustainable composites with advanced functionalities, including self-sensing, self-healing, thermal insulation, electromagnetic shielding, and enhanced fire resistance.
Sustainability has become a key driver in composite material development and encourages the use of geopolymers, alkali-activated materials (AAMs), recycled and bio-based raw materials, industrial by-products, and natural fibers to reduce carbon emissions, energy consumption, and resource use while improving durability and recyclability.
This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in the design, synthesis, characterization, processing, and application of sustainable composite materials. Particular emphasis will be placed on innovative materials and technologies that combine high technical performance with reduced environmental impact through circular economy principles and sustainability assessment methods, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
The Special Issue will complement the existing literature by integrating advances in composite materials with sustainability assessment and industrial applications, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and identifying future research directions. As a Special Issue published by Sustainability, it supports research that advances sustainable development through scientific and interdisciplinary approaches.
We welcome original research articles, review papers, and short communications addressing innovative sustainable composite materials and technologies that contribute to climate neutrality, resource efficiency, and solutions to current environmental and technological challenges.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
